Podcast #63 The Paleolithic Ghost of the New Year! AND- Tumac (Mighty Slayer) meets Raquel Welch!!

“This will be MY year!”  Matt thought.
“The year I go back to the Paleolithic- the year I get fit and healthy!!”

Of course, he had said that many times in the past... but this time, this time he KNEW he would make it- he had ordered his Vitamix blender, he had cleaned out his kitchen of ALL junk, processed, and neolithic, man-made foods-

He was going back to... GOD MADE foods;
AND HE WAS BRINGING HIS WHOLE FAMILY WITH HIM!!

His wife had begun taking multiple prescriptions, for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and now depression- all this despite the fact that she ate like a bird most of the time, watched her fat intake like a hawk, and exercised for at least a couple of hours, mostly daily, except when she was injured, which seemed to be more and more often lately- and Samantha was only 35!

Mikey, their son was only 10 years old, and lean as a bean pole.  Sam thought this was great- the only thing that seemed to matter to her was “leanness”.  But Matt noticed the huge mood swings in his son, and how he had trouble concentrating at school.  And their daughter, Taylor, was 14, and had just entered high school this past Fall.  She had always seemed so healthy and happy, but since starting school, she had been dieting like crazy, and he had begun to fear for her health as well.

There had been arguing, and some tears from both the children AND his wife when he had announced his plan.  Matt had pointed out that, since he had been pronounced both pre-diabetic AND hypertensive, as had his wife Sam, that they had no choice but to try this Paleo thing- it was either that, or slowly get sicker and sicker and fatter and fatter...

Matt had always been an athletic kid, and even played lots of sports right up through college.  After that, getting a job and married, he was sporadic with the physical training and playing, and started eating more and more at restaurants, and ordering pizza for him and Sam.  (Sam usually gave him her cheesy topping, and only ate the crust, which was low fat)!  But they both put on maybe 10 or 15 pounds of fat over the next 10 years.

After first Taylor, and then Matt were born, it seemed they were always so busy and frazzled that there was never the time or the desire to exercise, or even to go for a walk.  Matt started dropping off the kids and their mom at the store, so they wouldn’t have to walk... he often thought of the irony later, Sam drove off to the health club to workout on her cardio machines.

This had all changed the day he had been visited by the ghostly visitor-

THE GHOST OF NEW YEAR’S PAST!

It had been a couple of days after Christmas, and the kids were both in bed, sated with the many electric gadgets they had received for presents.  Sam was upstairs, taking a bath before bed.  Matt had walked in the living room to look once more at the beautiful Christmas tree, and smell its balsam fragrance once more, when-

A strange, bronzed figure leaped through the window!

He looked down at Matt with blazing, blue eyes, this spectral figure that was almost a giant in stature, and said “You will follow me to the past”!  Upon which he grasped the startled man’s wrist in an iron-like clasp, and pulled...

Matt felt a huge WRENCH on his arm, and then he was surrounded by waves of changing lights, and buffets of strong winds as he and his unearthly captor were flown through yawning chasms of space and time.  When it finally stopped, he looked about him dazedly at a fire, some group of men, women and children sitting and standing about it, with a group of dogs roaming in the background- then he passed out!

I AM YOUR ANCESTOR

When he awoke, he was lying on a fur, and had more atop him to keep him warm; it was a chill morning.  He sat up, and all about him were people- tawny haired, blue eyed, very well developed and clean limbed folk.  They looked at him with interest- one ran off with alacrity.

This one returned quickly with the Ghostly abductor from the night before- looking not at all ghostly in the morning light, and seemingly bursting with strength, health and vitality!

“I am here to save you” said the tall, broad shouldered man, “and your family, my descendants, at the same time!  The Great Spirit has granted me this, to travel to the future to help my progeny!”

And he gestured with both arms wide, as if invoking the Great One then and there, and suddenly crouching down like a great cat at Matt’s side, pulled him to his feet.

“I have much to show you, my son of many of my sons!”  We have not much time, so make haste.”

YOUR FUTURE IS IN YOUR PAST

Much was revealed to Matt in the next span of time, which seemed long, but which could have been hours, or even days, but Matt had no way of knowing.  He learned from his long ago Tribe- he hunted with them, with spear and flint-tipped knife.  He learned the relish of bringing down a mammoth with the other men; the heady rush of exaltation after a few days of scanty food, the gusty feasting after the carrying home of the meat, the dancing, music and celebrations- all was elemental in its simplicity, and yet the more satisfying and real for all that.

The tribe itself was all like one big family- about 50 men, women and children, assorted dogs- all were equal and important, all had a say in what was done.  Matt’s ancestor, whose name meant Mighty Slayer, but sounded nothing like that in speech, sounding more like TUMAC, simple and short as were all of their names.  He learned them all there, befriended them, but then he... forgot when he returned.

Matt had learned the importance; nay, the absolute criticality of eating real, God made animals that eat what God intended from nature.  He reveled in the true, uncivilized hearty friendships with his fellow tribesmen, since they were real, no false flattery uttered for gain, since all was shared equally anyway!  He felt his health return, and then surpass anything that it had been, even in his youth!  He was a tanned, lithe pantherish figure that last day, having just killed his first boar, and been acclaimed about the council fires.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

It was there, about the fire, that the leader of the tribe, his ancestor, came again to him before the tribe and the fire.

“It is time to return” he said.  “You must...remember!”

With that, he again grasped Matt’s wrist, and held it in an iron grip.

A surge of changing lights, the buffet of strong winds, and then... blackness.


Matt awoke in bed, his wife beside him.  He felt utterly- different!  He looked down at his hand, and easily leapt from the bed.  What had happened?  Had it all been a dream?  If so...

Matt looked at himself in the mirror, and grasped the sink for support.  The man looking back at him from the glass was him alright- but an impossibly lean, tanned and fit looking version!  He knew that man he saw had NO health issues, and he felt as if he could move huge boulders single-handed.

And he knew, as he would always know from then on, that this was the year that
HE AND HIS TRIBE WOULD BE PALEO
FOREVER!!

On that thought, he went downstairs to clean out the kitchen, and load up the Vitamix!

How to green the world's deserts and save the planet, by eating more meat!


I wanted to share this powerful TED talk by Allan Savory, about how to restore the deserts of the world, which are growing, by reintroducing herds of animals to the landscape!  According to common perceptions for a long time, herbivores were thought to destroy the landscape: here, Allan Savory explains how they are actually needed to revitalize and restore to green fruitfulness the deserts of the world.

Think about the American dust bowl of the 1930's, that literally blew away the topsoil of the American Western great plains- this was the land that had hosted an estimated 30 - 60 MILLION buffalo, all roaming about in vast herds, keeping the land green and viable for other creatures that lived upon it, like coyotes, wolves, big cats, and humans.  When the buffalo were hunted almost to extinction, and men planted wheat over their old grassland habitat...

Eventually, the topsoil all just blew away in huge, black clouds of dust!

We need herbivorous animals, in large numbers, to keep our habitat healthy!!

PaleoJay's Smoothie Cafe podcast #62 - Add some Resistant Starch to your Paleo Smoothie, and It’s almost Christmas- Make Yourself a Paleo Tom and Jerry hot drink!


Welcome to PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe, by your own... Paleo Santa!

OK, finally my weekly podcast has surpassed my own rather lofty age- we are now on PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe #62- and your own PJ is only 61 & 1/2!  This podcast is keeping my young... well, I guess it helps to connect with you weekly, but it is really ny ancestral diet and exercise regimen that keeps me... well, REALLY healthy!

I am at an age when most of my peers are really slowing down.  Many have nagging disorders and diseases; heck, many of their children have disorders and diseases that are completely preventable, and even REVERSIBLE (Like type 2 Diabetes!), but either through ignorance or unwillingness to change continue on their unhealthy, downward course.  Don’t you be one of them!

Make yourself a daily Paleo smoothie, son!  Fire up your Vitamix, add in your green or white tea, coconut milk, iodine drops, Vitamin D drops, kelp powder, spirulina, ginger, turmeric, kefir, raw pastured eggs, pastured butter like Kerrygold or Organic Valley, avocado,fresh and/or frozen berries and veggies... and you are golden, my friend!

THERE IS NOTHING ANY HEALTHIER FOR YOU THAN THIS NECTAR!

I am always looking to improve on the best thing going, in this case nutritionally.  Recently, I began adding an avocado to most of my smoothies, since it is such a great source of good, satiating fat... then, I started adding a tsp. or so of Great Lakes brand gelatin, since it is such a good source of collagen- the same thing in bone broth, but sometimes you just don’t HAVE bone broth readily available, especially in Summer.

And now I beginning to add in a Tablespoon or so of Potato Starch, since it is a resistant starch, or RS.  Chris Kresser originally brought this to my attention, mentioning the work of Richard Nikoley of Free the Animal blog.

Anyhow; to sum up:  Resistant Starch, the best, most convenient, and a really inexpensive source of which is Bob’s Potato Starch, readily available in many stores nationwide, and also online.  Get a bag, and start adding some to your smoothies!  Start with 1 Tablespoon; work up to four per smoothie...the thing is, although it is a starch, it does NOT raise your blood glucose level!  What it DOES do is FEED all the microorganisms in your gut- it is a wonderful prebiotic, or a “fertilizer” of sorts for your gut microbes, which we are discovering more and more a crucial for both physical and mental health!  And so, HAVE SOME RS, FOR CHRISTMAS!!

Also, I want to give YOU a present or two- a couple of recent recipes that are perfect for the holidays:

Paleo Tom and Jerry mix for a wonderful, hot, healthy, yuletide adult beverage!  AND,

A recipe for a very paleoesque Hollandaise sauce!!

First, Tom and Jerry, a traditional Wisconsin tipple-

Use one egg per serving, so you can adjust accordingly. Separate the eggs. Beat egg whites until firm peaks begin to form. Beat the yolks until they are very thin. Fold whites into the yolks. Add one teaspoon to one tablespoon of sugar (according to taste and consistency) for each egg. Add a touch of cinnamon, allspice, and ground cloves. This is now your batter.

Preheat your mugs with hot water. Put one tablespoon of the batter, 1 oz. Brandy, 1 oz. Rum into the mug. Fill to top with very hot milk or boiling water, stirring gently. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

After trying this recipe, which was great as it is, I tried more of the egg batter this morning in my coffee... I always dissolve about a T of coconut oil in my coffee, and today I topped it with the batter and some spices- very, very good!  Later today, I will try it again as a Tom and Jerry, along with the brandy, hot water, the mix; and importantly, a type of dark rum called Black Label rum from Bermuda- really a great, full-flavored rum, AND whipped cream!!  Always improving things, that’s what we do here at the North Pole Cafe...


Next, for Christmas Morning, a Hollandaise sauce recipe!  If you are not aware, hollandaise sauce is a wonderful Paleo type of sauce, consisting of egg yolks, lemon juice, sea salt, and pastured butter, all made in your Vitamix blender!  This sauce makes anything taste absolutely wonderful; I have already introduced it as the perfect way to camouflage  the taste of liver!!     Here is the recipe:

Easy Blender Hollandaise Sauce Recipe
Yield: Makes about 1 cup of sauce, good for about 4-6 servings.
Add to shopping list
INGREDIENTS
3 egg yolks (see how to separate eggs)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon cayenne (optional)
10 tablespoons unsalted butter (if using salted butter, skip the added salt)
METHOD
1 Melt the butter slowly in a small pot. Try not to let it boil – you want the moisture in the butter to remain there and not steam away.
2 Add the egg yolks, lemon juice, salt and cayenne (if using) into your blender. Blend the egg yolk mixture at a medium to medium high speed until it lightens in color, about 20-30 seconds. The friction generated by the blender blades will heat the yolks a bit. The blending action will also introduce a little air into them, making your hollandaise a bit lighter.
3 Once the yolks have lightened in color, turn the blender down to its lowest setting (if you only have one speed on your blender it will still work), and drizzle in the melted butter slowly, while the blender is going. Continue to buzz for another couple seconds after the butter is all incorporated.
4 Turn off the blender and taste the sauce. It should be buttery, lemony and just lightly salty. If it is not salty or lemony enough, you can add a little lemon juice or salt to taste. If you want a thinner consistency, add a little warm water. Pulse briefly to incorporate the ingredients one more time.
Store until needed in a warm spot, like on or next to the stovetop. Use within an hour or so.

It really is YOUR CHOICE!!

I know, you have probably never heard of sugar encouraging cancer, but this is real, up-to-date science now, nut just conjecture.  Here is a link to a brief explanation of how it works, in case you are scientifically driven-

This breakthrough was released just this past September, so if you go onto many web sites and old research they insist there is not a real connection... they are just out of date!  There IS a connection between sugar and cancer, and to deprive your body of sugars is one surefire way to hamper the growth of cancer cells.Cutting edge cancer treatment and research now uses this as part of cancer therapy- to starve the cancer.

How can this help healthy little old you or me?

Well, I always think that, if you don’t want to get a disease, say Cancer, heart disease, or diabetes, eat as if you have it already- low sugar, high real, good fats, and plenty of God made foods.  Don’t eat man made, processed crap food, and then you will never get those diseases!  Even if you have a genetic predisposition to one or another disease or condition, it’s like having a gun pointed at your head...

BUT IF YOU NEVER LOAD IT, OR PULL THE TRIGGER, YOU ARE STILL SAFE!!

And remember: bread, pasta, all kinds of cereal and more immediately turns to sugar, RIGHT IN YOUR MOUTH!!  So they count as sugar too... get your carbs from the veggies and fruits you eat, and that you put in your daily green Paleo Smoothie.  Perhaps a sweet potato, some white rice in small amounts... that’s all you need!
Did you know that your body can make carbs out of protein?  It can, and will if it really needs more.  So don’t worry about not eating enough carbs- there is no requirement in your daily diet for any carbs at all!  They are optional.

And, the best way to maintain a good, God made foods diet is to avoid grazing.  This is the way most people eat nowadays: not just 3 meals, but LOTS of little meals and snacks, all day long.  It’s so much healthier, and more satisfying to eat a really BIG meal, with plenty of good FATS in it, like, say: pastured bacon and a 4 egg omelette, along with coffee with coconut oil melted in it, and topped with real whipped cream!  That way, you will be replete with nutrition, and able to go about your day without even thinking about food, much less craving it, for HOURS on end!  Usually, on most days, I have a big glass of Paleo Smoothie along WITH my breakfast, and then a big, late lunch around 1:30 or so, and sip another glass of smoothie around 2:30 or so... and that’s it!  I don’t usually eat until the next morning, and this is my daily IF, or intermittent fast, which leaves me feeling energized and ready for my next mornings perfectly Paleo workout, before breakfast!  There are pronounced benefits to training in a fasted state, like accelerated fat burning, and it leaves you with a real appetite after you have showered and dressed.


The other point I want to make is this: if you think that

“Oh, this Paleo thing is strange- I just want to eat what I always have; I’m sure it’s fine to eat butter and margarine, but I don’t think toast and pancakes are any problem either”.

Really, lots of folks think like this!

I’ll tell you what, though- this type of thinking and rationalization puts you in the worst of all possible worlds, health wise.

If you’re going to eat bad, fake fats (like margarine); insist on keeping grains in your diet (but also love a big steak), and eat sugar whenever you want to...

Well, you’d better just plan on going to the Doctor on a regular basis, expect major (and minor) diseases on a regular basis as you get older, and have a really good medical insurance plan (which will become increasingly problematic as Obamacare continues to kick in)!  Because, my friend, you are going to be needing all those prescription drugs: the insulin, the statins, the hypertensive medications, the extensive dental procedures, and the list goes on and on...

If you don’t Go Paleo, you WILL break, in many ways, and just kind of rust away from the inside out.  Unless, of course, you die quickly from one of your many diseases.

Our modern, S.A.D. Standard American Diet is the perfect storm that destroys our health.  Add to that high stress, poor sleep, and the lack of or else the overdoing of bad, destructive exercise like endless cardio and/or heavy weight lifting...

You are self-destructing yourself!  I don’t mean to be negative, but sometimes we need to hear the truth told, as a plain dose of reality.  It’s all too easy to rationalize, and to procrastinate, and argue against doing something you really don’t feel like doing.

Change is hard, but once begun is half done!  So begin!  One meal, and one habit at a time- it’s incremental, and it gets easier and easier as you go!

This seems to be such a blatantly obvious statement, but just think about it-

USUALLY it is ignored!

Most of the population of the Western world at least, and increasingly the whole world, subsists more and more on.... fake, processed, and fast foods!  Large quantities of refined grains and sugars; both made from genetically modified - MAN MADE- sources- GMO wheat and GMO sugar beets, primarily.  Throw in a lot of high fructose corn syrup and processed industrial seed oils, both of which are also MAN MADE, sprinkle on some chemical sweeteners and flavorings and colorings for good measure...

And you have a man made nightmare of NON-NUTRITION!!

It is really, really, really necessary, not just optional, to get back to eating real, GOD MADE foods if we want to regain or enhance our health, and that of our families.

The only viable way to do this, really, is to start cooking and eating at HOME, most of the time, for most people!  If you have an unlimited budget, and LOTS of free time, AND you live in an area where the Paleo diet has caught on in a big way, and meals are offered in restaurants that are made of real, Paleo, God made foods, well then this is an option for you- congratulations!  You have just freed up more time and energy for optimizing your God made exercise, and getting more sleep and meditation built into your life.  But for most us- we don’t live where nearly ANYONE even has heard of the Paleo diet, much less supports it!  And, most of us do NOT have an unlimited budget, and unlimited time!  Surprise surprise surprise!!

So, we eat and cook at home- and, if you are like me, that is what you prefer, anyway!  I love to grill at home; that’s what I plan to do after I work out this frigid Sunday afternoon- grass fed steak and sweet potato fries in coconut and olive oil on the grill!  Wowzer!!

The crock pot is great as well- I just made a BIG pot of turkey soup last week, with the broth from my last grilled chicken carcass as the stock, and plenty of veggies, garlic, and turkey meat.  Cook in quantity, and you are set for the week- you can easily freeze smaller portions- heck, around here we can just set the containers outside on the porch and store them frozen there!  

Make a plate of eggs in the AM, and get some pastured bacon for your frying pan, and cook the eggs in the good fat from that!  Or, get a soft boiled egg maker- I have one, it was about $20 years ago- a little electric machine that makes 6 perfect hard or soft boiled eggs at a time, in just a few minutes- I really have become addicted to soft boiled eggs!  I also recommend a Rosle soft boiled egg cutter to easily remove the top of the egg mess free, and some little egg cups and tiny spoons... sounds elaborate, but for a very small investment, you can begin incorporating some top-notch God made nutrition into your family’s life- it’s like a little, fun ritual, opening those little gold-centered nuggets of nutrition and scooping them out!

A big salad with pastured meat or fish at lunch, and grilled meat at supper with veggies slathered in grass fed butter- it really is that easy!  Have some wine with that!!

Of course, you know that I also use as a foundation of God made food my Paleo Smoothie, detailed here at length on my site at www.paleojay.com, and in my eBooks.
All you need is a Vitamix blender, and you can be like me, and whip up the healthiest beverage on the planet each and every day!  Although now I find, since I have added in the avocado, I can usually only get through a canister of my smoothie every two, or even three days- it is that filling and nutritious.

So, let’s say you have the nutrition all figured out, and God is providing... you are MORE than half way to ideal health!  NOW, you just need to add in 

GOD MADE EXERCISE!

Here is where I really veer off from the standard Paleolithic crowd!  The standard recommendations would be to join a good Crossfit gym, do power lifting, like squats, bench presses and deadlifts, and also incorporated Olympic lifts into your routine!

My gosh, if you are new to this, I’ll bet you want to quit right now... but don’t- not only are all of these heavy weight moves NOT necessary, they are actually counterproductive, long term!  The heavy weights will compress your spine, particularly in the squat and deadlift, and the bench press will destroy your shoulders and elbows, long term.  And, you can accomplish all you need to, and would want to, without any danger of injury, using your OWN BODY AS GOD INTENDED!  

Have you ever seen a cat use weights to build its incredibly lithe, sculpted, and functional physique?  Or any animal?  NO, they know how to maintain their perfect health and musculature- the do the animal equivalent of Perfectly Paleo Exercise!

They use their own body to supply the resistance needed to perfectly develop and sculpt the muscle- this is really all that you need.  And, it will develop your body in an aesthetically pleasing way, since although muscle size and shape will be the result, just as in heavy weight training- it will come without unnecessary BULK, and injury.

And for Heaven’t sake, don’t get me started on long distance running and injury and muscle loss- it’s even worse...

For women, in particular, this Perfectly Paleo form of exercise is especially good, since it makes for a lean, lithe look, not the look of an OX, as in Arnold Shwarzenegger or other bodybuilers... for men, it can result in the look of a gymnast, or the physique of Frank Zane in his prime, or Steve Reeves, just a little smaller, and healthier.  And you will fit perfectly into standard clothing, with small waisted slacks and large or extra large shirts...  it really is a win win!

God Made exercise also builds up the tendons along with the muscles, and the small, stabilizing core muscles of the neck, back, abs and even the wrists and hands- even the jaw is not ignored!  You exercise, methodically and pleasurably, almost like a kind of moving meditation, each part of your body.  You can do it anywhere, I usually am in front of the TV in my living room with a good Netflix movie on, early in the morning, but that’s just me- today I’ll do my basement workout on my rings hanging in the basement, but that’s just because I LIKE to- it’s not really necessary for health and fitness.  

I think things like gymnatics, while challenging and fun, are like what weight lifting was really intended to be about- not to CREATE health and strength, but to DEMONSTRATE IT.  This is what weight lifting was in the old days- a circus strongman kind of thing to amaze- not the actual process used to GET STRONG!

And heck, do you really want to be a circus freak?  A bearded lady, or whatever?  Or do you want to be a strong, flexible, aesthetically appealing super healthy person?  If so, all you need is your own body, bodyweight exercise and self resisted exercise, with the foundation of all a regimen of virtual resistance, generated within your own body!

So, really think about what I’m telling you- you have within you the power to be perfectly fit and healthy, as God intended you to be!  Just use His tools:

PaleoJay Podcast #60 God Made Always Beats Man Made- in Nutrition AND Exercise!


This seems to be such a blatantly obvious statement, but just think about it-

USUALLY it is ignored!

Most of the population of the Western world at least, and increasingly the whole world, subsists more and more on.... fake, processed, and fast foods!  Large quantities of refined grains and sugars; both made from genetically modified - MAN MADE- sources- GMO wheat and GMO sugar beets, primarily.  Throw in a lot of high fructose corn syrup and processed industrial seed oils, both of which are also MAN MADE, sprinkle on some chemical sweeteners and flavorings and colorings for good measure...

And you have a man made nightmare of NON-NUTRITION!!

It is really, really, really necessary, not just optional, to get back to eating real, GOD MADE foods if we want to regain or enhance our health, and that of our families.

The only viable way to do this, really, is to start cooking and eating at HOME, most of the time, for most people!  If you have an unlimited budget, and LOTS of free time, AND you live in an area where the Paleo diet has caught on in a big way, and meals are offered in restaurants that are made of real, Paleo, God made foods, well then this is an option for you- congratulations!  You have just freed up more time and energy for optimizing your God made exercise, and getting more sleep and meditation built into your life.  But for most us- we don’t live where nearly ANYONE even has heard of the Paleo diet, much less supports it!  And, most of us do NOT have an unlimited budget, and unlimited time!  Surprise surprise surprise!!

So, we eat and cook at home- and, if you are like me, that is what you prefer, anyway!  I love to grill at home; that’s what I plan to do after I work out this frigid Sunday afternoon- grass fed steak and sweet potato fries in coconut and olive oil on the grill!  Wowzer!!

The crock pot is great as well- I just made a BIG pot of turkey soup last week, with the broth from my last grilled chicken carcass as the stock, and plenty of veggies, garlic, and turkey meat.  Cook in quantity, and you are set for the week- you can easily freeze smaller portions- heck, around here we can just set the containers outside on the porch and store them frozen there!

Make a plate of eggs in the AM, and get some pastured bacon for your frying pan, and cook the eggs in the good fat from that!  Or, get a soft boiled egg maker- I have one, it was about $20 years ago- a little electric machine that makes 6 perfect hard or soft boiled eggs at a time, in just a few minutes- I really have become addicted to soft boiled eggs!  I also recommend a Rosle soft boiled egg cutter to easily remove the top of the egg mess free, and some little egg cups and tiny spoons... sounds elaborate, but for a very small investment, you can begin incorporating some top-notch God made nutrition into your family’s life- it’s like a little, fun ritual, opening those little gold-centered nuggets of nutrition and scooping them out!

A big salad with pastured meat or fish at lunch, and grilled meat at supper with veggies slathered in grass fed butter- it really is that easy!  Have some wine with that!!

Of course, you know that I also use as a foundation of God made food my Paleo Smoothie, detailed here at length on my site at www.paleojay.com, and in my eBooks.
All you need is a Vitamix blender, and you can be like me, and whip up the healthiest beverage on the planet each and every day!  Although now I find, since I have added in the avocado, I can usually only get through a canister of my smoothie every two, or even three days- it is that filling and nutritious.

So, let’s say you have the nutrition all figured out, and God is providing... you are MORE than half way to ideal health!  NOW, you just need to add in

GOD MADE EXERCISE!

Here is where I really veer off from the standard Paleolithic crowd!  The standard recommendations would be to join a good Crossfit gym, do power lifting, like squats, bench presses and deadlifts, and also incorporated Olympic lifts into your routine!

My gosh, if you are new to this, I’ll bet you want to quit right now... but don’t- not only are all of these heavy weight moves NOT necessary, they are actually counterproductive, long term!  The heavy weights will compress your spine, particularly in the squat and deadlift, and the bench press will destroy your shoulders and elbows, long term.  And, you can accomplish all you need to, and would want to, without any danger of injury, using your OWN BODY AS GOD INTENDED!

Have you ever seen a cat use weights to build its incredibly lithe, sculpted, and functional physique?  Or any animal?  NO, they know how to maintain their perfect health and musculature- the do the animal equivalent of Perfectly Paleo Exercise!

They use their own body to supply the resistance needed to perfectly develop and sculpt the muscle- this is really all that you need.  And, it will develop your body in an aesthetically pleasing way, since although muscle size and shape will be the result, just as in heavy weight training- it will come without unnecessary BULK, and injury.

And for Heaven’t sake, don’t get me started on long distance running and injury and muscle loss- it’s even worse...

For women, in particular, this Perfectly Paleo form of exercise is especially good, since it makes for a lean, lithe look, not the look of an OX, as in Arnold Shwarzenegger or other bodybuilers... for men, it can result in the look of a gymnast, or the physique of Frank Zane in his prime, or Steve Reeves, just a little smaller, and healthier.  And you will fit perfectly into standard clothing, with small waisted slacks and large or extra large shirts...  it really is a win win!

God Made exercise also builds up the tendons along with the muscles, and the small, stabilizing core muscles of the neck, back, abs and even the wrists and hands- even the jaw is not ignored!  You exercise, methodically and pleasurably, almost like a kind of moving meditation, each part of your body.  You can do it anywhere, I usually am in front of the TV in my living room with a good Netflix movie on, early in the morning, but that’s just me- today I’ll do my basement workout on my rings hanging in the basement, but that’s just because I LIKE to- it’s not really necessary for health and fitness.

Why you should NOT work out with Heavy Weights! AND- this is the last day of the $299 Vitamix sale, with free shipping!

This is an important piece of advice from someone who has "been there"!

There is no reason to train with super heavy weights, and although you should train hard, you should never, every train to failure.  This is training you, literally, to fail- why would that be your goal?  Mentally and physically, it is debilitating: imagine that you are doing a set of squats, say, with a heavy barbell across your shoulders... (not a good idea in itself, we are looking at severe spinal compression here!)... and, you go to failure.  

By definition, this means your form starts breaking down, compromising your safe stance.  Even if you are (hopefully!) in a power rack, your form collapsing renders you vulnerable to damage from a shifting weight on your back!

You can achieve the same result by using visualized resistance, bodyweight exercises, ring or parallette bar training, and isometric moves with complete safety.  And even better results!

You can decide to make a movement as productive as if you were loaded with heavy weights, just by internally tensing the muscles throughout the range of motion, using only a small weight or, even with no weight at all!  It's all in how you perform the movement.

PaleoJay podcast #59 Add an Avocado a Day, to the Smoothie from Paleo Jay! A response to Thomas Hobbes... Also, add a good Paleo FIRE, and bond with an Animal!! And hey- beans aren’t THAT BAD!!


OK, I am really sold on the idea of ketogenic diets, meaning eat a high fat, low carb diet as a prescription for curing a LOT of problems.  If you have an auto-immune disease, meaning a disease where your body is attacking itself, like celiac disease (intolerance to gluten- which is just about ALL of us!), irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, arthritis, and EVERY disease that ends with ITIS- a ketogenic diet will really help all of these, and more!!

There are so many problems with our current, modern, processed Western diet that I can’t even start:  So, let’s just start over, shall we??  Reboot yourself!

If you don’t want to have a  “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short life” , to quote Thomas Hobbes, a 17th century philosopher of sorts who was a monarchist- he wanted us all to live under monarchies!- we were supposed, (according to Thomas Hobbes) to succumb to authority... and live in civilization.

“Au Contraire! “ says the Wisconsin Philosoper PaleoJay.

The solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short life that he was talking about was actually what was available to the average civilized person of Hobbe’s own era, which was 17th century Britain!

Hunter Gatherers, barbarians, and Paleo folks actually lived vital, long lives on average, once you took newborn mortality out of the equation...

Child mortality was VERY high in the old days- BUT, if you survived birthing, you would probably live 70-100 years, and in a very healthy state, barring death by wounds, animals eating you, or accidents.

Nowadays, however, modern people live solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short lives, shortened by Diabesity: diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and all the other “itis” diseases of civilization- All caused by our modern, processed, poor, nasty, brutish diet!!

What to do??

Well, for long time readers and listeners to PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe-

Just sidle up to a stool at the Cafe- and ORDER A TALL, COOL, PALEO SMOOTHIE!


That will take care of most of your modern ills... really!

That and eliminating grains, sugar and processed foods from your diet!

The thing is; you want a LOT of good, healthy FAT in your diet- you really, really do!  It is the key to being Ketogenic, which means triggering your body to burn FAT as fuel, rather than sugars and carbs...

Coconut milk and oil are GREAT- Avocado is the missing ingredient!

But Jay- how do I use an avocado in the Paleo Smoothie??

Good question, Mr. Hobbes:  Just cut the avocado lengthwise.  Take out the giant pit (the avocado is actually a FRUIT, Mr. Hobbes, just like YOU, you dummy!)-

Then, scoop out the insides with a spoon, and drop into your waiting Vitamix!!

That Vitamix will turn the veggies, avocado, raw pastured eggs, kefir, spices, berries, and everything else you have put into it into a nectar of the Gods:

The fount of life, if you will: ALL THE NUTRITION YOU CAN HANDLE, AND THAT WILL INSURE MAXIMUM HEALTH, WELLNESS, AND FITNESS!!

They say to never overpromise, and I assure you: I am not!

More FAT will make you LESS fat!  YES!!  It’s all too true...

Drink a Paleo Smoothie like this, each day- and you will be satisfied, healthy, and loaded with nutrients that your body has been craving forever!

Enough on that, Thomas Hobbes!  I have another point or two for you:

You know, beans ain’t that bad!  AND, go sit by a fire, and bond with an animal!

Yes, it’s true: the Paleo Canon has dictated that BEANS, aka LEGUMES are EVIL...

But, it turns out that, properly prepared, they are NOT.  They’re not that great, but they are also... not that BAD.  If they have been soaked for 12 hours in water, leaching off the toxins, they are, well alright in a pinch!

But they are NOT like wheat gluten!  Kind of innocuous, really.  So, if you want a few beans in your chili- go crazy my friend Tom!

Same goes for cashews- a legume- wow, are they tasty!  And, it turns out, not bad at all- go ahead, Mr. Thomas Hobbes- eat them- your life will be no less short or more nasty!  Just don’t go crazy; use moderation, you 17th century dude!

Just do NOT eat peanuts- they really are pretty darn bad- loaded with aflatoxins, which are a particularly nasty mold that is just about inevitable in this particular legume of the peanut... just avoid peanuts, entirely- go for almond butter, which tastes at LEAST as good, instead!

So, have some beans in you chili (once in a while, if properly prepared...);

And eat some cashews- YES!!

But, do it in front of a fire, preferably along with some FURRY ANIMALS!!

I think that the idea of a campfire is completely, viscerally... PALEO!

It’s also something that a Britisher like you, THOMAS HOBBES would find very appealing!!  For how many millennia do you think that our ancestors sat around campfires, under the stars, and gazed into the flames?   And, as they sat, you know they told stories, sang songs, and petted their furry friends as they drank fermented beverages and ate dried jerky...


Pets, like dogs and cats, were the camp followers of ancient days!  And so, if you want a totally fulfilled, Paleo life: here is what you need:

A life without grains, processed foods and sugars!

A life with LOTS of NUTRIENTS: Either a Paleo Smoothie, along with grass fed meats and dairy and fermented foods...

OR

BOTH OF THE ABOVE!

Sorry, Thomas my boy: I set that up!  But, for you, I would recommend:

Just get a cat or two, maybe a dog as well... Get a little London apartment with a fireplace (they all have them in your day!), and get a grate to roast meat on in the fireplace- I know, for you, the Paleo Smoothie is  problematic- so, just get a lot of veggies at the market in town, meats (I know they will ALL be grass fed!!), and throw the bread at Will Shakespeare’s head...

Pet your cats.  Throw stuff for your dogs to chase...

And then, just chill out!  Look into history- google it if you will!

Maximum nutrition ALWAYS trumps Maximum MEDICINE!

As Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine says:

“Primum non nocerum. (First do no harm)”

THIS is the dictum that modern doctors should take to heart:  Do no HARM!

If this was taken to heart, STATIN DRUGS would be off the MAP!!!


Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.

The other thing I’ve really been having fun with and want to recommend to all of you in our PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe Tribe- Rings and Parallette bar training!  If you are unfamiliar with these gymnastic tools, they really are a great way to enhance the bodyweight workouts that Perfectly Paleo Exercise consists of.  Pushups on the rings are a totally different animal, far more challenging and more inclusive of the stabilizer muscles in the arms, shoulders, chest and back... as are Dips on the rings, chins and pullups on the rings, flies on the rings- I mean, you can do a LOT on the rings, and I am just scratching the surface!  The real beauty of the rings is that they twist in your hands, and do not stress your joints unnaturally, which can happen in movements using a bar, or even hands set directly on the floor as in doing pushups.  This is why I use a Perfect Pushup device when doing high rep pushups- it revolves with your hand, taking stress off of the shoulder joints- rings do the same thing, but for LOTS of exercises!

Today, for instance, I did a complete Visualized Resistance training routine in the early morning, as I watched a streaming Netflix movie- (Centurian- highly recommended)!

Then, using my Perfect Pushup handles like a mini-parallette bar, I did L-sits and some other P-bar exercises at the end, and it was challenging and kind of fun too!  A good way to test your growing strength and body awareness developed through your Perfectly Paleo exercise regimen...

My rings are hung from the rafters in my basement, and so when I workout down there, in the primitive domain of my old farmhouse cellar, I can turn myself upside down, and do all kinds of gymnastic things on the rings, and then go to my home made P-bars, which are higher off the ground than my Perfect Pushups handles, and try some more advanced tricks, since my legs are up higher and more maneuverable.

So, make yourself some P-bars, and hang a set of rings- they are cheap, VERY effective, and actually fun to use!  A great addition to your Perfectly Paleo routine!!

Now, that’s the fun part of this podcast- let’s delve into the realm of Obama care...

I don’t care where you stand politically, you have to understand that Government Run health care is anything but healthy- and this means not only for you and your personal health, and that of your family, but  for your fiscal health, and the fiscal health of our country!  

The notion of Big Health Care itself is wrongheaded- it is the path we have been on for a long time, decades actually, and has resulted in the fattest, sickest, most disease ridden population since the time of the Black Plague- only this time, the sicknesses are caused by our own poor diets, poor exercise habits, and lack of sleep!  AND, this is all exacerbated by the many unnecessary prescriptions of pharmaceutical drugs, all of which are loaded with side-effects, many side-effects consisting of things worse than the disease they are meant to prevent!

Don’t put your family’s health in the hands of any Giant Corporation like a big Medical Clinic unless they are in an auto accident, have a bullet wound, or some other major medical catastrophe!  Modern medicine is great a fixing extreme injuries; it is terrible at building and maintaining health.  They can only prescribe drugs that only mask the symptoms of disease, and allow the root cause to continue to grow worse!  

Self- reliance is the only way in which to become, and stay healthy!  YOU are responsible for what you eat- so eat in the way modern science and our ancestral knowledge are in complete agreement- eat a paleo type of diet!  Ancestral, no processed foods, no grains and lowish carbs!

Lots of vegetables and high fat!! Good, saturated, natural FATS should be the foundation, the pillar of your diet and health!

Natural, God-made protein, in the form of wild game and fish, fermented raw dairy, and pastured animals!!

Move naturally in nature, walk, hike, do your visualized resistace, perfectly paleo types of exercises, swing on your new set of rings, balance on your P-bars...

Get plenty of sleep!  Minimize stress, and celebrate with your TRIBE of family and neighbors and friends, connect even online with a tribe or two, like this one.
Do NOT, again, rely on anyone else, much less Big Government to make you healthy!

They have been wrong for over 50 years in their prescriptions, both for our food recommendations, and in their drug recommendations.  Don’t wait another 50 years for them to admit they were wrong!  Take charge of your own health- do what you already know in your heart, and through your intuition to be the right thing to do.  And, if you actually do the research, you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that all of the recent science supports the evolutionary dietary approach.  ALL!

Just because your Doctor went to medical school decades ago, and still believes all of the stuff he was taught then that was wrong then, and doesn’t know about, and/or can’t admit to himself and you that what he’s been telling you for years is all WRONG NOW TOO- this does not give him the right to continue spouting the party line!

As Obama Care begins to take over, trust me- you do not want to be part of that system!
Bypass it, by becoming as healthy as you can!  Say NO to pharmaceutical drugs- fake science like Flu shots- the Carb dominated My Plate created to sell grains- processed man-made fake foods!

Eat foods made by God, not man!  And stay AWAY from ANY sort of Government sort of health plan, as much as you can. To paraphrase the great John Wesley:

Get as healthy as you can, and help others to get as healthy as they can, for as long as you can!

Are we really Paleo, or are we... Barbarians?? PaleoJay podcast #57

Are both "paleo"?


First off, I want to say- I am so glad to have my computer back and running!  Thanks so much to Elan technology of Columbus Ohio for “saving my PASTURED bacon!”  New hard drive with total data recovery- thank guys!!  And now, lets go into the show:

I have always loved the Paleo metaphor for diet and lifestyle!  Paleo, ancestral, primal; they all kind of work- they get the idea across that we have strayed from our roots- our future is in our past- we have REALLY MESSED THINGS UP!!

But, when I really think about it, at this point we should really call ourselves barbarians!

I have always loved reading about ancient history and civilizations!  Did you know that the mummies of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs tend to be riddled with artherosclerosis, arthritis, and most of the modern diseases that we thought were only... modern!?

Well, they are!  The Egyptians of thousands of years ago might have been surrounded by “barbarians” that had none of these diseases, and most of their own lower classes probably were also immune, since they didn’t have the money to eat lots of grains, mainly in the form of sweetened confections that the upper classes prized.  The more in depth that the old mummies are studied, the more modern diseases are discovered in these ancient corpses!

And then there is Tacitus...  a Roman from 98 A.D., he wrote about the German barbarians of the time- 

“he mentions that they all have common physical characteristics, blue eyes (truces et caerulei oculi = "sky-coloured, azure, dark blue, dark green), reddish hair ( rutilae comae = "red, golden-red, reddish yellow") and large bodies, vigorous at the first onset but not tolerant of exhausting labour, tolerant of hunger and cold but not of heat.[2]
In Chapter 7, Tacitus describes their government and leadership as somewhat merit-based and egalitarian, with leadership by example rather than authority and that punishments are carried out by the priests. He mentions (Ch. 8) that the opinions of women are given respect. In Chapter 9, Tacitus describes a form of folk assembly rather similar to the publicThings recorded in later Germanic sources: in these public deliberations, the final decision rests with the men of the tribe as a whole.”
Sounds like a pretty fair, modern group of folks, really, doesn’t it?  He goes on to say that they don’t eat much grains, being from a cold, inhospitable land (nothing like the sunny Mediteranean!!) and mainly subsist on meat, vegetables, and dairy herds!  Sounds pretty PRIMAL, doesn’t it?  I think these guys would have loved a good Paleo smoothie, along with a nice grass fed steak topped with butter and bacon!  And think of this: potatoes weren’t even discovered yet!!  These ancient barbarians were golden!!

At any rate, what I think about the German barbarians is this: WE, we Paleo folk, are more like THEM than pure hunter/ gatherers!  WE live in civilization, or preferably on the outskirts of it (in more rural communities that are self-sufficient), and can choose to pick and choose from what civilization has to offer, but ignore and pass by the decadence and rotten morals that it is also riddled with...  We can use the technology of civilization, but ignore and shun the GMO’s, the pharmaceutical poisons, and the toxic processed fake foods!

We instinctively know better!  

We can be Noble Barbarians! Taking what we want of value of modern civilized society, and ignoring and reviling what we KNOW to be foul!  

Kind of gives you a mission, doesn’t it?  Do what’s right- 
  1. Eat what’s right- only real food... RIGHT??
  2. Exercise right- real, bodyweight, and moving-through-nature exercise!
  3. Sleep right, plenty of it!
  4. LIVE right- avoid decadence and the EVILS that civilization tends to accumulate
  5. Live TRIBALLY- this is what the barbarians kept up from paleolithic times- a TRIBE is the only natural agglomeration of peoples that really works, and that keeps everyone accountable!  No welfare in a tribe!!

And there you have it!  Another thing the Romans noticed-  They realized that these barbarians were awfully similar to their own ancestors!  The upper classes all had “ancestor rooms” in their houses, with wax faces of the ancestors going back hundreds of years, which they saw every day since they were children...  and the oldest ones were..
 blue eyes ("sky-coloured, azure, dark blue, dark green), reddish hair  "red, golden-red, reddish yellow") and large bodies

In other words, they recognized that these barbarians were in face the same tribes of people that had originally conquered Italy in the early days, and were just like their own ancestors!  Blonde hair was particularly prized by ancient Romans...
So, let’s be proud to be Paleo/Barbarians!  Best of both worlds!!

PaleoJay Podcast #55-

It really is rather remarkable- even the usually middle-of-the-road, inside the box thinker and conventional diet cheerleader Dr. Oz has come on board with him along with his new, excellent book Grain Brain.  I know, it seems unbelievable that the Wizard of Oz, who has been the man hiding behind the curtain of outdated science for all these years, has now come out and jumped on the anti-grain, low carb, paleo bandwagon!

I don’t know what happened; maybe the wizard gave himself a medal, and got courage ala the cowardly lion- who knows?  At any rate, it appears that Dr. Oz refers patients to Dr. Perlmutter, simply because using his methods and theories of proper diet, he gets real-world GREAT RESULTS!

YES, FAT IS BACK!!

And carbohydrates, particularly GRAINS, and even more specifically WHEAT are all shown to be the dietary nightmare that they really are!

This turnaround by Dr. Oz seems to be a real turnabout of the entire dietary lipid hypothesis, that has been around since the 1960’s, and has never been proven...

You know, the hypothesis that virtually everyone has taken as gospel for all those past 50 years or so, the same 50 years that obesity has exploded, and diabetes, cancer, and heart disease are rampant in their spreading across the nation, and the world!

The hypothesis that told us fat is bad, grains are good... sugar is fine, whole grains are the foundation of our nutrition and  places them at the base of our stupid Food Pyramid and now My Plate...

Well, this whole theory is wrong- not only wrong, but exactly opposite of how we should be eating!  It truly boggles the mind that it has taken this long to convince people to start to look at the truth- I guess it kind of shows the completely addictive qualities of grains and sugars:

We don’t WANT to give up our DRUGS!

For that is indeed what they are, grains and sugar have drug-like effects, that also have the effect of making us fat, diabetic, and progressively very, very sick.


So, read David Perlmutter’s book- get the audio version if you don’t have time to read; that way you can just listen as you drive!  But get his ideas into your head, so that they can save your mind, and the rest of your body!  It’s never too late, as he points out, he has very elderly people reverse their symptoms of dementia, along with a host of other diseases, quite quickly.

Go Paleo, young or old, man or woman!!

The other thing I want you to remember to do?

ADD IN GOOD FOODS!  Eating a paleo diet is not just about subtractions!!

There are a number of folks who go gluten free- well, this is a great first step, but eating bakery goods made with rice flour, etc.- while not containing gluten, these products still  turn to sugar, right in your little mouth, and then proceed to poison your rapidly growing NOT so little body.

Step two- you give up grains!  This will really get you healthier, fast- but NOT if you still eat lots of processed foods, sugar, rice, soy- you will still be raising your blood sugar to dangerous levels!  All these years of worrying about our cholesterol levels- we should have been monitoring our blood sugar levels...

Step 3- add in lots of fats and vegetables!  A Paleo Diet is not just about eliminating bad, man made foods- more importantly, it is about
ADDING IN LOTS OF REAL, GOD-MADE FOODS!!!

Pastured butter- rich in K2- it takes calcium away from heel spurs, fights kidney stones, heart plaque, helps blood pressure regulate, and actually can help you remineralize your teeth and bones!  Pastured eggs, grass fed beef, pastured pork, organic vegetables of all sorts are all wonderful foods, and grass fed beef liver is a fountain of youth!  Full fat Greek yogurt, raw milk and cream, bacon- believe it or not, these are all extremely satisfying and healthy foods!
As for fruit, it is wonderful as well- in small amounts!  I usually use a handful of berries to flavor my daily paleo smoothie, perhaps with a small apple, and that will be it for fruit that day.  That’s all you need- berries in particular are loaded with nutrients and phytonutrients, but they come with the cost of raising your blood sugar- so keep it minimal!  Safe starches?  Same story- keep them minimal!!

A half cup of rice, a sweet potato on occasion- these are fine, and keep us part of  traditional eating in society... but keep it minimal!  Anything that raises blood sugar dramatically is playing with fire!

When tempted to eat sugar or carbs, just eat more fat and protein!  Throw in some veggies, perhaps steamed or grilled and then slathered with butter...

Don’t go hungry!  Just eat the right foods- real, God Made Foods!!

This is the way to health.
