PaleoJay's Smoothie Cafe podcast #106- If you don't eat Paleo, you're nutrient deficient!

pjsc 106  Unless you eat a Paleo diet you are nutrient deficient

I hope that title got your attention, because it’s true- if you eat any sort of S.A.D. standard American diet, or even any type of vegan, vegetarian, or even the so-called Mediterranean diet- you are deficient in vital nutrients!

You probably get too many calories, but very little in the way of actual, health sustaining and health building nutrients- the result is inevitably going to be

Constant hunger
Blood sugar spikes and dips
Feelings of brain fog, depression, and anxiety
Progressive extreme weakness as you age, inability to sleep
Obesity and skin problems
Eventual crippling disease

I really don’t mean to scare you, but if I do a little, that can only help to scare you into changing your diet and lifestyle!  It really isn’t that hard, especially for all of the rewards your health will enjoy, but there are are few things that are almost universal for modern Americans:

Leaky gut- this is the big one, and the hardest one.  You really must get away from grains, primarily wheat and its built in poison gluten.  This one thing, wheat, which is the most consumed food in the modern day, has been bred into a Frankenstein monster, and is by itself setting us up for all sorts of autoimmune diseases.  Get rid of wheat, and you are really more than half way there!  (Incidentally, this is the only real difference between the highly thought of Mediterranean diet and the paleo diet, since both modes of eating encourage real foods like butter and oils, lots of green plant foods, and lots of herbs and spices).  But, this is a really crucial difference!

Get some magnesium into your diet- magnesium deficiency is pandemic in these modern times.  The very best way is to start including green leafy vegetables into your diet in a big way!  The very best and most effective way to accomplish that is by buying a Vitamix blender, and making a green Paleo smoothie to drink daily- it doesn’t have to be big- I fill Ball 16 oz. canning jars, and fill about 5 from each smoothie blending canister!  Then, I just take out one each day, and enjoy it for breakfast, along with my eggs and bacon and coffee mixed with a little coconut oil and cream.  That one action will yield the most bang for the buck- go to www.paleojay.com and click on the Vitamix link, and you can order one direct from Vitamix with free shipping on me!  Get that magnesium back into your cells; here’s why:

Neurological:
Behavioral disturbances
Irritability and anxiety
Lethargy
Impaired memory and cognitive function
Anorexia or loss of appetite
Nausea and vomiting
Seizures
Muscular:
Weakness
Muscle spasms (tetany)
Tics
Muscle cramps
Hyperactive reflexes
Impaired muscle coordination (ataxia)
Tremors
Involuntary eye movements and vertigo
Difficulty swallowing
Metabolic:
Increased intracellular calcium
Hyperglycemia
Calcium deficiency
Potassium deficiency
Cardiovascular:
Irregular or rapid heartbeat
Coronary spasms
Among children:
Growth retardation or “failure to thrive”

CONDITIONS RELATED TO PROBLEMS OF MAGNESIUM
In addition to symptoms of overt hypomagnesemia (clinically low serum magnesium), the following conditions represent possible indicators of chronic latent magnesium deficiency
Depression
Chronic fatigue syndrome
ADHD
Epilepsy
Parkinson’s disease
Sleep problems
Migraine
Cluster headaches
Osteoporosis
Premenstrual syndrome
Chest pain (angina)
Cardiac arrhythmias
Coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis
Hypertension
Type II diabetes
Asthma

And clean up the rest of your diet- cut the sugar way, way back!  A few empty carbs are OK from time to time, like gluten free baked goods and gluten free pizza crust, but make it rare- they just turn to sugar with no nutrients attached! Try to eat nutrient dense foods- grass fed meats, wild caught seafoods, sweet potatoes and white potatoes (don’t eat the skin!  loaded with anti-nutrients!), and white rice in moderation.  Occasional corn chips appear to be fine for most active people, as does occasional popcorn topped with real pastured butter and sea salt!  But keep the carbs down; Americans have come to be carboholics, hence their incredible increase in girth and disease over the past 50 years or so.

One more option you may want to consider for magnesium (it is that important I keep coming back to it!) is ancient minerals

This is a concentrated form of magnesium, completely uncontaminated since it is drawn from dead sea sources well below the surface of the earth!  You can either rub it on your skin as a lotion or spray it on your skin, and it is absorbed into the body without having to pass through the digestive system- I have used it on people with all sorts of cramps and restless leg syndromes and it works like a charm!  A good way to “kick start” your magnesium up to normal levels while you change your diet to keep them up from day to day.

What else?  Glad you asked, grasshopper!

Get some exercise- park far away, and walk where you are going.  Stretch each morning, and do some Perfectly Paleo Exercise each day to get started!  Walk barefoot on the earth, get out into the sun, and rejuvenate yourself in nature as often as you can.  Your Vitamin D levels are the next most important thing to take care of!  So get out into the sunshine for at least 15 minutes each day, and a good supplement can help there as well.  Get a liquid vitamin D is the most efficient; just add a few drops to your green paleo smoothie!

So there it is- a simple recipe for total health and wellness!  It’s not that hard, it’s not complicated, and it is very, very effective!
