World Renowned Heart Surgeon Speaks Out On What Really Causes Heart Disease

January 21, 2015 - We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong. So, here it is. I freely admit to being wrong.. As a heart surgeon with 25 years experience, having performed over 5,000 open-heart surgeries,today is my day to right the wrong with medical and scientific fact.

I trained for many years with other prominent physicians labelled “opinion makers.”  Bombarded with scientific literature, continually attending education seminars, we opinion makers insisted heart disease resulted from the simple fact of elevated blood cholesterol.

The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake. The latter of course we insisted would lower cholesterol and heart disease. Deviations from these recommendations were considered heresy and could quite possibly result in malpractice.

It Is Not Working!

These recommendations are no longer scientifically or morally defensible. The discovery a few years ago that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease is slowly leading to a paradigm shift in how heart disease and other chronic ailments will be treated.

The long-established dietary recommendations have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the consequences of which dwarf any historical plague in terms of mortality, human suffering and dire economic consequences.

Despite the fact that 25% of the population takes expensive statin medications and despite the fact we have reduced the fat content of our diets, more Americans will die this year of heart disease than ever before.

Statistics from the American Heart Association show that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease, 20 million have diabetes and 57 million have pre-diabetes. These disorders are affecting younger and younger people in greater numbers every year.

Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped.

Inflammation is not complicated — it is quite simply your body’s natural defence to a foreign invader such as a bacteria, toxin or virus. The cycle of inflammation is perfect in how it protects your body from these bacterial and viral invaders. However, if we chronically expose the body to injury by toxins or foods the human body was never designed to process,a condition occurs called chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is just as harmful as acute inflammation is beneficial.

What thoughtful person would willfully expose himself repeatedly to foods or other substances that are known to cause injury to the body?  Well,smokers perhaps, but at least they made that choice willfully.

The rest of us have simply followed the recommended mainstream dietthat is low in fat and high in polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates, not knowing we were causing repeated injury to our blood vessels. Thisrepeated injury creates chronic inflammation leading to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.

Let me repeat that: The injury and inflammation in our blood vessels is caused by the low fat diet recommended for years by mainstream medicine.

What are the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation? Quite simply, they are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flourand all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower that are found in many processed foods.

Take a moment to visualize rubbing a stiff brush repeatedly over soft skin until it becomes quite red and nearly bleeding. you kept this up several times a day, every day for five years. If you could tolerate this painful brushing, you would have a bleeding, swollen infected area that became worse with each repeated injury. This is a good way to visualize the inflammatory process that could be going on in your body right now.

Regardless of where the inflammatory process occurs, externally or internally, it is the same. I have peered inside thousands upon thousands of arteries. A diseased artery looks as if someone took a brush and scrubbed repeatedly against its wall. Several times a day, every day, the foods we eat create small injuries compounding into more injuries, causing the body to respond continuously and appropriately with inflammation.

While we savor the tantalizing taste of a sweet roll, our bodies respond alarmingly as if a foreign invader arrived declaring war. Foods loaded with sugars and simple carbohydrates, or processed withomega-6 oils for long shelf life have been the mainstay of the American diet for six decades. These foods have been slowly poisoning everyone.

How does eating a simple sweet roll create a cascade of inflammation to make you sick?

Imagine spilling syrup on your keyboard and you have a visual of what occurs inside the cell. When we consume simple carbohydrates such as sugar, blood sugar rises rapidly. In response, your pancreas secretes insulin whose primary purpose is to drive sugar into each cell where it is stored for energy. If the cell is full and does not need glucose, it is rejected to avoid extra sugar gumming up the works.

When your full cells reject the extra glucose, blood sugar rises producing more insulin and the glucose converts to stored fat.

What does all this have to do with inflammation? Blood sugar is controlled in a very narrow range. Extra sugar molecules attach to a variety of proteins that in turn injure the blood vessel wall. This repeated injury to the blood vessel wall sets off inflammation. When you spike your blood sugar level several times a day, every day, it is exactly like taking sandpaper to the inside of your delicate blood vessels.

While you may not be able to see it, rest assured it is there. I saw it in over 5,000 surgical patients spanning 25 years who all shared one common denominator — inflammation in their arteries.

Let’s get back to the sweet roll. That innocent looking goody not only contains sugars, it is baked in one of many omega-6 oils such as soybean. Chips and fries are soaked in soybean oil; processed foods are manufactured with omega-6 oils for longer shelf life. While omega-6’s are essential -they are part of every cell membrane controlling what goes in and out of the cell — they must be in the correct balance with omega-3’s.

If the balance shifts by consuming excessive omega-6, the cell membrane produces chemicals called cytokines that directly cause inflammation.

Today’s mainstream American diet has produced an extreme imbalance of these two fats. The ratio of imbalance ranges from 15:1 to as high as 30:1 in favor of omega-6. That’s a tremendous amount of cytokines causing inflammation. In today’s food environment, a 3:1 ratio would be optimal and healthy.

To make matters worse, the excess weight you are carrying from eating these foods creates overloaded fat cells that pour out large quantities of pro-inflammatory chemicals that add to the injury caused by having high blood sugar. The process that began with a sweet roll turns into a vicious cycle over time that creates heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetesand finally, Alzheimer’s disease, as the inflammatory process continues unabated.

There is no escaping the fact that the more we consume prepared and processed foods, the more we trip the inflammation switch little by little each day. The human body cannot process, nor was it designed to consume, foods packed with sugars and soaked in omega-6 oils.

There is but one answer to quieting inflammation, and that is returning to foods closer to their natural state. To build muscle, eat more protein. Choose carbohydrates that are very complex such as colorful fruits and vegetables. Cut down on or eliminate inflammation- causing omega-6 fats like corn and soybean oil and the processed foods that are made from them.

One tablespoon of corn oil contains 7,280 mg of omega-6; soybean contains 6,940 mg. Instead, use olive oil or butter from grass-fed beef.

Animal fats contain less than 20% omega-6 and are much less likely to cause inflammation than the supposedly healthy oils labelled polyunsaturated. Forget the “science” that has been drummed into your head for decades. The science that saturated fat alone causes heart disease is non-existent. The science that saturated fat raises blood cholesterol is also very weak. Since we now know that cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease, the concern about saturated fat is even more absurd today.

The cholesterol theory led to the no-fat, low-fat recommendations that in turn created the very foods now causing an epidemic of inflammation. Mainstream medicine made a terrible mistake when it advised people to avoid saturated fat in favor of foods high in omega-6 fats. We now have an epidemic of arterial inflammation leading to heart disease and other silent killers.

What you can do is choose whole foods your grandmother served and not those your mom turned to as grocery store aisles filled with manufactured foods. By eliminating inflammatory foods and adding essential nutrients from fresh unprocessed food, you will reverse years of damage in your arteries and throughout your body from consuming the typical American diet.

Apple Cider Vinegar is a Natural! Paleo Quick tip of the Day #69

Hi! I cure everything!

  One very important component of a good natural diet that you are probably missing out on is…Apple Cider Vinegar!  ACV has been recommended since the time of Hippocrates, by Hippocrates, and that is high accolades indeed, since he is the founder of Western medicine!

Of course, the modern day practitioners of the art he founded, the AMA and the doctors under that umbrella, have strayed very far from the natural cures Hippocrates touted, since he believed health lay in our diet and lifestyle, and modern medical practitioners ignore nutrition and lifestyle almost totally, relying instead on the latest and greatest pills, potions, and surgeries.  But we know better now, don’t we?  We are, you might say:

“Hip to Hippocrates!”
“First DO NO HARM!”

“Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food”
Walking is man's best medicine. ”

Now those are some quotes I’d like to hear from MY family doctor!

But to get back on track, back to ACV- let me say this: not only is ACV probably one of the best probiotics you can possibly take, it has a host of other benefits; so many in fact, that I recommend you have a bottle in the bathroom, and another in the kitchen!

In my daily green paleo smoothie I always include a healthy portion (several ounces) of ACV- this serves to dilute the ACV so the taste in not a problem, and also it won’t stress your tooth enamel!  Always dilute the ACV when taking internally for this reason.  Also, I use Bragg’s ACV- it’s like the Vitamix of vinegars- around the longest, and totally reliable to be the best!  Shake the bottle before using to distribute “the Mother”; I.e. The yeasty, cloudy portion that gives the “life” to the vinegar evenly.

I recently got poison ivy while brush cutting at the family cabin.  What helped immensely was ACV!  I just swabbed it on the affected areas, and it took the itch right away- then, I sprinkled on baking soda (another thing you should have in your kitchen AND bathroom!), and I am totally itch free.  ACV actually draws the toxins out of your skin!

ACV is a great cleaner, too- but I usually use the cheap white vinegar for that.  Don’t consume white vinegar- it’s a dead product, distilled and with no food value whatsoever. But put some in a spray bottle, and it will do a better job than all of those nasty, expensive chemical cleaners that are so toxic and evil- Clean with Vinegar!  It also is a great weed killer- just spray it on a weed and you will kill it, again; without toxic chemicals.

ACV can cure heartburn, dandruff (just rub it on your scalp). It’s a great antibacterial and anti fungal, and is great to gargle with for a sore throat.
Rub some on your dog or cat’s fur to kill fleas!  In the ancient world they used it to cleanse wounds, so it is also great for cuts and scratches.  Rub it on your face for a skin toner and acne fighter, and put it on skin moles to get rid of them as well!

ACV is truly amazing, and can change your health for the better, both inside, and on the outside of your body- naturally!

PaleoJay's Smoothie Cafe #104 Your Doctor can NOT save you from a bad Lifestyle!!

One of the biggest scams there is in this world is that conventional medicine, which is the kind of treatment you can get from an American clinic or hospital can make you WELL!  Nothing is further from the truth…a medical doctor of today just means that that person is a member of the biggest, most powerful labor union in history- the American Medical Association.  This is a labor union par excellence- it guarantees incredibly high wages for the practitioners in “the Brotherhood” as Malcolm Kendrick calls it, as long as those doctors tow the line, don’t rock the boat, and follow “approved” treatments ONLY- things like chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery only for cancer treatment- nothing else can even be considered, or the doctor doing so can be thrown out of the union- in other words -lose their high priced and time consuming right to practice medicine!

Your doctor is actually forbidden to recommend common sense lifestyle and diet changes to actually cure your condition, and is instead forced to recommend expensive pharmaceutical drugs (all of which have side effects, often worse than the disease!), and surgeries only.  None of these options do any thing at all to address your disease or condition- they only mask the symptoms so you might feel a little better.  You will go home with your expensive prescriptions for drugs that make BILLIONS of dollars for the pharmaceutical companies annually, and billions of dollars for the medical clinic that prescribed them- all without curing your condition in the slightest.

You see, the pharmaceutical companies fund most of the research, and bankroll the medical colleges where the future M.D’s train.  They have a mutually beneficial relationship- the doctors recommend their products; in fact insist the patient use these products, and then everyone makes lots and lots of money… except YOU.  You are left sick, with endless pills and/or painful and damaging surgeries to endure, and are now a drug addict!  Even though your drugs are LEGAL, they are still usually endlessly necessary and actually addicting once you start, and hugely expensive- and, even though your medical insurance (if you have it) will mask the true costs since you only need a co-pay, rest assured that the ultimate cost is there, it is huge, and you are paying it through your other many taxes that are set to continue rising forever!

And let’s talk side effects: All drugs have side effects!
This is often glossed over, but if you ever pay attention to the MANY drug commercials on the television all day long, listen to the potential side effects of the most popular ones, the ones they recite rapidly while showing attractive, loving couples dancing, walking on pristine beaches, and playing with laughing children and romping dogs:  Here are the side effects of the Statin drugs, which are among the MOST prescribed drugs on earth!

Liver function, muscle wasting and pain, possible heart attack risk, increased side effects with any other drug you might be taking, depression and irritability, headaches, joint pain, and abdominal pain, tingling, numbness and burning, sleep problems, sexual function problems, dizziness and a sense of detachment.  Additionally, people have mentioned experiencing swelling, shortness of breath, vision changes, changes in temperature regulation, weight change, hunger, breast enlargement, blood sugar changes, dry skin, rashes, blood pressure changes, nausea, upset stomach, bleeding, and ringing in ears or other noises.  In addition, Statin drugs, which include Crestor, lipitor, and several other brand names tend to deplete CO q10, which is a vital substance manufactured by your body to produce cell growth and maintenance in every cell in your body- as you grow older, the supply lessens, and it can cause your heart to malfunction, and cause brain and cognition problems as well!

And all of those are from just one drug- most people, as they age and visit the doctor more frequently, are put on multiple drugs, which often have effects upon each other, independent of the drugs themselves. (Kind of like mixing heroin with cocaine and tequila, I’d imagine…)

I could go on and on about about the many, many drugs that literally are “pushed” by our doctors on behalf of their “suppliers”, the pharmaceutical companies, but I’d much rather prescribe you an antidote myself!  Here it is, the PaleoJay prescription for a long, healthy, happy, productive and disease free life:

1.  Live a natural, ancestral type of lifestyle!  Eat real foods, foods made by God and nature.  Paleolithic foods, including real organic veggies and fruits, wild caught meats and seafood, pastured butter and pork and cream and beef.  Real oils like coconut oil and lard, beef tallow and olive oil.
2. Avoid modern wheat, which is modified in a lab and loaded with gluten, and most sugar.  Sweeten slightly with local wild honey or maple syrup. Avoid processed foods, any kind of soda pop, and artificial sweeteners of any kind.  And stay far from fast foods!
3. Avoid drugs, legal or illegal- the difference between them is not really that great!
4. Get at least 8 hours of good quality sleep, each and every night!  Live with a connected “tribe” of people, relatives and friends, who try to get along and help one another and just connect as people are have evolved to do!
5.  Avoid the medical system as much as you can, as often as you can! (To paraphrase John Wesley of Methodism fame).  By this I mean, if you get in a car wreck or are shot with a bullet, our medical system is great at emergency types of medicine!  They can “patch you up” really well!  But then, you need to get OUT of there as fast as you can, and start back in on steps 1-4 above- that is the only way to rebuild your health.  The hospital knows nothing about rebuilding health, proper nutrition and lifestyle, or healthy movement and exercise!  If you need to take a drug (like an antibiotic), take it and then STOP as soon as possible, and set about rebuilding your gut biome, which is all the friendly bacteria inside you that makes you healthy and happy- they are crucial, and if you take a course of antibiotics they are gone, right along with the unfriendly ones.  Eat pre- and probiotics, kimchi and sauerkraut, kefir and pickles, all must be naturally fermented!  Apple cider vinegar like Bragg’s is one of the best sources as well.

And as long as you are feeling well and healthy?  STAY AWAY from organized medicine!  Think of your local clinic as an old time medicine man, traveling from town to town with their “miracle elixir that cures everything”- they only want your money! Their elixir might not just be whisky and water like back in the old days, it might be a far slicker sales pitch, but the bottom line is the same:

As with most procedures, there is a huge range in price even within the U.S. America's 25th percentile for appendectomies is $8,244, while the 95th percentile is $29,499. The Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand are in the $5,000 range on average.

The 95th percentile in the U.S. is a whopping $17,354 for a normal delivery. In Australia, the average is $6,623, in the Netherlands it's $2,824, and in Spain, $2,251. The American way of handling childbirth has been called the costliest in the world.

In the U.S., the 95th percentile is $27,446 for a C-section. Switzerland and Australia are in the $10,000 range on average, while America's average is over $15,000. Argentina and Spain again had the lowest average prices, with the Netherlands falling in the middle at $5,492.

Only Australia shows one instance of a higher average price than the U.S., with cataract surgery costing just $79 more. The American 95th percentile is $8,233, showing just how much prices can vary. Even the 25th percentile, $2,422, is higher than the average prices in Argentina, the Netherlands, and Spain.

Knee replacement

Average price in America: $25,398
Average price in Switzerland: $24,614
Average price in Argentina: $6,015

The average price of a knee replacement is above $20,000 in New Zealand, Australia, and Switzerland, as well as the U.S. However, America's 95th percentile shoots up to $51,128. That's the cost of nearly nine knee replacements in Argentina.

Average price in Argentina: $6,862

Hip replacements in Argentina, Spain, and the Netherlands all fall somewhere below $12,000 on average, yet America's 25th percentile for a hip replacement is $16,622, and the 95th percentile is $53,644. Artificial joint implants prices in the U.S. are inflated to begin with by the few companies that manufacture them, and then these prices are marked up several times by intermediaries, making artificial implants the single biggest cost of most joint replacement surgeries.

Bypass surgery

Average price in America: $75,345
Average price in Australia: $42,130
Average price in the Netherlands: $15,742

For bypass surgery, even America's 25th percentile of $47,982 is significantly higher than the average price of every other country surveyed. The figures for the Netherlands, Spain, and Argentina all fell under $17,000. The 95th percentile for a bypass surgery in America is $151,886.

America's 25th and 95th percentiles for angioplasty show a wide range of $16,406 to $61,184. Average prices in Spain and Switzerland are in the $10,000 range, and Argentina, the Netherlands, and Switzerland boast even lower prices for this minimally invasive procedure.

Average price in Australia: $9,982
Average price in Spain: $3,177

Though Spain has the lowest figure by far, in New Zealand the average price of a hip prosthesis is $6,723, just over half the average U.S. price. With $25,843 as the 95th percentile, this procedure could conceivably be eight times more expensive when performed in the U.S. than it would be in Spain.

Paleo Quick Tip of the Day #67- Paleo Diet for Beginners

Why should you adopt the Paleo Diet?  Well, let’s say this is your goal:  To get healthy, lean and very fit. To be completely disease and symptom free for your entire life without gradual deterioration, and stay happy and productive!

I’m sure anyone would agree that such an outcome would be wonderful! Perhaps you hardly know where to start though…

I can absolutely guarantee that if you will change the way you eat to be more in accordance with our evolutionary heritage, or the way we have adapted to the natural world, you will be MUCH healthier, MUCH leaner, and much HAPPIER than you are right now!  And I maintain that you can make these changes, and reap these fantastic results no matter how old or young you are, no matter what shape you are in now, and that these changes will happen quite rapidly as well!

Ready to get started?

You just have to need to want to make these changes!  Certain bad foods will need to be eliminated from your diet, and hopefully also the diets of your family members as well.  Wouldn’t it be great if not only YOU were healthy and happy for your lifetime, but if your spouse and children were as well??  It can happen, and again, it can happen relatively quickly too.

Most people object to doing new things because of a perception that it will “cost too much” or that it will “take too much time”.  Your new paleo lifestyle will do neither of those things, but will instead save you money by eliminating all money spent on bad, processed foods!  In addition, not driving to fast food joints but instead focusing primarily on home cooked, grilled, and slow cooked foods, you will create a family home life centered around hearth and home, as it has been throughout the vast majority of human history.  You will be going Back to the Future!

Imagine yourself lean and well muscled, right up into old age!  Imagine being able to do things in your 80’s that most people can’t do in their 30’s- you can be healthy fit and happy, without degenerative disease, just be following the Paleo sort of diet- and it’s not that hard!

Once begun, half done as they say: so let’s get started with the ACTION PLAN!

First, I would tell you to give up wheat!

This means bread, pasta, breakfast cereals, anything made from wheat.  Why?  In a word, wheat is not what it was prior to the 1970’s, when the modern form of hyper-productive, gluten loaded wheat was created in a laboratory!  This is not the wheat of the bible, or the waving fields of grain that grew in American farms for our history- this is a twisted Franken-wheat, and it will destroy, inevitably, the lining of your intestines, making you vulnerable to all the modern diseases of degeneration, while at the same time fattening you up like a grain fed farm animal!  So NO WHEAT.

Second, minimize sugar!

Sugar is also horrible in that it spikes your blood sugar, which stimulates insulin to bring it down, which leads to more hunger for more sugar, and a repetition of the cycle, over and over, day after day!
Eventually, the one-two punch of Wheat and Sugar will deliver you into the hands of diabesity, or syndrome X, which is the precurser to all modern disease!  Interestingly, wheat also falls into the sugar category, as it turns to sugar right in your mouth!  YUCK!  And it also kind of sticks as a sugary coating on your teeth and gums… just imagine the dental horrors in your future from that.

I don’t expect you to totally eliminated sugar from your diet, but for the first 30 days or so you really should- then, you will get the fastest results and realize just what kind of harm it was doing to you.  A small piece of good dark chocolate is actually quite good for you- it’s loaded with anti-oxidents after all- but keep it small.

The rest is easy, really:  eat like people did throughout history:
Meat, fish and fowl, raised naturally in the open air and water.  Not in confined animal feeding operations which are little more than animal concentration camps, and infested with disease and bad food- bad for them and for us!  These animals are kept alive with huge amounts of antibiotics and other drugs for the brief time they are kept alive before becoming OUR food- humanely raised, pastured animals and wild game are far better sources of food for us, and for the planet.

LOTS of vegetables- I mean lots!  Cover your heated veggies with loads of pastured butter (Kerry Gold is one, and Organic Valley from here in Southwestern Wisconsin is another).  The very best way to get enough vegetables in your new paleo diet is to make a Paleo Green Smoothie- my recipe is on, but in truth adding a lot of veggies, fresh or frozen into a
can of coconut milk in a Vitamix blender along with some kefir and some berries or other fruit will work no matter what you do!

Fruit is also wonderful, but you can go overboard on fruit- there is one fellow who consumes 36 bananas per day!  Don’t go this route…

There is plenty more about the Paleo or Ancestral lifestyle and diet; in fact so much as it evolves (the paleo movement is NOT static) and as new research comes in, it is incorporated into the ideals of that which we call Paleo!  Conventional medicine right now is all about ignoring new discoveries, and protecting the status quo of big food, big medicine, big government, and big pharma!

Get started on Paleo, and you will stop yourself from being victimized by those big entities- you won’t need their pills and surgeries, because you have learned not to fatten yourself on their fake foods!

Paleo Quick Tip of the Day #66 Exercise Each Morning, Forever

That sounds rather severe, but it really isn’t- think of it as a really slow, easy way to “clear the cobwebs” and slowly rev up the old bodily and mental machinery.  I don’t mean to say you should bounce up out of bed and charge away to sprint, do pull ups and pushups, and then jog for an hour, followed by stretching- not at all!

I want you to slowly awaken after a full 8 hours plus of restful sleep, in a totally blacked out room.  Take a series of deep, costal type breaths lying on your back in bed: inhale slowly, as deeply as you can, first expanding your diaphragm down by your belly, and then slowly filling up the upper portion of your lungs completely- then slowly exhale.  Do this 5-10 times, and you will be completely awake!  Go to the bathroom, and then you can go like me downstairs into the kitchen, where I start the water boiling for my coffee and tea, and do some quick warmup motions on each set of joints- elbow, neck, knees, back, shoulders- just easily rotating the joints to get the synovial fluid going, readying them for the day.  Just like a CAT.

Next, I take my first cup of coffee, laced with a teaspoon or so of coconut oil, and go to the gym... my living room!  Barefoot and with minimal clothing.  You can do similarly, but a room with a tv or computer is really nice- there you can do your morning workout with a Netflix show on!

Spread a yoga mat on the floor, and start your exercises- for my money, virtual resistance exercises are perfect to start- they completely revitalize the body as they refresh and strengthen it.  Go methodically throughout your entire musculature.  Then, go down to the mat and stretch! Finish with a back bridge if you can, and then go to your rebounder, and bounce on that for another 10 minutes.

Only watch your Netflix favorite while you are exercising- this will make you eager for the next morning when you can pick up where you left off.  Trust me, once you’ve done this for awhile, you will find the perfect exercises for you, and you will relish this early morning routine.  As you progress, you can add in more exercises- for instance, twice per week I also do several hundred pushups in sets of 30-40 with different hand spacings, alternating with hindu pushups, hindu squats, and straight-legged situps.  But just twice per week maximum!

The daily routine, with the virtual resistance, self resisted exercise like curls with one limb resisting the other, the stretching and the rebounding can, and should, ideally be done daily- it is that gentle, and pleasant.  But don’t mistake- it is also very, very effective in strengthening every inch of your body, from your neck to your toes.

Done in this manner, daily exercise is restorative, nothing to dread but something to look forward to. And you will be setting yourself up from the start for what will inevitably be a happy and productive day!

Better Living WITHOUT Chemistry!

pjsc 103  Eliminate the BAD chemicals that destroy health

One thing that I have noticed that many Paleo People seem to omit from the many changes they make in implementing an ancestral or paleo type of lifestyle is to eliminate some really bad things.  They give up grains (hard) and minimize sugars (also hard to do) in their lives, take up daily exercise and easy movement, and go to bed early to get a full 8 ours plus of sleep per night in a totally blacked-out bedroom.  They take great pains to cultivate their tribe of family, friends and church, connecting and inter-reacting on a regular basis!  They are almost THERE...

But they still go to the store, and buy incredibly toxic products, products of poison like chemical cleaners, personal care products like soaps and shampoos that are loaded with petroleum byproducts like sodium lauryl sulphate.  Sulfates strip the skin of its natural oils and increase penetration of the skin’s surface. They are also irritants for people with sensitive skin or eczema.  This is in almost every commercial soap or body wash and shampoo, and eliminating it made a huge difference for me!

Fragrance. Bottom line: If the ingredient is vague, it’s probably hiding something. “Fragrance” could actually be a cocktail of chemicals and you’d never know it. The FDA doesn’t require companies to disclose the breakdown of a fragrance’s ingredients to consumers because the chemicals that produce fragrance are considered “trade secrets.” Most of the time, synthetic chemicals and cancer-causing toxins (like phthalates, used to make fragrances last longer) are hiding under that one sneaky term. Constant exposure to fragrances has been shown to negatively impact the central nervous system and can trigger allergies, migraines and asthma symptoms. 

Parabens. These ingredients are estrogen mimickers—meaning that once applied to the skin, they enter the bloodstream, and the body mistakes them for estrogen. When the body thinks there is an abnormally high amount of estrogen present in the bloodstream due to the presence of these hormone disrupters, it reacts in various ways: decreasing muscle mass, increasing fat deposits, causing early onset of puberty and spurring reproductive difficulties in both men and women.

And lastly, there is Triclosan. This chemical is most often found in antibacterial soap. Recent studies have found that triclosan actually promotes the emergence and growth of bacteria resistant to antibiotic cleansers. It also creates dioxin, a carcinogen that has been found in high levels in human breast milk. Dioxins have disruptive effects on theendocrine system and negatively affect thyroid functions. And here’s a fun fact: dioxin is the primary toxic component of Agent Orange!
Think about it. If we are washing our bodies with soap that contains harmful ingredients every single day, this adds up over a lifetime to wreak havoc on our health.

Since there is minimal government testing on these chemicals, it becomes up to us, as smart consumers, to make informed decisions as to what does and doesn’t go on our skin.

Get good quality, natural, coconut oil based or other natural fat based soaps, shampoos and body washes.  They are out there: God made products, combined in low tech ways to make honest to God products!

Just like you should only eat natural, God made foods, you should only use natural, God made cleaning products...

And don’t even THINK about throwing a little Roundup on those cracks in your sidewalk...  oh my God- the main ingredient in roundup by Monsanto is glyphosate.

Glyphosate affects your gut bacteria just as it does weeds in your yard.
It causes extreme disruption of your beneficial microbes’ functions and lifecycles. This sets YOU up for autoimmune disease!  By killing your beneficial bacteria, which it tends to do preferentially, it allows your BAD, sugar-thriving bacteria to multiply, causing things like small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO, and all of the downstream results of weight gain, acid reflux, asthma, and- again- autoimmune diseases of all sorts.

PaleoJay's Smoothie Cafe #102 Don't make your skinny kid a fat, unhappy, sick adult!

As a “Paleo Pastor” of sorts, I wind up in lots of conversations with people who don’t really have much exposure to, or often ANY exposure to the idea of ancestral diet and lifestyle.  Actually, it is amazing to me, and actually a bit disheartening, that still, with all the latest science staring us in the face, and virtually all of it supporting the validity of the paleo type of diet- most folks still have no idea what it’s all about.

Most folks believe if they are thin they are IN- just so long as they aren’t obese, they can eat anything they want.  Especially, I hear this from parents who do NOT want to get into it with their children, who in this day and age are so coddled in what they eat and what they do that their parents  gladly get them fast food for almost every meal just because that is what the kid wants.  And then, the excuse they give to me when I point out how horribly unhealthy this is, is that:

“My kid is not fat- HE/She can eat whatever they want, because they just burn it off!”

Actually, when person is a child, and still growing, proper Paleo nutrition in the form of nutrient dense foods, and avoidance high glycemic index types of insulin spikers like grains, sugars and processed foods is more important than any time in their lives.

In the first 20 years or so of life, you are setting the groundwork for your health for the rest of your life!  Not to mention building a healthy set of muscles, tendons, organs, ligaments and bones...and the BRAIN and the moods that go with it.

So, shortchange your “skinny” kid on real, God made foods and let them eat their fill of crap fast and processed foods just because it’s “easier”... well, you are starting your precious kids off with a substandard body, prone to injury and disease- taking away their bodies ability to be sensitive to insulin, and making them gradually more and more insulin resistant.

This last is something that, although it won’t be visible for some time, leads gradually and inevitably to the syndrome called diabesity.  Your kid won’t get fat overnight, but you are laying the groundwork by changing his or her interior body chemistry and gut biome- this can and will eventually make the young adult, at a later date, prone to diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and cancer... not to mention “minor” things like tooth decay and disease, osteoporosis, and even depression, anxiety, and other mental problems!

All of those modern conditions are caused, slowly and surely, by crap food, lack of proper activity (organized sports are not proper exercise for young people), and the many chemicals we expose our children to that also alter their gut microbes in disastrous ways.  Not only noxious cleaning chemicals we spray around our houses, but more particularly in the form of antibiotics- did you know that 4 out of 5 adults takes a course of antibiotics every year?  Children probably MORE than that- and if you eat CAFO meat, you are getting a hefty dose of antibiotics in that as well, since the bulk of antibiotics we produce each year is fed to these poor animals to keep them alive in filthy, confined conditions until they’re big enough, and marbled enough with fat from our feeding them grains, to slaughter.

Don’t get me wrong- antibiotics are great; they are kind of like surgery- on some rare occasions it might be necessary, but we should do everything in our power to avoid having to use such a heavy-handed intervention.

So, even if you do have a skinny kid- keep him that way! Feed him a good, paleo type of diet, train him to drink a Paleo smoothie each day, loaded with raw greens, kefir, coconut milk, and all the other healthy additions I recommend you include in your daily smoothie to make it the healthiest, most nutrient dense food/drink on the planet!  Go on hikes with your kids, start them off with some Perfectly Paleo exercise including calisthenics, stretching, rebounding or jumping rope, and running around barefoot in the yard or park.  Garden with them- let them get dirty and replenish their vital gut microbes.  Get them out in the sun for Vitamin D, and go “forest bathing” with them in nature.

And keep them sensitive to insulin for their lifetime by not “burning out” their little pancreas when they are young by feeding them fast food “insulin spike meals” and treats, and then doom them to a disease ridden, unhappy, fat adulthood!
