PaleoJay's Smoothie Cafe #108 Everyday Life in Utopia

I could not resist this podcast title, which I read in the last chapter of Gretchen Rubin’s latest book, Better than Before.  Gretchen’s excellent book concludes with a quote from her daughter which of course was Every Day Life in Utopia.  The book is how to change our habits, in other words how to change ourselves and what we do on a daily basis for the better- exactly what I want us all to do here at PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe!

WHY do I recommend that you eat an Ancestral, or Paleo type of diet, without grains and sugar, organic veggies and pastured meats and eggs?  Why, in the final analysis, it’s so you will be healthier, and this in itself means you will be happier, i.e. better than before!

And if you couple this eating strategy of eating God and nature made foods, and eschewing man made processed “foods” with an ancestral lifestyle that includes plenty of sleep, brief and intense sessions of exercise balanced by sessions of rest and “tribal” connections of family, friends and neighbors, and you make sure to get out and move in the sunshine and in nature- why, then you will be better than before!  And you will be able to title your life Everyday Life in Utopia, just as I now do.

So many people, and I mean most people seem hell bent on pursuing WEALTH at all costs!  When they are young, they set these monetary goals, and they don’t set them aside no matter what!  They work largely sedentary jobs, for long hours away from what really matters (their family, friends, house and garden), and short-change themselves on sleep to “get ahead”.  It’s all measured in dollars...

They “don’t have time for exercise”, or getting to sleep early- then, they sleep later than they should in the morning, and either get a processed fast food meal on the run, or else just grab some processed crap like a bowl of GMO Gluten Happy Sugar Puff Flakes, and top it with skimmed “sugar milk” and also enjoy some “sugar water” orange juice!  And the worst thing of all is- they also put this garbage in the bodies of their most precious possessions- their own children!

This is the state of America today, by and large- we are spending our health to gain wealth!

It’s like a pact with the devil, or with MON-satan!  And then, when you are getting older, the health you have ignored for all of these years is gone- wrecked- kaput!  And at that point, you would gladly trade your wealth to regain your health- but that’s not how it works.

You may think you can go to a clinic or hospital, and they will give you pills and surgeries that will make you healthy again- but that is just a misleading mirage put forth by the drug companies and the hospitals and clinics to get your money.  The truth is that pharmaceutical drugs do NOT restore health; they merely mask symptoms at great cost, both in terms of money, and more importantly in side effects that are often worse than the disease symptom they are trying to mask!

So do it- go Paleo!  Live in accordance with the timeless laws of God and nature, in the way in which we have evolved.  Take a tip from our grandparents, live as they did!  Drink bone broth to heal your gut, which is damaged from GMO grains, and an open highway to autoimmune diseases.  Have a green smoothie each day, loaded with veggies, kefir, spices and fruit!  Just eat real foods!!

And then you too will be living Every Day Life in Utopia!

The Paleo Diet has shown remarkable success in helping people to lose fat/weight, and achieve a much better "body composition".   The amazing thing is that it can bring these changes about without:

1. Hunger
2.  Long sessions of exercise
3.  Injury from those long, boring exercise sessions you thought were necessary


Really!  But how can this be?

It's really just simple, proven science!

Our bodies are not designed to eat grains, particularly wheat, which has become a mainstay of virtually every processed food in America.  Wheat is now completely genetically modified to the point where it has no similarity to the ancient wheat of the Bible, or even to the wheat from the 1960's!!

But, since all carbohydrates,  like wheat, corn, white potatoes, etc. turns to sugar in the body, that is more than enough reason alone to severely limit them in the diet.


The other thing to limit greatly in your diet is SUGAR.


When you eat sugar, or its twin- carbohydrates- your body responds to the rise in blood sugar, (which is actually an emergency situation for your body!), by producing massive quantities of insulin.  Insulin, which as we know is what Type 2 (self-induced) Diabetics lose the ability to produce, after many years of ingesting so much sugar/carbohydrates that their body has become overwhelmed by the bodily insult!  Don't let this happen to you- it is becoming EPIDEMIC in modern America, largely due to the fact that now- 90% of food sold in the USA is PROCESSED: (Comes in a bag, or a box, and is not real food anymore, but industrial food.


Industrial food is loaded with sugar/corn syrup/wheat/soy and the other thing you need to get rid of on the Paleo Diet- industrial seed (grain!) oils!
Corn, Soybean, Crisco- these are all rancid, harmful oils that are not really food.


The Food Industry uses all of this stuff, in processed and fast foods (another no-no!), because it is CHEAP!  That is the only reason- nutritional value is not even on their radar!

So, bottom line, what do you need to do to-

Regain your health and lose fat?

It's really rather simple, and if you think about it, you probably already intuitively know this stuff-

You've just been brainwashed into the "low fat, high carb Standard American Diet"
for your whole life!

So, here is what you get rid of:
Eliminate fast food
Eliminate bread, pasta, anything made with flour
Eliminate Industrial oils- margarine, soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil- any chemically processed oil
Eliminate Legumes- dried beans- irritate the gut lining, just as does wheat- this is a huge problem
Get long, painful, CARDIO/AEROBIC workouts out of your life (They lead to injury, burn very little in the way of fat/calories/, and do not build muscle, which is what you really want)
Stop Staying up late at night- (This interferes with your body in a minor way, stimulating the stress hormone "cortisol", which causes you to store fat, among other negatives).

 And here is what you replace the above with:
Whole eggs (free range is the best)
Real, PASTURED butter (Kerrygold is the best)

All varieties of meat, and seafood  (Grass fed beef is best, but all of it is good- just be sure to include seafood, especially fatty fish like salmon and sardines)
Vegetables and fruits  (Berries are the best fruit!)  Don't go wild on fruit, but include it.  Eat LOTS of green vegetables.
Get on an intense, brief exercise program!  (Body weight exercise is best- pushups, pull-ups, sit-ups, brief sessions of sprinting and/or stationery bike "sprints" of 30 seconds or less, done for several "sets" lasting 20 minutes or less)
Get LOTS of sleep!  8 hours minimum (This is really crucial for health and fat loss- stress, like lack of sleep, causes your body to want to hang onto fat)


That's it!  Follow the above subtractions and additions in your life, and sooner than you think, you will look and feel better than you would believe!  This is a promise!!


I hear you asking:   "But how do I eat this way??
Simple:

Eggs and fruit for breakfast
Salad with meat or seafood for lunch
Grilled meat and vegetables for supper
Snacks- if you eat enough at meals, you probably won't get too hungry. But it you do:
Almonds,  dark chocolate, coffee with real whipped cream, macadamia nuts, olives, full fat cheeses, or again- meat, vegetables, sardines, etc. are all fair game


Or, you could make it easy, and make the Paleo Quick Start Smoothie!


It really makes the nutrition part almost effortless, and actually more "available" to your body, since it is all "broken down" and ready to assimilate, raw food enzymes and all!!

But anyway, there you go- try it for 3 weeks!  If you do, I guarantee you will not go back-

Paleo Quick Tip of the Day #45 Take FARMaceuticals to cure both yourself- and the WORLD!


Take your Farmaceuticals daily- cure yourself AND the world!

Any listener of any length here at Paleo Quick Tip of the Day knows that I, PaleoJay, believe that FOOD is the best medicine.  Hippocrates, the founder of western medicine declared this roughly 2000 years ago, and although his modern so called disciples have discarded his teachings in favor of ever-increasing dosages of pharmaceutical DRUGS-

Food is the best medicine is as true now as it ever was!!

Although nowadays, where and how your food is grown is every bit as important!

If your vegetables and fruits come from mega-farms where every inch of that farm is laced with pesticides, over-farmed to the point of near total soil nutrient depletion- you are consuming a tainted product!

We all know now that the human gut biome, that is our intestinal flora are crucial to our health. For instance, a recent study pointed out that artificial sweeteners encourage fat gain. The theory was that the artificial sweeteners, such as those in unsweetened soda pop, altered the gut biome since they are totally alien to our evolved symbiotic relation with our ancestral gut microbes.

In other words, our gut sensed SWEET, and switched on the fat storage, even though there was no honey or fructose to process...

but the fat storage trigger was engaged, and fat was produced!

So, drink artificially sweetened products and get fat quick!  And long term, too, since it doesn’t appear to switch OFF.

To return to my main point: Just as our Gut Biome is loaded with microbes we have a long history with, that help us to regulate our health, our moods and mental health, and how we extract life-giving nutrients from real foods-

So is the soil where we grow our foods loaded with microbes that we have a symbiotic, historic and ancestral relationship with completely necessary for our health, proper fat to body weight ratio, and mental health as well!

We all need to rethink our allegiance to pharmaceutical drugs!  They are poisons except for short term, emergency use- they are like Agent Orange in our bodies!

What we need for health is FARMACEUTICALS-

REAL FOODS!
GOD MADE VEGETABLES!
PASTURED ANIMALS!
PASTURED DAIRY!

And all produced on sustainable acreages, with largely organic practices that preserve and sustain the microbial health of that soil long term!

I know, that sounds crazy-  you’re thinking

“I don’t eat like a rat!  I eat human food, like sandwiches, pasta, candy... you know, the SAD Standard american diet perhaps, but not food for a rat!”

Well, if you eat those things, especially all forms of grain products, you are eating like a rat.  Rats are actually well suited little grain burners, and can digest grains safely without damage- humans are not grain or sugar burners.  We think we can eat foods unsuited for us just because we have done so for about 10,000 years at the most, and for most of that time in quite small quantities, and from grains that were not genetically altered  to increase production and also incidentally to increase the gluten levels.  Gluten is actually an intestinal irritant to humans, and opens the pathways within our gut linings to autoimmune diseases- those diseases where the body begins fighting itself.  Things like arthritis, diverticulitis, rosacea, eczema, multiple scerosis, psoriasis, type 1 diabetes... the list goes on and on!

Rats, on the other hand, along with most birds, have a unique ability to eat grains, and to thrive on them.  We do NOT. We can pretend to be a rat or a bird, but we are much more like a cow or a pig- they, like us, can also not properly digest grains without harm coming to their gut lining from the grain irritation.  They are fed these grains (and other things like candy wrappers) to stimulate fast fat gain.  This is another result of eating like a rat- you will gain lots of fat, fast when you eat lots of grains like wheat and corn!

To illustrate what grains, in particular GMO grains are doing to our intestines, we have only to look at US livestock- pig intestines nowadays in the U.S. are so damaged by the time of slaughter that they cannot even be used as casings to contain meat!  They rupture because they are so fragile and damaged, and so America is now forced to import our sausage and brat casings from Europe, where GMO’s are outlawed.  This used to be a billion dollar business in the US, and now it’s gone.

And this effect is from the short lifetime of a pig or cow in a CAFO or confined animal feeding operation- what kind of effect do you think it has on us humans, who are exposed to this toxic stuff for decades and decades and decades of life??

If you are one of the 60-70 million in the US that are reported to have severe digestive and/or other autoimmune problems, including autism which is running rampant among our youngsters these days, I would strongly recommend eliminating these grains from your diet!

And it is not only your body that is damaged by GMO grains-GMO grain fed  pigs that were introduced into running a maze (a kind of pig IQ test) did significantly worse that pigs fed a gmo grain free diet.  I think the damage potential from these grains is at LEAST as great upon the mind, as it is upon the body.

So come on back to the “land of milk and honey”- grass fed cattle and dairy, wild local honey, vegetables and fruits- real God made food!

PaleoJay's Smoothie Cafe #85 Be a Paleo Redneck!



If you think about it, paleo folks are kind of old school rednecks- they tend to hunt and fish their food, are outdoors almost all the time (hence the “red neck”), tend to be rural dwellers... kind of like hillbillies used to be before welfare and Walmart.  Kind of like Jed Clampett and Jethro, or Little Abner from the old newspaper comic - quite fit and self reliant, since he provided for his own simple needs and that of his family and community all by himself!



There is a lot in small town and rural America that is the very best that this country and its civilization has to offer.  Our major cities are amazing in their size and structures, but at what cost?  They are increasingly unsafe and crime-ridden, bankrupt, and absorb most of the revenues of the country and each individual state they are in... large areas of our major cities are actual, living nightmares of smog, crime, bad chemicalized water and air, and hugely overcrowded.

Elvis is a good metaphor for what has happened to America.  The young Elvis Presley was a paleo redneck- a good kid from a rural, small town upbringing- slim and fit very good looking... and, of course, with a great ear and voice!

Then, just as all of the US started doing in those years after World War 2-

He got too much, too fast, and way too long!

I mean too much of everything he thought he wanted.  And, he simultaneously lost what was really valuable to him- his privacy, his ability to walk around unnoticed, the quiet of the rural nature he was accustomed to, small town life, real friends that liked him for himself... he lost everything by gaining too much that was just glitzy and fake.

So did all of us, just to a lesser extreme.

We all take for granted in the western world now that we have enough to eat; too much actually. Too little movement, too much sitting, too much money even!  I mean, most would disagree, but think about it: in the 1960’s, families only had one car.  All meals were prepared and eaten at home.  One black and white television, and an AM radio in the car (with Elvis on it).

Now little kids have smart phones, computers, iPads, and big screen TV’s- and this includes welfare kids!  Cars are common to be owned by 16 year olds, and MOST meals are purchased at fast food and other convenience outlets.  And now, the husband AND the wife are expected to work full time, and much of the salary of the second income goes to taxes, which mainly go to support failing big cities...

And now most of us, just as Elvis did, have become fat, sick, addicted to all kinds of prescription and non prescription drugs, are depressed and feel like we have no time, so we stay up late to “have a life” and watch our big screen TVs, leaving us not enough time for quality sleep...

So hey- the future is in our past!  We know what we need to to, and it is already just beginning to start to happen. The move OUT of the big metropolitan areas, back to smaller communities.  Small local farms and ranches, smaller churches, local credit unions and banks, local government over big government, state over federal, county over state...

It worked wonderfully before, and it will again!  It won’t be exactly the same, but it will be quite similar, just with different and better technologies, but we will be restored and rejuvenated as- PALEO REDNECKS!

How to get Really Fat!

You really can’t resist- Resistant Starch!

OK, here is the answer you’ve been searching for- just HOW can you reliably get really, really big, sloppy, jiggly FAT?  Everyone wants to know how to do this, right?  Well, let me tell you right now- your old friend Pale
oJay has the answer!  I can tell you exactly how to get real fat in record time, easily and quickly!

First off- count your calories!  They are all that matter, after all, right?  So, count your calories closely, so you can start to consciously limit them.  Because, if you limit your calories to less than your body wants, you’ll lose weight, correct?  Some of that weight, perhaps even most of it will be muscle and bone, but hey- the weight is all that matters- the scale.

Next, limit your fat intake!  Fat has more calories per ounce than any other nutrient source, so you must try to eliminate fat from your diet!  Eat lots of healthy, whole grain products- processed cereals, low fat processed foods of all types, and lots of industrial seed vegetable oils.  Don’t even think about butter or bacon or, God forbid, coconut oil!  High fat all!

Exercise for long, long periods of time, extremely slowly and preferably on a metered cardio machine that counts exactly how many calories you burn each session.  ! hour per day is good; 2,3, or 4 hours daily is even better!  Move more and eat less, right?

Ignore food quality!  A calorie is a calorie is a calorie!  And so, you are better off eating a 100 calorie snack pack of cookies, rather than that avocado with over 300 calories!  Wash those yummy cookies down with a big Coca Cola, (100 calories), and you have saved 100 calories by not eating that evil avocado- pat yourself on the back.

Don’t train intensely, for strength!  Muscle weighs much more than fat, and your scale weight will look really bad- so stop doing resistance training!  NOW!

Also- don’t drink your calories- things like smoothies are LOADED with calories, and useless things like nutrients, that will NOT help you get really fat.  Instead, concentrate on  probably the most important tool in your “Get Fat” toolbox:

Eat LOTS of grains and sugars!   These two items will pack on the FAT better than anything else.They are low fat, even NO fat for the most part, and so they will spike your insulin after your blood sugar is driven way up high.  You will then have your blood sugar drop from the insulin, triggering new appetite for... more carbs and sugar!  This will repeat the cycle, over and over... and you will never feel full, because your blood sugar keeps rising and falling!

So, there you have it!  How to get really fat, and sick, and diabetic, and disease prone.

What?  You’d rather get lean, fit, and super healthy?  Well, there’s no accounting for taste, but that’s easy- just do exactly the opposite of all of that conventional wisdom!

Eliminate grains and sugars from your diet as much as possible.

Drink a large, green Paleo Smoothie, loaded with every nutrient you can pack into it, every single day.

Train intensely, for strength and strength-endurance- do you Perfectly Paleo Exercises daily- visualized resistance, self resisted, pushups, straight legged situps, hindu squats and pushups; bridging.  Buy a set of gymnastic rings, and make or buy a kettlebell!  Sprint.

Pay close attention to food quality, and nutrient density.  You are what you eat, and in the case of animals, you are what you eat ate!  Eat wild caught seafood, and grass fed animals whenever possible.  Pastured dairy products are also immeasurable better for you.

Exercise in brief, intense working sets!  FEEL your muscles working, and learn to relish the feeling- your body craves such work.

Eat LOTS of fat, to get lean!  This is key- fat will satisfy your appetite like nothing else, and there is good reason- your body needs good quality, natural God made fats more than any other category of nutrients.  Fat is needed to run our brains, and every cell in our body.  Fat- it does a body good!

And lastly, NEVER count, obsess, or limit your calories as a means to control your body weight or composition.  This just teaches your body to panic, and hold onto every bit of fat it can, and store even more, since it thinks you are starving.  Eat until satisfied, with plenty of real God made foods, and you won’t be hungry again for a long time.

And so, that’s how to get fat, or get lean; your choice!  But, I do have a couple of more tips for you on the leanness side:

It really is YOUR CHOICE!!

I know, you have probably never heard of sugar encouraging cancer, but this is real, up-to-date science now, nut just conjecture.  Here is a link to a brief explanation of how it works, in case you are scientifically driven-

This breakthrough was released just this past September, so if you go onto many web sites and old research they insist there is not a real connection... they are just out of date!  There IS a connection between sugar and cancer, and to deprive your body of sugars is one surefire way to hamper the growth of cancer cells.Cutting edge cancer treatment and research now uses this as part of cancer therapy- to starve the cancer.

How can this help healthy little old you or me?

Well, I always think that, if you don’t want to get a disease, say Cancer, heart disease, or diabetes, eat as if you have it already- low sugar, high real, good fats, and plenty of God made foods.  Don’t eat man made, processed crap food, and then you will never get those diseases!  Even if you have a genetic predisposition to one or another disease or condition, it’s like having a gun pointed at your head...

BUT IF YOU NEVER LOAD IT, OR PULL THE TRIGGER, YOU ARE STILL SAFE!!

And remember: bread, pasta, all kinds of cereal and more immediately turns to sugar, RIGHT IN YOUR MOUTH!!  So they count as sugar too... get your carbs from the veggies and fruits you eat, and that you put in your daily green Paleo Smoothie.  Perhaps a sweet potato, some white rice in small amounts... that’s all you need!
Did you know that your body can make carbs out of protein?  It can, and will if it really needs more.  So don’t worry about not eating enough carbs- there is no requirement in your daily diet for any carbs at all!  They are optional.

And, the best way to maintain a good, God made foods diet is to avoid grazing.  This is the way most people eat nowadays: not just 3 meals, but LOTS of little meals and snacks, all day long.  It’s so much healthier, and more satisfying to eat a really BIG meal, with plenty of good FATS in it, like, say: pastured bacon and a 4 egg omelette, along with coffee with coconut oil melted in it, and topped with real whipped cream!  That way, you will be replete with nutrition, and able to go about your day without even thinking about food, much less craving it, for HOURS on end!  Usually, on most days, I have a big glass of Paleo Smoothie along WITH my breakfast, and then a big, late lunch around 1:30 or so, and sip another glass of smoothie around 2:30 or so... and that’s it!  I don’t usually eat until the next morning, and this is my daily IF, or intermittent fast, which leaves me feeling energized and ready for my next mornings perfectly Paleo workout, before breakfast!  There are pronounced benefits to training in a fasted state, like accelerated fat burning, and it leaves you with a real appetite after you have showered and dressed.


The other point I want to make is this: if you think that

“Oh, this Paleo thing is strange- I just want to eat what I always have; I’m sure it’s fine to eat butter and margarine, but I don’t think toast and pancakes are any problem either”.

Really, lots of folks think like this!

I’ll tell you what, though- this type of thinking and rationalization puts you in the worst of all possible worlds, health wise.

If you’re going to eat bad, fake fats (like margarine); insist on keeping grains in your diet (but also love a big steak), and eat sugar whenever you want to...

Well, you’d better just plan on going to the Doctor on a regular basis, expect major (and minor) diseases on a regular basis as you get older, and have a really good medical insurance plan (which will become increasingly problematic as Obamacare continues to kick in)!  Because, my friend, you are going to be needing all those prescription drugs: the insulin, the statins, the hypertensive medications, the extensive dental procedures, and the list goes on and on...

If you don’t Go Paleo, you WILL break, in many ways, and just kind of rust away from the inside out.  Unless, of course, you die quickly from one of your many diseases.

Our modern, S.A.D. Standard American Diet is the perfect storm that destroys our health.  Add to that high stress, poor sleep, and the lack of or else the overdoing of bad, destructive exercise like endless cardio and/or heavy weight lifting...

You are self-destructing yourself!  I don’t mean to be negative, but sometimes we need to hear the truth told, as a plain dose of reality.  It’s all too easy to rationalize, and to procrastinate, and argue against doing something you really don’t feel like doing.

Change is hard, but once begun is half done!  So begin!  One meal, and one habit at a time- it’s incremental, and it gets easier and easier as you go!

It really is rather remarkable- even the usually middle-of-the-road, inside the box thinker and conventional diet cheerleader Dr. Oz has come on board with him along with his new, excellent book Grain Brain.  I know, it seems unbelievable that the Wizard of Oz, who has been the man hiding behind the curtain of outdated science for all these years, has now come out and jumped on the anti-grain, low carb, paleo bandwagon!

I don’t know what happened; maybe the wizard gave himself a medal, and got courage ala the cowardly lion- who knows?  At any rate, it appears that Dr. Oz refers patients to Dr. Perlmutter, simply because using his methods and theories of proper diet, he gets real-world GREAT RESULTS!

YES, FAT IS BACK!!

And carbohydrates, particularly GRAINS, and even more specifically WHEAT are all shown to be the dietary nightmare that they really are!

This turnaround by Dr. Oz seems to be a real turnabout of the entire dietary lipid hypothesis, that has been around since the 1960’s, and has never been proven...

You know, the hypothesis that virtually everyone has taken as gospel for all those past 50 years or so, the same 50 years that obesity has exploded, and diabetes, cancer, and heart disease are rampant in their spreading across the nation, and the world!

The hypothesis that told us fat is bad, grains are good... sugar is fine, whole grains are the foundation of our nutrition and  places them at the base of our stupid Food Pyramid and now My Plate...

Well, this whole theory is wrong- not only wrong, but exactly opposite of how we should be eating!  It truly boggles the mind that it has taken this long to convince people to start to look at the truth- I guess it kind of shows the completely addictive qualities of grains and sugars:

We don’t WANT to give up our DRUGS!

For that is indeed what they are, grains and sugar have drug-like effects, that also have the effect of making us fat, diabetic, and progressively very, very sick.


So, read David Perlmutter’s book- get the audio version if you don’t have time to read; that way you can just listen as you drive!  But get his ideas into your head, so that they can save your mind, and the rest of your body!  It’s never too late, as he points out, he has very elderly people reverse their symptoms of dementia, along with a host of other diseases, quite quickly.

Go Paleo, young or old, man or woman!!

The other thing I want you to remember to do?

ADD IN GOOD FOODS!  Eating a paleo diet is not just about subtractions!!

There are a number of folks who go gluten free- well, this is a great first step, but eating bakery goods made with rice flour, etc.- while not containing gluten, these products still  turn to sugar, right in your little mouth, and then proceed to poison your rapidly growing NOT so little body.

Step two- you give up grains!  This will really get you healthier, fast- but NOT if you still eat lots of processed foods, sugar, rice, soy- you will still be raising your blood sugar to dangerous levels!  All these years of worrying about our cholesterol levels- we should have been monitoring our blood sugar levels...

Step 3- add in lots of fats and vegetables!  A Paleo Diet is not just about eliminating bad, man made foods- more importantly, it is about
ADDING IN LOTS OF REAL, GOD-MADE FOODS!!!

Pastured butter- rich in K2- it takes calcium away from heel spurs, fights kidney stones, heart plaque, helps blood pressure regulate, and actually can help you remineralize your teeth and bones!  Pastured eggs, grass fed beef, pastured pork, organic vegetables of all sorts are all wonderful foods, and grass fed beef liver is a fountain of youth!  Full fat Greek yogurt, raw milk and cream, bacon- believe it or not, these are all extremely satisfying and healthy foods!
As for fruit, it is wonderful as well- in small amounts!  I usually use a handful of berries to flavor my daily paleo smoothie, perhaps with a small apple, and that will be it for fruit that day.  That’s all you need- berries in particular are loaded with nutrients and phytonutrients, but they come with the cost of raising your blood sugar- so keep it minimal!  Safe starches?  Same story- keep them minimal!!

A half cup of rice, a sweet potato on occasion- these are fine, and keep us part of  traditional eating in society... but keep it minimal!  Anything that raises blood sugar dramatically is playing with fire!

When tempted to eat sugar or carbs, just eat more fat and protein!  Throw in some veggies, perhaps steamed or grilled and then slathered with butter...

Don’t go hungry!  Just eat the right foods- real, God Made Foods!!

This is the way to health.

Yesterday I came up with my take on the viral youTube video What does the Fox say? by Ylvis, a pair of brothers from Norway.  They came up with a really fun, catchy song and video, which I have managed to make into my own little caveman version...

I hope you enjoyed listening to that as much as I did making it last night!  And now, you know that this is one solid year of weekly PaleoJay podcasts, and so a little celebration is in order!  And so, since I need to get out celebrating by working on my new “tiny house”, a little 8 X 14 foot little house, built by local Amish craftsmen- it is going to be a Fortress of Solitude, a golf club and Irish pub, a retreat in my back woods!  Who says PaleoJay doesn’t know how to have fun??  It even has a tiny little electric heater that really pushes out the heat for chilly Wisconsin autumn nights, a real bar! (just installed yesterday- yes, your own PaleoJay does imbibe to calm his inner barbarian- and lots more is planned for the decor...  stay tuned, there will be many photos of this little cottage in the future!

It’s important to maintain a sense of playfulness in ones life, especially as you get into your 60’s as I am...  I have my campfire down there in the woods, and rings of colored lights all around it, a bottle tree!, and a giant tree stump “stage” where I and other local musicians can perform for the neighbors!  It really is a lot of fun, and I will include you by showing pictures of it all on www.paleojay.com


PaleoJay’s Quick tip of the Day!



Today, I just want to give you, since you are my one and only listener, a quick tip or two that you can implement right away, and immediately improve your health and wellness!

Number one is coconut oil!  If you don’t use this wonder food daily, and liberally, start now!!  I always put a big Tablespoon into my coffee in the morning, along with whipped cream and cinnamon and cloves, and find it both very satisfying, and it has a way of getting your body burning ketones from the fat right away, giving you a very clear brain function.
Coconut oil is also a wonderful oil to cook with, since it is a medium chain triglyceride it actually helps to both burn efficiently and to actually help you to burn body fat!  This is one reason why I always recommend including liberal amounts of coconut milk into your daily Paleo Smoothie, along with plenty of vegetables, greens, spices, green tea, kefir... well, the list goes on, but a smoothie like this does more for your health, right out of the gate, than any amount of anything else you can think of, and really easily!  And, the coconut oil is a big part of it all!

You should always have at least two jars of coconut oil on hand- one in the kitchen, of course, and the other in the bathroom! That’s right, it is the ideal skin moisturizer, hair conditioner, and shaving cream!  I always have my jar in the bathroom with a butter knife in the jar- after my shower, I scoop out a small amount (a little goes a long way!), and rub it until it melts in my hands- then, I rub it all over my body and face!  Nothing moisturizes like coconut oil; and I love that it goes right into my bloodstream through the skin!  You will never use petroleum based lotions again, especially now that you know that they too go right into your bloodstream through your skin!  Sickening, really.

If you shave before the oil soaks in, that is all the lubrication your razor will ever need- never have I had such effortless, close shaves as I have since I started using coconut oil!  This would apply to both men and women...  And for women, to put coconut oil in long hair, let sit awhile, and then wash out- this is the best hair conditioner available anywhere!  Your hair and skin will both be smooth and healthy...

Just get a good quality brand of Virgin coconut oil, a pressed form of coconut oil rather than one that is chemically extracted- this would be a cheap, processed, inferior form of coconut oil.  Trader Joe’s has a great virgin coconut oil, as does Nutiva and Tropical Traditions... get one of these great oils, and improve your health and beauty right away!

NEW CABIN ROOF!!

I just got back, this morning from a whirlwind connection with my familial tribe.  93 yr. old father, year born unknown mother, and assorted brothers, nieces and nephews...the connections are diverse, and definitely not of the daily variety, but they are all- family!

I had gone down to Illinois to help my brother clear out an overgrown woods at his new house and acreage with my new chainsaw. (My old one was just worn out, having done more in its 10 year life than ever should have been expected of it!)  My new, 20” bar chain saw wasn’t cheap, but I will say it was a Stihl...

Anyway, as we worked, clearing the logs and fallen trees from a creek in the back of his property that had been overgrown and neglected for about 30 years, we were doing what has been done by man since time immemorial- working together, as a tribe, accomplishing real physical work that really needed to get done.  And as we worked, other relations all showed up, and then, it was time for a celebration of sorts-  we drove over the river and through the woods, to grandpa and grandma’s we’d go!

It was fun to connect with my little nieces and nephews, not to mention my little brothers, when we all got there.  It’s funny how many old memories are rekindled, how many shared laughs from the past are in our minds, as if experienced only yesterday!
One nephew wanted to see Grandma and Grandpa’s old photo albums, and really laughed when he saw old photos of his dad as a kid, and of me when my hair wasn’t white as the snows of Mt. Olympus!

Now, traveling can be exciting and diverting, but it can also make it hard to remain paleo, even if you have convinced SOME of your family to also “get on board”.  Food is the hardest part:  the best solution is to, as I did, pack a generous lunchbox full of
Paleo Smoothie!  A proper, paleo type of smoothie, as I outline in detail on www.paleojay.com, and in my two ebooks Paleo Quick Start and Perfectly Paleo Exercise , which are both available anywhere online that books are sold, like Amazon, the iBookstore, BarnesandNoble.com, and of course at paleojay.com.
I say a proper smoothie because, a real smoothie is made by you, at home in your Vitamix blender, not purchased at a Smoothie Bar, or bottled by a manufacturer!  The reason for this caveat?  The smoothie you make yourself is the very healthiest, most nutrient dense nutrition possible for your body to consume.  The other, “bought ‘en” version are loaded with useless sugars, too much fruit, not enough fiber, and concentrate totally on taste, and hardly any at all on nutrient density!

Each morsel you consume should go to further your body’s ability to repair, regenerate, and revitalize itself!  Anything else just drags you down.

So, I packed canning jar after canning jar of Paleo Smoothie in my giant lunch box, along with a cold pack..
 Next, put in ample amounts of snacks, like almonds mixed with dark chocolate chips, celery with almond butter on it, an apple, macadamia nuts, well- any nut but a peanut, which is a legume!  If you have been paleo for any length of time, you know what to pack!
I always include a couple of tins of sardines.  If you are really hungry, nothing is better for you than these little fish, since you are consuming the whole carcass- the bones, the organs (like the liver!)- this is really one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet.
And so, you get the idea- it is way easier to prepare, and not be misled by temptations when you are perfectly full already.  It also saves you a lot of money!

Another way to cope is by just intermittently fasting  or IF.  This is simply compressing you “eating window” into a smaller block of time, i.e. rather than 3-6 meals (and snacks!)  per day, just eating two, or even one meal a day, and fasting or skipping one meal.  Most Paleo Gurus recommend skipping breakfast, perhaps having some Paleo coffee, which is just fat mixed in your coffee, to give you a ketogenic head start to the day.  I like coconut oil and heavy whipped cream, topped with cinnamon and cloves, but that’s just me- you may prefer Dave Asprey’s Bulletproof coffee, which is MCT oil and grass fed  butter mixed in your coffee, or Mark Sisson’s Primal Egg Coffee

which is, you guessed it, eggs in your coffee!

Me, I guess I’m just not a true Paleo Guru- I like to skip supper instead, and so, after my morning Paleo Coffee of coconut milk and cream, which I like to sip as  I work out ala Perfectly Paleo Exercise, and also as I drive to work after a big breakfast.  I include my Paleo Smoothie in my breakfast, and also throughout my work day in my big lunch box, packed in wide mouth canning jars, and made fresh in the morning in my big Vitamix blender.

A also pack a big lunch, often a big salad, topped with meat or seafood, hard-boiled eggs, lots of greens, sometimes anchovies, avocado, and real olive oil based dressing- YUM!

Oh, as far as the coffee goes, I think coconut oil and cream are enough- I put a slab of butter right in the smoothie, along with a couple of raw pastured eggs!  All bases covered; well, isn’t that what a Paleo Smoothie is all about??

Supper time rolls around, but I am not hungry for supper, most nights!  One less meal to plan, and clean up from, and steal time from your hobbies and projects and music and neighborhood tribal connections...

But, when I travel, sometimes I do it the Paleo Guru way- Coffee with fat in it in the morning, big lunch and/or smoothie later in the day, and dinner that evening- I mean, if I’m just traveling in the AM, why stop for a meal?  Get there, then eat AND socialize!
Then you can be a really good tribal member!  Hurrah Paleo Peep!

Also, you may be tempted to pack or buy enroute Paleo Products- bars, potions, all kinds of convenience products.  Although OK occasionally, it is much better to just eat real food, all of the time!

My brother packed me, instead of sandwiches for the return journey, swiss cheese and salami rolls!  They were so good when driving, and quite satisfying and nutritious...

And, the day I drove down, I had a smoothie in the morning in the car, and then a bowl of chili that evening- so, that day, I skipped lunch!

There are so many ways to tackle I F, you can mix and match them, but I stand with my favorite:  Skip Supper!

The other problem when traveling and visiting is sleep!  This one is huge, and the hardest one of all to cope with, I think.  Strange beds, people interacting constantly...
And did you know that people with inadequate sleep, or those that work shift work jobs, increase their cancer risk by 5 times!?

The best rule is to just get to bed as early as you can!  Then, you can get up before everyone else, ideally, and even go for a walk, meditate, or even do a little visualized resistance, or at least your daily warmup for your joints and muscles before you are distracted by the activities of the day.

So, go ahead and connect with your TRIBE!  Eat well and ancestrally, teach them all by your example and level of fitness.  Help out with projects!  And then, head home knowing that your tribe is all around you, in spirit if not in fact, and that in every real respect they are really, truly a part of you.

Then, if you are like me, your ever-faithful PaleoJay, you will head home, but stop at your family cabin to... do more chain sawing!  yikes!!  A big storm had dropped a giant tree on our cabin, punching a hole in the roof, and necessitating a new, green metal roof replacement!  Glad about that metal part...

Lots and LOTS of logs and branches to cut and stack, and drag and pile...  Another long afternoon, this time by myself.  But, in my mind, the whole tribe was there,enjoying the grounds as they will in the future, benefiting from my labors.

That makes it all more than worthwhile!

PaleoJay Podcast# 50 Stop wearing casts on your feet and your head! And, proper breathing for wonderful health!

Almost everyone in the modern world is fettered in their movement, and in their eyesight, by the casts they burden themselves with.  I am talking about shoes; which if worn constantly, make your feet incredibly weak and susceptible to all sorts of problems... like plantar fasciitis, flat feet, and just plain pain in the foot, which then tends to move upstream, causing pain in the knees, hips, and back!  All of these chains of movement are interrelated, and if one link in the chain is weak, it alters the gait and just screws thing up throughout the chain of movement, and real damage to joints and resulting pain can and will result through bad planes of movement!  This is all very serious stuff, long term.  You can tough it out for awhile, but eventually you will become unable to move if you don’t address the imbalances.

So, bottom line- at least for SOME of the time, your feet must be barefoot, and walking or best of all- sprinting!

NOTHING strengthens a muscle and tendons like using them; the more vigorously the better!  So, at a bare minimum, start leaving your shoes at the door, as the Asians do- do NOT wear your shoes in the house!  It’s much more sanitary as well... Socks are fine- they do not force your feet into unnatural confinement and paralysis; they just keep your feet warm.  So, that is step #1.  Your feet will gradually strengthen, thru barefoot walking about the house...

For step two, start walking barefoot around the yard, or park!  It really is crucial to gradually accustom your feet to real work- walk barefoot outside as much as you can in the warmer months!  Each step will gradually strengthen the complex tendon/ligament/muscular structure that is your foot.  If you walk in shoes, your feet are in a cast, a cement overcoat if you will, that supports the foot like walking in moon boots- think about how fast, if you have ever broken a bone or witnessed someone who had their arm or leg in a cast- how incredibly fast that limb withered and became weak when so confined!  Now, think of your feet, having been in a cast for most of your whole life-

No wonder most folks wind up with foot, knee, hip, and back problems!!

So, start at the source: fix your feet.

Walk around barefoot!  Jog around on green space (yard, park, whatever) barefoot!  Sprint barefoot!  Sprinting barefoot, which I do once per week or so, is the ultimate foot and leg and total body workout, bar none!!

Just run sprints for a short distance, “wind sprints” we used to call them in high school track in the olden days- anywhere from 50 to 400 yards or so... no need to measure, just run really hard and fast (for you, there is no measurement of competition here!), and then stop, and rest a bit.  When you have caught your breath a bit, take off the other way, back to where you started.

Repeat, for oh, 4 to 8 more times...  it’s your call, really!

You are working your entire body, musculature, tendons, ligaments, heart and lungs- the works!  Nothing in the world will lean you out like barefoot sprinting-

And it hardly takes any time at all- if you go beyond 15 minutes you’ve done WAY too much!

I always have flashbacks to little 8 year old Jay when I do my barefoot sprinting in my yard, since it makes me feel just like it did back then when I run all-out, barefoot, the wind in my hair and the grass against my bare feet...  the only difference now is that my hair is white- and really, that is the only difference, and I am 61 years old!  It really feels great!!

The other really great thing about barefoot sprinting is that it forces you to breathe properly, i.e. COSTAL Breathing!

Like most things in modern living, our breathing has also become adulterated, since most people breath shallowly, or “chest breath” a minimal amount, constantly...

Like wearing shoes constantly, which drastically weakens your feet, chest breathing in a minimal fashion drastically reduces the strength and vitality of your entire body, resulting in conditions like asthma, speech impediments like stuttering, and even just the ability to speak or sing in public effectively!  Minimal breathing is like another cast you have thrown on your body, and hampers you more than you know, and almost everyone suffers this condition!!

The proper way to breath is to gradually fill you lungs up, from the bottom, using your diaphragm...   All singers and wind instrument players learn this!! It is vital for them, but it is ALSO VITAL FOR LIFE!!

And so, it is vital for you to learn proper, costal breathing: here’s how-

You take a breath in, try to have your belly expand first.

Then,  continue the process of inhaling- after your belly is completely full of life-giving air-

Expand more into the chest- the more the better!!  This expands the rib cage (costal means relating to the ribs), and then, when you exhale, the forceful contracting of the rib cage finally results in the forceful contracting of the abdomen-

which results in the most wonderful ab exercise in the world, and so if you breath properly in this costal fashion, YOU WILL PERFORM THOUSANDS OF REPS OF THE BEST ABDOMINAL EXERCISE IN THE WORLD EVERY SINGLE DAY!!

And so, not only do you supply your body with the maximum amount of life-giving oxygen possible by breathing costally-  you also shrink your gut, automatically!

So, there is one more cast you have gotten rid of on your body- first the shoe cast, and now the shallow, improper, barely sufficient for life breathing cast!

And now, the final cast, the one you wear on your head- EYEGLASSES.

Yes, the simple eyeglass.  Just a simple way to see better, right?  No problem with that, you say, thank God we have a solution for perfect eyesight- just wear glasses, or contacts, LENSES of some type, and our vision will be perfect, right??

Untii NEXT year... and the year after that...

AND THE YEAR AFTER THAT!!

And you know what?

It NEVER STOPS- Every year, for the rest of your life, as long as you rely on these casts for your eyes, your eyes will get weaker, and weaker!!

It’s just like exercise for your body- do NOT get a stronger prescription- Now is the time you are taking back your eye health!  Try to find a behavioral optometrist if you currently wear eyeglasses or contact lenses.  They will work with you to regain your vision, which has been lost from relying on the casts of corrective lenses, which progressively weaken your eyes.  Next eye exam, request a weaker prescription!

If you have a standard optometrist, just like a standard Medical Doctor they will resist your trying to improve your actual health. But, a behavioral optometrist will gladly work with you!

The point is to gradually weaken your cast, or prescription, and thus gradually strengthen your vision. IT REALLY WORKS, and works very well-

I wore glasses for 30 plus years, and now do not need them at all!!

The eyes can be strengthened, just as can the muscles and supporting structures of the body, including tendons, ligaments and bones, through progressive stimulation through Perfectly Paleo Exercise and optimum Paleo Nutrition!!

You can exercise the eyes, by moving print away until it starts to blur, and then moving it forward until you can just make it out- hold it, and read THERE- the print will gradually come into clear focus!

Do this several times a day, and if you are nearsighted, you will slowly become less so!

If you are farsighted, reverse the process: take a printed page, and gradually move it towards you, until it starts to blur...  move it back until you can barely make it out- and it will gradually clear as well!

And so, there you have it!  Start to clear you life of casts; Self Imposed Impeders of our natural senses, and quite a bit in our lives will start to improve, rather than gradually decline, which everyone now takes as a given.

It’s not.  Our Creator did not make us to just get sick, weak, infirm and die- He wouldn’t do that!!  We are meant to be vital, strong and fit until the end!  Only MAN, with his inventions and “improvements” can get in his own way- with shoes, eyeglasses, and lazy breathing!  All of them have their place, but they need to be kept at arm’s length- kind of like using a chain saw- they’re great, but also very dangerous.

Use them carefully, and put them away as soon as you can.

We are meant to operate in our natural state, as God made us.  Tools are for only occasional use!

I think it is a given that young children, whose bodies and minds are developing, should be given the most nutrient dense, the most very nutritionally supportive foods that we can!  Traditionally, pregnant mothers have been known to require the very best nutrition, rest, and the purest environment possible to ensure a healthy, undamaged fetus and then BABY.

To me, this is kind of a “DUH” moment; but, it’s beginning to appear that I am, if not alone, at least in the minority in modern day America with such thoughts-

I, for one, (although I know that the Department of Agriculture, the Food Pyramid/My Plate, and the Dieticians have all been co-opted into supporting grain subsidies and the selling of big Ag’s GMO grains above all!)- Even I was utterly horrified and ashamed of what it has come to; what we are feeding our kids!

Again, look at the photos on the site linked to above, and think to yourself:

What nutrition is in this crap?  How can kids develop normally, or even at a sub-normal level, consuming this junk??

Answer:  They can’t!

Obesity, diabetes, attention deficit disorder, autism.... the list goes on and on, and these diseases, that used to only strike old men are now taking down 9 and 10 year old children.

If you put sugar laden gasoline into a car, the engine will self-destruct-

So why do we put SUGAR LADEN FOODS into our very CHILDREN???

The results are identical.

Even more so in the case of living children, since they are in the process of building their bodies, their engines of life.  A car engine comes ready built, and is still destroyed by such ill treatment!

The science is out- Sugar is the poison, and real food and real fat is the savior!!

This is not even debatable any longer- the science is there, ready to be read...

But, most Doctors, who have basically NO knowledge of nutrition are not willing to change what they think they knew from what they heard in the 1970’s... as are most Dieticians....

AND, most importantly, most Governmental Bureaucrats!

But, I want YOU to know that yes, nutrition is vitally important for health and wellness, and looking good and feeling good, mentally and physically-

Money for the drug companies, that profit by keeping us sick, but (barely) alive.

Money for the medical clinics, that were trained by the drug companies, that profit by treating us for diseases that are easily treated by proper nutrition and lifestyle.

And money for the government, through taxes and payoffs by the big grain cartels, to keep the system running- growing huge fields of grains and especially GMO grains- putting small farmers out of business as much as possible since they are “wild cards” and might grow real, honest-to-God nutritious foods that might compete with the altered varieties that Monsanto comes up with- sending agents in Body Armor and with automatic weapons to pour out raw milk from Amish farmers as if it was drugs...

We have entered nutritional madness, and it is all about money!

Don’t fall victim to this mindset.  Take charge of you and your family’s health.

Eat real foods, meat, seafood, veggies, grass fed butter, grass fed beef, pastured pork, nuts and seeds.  Get what you can from LOCAL FARMS- THEY ARE THE BEST!
Local farmers care about what they produce; as you should about what you eat!  Let’s get back to basics- eat locally, and seasonally!

You don’t need processed crap from big ag and the big grain cartels.

Just remember- if Great Grandma didn’t recognize it as food, IT ISN’T!!

All of us need to be very cognizant of what we are doing, in this day and age about our own health, and that of our families!  It is a very strange time, in that we don’t even know anymore what we should eat- hint- real food- and we are inundated with bad dietary, lifestyle, and fitness ideas constantly.  In addition, we have received these utterly wrong messages about eating lots of whole grain products, vegetable oils instead of real, honest to God-made fats like coconut, pastured animal fat, and grass fed dairy products- constantly, many of us since birth!  If you were born after 1980, you have been taught a line of BULL for your entire life. Can you say Ta Tonka?

Only now, with the interest in the Paleo, Primal, Ancestral, Barbarian template for natural human living and eating, is the truth beginning to come out.  Thanks to the internet, and recent technologies like smartphones and computers, real science backed ideas, like that of evolutionary biology, can be widely disseminated and spread to anyone who takes an interest...

And that is what I want to mention to you, my favorite listener, today- If you are too busy, or just don’t want to, or cannot make your health a matter of top priority in your life, well then you need to find someone who can, and will help you in this vital matter!

Being truly fit and healthy is not something optional; without your health in balance nothing else in your life is worth anything.  Strong words, I know, but think about it:
