All of us need to be very cognizant of what we are doing, in this day and age about our own health, and that of our families!  It is a very strange time, in that we don’t even know anymore what we should eat- hint- real food- and we are inundated with bad dietary, lifestyle, and fitness ideas constantly.  In addition, we have received these utterly wrong messages about eating lots of whole grain products, vegetable oils instead of real, honest to God-made fats like coconut, pastured animal fat, and grass fed dairy products- constantly, many of us since birth!  If you were born after 1980, you have been taught a line of BULL for your entire life. Can you say Ta Tonka?

Only now, with the interest in the Paleo, Primal, Ancestral, Barbarian template for natural human living and eating, is the truth beginning to come out.  Thanks to the internet, and recent technologies like smartphones and computers, real science backed ideas, like that of evolutionary biology, can be widely disseminated and spread to anyone who takes an interest...

And that is what I want to mention to you, my favorite listener, today- If you are too busy, or just don’t want to, or cannot make your health a matter of top priority in your life, well then you need to find someone who can, and will help you in this vital matter!

Being truly fit and healthy is not something optional; without your health in balance nothing else in your life is worth anything.  Strong words, I know, but think about it:
Let’s say you have millions upon millions of dollars, but you are getting fatter year by year, you sleep badly, you have brain fog much of the time, you have lots of creeping ailments like severe headaches, stomach problems, acid reflux, high blood pressure, perhaps an autoimmune disease like arthritis... or maybe you have developed cancer or heart disease!  What good are your millions in the face of this deterioration of health?  Fixating on money is the goal of most modern Americans; I would suggest fixating on health first.

Here is where a good health coach, someone who has really researched what real, honest to God health, Ancestral/Paleo type of real, natural, robust, non-drug propped up to keep you barely alive existence but real health really is!  Whew- what a mouthful-

Paleo Ice Cream!

AKA "bulletproof" ice cream, from bulletproof executive


Paleo Ice Cream

Ingredients
  • 4 whole eggs (pastured of course)
  • 4 yolks (in addition to the whole eggs above)
  • 2 tsp vanilla 
  • 1 gram vitamin C (ascorbic acid) or 10 drops apple cider vinegar or lime juice to taste.
  • 100 grams (7 tbs) grass-fed butter
  • 100 grams (7tbs) coconut oil
  • 50 grams (3tbs + 2tsp) MCT oil (important for consistency)
  • 80 grams (5.5tbs) xylitol or erythritol (or more to taste – you can add up to 160 grams if you want)
  • OR raw honey and/or stevia....
  • ice (just under 1/2 cup; add less than you think you need, then increase the amount).
Methods
  1. Blend everything but the water/ice in blender. It takes a while to get the butter blended into perfect creaminess.
  2. Add water or ice and blend some more until well blended. Ideally, you want a yogurt-like consistency for creamy ice cream, or add more water for a firmer, icier texture
  3. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and turn it on.
This will make perfect consistency ice cream. 


I mean, what could be better than a perfectly healthy ice cream??  Party down!!

I AM A MANGRATE!

Here is my Weber grill, warming up with the Mangrate!  Also, next to the Mangrate is a PaleoJayGrate, which is just some iron grill thing I had lying around...  Just the right size for smaller items, to keep them from "falling through" into the fire.  But I digress- the MANGRATE!  I really procrastinated on this, thinking as I do:

"Hey, this grill I inherited from my father-in-law, that is from the early 1970's, works just fine.  What do I need some new fangled do-dad fur...  "

But, this doodad is cast iron, thick and heavy- the real deal.  It will leave marks on your meat, particularly steaks and chops, but actually on everything- perfectly!  


I believe that grilling your meat and veggies is the most viscerally PALEO thing you can do.  It literally makes you feel you are a pioneer, a barbarian, and a hunter/gatherer all in one, supplying your tribe with vittles for a long spell! 


Anyway, the way I do it is this:

I start the coconut shell charcoal (this is key!).  This charcoal is the bomb!  

I start it with a torch!  

The beauty of the torch is that, not only do you start the charcoal within about 30 seconds or so...

but you also have the opportunity at the same time to clean the grill and the mangrate!

This makes a charcoal grill actually easier (it's already superior) to a gas grill...

Just start the  coals as depicted above with the torch, then put on the grill and the mangrate, and blast them with the torch til clean!

Now, your coconut charcoal is glowing hot, the grill and mangrate are "flame on!", and you, my friend, are ready to grill the best food you have ever chomped!
You will probably be the new hero of your tribe!!

So, what have I really accomplished here?  Well, the whole point is that you can easily and enjoyably spend a fun Sunday afternoon supplying your "tribe" with meat and vegetables!  You can easily prepare a week's worth of meat; just put it in your ready and waiting glass and tupperware type of containers, and you are set!  

Actually, eat the meat throughout the week, and drink your Paleo Smoothie, replete with vegetables and fruits for breakfast, and all, and I mean ALL of your nutritional needs will be met.

You know, eating Paleo and enjoying life are really not all that hard, considering...

Now we have grills, Vitamix blenders, and propane torches!  

(And computers and iPhones)   

Just make sure you take the best of the old (grilling), and the best of the new (propane torches and cast iron grill grates), and ignore the worst of the new (grains and flour, sugar and processed food), and you will be golden my friend!

Like a Barbarian lurking on the outskirts of Rome, you can pick and choose what you see as valuable from "Civilization".  You can reject the decadence, you can ignore the Romish breads in favor of your own herds... but, you can adopt the Roman steel sword, and notions of sanitation and aqueducts, or plumbing.  

It is possible to have the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS!!

Paleo diet to lose fat!


The Paleo Diet has shown remarkable success in helping people to lose fat/weight, and achieve a much better "body composition".   The amazing thing is that it can bring these changes about without:

1. Hunger
2.  Long sessions of exercise
3.  Injury from those long, boring exercise sessions you thought were necessary


Really!  But how can this be?

It's really just simple, proven science!

Our bodies are not designed to eat grains, particularly wheat, which has become a mainstay of virtually every processed food in America.  Wheat is now completely genetically modified to the point where it has no similarity to the ancient wheat of the Bible, or even to the wheat from the 1960's!!
This is a huge point: if you wish to research the topic in depth, I refer you to the book Wheat Belly by William Davis-  Wheat Belly the blog

But, since all carbohydrates,  like wheat, corn, white potatoes, etc. turns to sugar in the body, that is more than enough reason alone to severely limit them in the diet.


The other thing to limit greatly in your diet is SUGAR.


When you eat sugar, or its twin- carbohydrates- your body responds to the rise in blood sugar, (which is actually an emergency situation for your body!), by producing massive quantities of insulin.  Insulin, which as we know is what Type 2 (self-induced) Diabetics lose the ability to produce, after many years of ingesting so much sugar/carbohydrates that their body has become overwhelmed by the bodily insult!  Don't let this happen to you- it is becoming EPIDEMIC in modern America, largely due to the fact that now- 90% of food sold in the USA is PROCESSED: (Comes in a bag, or a box, and is not real food anymore, but industrial food.


Industrial food is loaded with sugar/corn syrup/wheat/soy and the other thing you need to get rid of on the Paleo Diet- industrial seed (grain!) oils!
Corn, Soybean, Crisco- these are all rancid, harmful oils that are not really food.


The Food Industry uses all of this stuff, in processed and fast foods (another no-no!), because it is CHEAP!  That is the only reason- nutritional value is not even on their radar!

So, bottom line, what do you need to do to-

Regain your health and lose fat?

It's really rather simple, and if you think about it, you probably already intuitively know this stuff-

You've just been brainwashed into the "low fat, high carb Standard American Diet"
for your whole life!

So, here is what you get rid of:
  1. Eliminate fast food
  2. Eliminate bread, pasta, anything made with flour
  3. Eliminate Industrial oils- margarine, soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil- any chemically processed oil
  4. Eliminate Legumes- dried beans- irritate the gut lining, just as does wheat- this is a huge problem
  5. Get long, painful, CARDIO/AEROBIC workouts out of your life (They lead to injury, burn very little in the way of fat/calories/, and do not build muscle, which is what you really want)
  6. Stop Staying up late at night- (This interferes with your body in a minor way, stimulating the stress hormone "cortisol", which causes you to store fat, among other negatives).

 And here is what you replace the above with:
  1. Whole eggs (free range is the best) 
  2. Real, PASTURED butter (Kerrygold is the best)
  3. All varieties of meat, and seafood  (Grass fed beef is best, but all of it is good- just be sure to include seafood, especially fatty fish like salmon and sardines)
  4. Vegetables and fruits  (Berries are the best fruit!)  Don't go wild on fruit, but include it.  Eat LOTS of green vegetables.
  5. Get on an intense, brief exercise program!  (Body weight exercise is best- pushups, pull-ups, sit-ups, brief sessions of sprinting and/or stationery bike "sprints" of 30 seconds or less, done for several "sets" lasting 20 minutes or less)
  6. Get LOTS of sleep!  8 hours minimum (This is really crucial for health and fat loss- stress, like lack of sleep, causes your body to want to hang onto fat)


That's it!  Follow the above subtractions and additions in your life, and sooner than you think, you will look and feel better than you would believe!  This is a promise!!


I hear you asking:   "But how do I eat this way??
Simple:

  1. Eggs and fruit for breakfast
  2. Salad with meat or seafood for lunch
  3. Grilled meat and vegetables for supper
  4. Snacks- if you eat enough at meals, you probably won't get too hungry. But it you do:
Almonds,  dark chocolate, coffee with real whipped cream, macadamia nuts, olives, full fat cheeses, or again- meat, vegetables, sardines, etc. are all fair game


Or, you could make it easy, and make the Paleo Quick Start Smoothie!

It really makes the nutrition part almost effortless, and actually more "available" to your body, since it is all "broken down" and ready to assimilate, raw food enzymes and all!!

But anyway, there you go- try it for 3 weeks!  If you do, I guarantee you will not go back-
the benefits are that amazing!

Barefoot sprinting in Winter?

Obviously, barefoot sprinting is not something one would often do in Winter, at least not here in Wisconsin!  Since we just had our first, belated snowfall on December 4, and my Sunday, farmhouse basement workout was on the agenda, I needed a substitute.

I always usually do kettlebell swings on my Sunday workouts, but today I decided to... up the ante!


I did intervals of kettlebell swings, interspersed between my chins, dips, aerobic/isometric chins and dips-aerobic isometric dip  and aerobic isometric chin ups.

Just like the intervals I usually do sprinting across my acreage barefoot, the kettlebell swings tax every part of my body, for the 5 or 6 intervals I do, but in a do-able, and really kind of enjoyable way. (If your body has become accustomed to enjoying exertion!)

After you've "gone paleo" for a while, cutting the processed crap, grains and sugars from your diet, and added healthy fats, proteins, fruits and veggies (all easily done via the Paleo Quick Start Smoothie!), your body actually starts to crave exertion!  Just like our cat, Zeke craves to go outside and just run, jump, and play, even this old almost 60 year old wants to do the same!  Hard to believe, in our modern sick, medicated, under-exercised, sedentary society- but, if we become healthy again, we actually-

Feel again like we did when we were 10 years old!!  TONS of energy, and happy as a lark!!

Move naturally!  Sleep LOTS!  Connect meaningfully with family and friends!  Play!  Make music, play golf, ride your bike, throw a frisbee, grow your garden, play in your yard, hike... you get my drift!

Live like you were put here by God to live a meaningful life, living up to your potential, fulfilling whatever gifts you have been given to develop, and then sharing them with others- this is what we are here for!

We are not here to watch spectator sports (we are meant to participate in sports- that's the whole point-they are supposed to be fun!) We are not here to watch TV- a little of good TVand movies is great; just think of TV and Netflix as dark chocolate- a little is great!  Too much... is heroin!  It will destroy you.

Start by eating right!  Believe it or not, then everything else will just make... common sense!
