Fasting for Fat Loss and More

New website by PaleoJay- JayWalkJayTalk.com

One rather simple and easy method for both controlling your weight and also vastly increasing your health simultaneously is with fasting! Simply by limiting your eating window to a set amount of hours per day- say 6 am to 6 pm, you will eat less, without really consciously trying.
Before Fasting

If you then eliminate snacks, & go to just three meals in that allotted time span, that is another step forward! From there, you can gradually “up the ante” by further compressing that eating window.

You can either eat from 8 am to 6 pm, for a 10 hr window, or skip breakfast, & only eat from 11am to 6pm, with a 7 hour window. You can do this gradually, & it seems very natural- not a hardship at all really.

After Fasting
What really seems like a hardship to me is the conventional thought, which recommends 6 meals per day (constant grazing) with endless snacks- talk about unnatural! For the vast majority of our evolutionary past, being without food was the norm. It is what our bodies expect as a general rule, and it is what we thrive on.

Cancer cells , for instance, thrive on food- particularly Bad Food like processed carbs ((which break down into sugar), and and any form of sugar itself. Sugar feeds cancer- it is what cancer thrives on. Protein does not feed cancer, unless you eat way too much, & then the body stores the excess as carbohydrates. And FAT is useless to cancer cells, but quite good for you, if it's real fat from coconut, pastured dairy or wild caught seafood, or grass fed meat and eggs.

In addition, as you eat less often, and stick to these satiating paleo types of foods, not only will you not be constantly hungry as you are on a diet of carbs and sugars, you will be freed of the constant urge to “feed”! That is very liberating indeed.

One last thing- did you know that now in California and in Europe, cancer has superseded heart disease as the #1 killer? This carb-heavy sort of a bad diet is presumably to blame, as is too frequent eating.

The wonderful side effect of fasting or intermittent fasting as this is more properly termed, is autophagy, which can only occur in a fasted state. When freed of having to constantly digest food, the body is freed to “clean house”- scavenging to consume damaged and precancerous cells. This alone, along with a slimmer waistline, is worth fasting for.
And later, if you want to lose more weight- just compress your eating window more and more. It is even fine to skip a whole day of eating- it won't hurt you, and can only help you.

Lair of the Wolf by Simon Stanton audio book reading of chapters 1 and 2

Today, we start the book Lair of the Wolf, the second in the "A Barbarian in Chicago" series.  Wulf has escaped to his tribal homeland from decadent Chicago, and the police and the army are coming to "extract" him for punishment. Lair of the Wolf

Just do it- try everything Paleo!

I’m sorry to be so corny about my subject this week, but lately I’ve come to think that this kind of sums up the whole “life” thing.  I mean, it is so wonderful to have the knowledge and ability to control our own health!  It would have been inconceivable just a few years ago when we all thought that the government and medical clinics knew it all, and if we just relied on them, as we relied on mechanics to keep our cars going, we would be healthy and happy forever!  For a price.

And now, we have the Paleo diet and lifestyle, with all the research and the incredible wealth of scientific papers and books that back up the amazing effectiveness of just cleaning up our diets, as opposed to medicating ourselves to death.  The power really is within us to regain and enhance our health and fitness.  Not in the hands of far-off doctors and clinics and government agencies that will “save us”!

And so, all should be well and good- we know what to eat: real foods, pastured and natural meats and eggs, vegetables and fruits free of chemical pesticides, grass fed dairy, coconut oil and some sweet and white potatoes.

And we know what not to eat: grains, especially wheat rye and barley, anything GMO, processed and “low fat” foods of any type, fast food and especially SUGAR.

And then, there are all the incredibly intuitive things that our great grandparents knew and we are just now rediscovering to be crucial:

1.Good Family and “tribal” relationships between friends and family
2.Solid sleep each night, at least 8 hours, in a totally dark room
3.Daily or near daily contact with Nature, immersed in a forest, or at least spending time in a park
4.Physical exercise on a regular, every day basis, including some form of strength and resistance training, lots of ground based sitting, squatting,  and stretching.
5.Regular quiet moments of reflection and inwardness, either through religion and prayer, and/or via meditation.

Of course, clean air and water are also crucial, but we all have to do there just the best that we can.  For me, these two things alone are worth relocating to a more rural environment, but not everyone has that option.  Just do the best you can, and try not to live in or near a really large, polluted city.  But, if you can’t fix this, don’t worry about it for now.  Just concentrate on the five points I just listed.

I really think those are the BIG BULLET POINTS OF PALEO!  There are lots of refinements and tweaks that can be explored, and I do that here on a weekly basis, and in my own life.  You should too!  Make “being healthy” one of your hobbies.

BUT, those five points, along with the guidance of what to eat, and not to eat- that is the key!

Why do so many either not start changing their lives to comply with these simple guidelines, or else do it for awhile, maybe a month or longer, and then stop and go back to their SAD American diet days?  Reversing all the undeniable good they did for themselves and their health?

Why do they decide to give up, and go back to eating cheese doodles and all the other sugary crap, and get back on the highway to headaches, heart attacks, autoimmune disease and body destroying pharmaceutical drugs along with endless surgeries??  Is eating fast food really worth that!!??

Looked at logically, of course it isn’t.  But, unfortunately, most Paleo adopters do “fall off the wagon”, with some hardly even getting on, or else just subjectively “choosing” those more painless parts of it, and then claiming that the rest are “unimportant” at least to them, because they are immune and special.

I am saddened by these choices.  I know just how beneficial a paleo type of diet can truly be, how liberating, how self-enhancing of mind and body!  So, I am glad to say that Robb Wolfe is writing a book on the subject, called Wired to Eat, which is almost completed.  Here is the link: http://robbwolf.com/2016/12/07/wired-to-eat-coming-soon/

You can read about it there, but in essence he is speaking about how our biology is working against us in this matter of health, since our paleolithic ancestors (and us!) are hard-wired to want to:

1. Eat as many calories as possible, especially “sweet” ones that maximize body fat storage
2. Move as little as possible, so as to no jeopardize those precious fat stores

This is our body speaking to us, and it explains why we are so reluctant to do what is the best for ourselves in this current NON-PALEO world we live in, where calories are everywhere, and to work, strive, and move are actually optional.  This sets us up for having our biology work against us!

It sounds like Robb’s book may really help a lot of folks to get around all of this.  Some of us just manage to “rebrainwash” ourselves through podcasts, books, and the internet research to follow through with our diet and lifestyle.  Most don’t.

If you are one of those who started the Paleo Lifestyle and then later thought “the hell with it”….

It sounds as if this book is for you!

Liberals on Paleo Nutrition

Now that we all have the election of Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in our rear view mirrors, we can take stock of that outcome.  I think it is important to view the election through examination of a subject with which we are very familiar: that of nutrition and health.

If you are in agreement with the paleo precepts, such as those of eating a real foods, no gluten, and indeed lowish carb and grain type of diet, well then- you are in disagreement with the big Federal Agencies!  You know the food pyramid, now “My Plate”, that says to eat lots and lots of whole grains, low fat, lots of things like vegetable oil (or, more accurately industrial seed oils, and to eat little meat and seafood…

Well, if you believe this crap, like Big Government still does (they have strong commercial interests in doing so!), why then you are a Big Government Democrat, like Hillary Clinton and her ilk.  There are lots of reasons for pushing this incorrect world view:

It puts Government in charge of deciding what we should eat!

It puts the Department of Agriculture in a great position to help sell American Grain worldwide!  This helps big, agriculturally subsidized corporate farmers to dominate, and puts small family farms out of business!  It also helps big corporations like Monsanto to dominate agriculture worldwide with GMO, patented seeds, for which they own the rights, and from which you have to buy!

It keeps us all FAT and SICK, which helps Big Pharmaceuticals to sell their products, worldwide.  Think about it: it is in Big Pharma’s business interest to keep us all alive… but sick, so we have to keep buying their expensive drugs, month after month, year after year.  It is in their best interest to keep us addicted to their drugs.  Great Business Model!

The Medical Dogma can reassert, year after year, that we should all move more and eat less.  This, despite the fact that since the 1970’s, everyone has gotten fatter and fatter, sicker and sicker, year after year.

This point of view, if you share it, is the view of DEMOCRATIC LIBERALS.

NOW, let’s look at small government, traditional Republicans on nutrition:

We should have an agrarian republic!  “Agrarian republicanism" is a political philosophy that stresses the idea that a country populated by free citizens involved in agriculture is the freest, most equal type of society. This idea was advanced most prominently by Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States of America.

This is diametrically opposed to the Big Government Federalism of the Democrats!  Paleo people believe that small, locally owned farms and ranches are fundamental not only to freedom, but to a natural, evolutionarily correct diet for us all.  In fact, we should try to grow as much of our own food in gardens ourselves as we can.  Even our lawn weeds, if we stay away from toxic chemicals like glyphosate, are incredibly nutritious.

We should all KEEP OURSELVES FIT AND HEALTHY, NOT RELYING ON GOVERNMENT OR MEDICAL TREATMENTS, CLINICS AND DRUGS!  All of these are meant to be a last resort, not a normal occurrence.  Medicine cannot really do very much for us at all, since it only treats symptoms, not the underlying disease itself.

ALL of the processed, and fast foods that smother us in this country and now the whole westernized world, should be avoided completely.  GMO’s are poison, and should be regarded as such.

Self reliance.  Local government and autonomy.  Small government above big.  Republican versus Democrat.  It really is that simple!  The Democratic party, the same party that once propped up the KKK, the party of racism, has “marketed” themselves into a party that promotes BIG GOVERNMENT SOLUTIONS TO EVERYTHING!  And, not unsurprisingly, none of their solutions have even come close to working.  Their solution?  MORE OF THE SAME!

This is why the election went as it did.  Republicans have never changed, although they did have a crisis of faith.  They are the party that freed the slaves, the party of the upper midwest.  Wisconsin, actually- the party of Abraham Lincoln.  They have been vilified for the self interest of the Democrats, and the ignorance of voters, many of them corrupted by social programs like welfare, food stamps, and a plethora of others that continually multiply to our detriment as a nation.

It’s time to have small town Main Streets run our country again.  And the small farms that surround those Main Streets!  With small, local control, our towns, our states, our country, and most importantly of all our small farms and ranches can give us back our health, our autonomy, and the control of our own nation!

Bottom line on the election- why Hillary and the Democrats lost in a huge way?

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.
-Abraham Lincoln

You Gotta Cook!

This seems like a kind of crazy title for a podcast, but I really started thinking about this today: Most Americans no longer cook!  They buy fast food, they buy processed food to heat up, they order pizzas galore, and they go out to restaurants…  But they rarely ever actually cook a meal!

I know, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and most people (I hope, at least!) still cook a traditional dinner.  My daughter and son-in-law cooked a great one- all of the traditional turkey and stuffing, cranberries, and the guests like us and our in-law and fellow grandparents all brought side dishes.  The stuffing was gluten free, made of cauliflower and other veggies, as was the gravy.  It was fantastic!

Actually, the traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner is quite paleo, including mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes, salads, and all the rest… you just need to use actual, real-food ingredients like they used in any time before the 1970’s— real pastured butter and sour cream, real non-GMO vegetables, a pastured turkey, and real olive oil dressings instead of soy-ole-nightmare crap!  Easy Peasy.

But that is just one day out of the year.  The other 364 days, you are going to work, bringing a lunch of sandwiches and/or ding dongs, chips, or going to Burger King… then, coming home and ordering a pizza?  Hopefully, it’s not that bad- you are a paleoista, after all!  Let’s say you make a good breakfast of bacon and eggs, or just eggs- maybe with steak? (my favorite)

Or, you skip breakfast and just work out instead, and sip a green smoothie later at work, say about 10 AM!  This is an ideal scenario, so let’s keep going: You take lunch, and open a tin of sardines, or else dig in to your home-packed salad, topped with tuna or other type of protein, and lathered in your home-made dressing of olive oil and apple cider vinegar.  You are doing great!

Then, you come home, go for a heavy hands walk around the neighborhood with little 6 pound weights for 10-15 minutes, and then fire up your Weber grill to produce a slab of wonderful ribs, along with a baked potato, slathered with pastured butter and sour cream.

What a perfect Paleo Day you have had!  You feel great, energized really, not bogged down with excessive processed carbs as are most Americans.  You relaxed by the grill earlier, and meditated as you sat grill side, enjoying the aroma of the ribs slowly releasing their delicious essence under the influence of red-hot hardwood charcoal.

You feel so good that you and your wife take a stroll around the neighborhood after dinner, waving at your neighbors, who come out to visit and catch up.  Your perfectly trained dog walks with you, not straining against a leash at all, having been conditioned to want to please you through daily training.  Just as you train yourself, and your children, a responsible Paleoista such as yourself trained your dog!  This is the ideal paleo day- sound good?

Of course it does!  And it is not only do-able, it is the most natural way for humans to live.  The bottom line is this: on this day you took responsibility to provide yourself with home-cooked and prepared foods, as nature and evolution intended you to.  You lived in harmony with your biological nature, and did not insult yourself with micro-biome destroying processed and fast foods.  You did not rush from thing to thing, instead relishing nature and your surroundings, the people of your neighborhood/tribe!  You exercised, and you meditated on your blessings!

Think of most of your acquaintances: they ate cereal for breakfast.  They did no exercise whatsoever, and their mobility and strength are woefully depleted after endless days of neglect.  They all had sandwiches, fast food, or other crap for lunch, and then heated up Lean Cuisine or some such monstrosity for supper…

And now, some have headaches, some are nursing back problems and other nagging medical worries; many are thinking that they need to make numerous medical appointments for their many afflictions, and this does not even address all of the drugs jammed into their medicine cabinets…

It’s your choice.  Cook your own, natural, real foods.  Exercise in accordance with your biology.  Meditate, and commune with nature and God.  Move your body through natural surroundings, and breathe clean air.  Stay away from medical Doctors and clinics as much as possible, and live a natural, clean life, with good “tribal” relations through church, family, and friends.

It’s really not hard- it’s just that corporate and government special interests have made it so easy to do the opposite! And so, short term you can “get by” being a sloth.

But I’m here to tell you- it is not worth it!  Go Paleo!!

Carb Questions

Like everything in Paleo land, we do things differently. It seems that the conventional, standard American diet does everything exactly the opposite of what they should be doing.

They eat wheat and grain, not only do they eat them, but seem to almost bathe in grain products, day and night! Doughnuts and cereal for breakfast, sandwiches at almost every meal, pizza and crackers- the list just goes on and on. Wheat is the worst, what with all of its anti-nutrients and propensity to compromise our guts.

But then, throw in all the other carbs everyone in America consumes, things like chips, and doodles, cakes and pies and french fries…we are swimming in a sea of carbs!
Now, I’m not totally anti-carb- far from it. Depending on your activity level and body fat levels, good carbs like sweet potatoes and white potatoes are wonderful additions to your diet. Especially if you load them up with pastured butter and real sour cream, also from pastured animals. Think of carbs like this as fuel for your perfectly paleo exercise, and also as a way to feed your millions of gut bugs in your micro biome. They need carbs, just not nearly as much as most folks nowadays consume!
But here is the key, the bottom line: Cluster your carbs into the later part of the day. That’s it! Have them with lunch and/or supper, not with breakfast. Once you eat carbs, or especially anything with sugar, such as fruit, your blood sugar goes sky high, and you need to produce insulin to bring the levels back down, and there you go on the sugar/insulin roller coaster, all day long.
So, every time you make the insulin, your blood sugar goes down, and you get hungry again. And again. And again! You find yourself eating all day long, and that is never good. And the solution, again?
Don’t eat carbs early in the day. Eggs and bacon, fine. Orange juice and donuts? The worst thing you can do. Have coffee with coconut oil and cream early on- this really fills you up, and does not spike your blood sugar at all. Work out in the morning it you can- I can attest that I really thrive on that. Then, mid-day or later, have a nice baked potato with your pork chop!
And you know what? Your energy will remain nice and steady throughout the day, and you will feel great, without those feelings of “up” and “down” as your blood sugar spikes and then plummets. You’ll probably turn out like me, since nowadays I do my main workout in the morning, and feel so good that I have another shorter one in the late afternoon! Sometimes I do heavy hands around my woodland paths, or walk with ski poles (leaning into them as I go for upper body resistance). But today, I think I will go down to my basement and do some gymnastic rings work…
Because I just feel so good, eating my carbs later in the day!

No, You are NOT Immune to Gluten! Podcast for Paleo Quick tip of the Day.

I have heard this time and again- “You know, I try to eat right- I even make your green smoothies and feel healthier for it. I exercise religiously. But I think this gluten thing doesn’t apply to me- I’m immune!”
Not true. If you have never been off of gluten, and I mean you’ve never really followed through and eliminated bread products, even in relatively small amounts, from your diet for at least a month or two, you have no idea how much better you can “look, feel, and perform”, to quote Robb Wolf.
You may think that because you are not overweight, reasonably well muscled and fit, why then why not continue eating your sandwiches, and pancakes, and occasional slice of pie or cake? Well, do you have any of these symptoms that may seem minor (at first!), that are almost certainly due to your gluten habit?
1. Joint pain
2. Either diarrhea and/or constipation
3. Depression or anxiety
4. Brain fog
5. Headaches or migraines
6. ADHD type behavior
7. Insomnia
8. Abdominal distress
9. Hemorrhoids
10. Chronic Fatigue
Any or any combination of these maladies are always improved and/or eliminated just be ditching the grains! Many folks can tolerate small amounts of corn products without problems, but by no means all. But wheat, rye, and barley? You need to eliminate them entirely! No exceptions!

If you don’t, all of these can mature into autoimmune diseases, and they don’t stop with just one either. And if you already have an autoimmune disease, you really need to stop with the gluten now. Because, sadly, the gluten will continue to compromise your gut, “punching holes” in your intestine, and accelerating the invasion of your body and even your mind by way of your opened up circulatory system.
Let’s say you have an autoimmune disease already. Continue with your current gluten consuming indulgences, and you can expect to add more, over time. The rule of thumb if you have an autoimmune disease, meaning one of the diseases that have no cure except to mask the symptoms somewhat with powerful drugs loaded with side-effects- is that every decade you will add another disease to the list!
And, if you add in pain-masking over the counter drugs like Ibuprofen, Tylenol, and even aspirin, you will have accelerated the invasion of your body by these diseases and uncomfortable maladies hugely, since they also “punch holes in your gut lining” in a huge, damaging way!
We all get sloppy with our health over time, and this is just a reminder- no one is immune. Gluten is a poison, whether you believe it or not, and it will gradually, if not kill you, make your life more and more uncomfortable, painful, and far less pleasant.

Sleep, Exercise, and Eat like a baby!

I am late with this weekly podcast of Paleo Quick Tip of the Day, which usually comes out on each and every Wednesday- but I have a good reason!  My wife and I have been caring for our 14 month old grandson and, although it was truly a joy to have him in the house and yard for four days and nights, it is also- a lot of work!

If you have a little one or more, you know what I am saying is true.  Little children take about all you can give them, and if you are doing a good job of nurturing,  just about all of your time as well.   The other demands of daily life just continue, and so to add in a baby is just lots of work and very tiring.

Now hopefully we all know just how important a good night’s sleep is in a paleo lifestyle!  It is right up there in importance with cutting gluten and grains, eating nutrient dense foods, and avoiding processed and fast foods- right up there at the top of the list.  So, if you have a baby to care for, I recommend your double down on your rest and sleep- when they sleep, you sleep.  I know, you need to do chores as well, but try to sleep more than you normally would- sleep like a baby, if you can, with LOTS of shut-eye.

Luckily, with Perfectly Paleo types of exercise, I could do virtual resistance exercises right alongside baby, as he played with his toys on the floor. I swear, as I flexed and pushed, he was doing the same thing, crawling and pulling himself up and dancing!  Paleo Exercise is much like that naturally practiced instinctively by babies.

Pushups and sit ups also are no problem, although the little guy gave me the curious eye as I did them!  I also could do all of my stretches on the floor, and my back bridging in the mornings with a little “audience” in the living room.  I also did a lot of “baby lifts”, which he enjoyed immensely!

Nutrition?  Baby even helped with that!  For instance, for breakfast we had pasture raised liver sausage and sweet potato.  (Babies like anything, and benefit just as much (or more) than we do from such nutrient dense foods!  Lunch was chicken and broccoli, and supper was ham and carrots and rice.  Of course, I had my green smoothie each and every day, and my little “mini-me” had a sippy cup of coconut milk.

We also had meals of steel cut oatmeal with raisins, cut up apple pieces, and melon slices.  My little grandson ate about as much as I did, which surprised me, since he is only 22 pounds!  (But, I suspect, not for long- his father is 6’ 6” tall…)

So, the moral of this story?  Rest, Exercise, and Nutrition- these are the three most important things for your health!  NOT statin drugs, depression drugs, flu shots, high blood pressure drugs, and all of the endless drugs and treatments you see advertised constantly on the television and in print!  Your own, God-given body, supplied with REN- Rest Exercise Nutrition- will outperform anything modern medicine has to offer.  BY FAR!!

If you don’t have a baby to care for?  Well- you are your OWN BABY- care for yourself as if you were a growing baby- give yourself the BEST rest, exercise, and nutrition that you can put together!  You will become the healthiest, leanest, fittest you that you could possibly be.  That is the ultimate reward.  And you know what?

You will sleep like a baby!

Final Installment of A Barbarian in Chicago, Part 6 audio reading

This is the final installment of A Barbarian in Chicago by Simon Stanton, read here around the paleo campfire.

For as we all know, heroic tales are paleo indeed, and nourish our minds and souls as they did in ages past, when heroic tales like The Odyssey, Beowulf, and The Tales of King Arthur inspired us all.

PJSC podcast A Barbarian in Chicago Part 5

Another tale about the paleo campfire- an audio reading of Simon Stanton's blockbuster new novel!
Part 5 today, and only one installment left.

Save Your Teeth on Paleo Quick Tip of the Day podcast

Most of us know by now how great the paleo type of diet and lifestyle is for your body- I mean, your fat stores shrink drastically as you become a “fat burner” as opposed to a “sugar burner”, and your health literally explodes as you provide your body with vital nutrients instead of harmful substances like processed foods, chemicals, and gluten.

Throw in a little exercise, good sleep, and harmonious tribal relationships with family and friends, and Mr. or Ms. Paleo is looking very healthy and happy indeed! I hope that this is you, and that you have most of your paleo routine figured out, and blended in with your everyday life.

But have you considered your dental health? Back in paleo times, the health of your mouth and teeth was pretty much a given, since the food available to you was so nutritious, and not harmful to your health, as is much of the stuff we label as food today. Even now, wild animals have excellent dental health, and I guarantee they don’t brush or floss.

Step one in modern dental health is to simply eat a paleo diet, leaving out semi-poisons like gluten containing bread, pasta, and sugar laden candy. This one step alone will improve your dental health to an amazing degree! And, of course, brushing your teeth is a wonderful idea, do it at least twice per day, especially just before bed. But, there are some things you should incorporate that you probably do not know about:
Flossing has been shown to be harmful. The floss actually has been shown to push bacteria into the bloodstream, where it can compromise the immune system. It is also rather easy to damage the gums and teeth with the floss- forget flossing!
Use an electric toothbrush, especially for that last nightly brushing. An electric brush is far more effective than manual brushing.
Don’t use conventional toothpastes. Most contain fluoride, which actually weakens tooth structure, and is toxic to boot. I mix baking soda with sea salt in a small jar, and use that. Sometimes I also mix in coconut oil, and turmeric powder- this is a very potent anti-inflammatory mixture, and very inexpensive.
And finally, do “oil pulling”. This is a timeless Aruvedic system of oral health that is probably the most important of all of my recommendations here, with the exception of eating a good paleo diet.
I keep a small jar of coconut oil in the bathroom. When I take my daily shower after my morning workout, I take a finger and dip out about a teaspoon worth of the oil and put it in my mouth. It immediately liquifies, and I begin swishing it around between my teeth and all around my mouth as I shower, and continue my morning routine.
After showering, I take another finger full of oil and, warming it between my palms, spread it over my face and body- the best moisturizer ever! I even shave using the oil. When I am done, I spit the coconut oil into the toilet (it would clog your sink pipes), and flush it away, along with the bacteria and toxins that is has leached out of my mouth.
The coconut oil actually smothers the bad bacteria like Streptococcus Mutans that causes decay and gum degeneration. So go ahead- make coconut oil a mainstay not only in your kitchen, but also in your bathroom!

Weighted Stretches

Stretching is vital for your health.  This is true whether you are an athlete or not- if you start to lose flexibility and strength in your back and shoulders, you will also lose mobility, and be cursed with pain!

This is your body scolding you for not taking care of it.  If you feel pain, you are either doing too much physically, like overtraining or training with too heavily, or else you are doing too little.  No matter which side you come down on, I know how you can fix it- by stretching.  But not just with static stretching, where you stretch and hold for time, although that is good as well.  You need weighted stretching.

And, it need not be time consuming, since I am talking about only two simple weighted stretches to “bullet proof” your body, and strengthen and stretch at the same time the two most commonly pain riddled sites of the human body- your back, and your shoulders.

So here goes- for the back, and I mean the entire back musculature that surrounds and supports the spine itself, you need the Jefferson Curl lift.  It is simple, and effective, but must be done carefully, meaning starting with extremely light weights!   To start, just use an empty barbell- that will be plenty.  You will never go heavy with this, ever!

You can stand on a platform, or box, or just a stack of weight plates so that when you bend all the way over with straight arms holding the barbell at arms length straight down, nothing touches the ground.  I work out in my basement, and can just stand on the bottom step of the stairs leading upstairs, but then this won’t work for most.

However you do it, just slowly bend down at the waist, and feel the backbone slowly extend, vertebrae by vertebrae.  At the bottom, hold for a complete stretch momentarily, and then come back up, the same slow, deliberate way.  10 reps is ample, and just one set will do it.  That one exercise will do more for your back than anything else I can think of, both for useful, protective strength, and flexibility at the same time.  Useful flexibility, since you will have strength building in every range of motion in your spine- static stretching does not have the strength component.
Nice variations on this shoulder dislocate video!

Then, for the shoulders, do the scapular dislocation exercise.  It sounds painful, but it’s not!  Take either a long dowel, rod, or exercise band or rope- hold it at both ends, wider than shoulder width at first, in front of your body.  Slowly lift upwards, at arms length, straight up and over the head towards the back, and then down as low as your arms can go behind your back.  At the bottom of the motion, your scapula will slowly “dislocate”.  Then, go back the other way, until arms are back in front- the scapula will relocate when you are half way up your back.

Kind of hard to describe, but I will put videos of both lifts at www.paleojay.com  Easy to understand when viewed visually!

To slowly progress on both lifts, just gradually add weight- light weights!  On the shoulder dislocate, don’t add weight for a long time, just work on mobility.  When you can, gradually move the hands in closer to shoulder width.  Eventually, after long practice, you can use a dowel with a very small weight on it, but this is very advanced.  This scapular control is what gymnasts use for straight arm strength, which is very different from the pushing and pulling strength in most forms of training.  And it is a very protective form of strength that most people do not have, and they pay the price in injury and pain.

But, now, you will not be one of them!

A Barbarian in Chicago part 4

A continuation of "A Barbarian in Chicago" , this time part 4, of heroic tales about a Paleo campfire.  Actually, a long audio recording that is two podcasts in one!  By Simon Stanton, who has graciously allowed us to reread his barbaric tale of modern decadence and heroic defiance.

I hope you enjoy it, and identify with its commentary upon current events!

No Heavy Lifting for Arnold!

When you talk about exercise in the usual paleo circles, ala crossfit etc., the mantra is to “lift heavy things!” The idea that you must lift heavy, meaning heavy weights on barbell back squats, deadlifts, and presses is a given.
Well, I am here to say that it is not necessary, and never has been. It is not the weight lifted that is important, it is the muscular contraction intensity that counts! This can be achieved very well with isometrics, for example, without moving a muscle at all under weight, and so perfectly safely.
For no matter what someone else tells you- lifting weights under heavy loads is extremely dangerous, and actually inevitably damaging to the joints, tendons and ligaments. For a testament from an expert, what does the now aged Arnold Schwarzenegger have to say about heavy back squats?
“ I always have done each body part three times a week, with the idea being to train six days a week. But when you average it out it ends up being five days a week. You know, there are weeks when you’re sick, or weeks when you travel.
Are there core exercises that you still do today?
Well, my favorite exercises I’m not able to do today, because of joint problems. For instance, the basic squat. I would love to be able to squat again, but in order to protect my knees I do mostly the Lifecycle and bicycling and the elliptical, but no more squats. The knees are like a tire. When the tires last up to 30,000 miles, you have to decide how you want to use them. Do you want to use them up in one year, or do you want to use them over a period of 10 years? It’s the same thing with joints. So, I decided 10 years ago, when I started to feel the wear and tear and was feeling pain in my joints, that now I should adjust my training and do more high reps with less resistance. Therefore I stay away from the squat, and I stay away from heavy bent over rows, but I do the heavier rowing on a Cybex machine and do the lighter exercises with free weights.”
So, that tells you right there: Arnold has damaged his body with heavy weights! And, he is one who knows how to do it right, and still- damage! Here is what he has to say about the heavy clean and press exercise:
What about for shoulders? You’ve had rotator cuff surgery.
“I used to love doing the clean and press, because you get the traps, the front deltoids, and the side. It’s really a fantastic exercise that I recommend to anyone who starts out weight training. I also liked to do the dumbbell press, but I can’t do either anymore. So now I just do my presses on a Smith machine, which is safer on my shoulders because it’s on a track. But I have to say, it’s so fantastic to see the development of all of these machines. It allows you to train around your injuries— you don’t have to stop training because of injuries anymore. These machines allow you to isolate your muscles without the risk of hurting yourself.”
Rotator cuff surgery?? This stuff is not paleo, folks! No One should be training in a manner that actually makes injury inevitable, even when doing the exercise perfectly.
Now, Arnold has had a wonderful career, and can be excused for giving his early heavy weight lifting background part of the credit. And luckily, he woke up in time (10 years ago), as he underwent surgeries and his body cried out in pain. (I’m sure it still does. Ronnie Coleman, an 8 times Mr. Olympia winner is now in a wheelchair (he is 52 year of age). Arnold won the title 6 times before retiring.

The point is that, either man could have built amazing physiques, cut and defined, with plenty of mass, perfectly safely and keeping their health intact, using Perfectly Paleo Exercise techniques. They might not have had quite the sheer bulk, but the bulk achieved with steroids and heavy weights has nothing to do with health, and actually has nothing to do with usable strength or aesthetics.
Using virtual resistance, creating the resistance by the power of the flex in self-resisting an exercise, coupled with blood-infusing pushups and situps, coupled with things like pull-ups and bodyweight squats, is more than enough for a perfect build and usable strength- without damage to your precious body.
So train naturally. Train for health, wellness, and a pleasing physique, not a bloated mass of bulk surrounding a bunch of injuries.
   Be more like this guy:
Charles Atlas: no weights physique!

Recovering From Injuries

Injury is inevitable, unfortunately. It is part of the human condition. If you train properly, using body weight, perfectly paleo types of exercise, you won’t become injured from that. UNLESS you overdo it, which can always happen.

Overuse is the number one cause of injuries- just look at me! A few weeks back I posted about being injured from an overuse injury, painting a barn of a garage for just too many hours, and inflaming the bursa in my shoulder. I also did other jobs that overworked that same joint, and the result has been a few weeks of rehab. I used the occasion to research what worked and what didn’t, so here we go my paleo friends!

First of all, remember that it is not the end of the world. If you work out each and every day as I do, (and as I recommend for all creatures that exist on this earth), it is really irksome to have one part of your body that just…hurts. But, you just work around it- you exercise other parts of your body, and only work the hurting part through a limited range of motion (if you can) that doesn’t hurt! Of course, sometimes you can’t work, say, one arm at all for awhile. Don’t sweat it- just rest it.

But, there are some other things that will help dramatically as well. Putting a cold pack on the injured part (in my case this time- my right shoulder) is great. To alternate that with a warm, moist pack is ideal- this promotes blood flow. I would alternate cold with hot- in the shower is one great place to easily do this. But what about later, as you relax in your easy chair?

A bag of frozen vegetables is great to rest on your shoulder for awhile, but you can also get a re-freezable cold pack inexpensively, some even have straps to attach them to your body part. But how to alternate with hot? I have the perfect, although somewhat embarrassing answer-

Get a disposable diaper! That’s right, you can get about 30 for a few dollars. (Luckily, I have a new grandson who could use the rest!) I just took off the cold pack, and moistened the diaper from the faucet. Then, I microwaved it for a minute… hot and moist- perfect! And it attaches easily to any part of your body!!

Just don’t forget, and answer the door with a diaper attached to your shoulder- very embarrassing.

But the best solution of all, besides gently stretching and alternating heat and cold??

DMSO, or Dimethyl sulfoxide, is almost a miracle. Anti-inflammatory, it penetrated the skin and goes right into the tissues beneath, immediately relieving pain. It’s not really a drug, it is a solvent byproduct of the paper industry that has been known of since the 1950’s. The fact that it cannot be patented pinpoints why the pharmaceutical companies are uninterested.

It can’t be patented. There is no big money to be made here! Sad but true…

It is also a potent source of sulphur, which is a substance that is wonderful for any musculoskeletal ache or pain. Think of sulphur-rich hot baths, that people go to to rejuvenate their bodies. DMSO is a hot springs bath on steroids, that you just rub onto your body!

Anyway, for arthritis, bursitis, and any ache, strain, or pain- it is a miracle! Cheap, too- it is one of the veterinarians’ main tools for treating animals, mainly race horses that have been injured. Remember: even though the FDA might say that the effects from DMSO are a “placebo”- well, placebos don’t work on horses, do they?

So, get yourself some DMSO- 70% concentration is best, I like it in a cream form for easy application. Under $20 for a miracle drug! Just like white willow bark, this is something you should always have in your medicine cabinet!

Paleo Quick Tip of the Day- Fasting for Fat Control- and Health

One rather simple and easy method for both controlling your weight and also vastly increasing your health simultaneously is with fasting! Simply by limiting your eating window to a set amount of hours per day- say 6 am to 6 pm, you will eat less, without really consciously trying.

In addition, as you eat less often, and stick to these satiating 1
paleo types of foods, not only will you not be constantly hungry as you are on a diet of carbs and sugars, you will be freed of the constant urge to “feed”!

That is very liberating indeed. One last thing- did you know that now in California and in Europe, cancer has superseded heart disease as the #1 killer? This bad diet is presumably to blame, as is too frequent eating.

Guns are Paleo! Paleo Quick Tip of the Day

Another rather inflammatory podcast from PaleoJay! Guns are Paleo?! Yes, they are; let me explain.

With all the national rhetoric about outlawing guns and the 2nd amendment, I have to violently disagree. Every time that guns are taken away, crime goes up dramatically. Look at Chicago, and actually any major city in the U.S.- they all have strict gun laws, and at the same time have out of control crime! So, the logic seems to be to make the gun laws even stricter, and then we will have even more out of control crime.

If I was a criminal, it would be my fondest hope to disarm everyone who I might victimize. Easy pickings, what could be better? I would also want everyone to be physically very weak, and unable to defend themselves in any way. I’d want them all to be sickly, and so easy to rob or kill that I would hardly have to try.

Let’s take the analogy further: if I was the federal government, and I wanted a compliant populace that just obeyed every dictate I made in my big, top-down, micromanaging state, I would also want everyone disarmed. Then, I would want them paying the very maximum in taxes, so they could not determine their own lives, but would be directed totally by us, the federal government bureaucrats.
In addition, I’d want everyone to be pretty sick, so I would make up lies about how whole grains are the best thing to eat, and fat and red meat are the worst. I’d even subsidize grain farmers with your tax money so that they could produce more and more of that poor food, at the expense of vegetable farmers. Then, grain would be so cheap that farmers could feed it to cattle, which would make the cattle sick and fat, just like the citizenry. And, when they ate this unnatural meat, they would get even sicker and fatter! Win Win for the government!

And just think of all the medical procedures and pharmaceutical drugs that would be needed with such a populace! All the new government, controlling programs we could set up under the guise of funding all of this unnatural, unneeded medicine. It would be unneeded, if only people ate and lived a paleo type of lifestyle.

Big Government is diametrically opposed to paleo! Paleo is small scale, locally and tribally based.
Take care of yourself, and those in your “tribe” of family and friends. If you are weak, and without weapons, you are a liability to your tribe- a burden. If you are strong, hard working and vital, you can not only help yourself, but also those others who you decide are worthy of help. Not those the government decides needs your help via taxation!

So, choose the side of strength and self-determination. Don’t ask an MD how you should live and eat, and don’t ask the government for God’s sake! Do your own research, look into the common sense paleolithic lifestyle that has stood humankind well for all of time. Eat real foods, exercise naturally, avoid processed crap, grains and sugar. Sleep 8 hours each night, and do real physical work, not just shuffle papers or stare at a computer screen by day, and a television screen by night. Walk barefoot in nature daily, and create things, whether music, or writing, or painting, or woodworking- we are creative beings, and are really only fulfilled and happy when we are making new things.

And, to protect and serve both your own family and others in your tribe, get yourself a gun or two. Weapons are paleo. GUNS are paleo. To go without a gun, you are setting yourself up for evolutionary extinction. It is wrongheaded, and irresponsible.

Aerobic Isometrics- Goes GREAT with Paleo Diet!

But, no one knows it!  (Except YOU!) and me, of course...

All right: the above is me in my farmhouse basement, doing an "aerobic isometric" dip exercise.  I made the dipping bars about 30 years ago, from pipe I bought from Menard's.  The cost was very minimal...

Anyway, that's not the point, really!  Dip stations are readily available- the problem is doing the dips!
Most people just can't do them!  They are demanding, just like chin-ups, and dips are especially demanding (and even somewhat dangerous for the untrained!) in the extreme low position.

The "aerobic isometric" version of the dip solves all of this!

By helping the "dip" just enough with the legs, the dip becomes:

1. As easy as you want, or need it to be
2. As safe as can be!
3. MORE productive than a standard dip, even for a trained athlete who has done them for years!

How can this be?  Easy:  the exercise is being done in a manner that invites and encourages loading of the musculature and joints through a full range of motion, slowly, without "momentum, i.e. heaving of the weight".  It also includes complete loading of the targeted muscles throughout-
all done with complete safety, and, given the duration of the set- maximum inroad to the musculature involved!

What this means, in a nutshell, is that aerobic/isometric exercises exhaust, and initiate strength gains in your muscles in a completely safe manner, in one of the most productive formats possible!

It's like "Paleo Exercise"!  Aerobic Isometrics are one of the easiest, safest, most productive exercises on the planet!

Here are a couple more "aerobic isometric" exercises for you to explore:

There are more, but they will be the subject of further posts...  For now, just experiment with:
Aerobic Isometrics!  Odd to the uninitiated, but very effective!
