Paleo Quick Tip of the Day #51 How to stay Paleo


How to stay Paleo- eat a ton of veggies-All the rest is window dressing!

I know, this sounds like a vegan post, which I most definitely am not.  But, I stand by it.

If you start your day with a Paleo Green smoothie, loaded with veggies and fruits, pre and probiotics, lots of good fat and God made protein like free range eggs, your battle is more than half won- drink a couple of good sized glasses over the day, and you are already on track.

For one thing, you are quite full, and not vulnerable to be tempted by bad fake food.  For another “once begun- half done” - the old truism is very true.  Once you have started off on the right foot, it is much, much easier to continue- have a salad with some olive oil and vinegar, topped with meat and hard boiled eggs for lunch, some nuts mid-afternoon, and then (this is my ultimate deal sealer) grill a big juicy steak!  (I always try to grill bacon as well, which I can heat in the morning with a few eggs- yum!)

The point is to always have lots of really good foods on hand- ready to heat and eat, or just eat- then, temptation is easy to resist.

Another thing- even though I live in a pretty rural area (which I love!), even here we now have several places where we can get things like sushi, and Vietnamese spring rolls.  You can just pick them up, and you are set for a nutritious, paleolithic meal instantly!

A good outdoor grill is a wonderful Paleo tool!  I just got a new, Weber charcoal grill (charcoal is vastly superior to gas- use hardwood charcoal and you are in for wonderful foods).  My old grill is still functional; I set it back by our “tiny pub” in the woods out back for parties and gatherings... it was from the 1970’s, so your investment lasts a long, long time!

Anyway, once or twice a week I shop for meats and veggies, and load up that grill!  Then, after an hour or so enjoying myself out by the grill, I have good, God made Paleo food for days, just heat and eat.  Microwavable veggies are a perfect companion- I like to heat up butter at the same time as I do the veggies to top them off!  Sometimes I am happy to just heat up two boxes of veggies, with butter, and that is my meal!

I think a real problem that folks have with staying Paleo is when they try to go too low carb.  There definitely are advantages to going low carb, but low carb is not the same as no carb.  Especially if you have a spouse that isn’t really on board with the paleo diet, win them over by loading them up with LOTS of veggies (with butter and sea salt!), and also by having occasional sweet potato fries and loaded baked potatoes with sour cream, and even more butter! These “safe starches” will not hurt your health, especially if you work out they can even help you get healthier!

There is a place for really low carb; mostly for therapeutic uses as in the ketogenic diet- if you have an autoimmune disease, obesity, or conditions such as epilepsy, autism, alzheimer’s, chrone’s disease, or diabetes- then  a very, very low carb diet may be perfectly appropriate, even medicinal!

But for basically healthy, well folks: some safe starches will not impede your health, and may even enhance it!  Have some fried rice with that beef and broccoli- just keep it in moderation!

The last thing I’d do to keep on keepin’ paleo?

Listen to paleo podcasts.  PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe is one, and my other is Paleo Quick tip of the Day, both on iTunes and Stitcher.  But Robb Wolf’s the Paleo Solution is invaluable, as is Chris Kresser’s Revolution Health Radio.  Latest in Paleo is another, as is Superhuman Radio with Carl Lenore... the advantage of listening to podcasts is that they reinforce, in a very personal, just me-to-you kind of informality, just what you are trying to do, why you are trying to do it, and just how really important it is to you in your life.

Oh- wait- one more thing!

STAY AWAY FROM MEDICAL DOCTORS, AND THEIR
RECOMMENDATIONS!


This last is super important- medical clinics, hospitals, and the American Medical Association (along with their “trainers”- the pharmaceutical drug manufacturers, the FDA, and Monsanto itself) are totally invested in selling you as much bad, man engineered fake foods that destroy your health, and then selling you as many drugs as they can that mask the symptoms of your ruined health.

This is no illusion- follow the dollars!   There is so much money to be made if people are lured into eating processed foods in the selling of the foods that cause disease....

But there is even MORE money in selling the drugs to treat the diseases they cause!

Medical Doctors have pretty much been turned into drug pushers.  And most commercials on TV are also drug pusher commercials!!

So- one more thing- avoid commercial TV!!

And it goes without saying: avoid drugs!  Legal, illegal, it doesn’t matter- and you know what?  Illegal drugs are probably less harmful!!

Paleo Quick Tip of the Day #50 A New Year a New You!

I think it is a given that young children, whose bodies and minds are developing, should be given the most nutrient dense, the most very nutritionally supportive foods that we can!  Traditionally, pregnant mothers have been known to require the very best nutrition, rest, and the purest environment possible to ensure a healthy, undamaged fetus and then BABY.

To me, this is kind of a “DUH” moment; but, it’s beginning to appear that I am, if not alone, at least in the minority in modern day America with such thoughts-

I, for one, (although I know that the Department of Agriculture, the Food Pyramid/My Plate, and the Dieticians have all been co-opted into supporting grain subsidies and the selling of big Ag’s GMO grains above all!)- Even I was utterly horrified and ashamed of what it has come to; what we are feeding our kids!

Again, look at the photos on the site linked to above, and think to yourself:

What nutrition is in this crap?  How can kids develop normally, or even at a sub-normal level, consuming this junk??

Answer:  They can’t!

Obesity, diabetes, attention deficit disorder, autism.... the list goes on and on, and these diseases, that used to only strike old men are now taking down 9 and 10 year old children.

If you put sugar laden gasoline into a car, the engine will self-destruct-

So why do we put SUGAR LADEN FOODS into our very CHILDREN???

The results are identical.

Even more so in the case of living children, since they are in the process of building their bodies, their engines of life.  A car engine comes ready built, and is still destroyed by such ill treatment!

The science is out- Sugar is the poison, and real food and real fat is the savior!!

This is not even debatable any longer- the science is there, ready to be read...

But, most Doctors, who have basically NO knowledge of nutrition are not willing to change what they think they knew from what they heard in the 1970’s... as are most Dieticians....

AND, most importantly, most Governmental Bureaucrats!

But, I want YOU to know that yes, nutrition is vitally important for health and wellness, and looking good and feeling good, mentally and physically-

In fact- it is VITAL!

Grains turn to sugar, immediately in the human body!

Sugar is the direct cause of diabetes!!

So why is Diabetes Self Management telling us how to shop for grains???

This one photo says it all.  It’s all about money:

Money for the drug companies, that profit by keeping us sick, but (barely) alive.

Money for the medical clinics, that were trained by the drug companies, that profit by treating us for diseases that are easily treated by proper nutrition and lifestyle.

And money for the government, through taxes and payoffs by the big grain cartels, to keep the system running- growing huge fields of grains and especially GMO grains- putting small farmers out of business as much as possible since they are “wild cards” and might grow real, honest-to-God nutritious foods that might compete with the altered varieties that Monsanto comes up with- sending agents in Body Armor and with automatic weapons to pour out raw milk from Amish farmers as if it was drugs...

We have entered nutritional madness, and it is all about money!

Don’t fall victim to this mindset.  Take charge of you and your family’s health.

Eat real foods, meat, seafood, veggies, grass fed butter, grass fed beef, pastured pork, nuts and seeds.  Get what you can from LOCAL FARMS- THEY ARE THE BEST!
Local farmers care about what they produce; as you should about what you eat!  Let’s get back to basics- eat locally, and seasonally!

You don’t need processed crap from big ag and the big grain cartels.

Just remember- if Great Grandma didn’t recognize it as food, IT ISN’T!!

All of us need to be very cognizant of what we are doing, in this day and age about our own health, and that of our families!  It is a very strange time, in that we don’t even know anymore what we should eat- hint- real food- and we are inundated with bad dietary, lifestyle, and fitness ideas constantly.  In addition, we have received these utterly wrong messages about eating lots of whole grain products, vegetable oils instead of real, honest to God-made fats like coconut, pastured animal fat, and grass fed dairy products- constantly, many of us since birth!  If you were born after 1980, you have been taught a line of BULL for your entire life. Can you say Ta Tonka?

Only now, with the interest in the Paleo, Primal, Ancestral, Barbarian template for natural human living and eating, is the truth beginning to come out.  Thanks to the internet, and recent technologies like smartphones and computers, real science backed ideas, like that of evolutionary biology, can be widely disseminated and spread to anyone who takes an interest...

And that is what I want to mention to you, my favorite listener, today- If you are too busy, or just don’t want to, or cannot make your health a matter of top priority in your life, well then you need to find someone who can, and will help you in this vital matter!

Being truly fit and healthy is not something optional; without your health in balance nothing else in your life is worth anything.  Strong words, I know, but think about it:
Let’s say you have millions upon millions of dollars, but you are getting fatter year by year, you sleep badly, you have brain fog much of the time, you have lots of creeping ailments like severe headaches, stomach problems, acid reflux, high blood pressure, perhaps an autoimmune disease like arthritis... or maybe you have developed cancer or heart disease!  What good are your millions in the face of this deterioration of health?  Fixating on money is the goal of most modern Americans; I would suggest fixating on health first.

PaleoJay podcast #33- Paleo eating and exercise can keep you out of the nursing home! Really!!




One of the best ways to stay OUT of a nursing home as you age is to keep yourself healthy- duh, I know, it sounds obvious... but most folks have no idea how to achieve this!  It’s not about eating low fat, and keeping your weight down- it’s more about eating HIGH fat, all good fats like pastured butter and free range eggs, coconut oil and grass finished beef- it’s mostly about keeping your muscle mass UP!  

Exercise to increase and sustain muscle mass is not only extremely important as you age, it is utterly crucial.

I have been very involved with an elderly relative lately, and have seen what can happen when you just stay home and watch tv and read, and move less and less as you age... eventually, this person became unable to move hardly at all- needed a powered lift chair to stand, and eventually fell and broke first one hip, and then the other!

The startling thing was, though, how FAST the person gained strength after breaking the first hip, and being FORCED into actual physical therapy and strengthening exercise.  At first, he went to the old line “I’m really not motivated to walk around or exercise”... but he was informed that, if someone on Medicaid refuses to try to improve, they are OUT of the system, and have to pay cash for their care until they are destitute!

What a motivator!

Wouldn’t it be nice if our Welfare system was similarly set up with motivations that rewarded and punished the recipient appropriately to his behavior?

Anyway, within 3 weeks, our elder was walking again, going up stairs , and rising unassisted from his wheel chair!  I saw him doing high rep partial squats with his walker to support him- amazing improvement.  Unfortunately, he became over confident, and tried to go alone to the bathroom in the nursing home without his walker- perhaps he was also just disoriented in the night.  Regardless of the cause, he broke the other hip...

So now he is back in the nursing home with two replaced hips, and exercising daily.  He is now HIGHLY motivated to walk and exercise, realizing what it is to be confined to a bed and wheelchair, and totally dependent on others for everything... and I mean everything!

What does this mean to you?  If you are middle aged, say 40 or so (or even younger- the younger you are the easier it is to start)- 

Start exercising!  The very best form of exercise is virtual, or visualized resistance exercise, where you use your own body itself as the resistance that puts the muscles under tension.  Check out my eBook Perfectly Paleo Exercise for a good overview of that- also, body weight exercises are a great supplement and addition for total health and fitness.

Get adequate sleep!  Nothing too involved here, but it is absolutely crucial, as I say all too often...just make sure you have a dark bedroom, with no electronics in it, and above all- get to bed really, really early!  Enjoy it- it is so super important for your health both mental and physical.

WALK!  I don’t mean “cardio” here- I don’t mean “exercise” here- I just mean walk!  This is what humans do, what we have done, what we are meant to do, and NEED to do.  All the old adages apply:  park far away from the store- hike in the woods- take stairs not elevators- walk barefoot around your yard and at the beach, just WALK.  Keep moving- walking is not optional!

So there you go- don’t be like the very last generation, the WW2 generation, that by and large thought that physical comfort was the be all and end all- be more like all of the previous generations of human beings, who knew that staying active and healthy was not only necessary and desirable, it was our birthright and our joy!  

If you take an animal, say, a cat, and immobilize it; try to make it unable to move, to walk, to climb- that cat will go crazy with anxiety- animals know instinctively that immobility is death, and will do anything to avoid it-

GO THOU AND DO LIKEWISE!

Is Pork Bad?



I have heard lately, and from people I respect greatly, that pork is a dirty, unhealthy meat, and is best avoided!  It provoked thought, and I researched it ad nauseum...

While it is troubling that CAFO raising of pigs, (CAFO is "Confined Animal Feeding Operations", or basically Concentration Camps for pigs) is as unsanitary and unhealthy as it sounds, to extrapolate this to all pork is wrong-headed.

Especially if you obtain your pork from a pastured, old-style pig raising farm as I do; if the pigs your meat comes from were happy and healthy porkers, the chance for contamination is small.

If your pork, in addition, is cured (as in BACON), the chance of disease goes down...

AND, if you cook it well, meaning thoroughly (NOT rare!), the chance goes down to...

almost nil!

Track Your Activity, Nutrition, and Sleep all at ONCE- With Dan's Plan!


Since a picture says a thousand words, I thought I'd just start off with Dan's (of Dan's plan) info-graphic!    Here is Dan: he kind of looks like my own little brother, also named Dan!  


But, he has come up with a great way for you to track your health variables, i.e. how much you Eat, Move, and Sleep!

Believe it or not, those three little variables have more to do with your health than anything else- 

more important than all the drugs you have been prescribed??

Yes indeedy- WAY MORE!

High blood pressure: HI-Biscus TEA!


We’ve long known that almost all benefit from treating severe hypertension comes with lowering BP [blood pressure] just a little. On the other hand, efforts to lower BP to ‘normal,’ typically requiring multiple drugs, are not only usually unsuccessful but produce more harm than good, since adverse effects of intensive treatment outweigh the minimal marginal benefit of a little more BP ‘control.’ Drug treatment of mild hypertension….may be of great value to drug makers, but it was almost predictable that it would provide little or no benefit for patients.

Hey- do we have a problem here?  It appears that standard approaches to high blood pressure are misguided.

Suprise, suprise, suprise!!


The bottom line here is this:

MILD hypertension is best treated by natural means.  

As my friend Chris Kresser says:


"Treating mild high blood pressure with drugs is ineffective. Try potassium-rich foods, hibiscus tea, acupuncture and exercise instead."

How simple is that??

It doesn't generate a lot of revenue for the medical establishment, or the pharmaceutical companies...  

but it sure as HECK does work!

I would suggest, in light of the double blind research studies about Hibiscus Tea, that you ADD IT to you daily Paleo Smoothie if you have any high blood pressure issues!

What could be easier?

You substitute green or white tea (both excellent choices in and of themselves, by the way!), with Hibiscus Tea- available almost anywhere, readily!  (And delicious, as well!)

Of course, if you are already drinking the Paleo Smoothie!, you are already becoming super healthy just on the merits of this superdrink/food!

But, if you have a particular issue with high blood pressure-

It would behoove you to drink 

Hibiscus tea- either just replace the green/white tea in your smoothie, or add it into your beverage rotation!

It sure beats taking a DRUG!

What you really need to succeed in the Paleo diet!

This is what my daughter, Holly and I recommend for you for adopting the Paleo way of life:

Cut out the grains.  Wheat, rye, barley, corn... kind of in that order- the big one being wheat!  Ubiquitous wheat, read: sugar, results in insulin spiking, which means fast aging and fat storage.


Cut back hugely on sugar.  Processed foods are loaded with it.  Donuts, soft drinks, chips of all sorts, just say no.  Already your health is vastly improved!

Buy a Vitamix.  Blend up a Paleo Smoothie each morning for breakfast, and maybe for part of your lunch...  You are really getting about 2/3 of the way there to abundant health...

Lastly, get enough good, quality SLEEP!  This is really a huge determinant in health!

But NOW- 


You've done all of the above!  You are eating a Paleo-type of diet.  You have stopped the slow suicide of a S.A.D. (Standard American Diet), and have gone to eating real foods as God made them.  Processed "food" is in your past...

but you still have health issues??


I don't care if it is auto-immune disease, fat loss problems, or even depression- Chris Kresser is your man!

Paleo Continuing Education- the BEST Paleo Podcasts!


It is really important that you continue on your Paleo journey for your whole life!

Continuing to educate yourself is crucial to "keep on keeping on"!  

Even though you think you understand and have assimilated all of the paleo diet and way of life, trust me:

There is never enough learning!  Ever!  Not in any field of endeavor...

So...  listen to podcasts!  Here are some of the very best:
  1. The paleo solution  Robb Wolf is the best!  You can also just go to iTunes, and type in: The Paleo Solution
  2. The Livin' La Vida Low Carb podcast with Jimmy Moore- Jimmy's blog with umpteen links!

You can also, as above, just type in the name Jimmy Moore in iTunes- subscribe to ALL of his podcasts- there are more and more each day!!

      3. Latest in Paleo!  Angelo Copolla does a great job of digesting, and then broadcasting virtually ALL that has happened in Paleo in the past week.  NOT to be missed!

      4. Transform Your Health with Dr. Josh Axe  Dr. Axe is a great resource- though not strictly Paleo, he is at least 90%... and he has such an upbeat, engaging way that he is great to "reinforce" your paleo education long-term!

      5. Chris Kresser  You really don't want to miss this guy!
Probably the brightest guy around, Paleo nutrition-wise!  He makes you THINK! 
Not one to go "with the flow"...

     6. Underground Wellness  Sean Croxton is a great resource- "YOOHH"- quite the personality- but great info and depth as well!  Listen up!

     7.Everyday Paleo  Sarah Fragoso "and friends" will edify and delight you, as they talk about how to run a paleo kitchen in a house with KIDS!!  And they really do it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Especially if you have kids in the house- don't miss this podcast!!

There are others- heck, Superhuman Radio is great, although the commercials are ..... endless- thankfully podcasts can fast-forward!  Balanced Bites is another great source of continuing paleolithic nutrition ed.!
