Kale shake or cupcake indeed... total opposites!  Actually, I have to give the credit to that phrase from Joe Rogan, the comedian with the podcast, or else it was one of his guests- stuck in my head!  If you are into health and its cornerstone, nutrition, as I am, you realize the contrary nature of those two food choices.  The more you learn on your Paleo journey, the more surprised you are that most folks do choose- the cupcake!  

“Forgive them, for they no not what they do” is probably the best reaction to this state of affairs!  I think the bottom line is this: ALWAYS choose the MOST nutrient dense food that you have available to you!  And NEVER choose by taste alone- food is meant to taste GOOD, not so fantastic that it is like a drug and is utterly irresistible, and becomes a horrible addiction, and all you think about...  That is what processed, modern foods have become- legal drugs that destroy our precious God given bodies and vitality.  So, choose the kale shake!

I did, and have one right here beside me, along with my green tea.  Already had my paleo coffee laced with coconut oil and whipped cream...  So, if you are just starting out on the paleolithic bandwagon, how do you start?  Well, asides from my two ebooks, Paleo Quick Start and Perfectly Paleo Exercise, and getting yourself a Vitamix blender, there is a quick and easy way to get going on a real Biblical Paleo version- Go to and order a product called Amasi, which is a fermented grass fed cultured dairy product, loaded with probiotics- just what you need for a healthy digestive system and gut!  Then, you can also add Dynamic Greens powder (which can be ordered from ProHealthSpot)  By putting the Amasi from its bottle into your standard blender, along with a scoop of Dynamic Greens powder, you are pretty much making a simplified, yet still very effective version of my much more elaborate Paleo Smoothie- no muss, no fuss, and it’s a great way to try out the Paleo Smoothie idea- see what it does for the way you feel and look!  (btw, the above photo features Suero Viv, another Beyond Organic product.)

Then, you’ll undoubtedly decide to get yourself a Vitamix, and do it yourself... but, you are off to a fine start.  And if you want, you don’t even have to make your own- this Amasi Biblical Paleo smoothie will do you just fine- or maybe down the road you’ll use the Amasi as a quick meal replacement when you are traveling or away from your Vitamix blender, or just really rushed... I had some Raspberry Amasi today, before church, and just love it!  

Another idea that I would recommend if you decide to go this route- Beyond Organic also offers a Suero Viv fast/cleanse- this is the number one best route to dive right in- Suero Viv is another beverage, but it is made of cultured whey, and has all you need to nourish you for a three day fast, just drinking 6 bottles per day!  

You will NOT be hungry, and this is an ideal way (whey- haha) to RESET your body for your new healthy way of eating and living!  It’s basically free, since the cost is about what you’d pay for three days of normal, crappy food- and the end result will be a 5-10 pound weight loss, and a body cleansed of toxins and cravings for bad foods and sugars.  

Anyway, choose a Kale Shake over a Cupcake any day!  The more good quality, nutrient rich foods you can eat, you will displace the lousy fake foods because you will just be too full to eat them!  Eat LOTS of healthy foods, grass fed beef, seafood, green veggies, berries and citrus, spices and sea salt, and ditch the bread (which turns to sugar!), sugar, processed meals and foods (loaded with sugar)... you get the idea!  Sugar is bad!  Not just a little,  tiny bit bad- it’s really,really, drug-like, methamphetamine/heroin/crack cocaine BAD!

You know, it is not often that I recommend you buy something, much less a large BOOK, as in a real, page- bound printed BOOK...

But I am today!

Kelly Starrett is a man after my own heart- and he has herein catalogued and rendered accessible in a do it yourself fashion just how to maintain your own flexibility, joint health, and just plain human athleticism in a catalog-style of a real book that you can take with you throughout life, and FIX YOURSELF as you go!!

This is all right up my alley- and yours too, I hope!

There is no reason at all to go to M.D.'s, therapists of all stripes, and all other kinds of charlatans and "medicine men and women" to get fixed from pain and inflammation- 

Simple exercises and movement pattern repairs can really fix it-


The thing is, it's all up to YOU!  And that's a good thing!

Kelly has given his all to this book, and it will guide you to real health, of your joints, your movement, and your athletic (and your REAL) life!  

This is what you want, to get you pain-free, and optimized in your movements throughout your life...

Strong words, I know.  But, after a Paleo type of diet, good sleep, and Perfectly Paleo Exercise, this is the book you need to keep you totally functional and pain free, for you entire life- Becoming a Supple Leopard.

It's not cheap, but neither is any real, physical book of reference quality.  

If you have joint pain, of any variety: knee, hip, shoulder, foot, or back- Just buy this book!

To me, it's ironic that the solution to most of our medical ills is really all readily solvable:  

Paleo Diet... Paleo Exercise... Paleo "therapy" aka "Supple Leopard" therapy...

It all really is that simple!  Ditch the Doctors-

PaleoJay Podcast #27- Optimal versus average health- Eat happy animals -The wonders of coconut!

Go to a standard Medical Dr. today, and he will consider how healthy you are by comparing you to other people of your age and sex... How helpful is this, really?
Now that the vast majority of people are overweight, with inflammation run rampant in their bodies, particularly their inflamed intestines or their “leaky guts”- why, if you are healthy and fit, you will  be off of their charts in health, especially as you grow older!

The sad part is that the medical industry in now comparing  very unhealthy people, by and large, and determining from that, by plotting a Bell curve of unhealthiest to just pretty unhealthy, that if you are in the middle of that curve, you are “average healthy”.

This has nothing to do with what you are capable of in your health journey- you should be looked at as how far you are from your OPTIMAL health- or just how good could you feel, look and function?  What is your body lacking to make it the very best it could be?  

Usually, for most adults quality SLEEP is lacking- and this is a huge part of health!  Sleep, for at least 8 hours per night, will do more for your overall health than anything else- more than exercise, more than changing your diet, more than ANYTHING- it will start to cure the chronic stress and tidal wave of cortisol stress hormones that almost everyone is inundated with- so- get your rest each night!  Don’t worry about waking up, or that you are not sleeping a solid 8 hours- it is NORMAL to wake up periodically, or be half awake- this is called segmented sleep, and is the natural way to sleep- we have just forgotten it in our simplistic reduction to “sleep 8 solid hours, just like you work 8 solid hours”- this is just what we were taught by the dawn of industry when everyone worked in factories, and the day was split evenly into three 8 hour segments, and the factory whistle blew at each segment...

We’re not factory workers any longer- we are cave people!  So get in touch with your inner Cro-magnon self and sleep, wake, sleep again- just don’t cut it short!  In sleep, more really is better.  And, if you don’t believe me, well sleep on it...

Of course, you know about cutting out grains, sugars, industrial seed oils and processed foods, don’t you?  If not, you do now!  That is step #2...

Another thing you may not consider important is to eat happy animals!  Really- animals from a local farmer or rancher, cows that eat the grasses they were intended to eat, animals that are healthy and living lives as God and nature intended are not only being morally treated as they should be, but they are much more healthy for us to consume!  They don’t need to be pumped full of antibiotics and other drugs, which then go into US when we eat their meat or consume their dairy products- this really is a huge point- healthy animals make for healthy people- be they Concentration Camp Cows in Confined Animal Feeding Operations, or tortured porkers and chickens in similar circumstances, or even Foully Farmed Fish, being fed GMO corn and living in filthy cramped ponds!  All are innately WRONG, and by consuming such unhealthy creatures that we have treated so inhumanely, we are making OURSELVES likewise unhealthy!
So, eat happy animals!

Now, I think I’ll take a Kitten Break!  

Lastly, if you are not taking advantage of the wonders of the coconut, you are cheating yourself!  Get a big jar or two- one for the kitchen, and one for the bathroom!  Tropical Traditions has great quality stuff, and will ship right to your door at a good price in glass jars, or even in 5 gallon pails!  Start out with a couple of quarts of good organic stuff-

Put a tablespoon or so in your coffee each morning for Paleo coffee- top it with whipped cream, cinnamon and cloves, and you will be so satisfied and happy- and, very healthy as well- YOU will become a happy animal yourself.  Then, after you take your morning shower (and this is after doing your Perfectly Paleo Exercise in front of the TV) , take a butter knife and cut out a spoonful sized chunk of that coconut oil and rub it until its liquid in your hands- then, just rub it into your entire body, like the wondrous lotion that it is- you are a like an ancient Greek warrior, anointing his body with olive oil after the gymnasium training and cleansing- only you have an even better natural oil to work with- coconut!  Poor Alexander- no coconut trees in Greece or Macedonia!

Coconut is the best lubricant you can put on your skin- better than the “beauty creams” sold for hundreds of dollars- it’s quite  inexpensive, feels great, and promotes great skin AND interior health, as it’s medium chain triglycerides go right into the body through the skin!  “Leaky Skin”, in a good way!  You know, if you smear those petrochemical lotions on your skin, those CHEMICALS leach inside your body as well.  Don’t put anything on your skin that you would not put in your mouth...

Speaking of which, when showering, I highly recommend taking another spoonful of coconut oil and “swishing” it around your mouth whilst you shower- this “oil pulling” smothers bacteria in the mouth, and is probably the best single thing you can do for oral health, besides just eating a non-toxic, no plaque creating paleo diet!  Just be sure to spit the oil our after this, since it has accumulated all the toxins in your mouth- spit them out in the toilet, and flush them away- hurray!

Lastly, shave after you have put the coconut oil on your face (and ladies- your legs would benefit here as well!)   A layer or coconut oil will give you a closer shave than anything else there is!  

Again, for the ladies- there is NOTHING that will make your hair shinier and smoother than a small amount of coconut oil- 
And now, exercised and glowing smooth shaved and anointed with oil, the Cave Warrior (YOU!) is ready to go outside and enjoy the sun- AND, the coconut oil serves as a sunscreen as well!  But one which also lets in the beneficial rays of the sun, and is chemical free...

PaleoJay Podcast 25- PaleoJay turns 61!

Yes, today is the day that I, the not-so-famous PaleoJay turned 61 years of age.  Not a big deal to me really, but my family and friends were very nice to me, which I appreciate!  My daughter Holly and her fiance Brandon made me some Paleo chocolate coconut bars- I think I’ll have to get the recipe to put on the website to share!  Very, very tasty...

The thing is, after you start eating Paleo, and pretty much put sugar out of your life, sweet things all start to taste-  way too sweet!  So, one was all I wanted...  The thing about turning another year on your personal odometer is that it makes you think more about making yourself last, like a well maintained classic vehicle.  If you are into old vehicles, like I am, you know that, if well kept up- oil changed and other fluids changed, scheduled maintenance done frequently and correctly, and actually over maintaining your vehicle in some ways... it will last virtually forever!  And, a well maintained old vehicle is actually much cooler and more remarkable than a well maintained modern one- so much rarer that it is almost startling!

This is what I think we want to do with our own bodies, minds and spirits, which are living vessels given us by God and nature to cherish and do the most we can with.  To ignore, poorly maintain, or otherwise degrade our precious bodies is a travesty- the problem is, we have been given the wrong information for the past 50 years or so on just HOW to maintain and improve our health!

That last is no exaggeration- Iatrogenesis is the technical term for “Death by Doctor”, which is now- get ready- the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States!    First is heart disease, next is Cancer...

This is death caused not only by bad surgeries or leaving things inside the patient after operations, but also simply by the many common drug side effects, that are actually expected to occur in a portion of patients that are prescribed pharmaceutical medications, even when taken correctly.  It also includes the many infections that are contracted within medical facilities, which are infected with many “super strains” of antibiotic resistant bacteria that we really can’t kill with more drugs- they have “evolved” to withstand our drugs, since we have overused them in the past, both in overprescribed medicines for conditions they aren’t needed for (viruses), and because we pump our confined, corn fed cattle so full of antibiotics to keep them alive long enough to slaughter, and then consume the drugs ourselves in the meat they provide!  So, to maintain yourself properly long-term:

PaleoJay rule #1- Stay out of the hospital!  I would add, for the most part stay away from the Doctor’s office!  The medical INDUSTRY is pretty darn corrupt these days- they treat disease, and so they do NOT concentrate on HEALTH- the best business model for this particular industry is to keep people SICK, but alive, so they can keep consuming the many DRUGS they are selling, and pay for the many SCREENINGS and TESTS that run into thousands of dollars, and then the OPERATIONS that run into many thousands more... Great business model- Horrible health model!
Forget the Germ theory- “kill all germs!  They are the enemy! “

 Instead, concentrate on the Terrain theory, which is to make your body so healthy that bad bugs can’t harm you.  This was the theory that ran against Louis Pasteur’s theory of KILLING all the bad bacteria- Antoine Bechamp was the champion of this theory, running against Pasteur, and long term, it appears he was right!

PaleoJay rule #2- Eat like a human animal!

Every animal under the sun has its own perfect diet.  Cows and other ruminants eat grass.  Cats and dogs eat meat.  Only Birds can thrive on grains- but they also love bugs, worms, you know the drill about the early bird...Humans basically have the short digestive system of carnivores, but can, like pigs, be pretty omniverous if we NEED TO- this is not ideal for health however.  We are talking bare survival, short term here.

Just like cattle CAN subsist on grains like corn, (and candy in wrappers, and on other COWS! (read: origin of mad cow disease!)- they can only do so in a vastly unhealthy, sick state for short periods, and even then couldn’t do so without huge injections of antibiotic drugs.

Back to humans: we need a diet of LOTS of green vegetables, some fruits, plenty of grass fed beef, seafood, pastured pork, fermented dairy from raw milk- really, common sense will tell you what you really need to eat, since your great grandparents aren’t alive to tell you...  We do NOT need ANYTHING that is advertised on television!  That last is a good rule of thumb for what to NEVER EAT.  Never eat fast food. Never eat grains- our modern “altered” wheat is not the wheat of olden days, and even that wheat wasn’t that great- it was “poor food”- what people ate when they could NOT procure meat, cheese, and fresh veggies.   So, eat like a real human!

PaleoJay rule #3- Movement is Life!

There are so many people now that sit all day long at their desks, drive to and from work and fast food lunch and home, and then sit in front of their televisions and computers... and that’s it!  They are the functional equivalents of Multiple Sclerosis patients, or voluntary cripples.  We’ve all hear the axiom “use it or lose it”, and that is so true.  We need to MOVE- just walk, preferably WITHOUT SHOES, around the house, around the yard.  Without shoes is the way we are meant to move- our feet are very complex, and without the stimulus of reacting with the ground without heavy pieces of leather and rubber cradling and insulating them, they... deteriorate!  They weaken, just like an arm in a cast!  So, ditch the shoes, and just... walk around!  The movement is “baked into” our very DNA- it works our blood circulation, it works our lymph system (which is our waste disposal system), and it just plain MAKES US FEEL HUMAN and GOOD!  HUMANS MOVE!

And I am not talking crazy cardio- running marathons or jogging, which just destroys your joints, and teaches your body to be slow and to rely on sugar for fuel...

And I am not talking super heavy weight lifting, which also destroys your joints, compresses your spine, and inspires unnatural bulk, particularly in the butt...

I mean walking (barefoot preferably), self-resisted exercises and calisthenics, occasionally barefoot sprinting or bike riding, virtual resistance and isometrics ala Perfectly Paleo Exercise-

PaleoJay rule #4- Have a Great Tribe!

By “tribe”, in the modern sense I mean Family- Neighbors-Church.  All are very, very important.  We humans are very social animals, and to neglect that aspect is so detrimental to our mental, spiritual, and also physical health!  This means interacting, on a face-to-face basis, with our “tribal” members on a regular, fulfilling basis.  This means treating all humans you interact with as potential tribe members- I mean, even Andy Griffith had Otis sleep in his jail each night!  We are all God’s children. (Thanks to my Mom for that quote!)

PaleoJay rule #5- Sleep! (and Meditate!)

This rule, although listed last, perhaps should be listed first!  We are living in such a fast-paced, hectic, and sleep deprived culture that it is destroying our health, especially our MENTAL health!  Just try sleeping for 8 hours- go to bed really early, like at 8:30 PM- get in touch with your natural circadian rhythms- get up at 5:30 or even 6...


Eat a good, Paleo breakfast.  REPEAT.

THIS WAY LIES HEALTH!  Of mind, body, and spirit!

Go out and have a great life!  Not only for YOU, but for all of those around you!

Skip Supper to burn Fat and be Happy!

I know, it sounds crazy- SKIP SUPPER?  How is that supposed to make me happy and healthy?  Well trust me, your faithful PaleoJay- it will!

The Paleo waves are filled with the latest fad- Intermittant fasting!  It will simplify your life, put you into a ketogenic (fat burning) state, and flood your mind with the ketone bodies it craves...  and you know what?  It will!

But, virtually everywhere I hear and read, you are told to SKIP BREAKFAST.  That’ll work, but hey-  if you’re a Workin’ Man like Me, I mean PHYSICAL work, well, that won’t, uh, WORK!

We actual real honest to God WORKERS have to get up, eat a solid whack of protein and (hopefully!) a large, GREEN vegetable laced Paleo Smoothie to energize us, and load our cells with a large dose of nutrient DENSE nutrition!  This is ideal...

Then, we can attack our day- go out and WORK (Thank God I’m a Workin’ Man!), while the ivory tower bureaucrats and managers can sit on their chairs and Micro-Manage all of the REAL workers that actually produce and serve and keep this country working...

Sorry, but I had to throw that rant in- I believe our country is on a downward slide, both nutritionally and politically, and I had to throw that in!

Back to the Paleo Point- Eat a SOLID breakfast!  Include Bulletproof or, as I call it- Paleo Coffee (laced with coconut oil and real whipped cream, topped with cinnamon and cloves)... that, along with your Paleo Smoothie, 3 or 4 eggs, perhaps (as I had this very morning!) grass fed beef liver topped with hollandaise sauce!!!!  Trust me,  you won’t be hungry at ALL until mid afternoon or so!

Sip some more Paleo Smoothie from Mason jars you’ve packed in your lunch mid-morning if you want... but, when the WORKIN’ MAN is finally ready for lunch- Go to town!  Today I had grass fed beef, mushrooms and pepper slices, heated in a (gasp!) microwave oven, and a cup or so of cottage cheese.  I was very full indeed!  Happy, if you will...

Then, after the WORKIN MAN was done working, I went home and: I was so full and happy that I realized I didn’t need to EAT until tomorrow!!  What a liberation!

No preparation!  No cleanup!!  An extra hour before bedtime, and an early bedtime is virtually GUARANTEED!!   In fact, since Easter Sunday is coming up, I KNEW I wouldn’t have time for this podcast unless I did it now, on Good Friday!  I had a wonderful, relaxed, liberated, and fully satiated evening, and I am still having it.

So, bottom line, what I am saying is that I think that for most real, actual, WORKING folks, skipping breakfast, except on SUNDAY (that is my Fasting/Relaxing Sunday!), is not ideal.  Instead- SKIP SUPPER!

It gives you a few hours to do what you need to do, spend time with family, play guitar on the porch, talk with the neighbors- you know- all the things that make life worth living!

Then, go to bed, EARLY.  Get up, stretch a bit, and do your Perfectly Paleo Exercises, enjoying every moment- (This should be the best part of your day!)  Shower!  Put coconut oil on your body, rinse out your mouth with it as well!  SHAVE with coconut oil- it will be the CLOSEST shave you’ve ever had- revel in the fact that the oil is going into your bloodstream directly from your skin...

Then, make your Paleo Smoothie, prepare your eggs, grill your liver and top it with hollandaise sauce, perhaps...

You are going to have a really, really GREAT DAY!  I GUARANTEE IT!!

Enough sleep- Enough GREAT nutrients- an ENERGIZING, non- depleting (read: weight lifting/cardio) workout- YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A GREAT, GREAT DAY!!
