Just do it- try everything Paleo!

I’m sorry to be so corny about my subject this week, but lately I’ve come to think that this kind of sums up the whole “life” thing.  I mean, it is so wonderful to have the knowledge and ability to control our own health!  It would have been inconceivable just a few years ago when we all thought that the government and medical clinics knew it all, and if we just relied on them, as we relied on mechanics to keep our cars going, we would be healthy and happy forever!  For a price.

And now, we have the Paleo diet and lifestyle, with all the research and the incredible wealth of scientific papers and books that back up the amazing effectiveness of just cleaning up our diets, as opposed to medicating ourselves to death.  The power really is within us to regain and enhance our health and fitness.  Not in the hands of far-off doctors and clinics and government agencies that will “save us”!

And so, all should be well and good- we know what to eat: real foods, pastured and natural meats and eggs, vegetables and fruits free of chemical pesticides, grass fed dairy, coconut oil and some sweet and white potatoes.

And we know what not to eat: grains, especially wheat rye and barley, anything GMO, processed and “low fat” foods of any type, fast food and especially SUGAR.

And then, there are all the incredibly intuitive things that our great grandparents knew and we are just now rediscovering to be crucial:

1.Good Family and “tribal” relationships between friends and family
2.Solid sleep each night, at least 8 hours, in a totally dark room
3.Daily or near daily contact with Nature, immersed in a forest, or at least spending time in a park
4.Physical exercise on a regular, every day basis, including some form of strength and resistance training, lots of ground based sitting, squatting,  and stretching.
5.Regular quiet moments of reflection and inwardness, either through religion and prayer, and/or via meditation.

Of course, clean air and water are also crucial, but we all have to do there just the best that we can.  For me, these two things alone are worth relocating to a more rural environment, but not everyone has that option.  Just do the best you can, and try not to live in or near a really large, polluted city.  But, if you can’t fix this, don’t worry about it for now.  Just concentrate on the five points I just listed.

I really think those are the BIG BULLET POINTS OF PALEO!  There are lots of refinements and tweaks that can be explored, and I do that here on a weekly basis, and in my own life.  You should too!  Make “being healthy” one of your hobbies.

BUT, those five points, along with the guidance of what to eat, and not to eat- that is the key!

Why do so many either not start changing their lives to comply with these simple guidelines, or else do it for awhile, maybe a month or longer, and then stop and go back to their SAD American diet days?  Reversing all the undeniable good they did for themselves and their health?

Why do they decide to give up, and go back to eating cheese doodles and all the other sugary crap, and get back on the highway to headaches, heart attacks, autoimmune disease and body destroying pharmaceutical drugs along with endless surgeries??  Is eating fast food really worth that!!??

Looked at logically, of course it isn’t.  But, unfortunately, most Paleo adopters do “fall off the wagon”, with some hardly even getting on, or else just subjectively “choosing” those more painless parts of it, and then claiming that the rest are “unimportant” at least to them, because they are immune and special.

I am saddened by these choices.  I know just how beneficial a paleo type of diet can truly be, how liberating, how self-enhancing of mind and body!  So, I am glad to say that Robb Wolfe is writing a book on the subject, called Wired to Eat, which is almost completed.  Here is the link: http://robbwolf.com/2016/12/07/wired-to-eat-coming-soon/

You can read about it there, but in essence he is speaking about how our biology is working against us in this matter of health, since our paleolithic ancestors (and us!) are hard-wired to want to:

1. Eat as many calories as possible, especially “sweet” ones that maximize body fat storage
2. Move as little as possible, so as to no jeopardize those precious fat stores

This is our body speaking to us, and it explains why we are so reluctant to do what is the best for ourselves in this current NON-PALEO world we live in, where calories are everywhere, and to work, strive, and move are actually optional.  This sets us up for having our biology work against us!

It sounds like Robb’s book may really help a lot of folks to get around all of this.  Some of us just manage to “rebrainwash” ourselves through podcasts, books, and the internet research to follow through with our diet and lifestyle.  Most don’t.

Paleo Quick Tip of the Day #51 How to stay Paleo


How to stay Paleo- eat a ton of veggies-All the rest is window dressing!

I know, this sounds like a vegan post, which I most definitely am not.  But, I stand by it.

If you start your day with a Paleo Green smoothie, loaded with veggies and fruits, pre and probiotics, lots of good fat and God made protein like free range eggs, your battle is more than half won- drink a couple of good sized glasses over the day, and you are already on track.

For one thing, you are quite full, and not vulnerable to be tempted by bad fake food.  For another “once begun- half done” - the old truism is very true.  Once you have started off on the right foot, it is much, much easier to continue- have a salad with some olive oil and vinegar, topped with meat and hard boiled eggs for lunch, some nuts mid-afternoon, and then (this is my ultimate deal sealer) grill a big juicy steak!  (I always try to grill bacon as well, which I can heat in the morning with a few eggs- yum!)

The point is to always have lots of really good foods on hand- ready to heat and eat, or just eat- then, temptation is easy to resist.

Another thing- even though I live in a pretty rural area (which I love!), even here we now have several places where we can get things like sushi, and Vietnamese spring rolls.  You can just pick them up, and you are set for a nutritious, paleolithic meal instantly!

A good outdoor grill is a wonderful Paleo tool!  I just got a new, Weber charcoal grill (charcoal is vastly superior to gas- use hardwood charcoal and you are in for wonderful foods).  My old grill is still functional; I set it back by our “tiny pub” in the woods out back for parties and gatherings... it was from the 1970’s, so your investment lasts a long, long time!

Anyway, once or twice a week I shop for meats and veggies, and load up that grill!  Then, after an hour or so enjoying myself out by the grill, I have good, God made Paleo food for days, just heat and eat.  Microwavable veggies are a perfect companion- I like to heat up butter at the same time as I do the veggies to top them off!  Sometimes I am happy to just heat up two boxes of veggies, with butter, and that is my meal!

I think a real problem that folks have with staying Paleo is when they try to go too low carb.  There definitely are advantages to going low carb, but low carb is not the same as no carb.  Especially if you have a spouse that isn’t really on board with the paleo diet, win them over by loading them up with LOTS of veggies (with butter and sea salt!), and also by having occasional sweet potato fries and loaded baked potatoes with sour cream, and even more butter! These “safe starches” will not hurt your health, especially if you work out they can even help you get healthier!

There is a place for really low carb; mostly for therapeutic uses as in the ketogenic diet- if you have an autoimmune disease, obesity, or conditions such as epilepsy, autism, alzheimer’s, chrone’s disease, or diabetes- then  a very, very low carb diet may be perfectly appropriate, even medicinal!

But for basically healthy, well folks: some safe starches will not impede your health, and may even enhance it!  Have some fried rice with that beef and broccoli- just keep it in moderation!

The last thing I’d do to keep on keepin’ paleo?

Listen to paleo podcasts.  PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe is one, and my other is Paleo Quick tip of the Day, both on iTunes and Stitcher.  But Robb Wolf’s the Paleo Solution is invaluable, as is Chris Kresser’s Revolution Health Radio.  Latest in Paleo is another, as is Superhuman Radio with Carl Lenore... the advantage of listening to podcasts is that they reinforce, in a very personal, just me-to-you kind of informality, just what you are trying to do, why you are trying to do it, and just how really important it is to you in your life.

Oh- wait- one more thing!

STAY AWAY FROM MEDICAL DOCTORS, AND THEIR
RECOMMENDATIONS!


This last is super important- medical clinics, hospitals, and the American Medical Association (along with their “trainers”- the pharmaceutical drug manufacturers, the FDA, and Monsanto itself) are totally invested in selling you as much bad, man engineered fake foods that destroy your health, and then selling you as many drugs as they can that mask the symptoms of your ruined health.

This is no illusion- follow the dollars!   There is so much money to be made if people are lured into eating processed foods in the selling of the foods that cause disease....

But there is even MORE money in selling the drugs to treat the diseases they cause!

Medical Doctors have pretty much been turned into drug pushers.  And most commercials on TV are also drug pusher commercials!!

So- one more thing- avoid commercial TV!!

And it goes without saying: avoid drugs!  Legal, illegal, it doesn’t matter- and you know what?  Illegal drugs are probably less harmful!!

We’ve all been brainwashed, literally for our whole lives- I mean nutritionally brainwashed!

How were we brainwashed?

Eat low fat- eat LOTS of whole grains- pasta, whole grain BREADS and cereals!
COUNT CALORIES!  STARVE YOURSELF!  MOVE MORE AND EAT LESS!!

These are just the more prominent LIES we’ve been brainwashed with since birth- by the mass media, our own precious Government agencies like the FDA, the Dept. of Agriculture, the grain cartels like Kelloggs and Post and the myriads of BREAKFAST cereal manufacturers, the American Medical Association... and the list goes on and on.

Why would they do such a thing?  Mislead us, for over 50 years about proper nutrition??

At first, it was well-meaning- they all bought into the false science of Ancel Keyes, and even put his photo on the cover of Time magazine in 1961, praising him for uncovering the cause of heart disease!  Trouble was, he had “cherry picked” the data- only using the data from the countries that supported his theory that dietary fat had anything to do with heart disease... in other words, he falsified the data to support his wanted results!

Later the McGovern committee supported this false idea, and with the full might of the US Government behind it, the fight against fat was on in full force!

The results?  We are all much FATTER, SICKER, and UNHEALTHY!  Obesity and Diabetes have gone through the roof!!

So, what is a budding Paleo Quick Tip of the Dayer to do?  REGRAINWASH yourself!

Start listening to podcasts, on an ongoing basis!

Really, this is not just self-serving since I provide Paleo Quick Tip of the Day and the PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe- but there are many other wonderful podcasts that can help you to reprogram yourself in alignment with MODERN SCIENCE so you can resist the enticements and criticisms of those around you that are still IGNORANT of how to eat, exercise, and move in accordance with our ancestry!  Like your friends, your Doctor, your relatives, the television and radio.... you get the picture- you need reinforcements!

You need to start listening- don’t get me wrong- books are great, and books like The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf,
Cholesterol Clarity by Jimmy Moore, and Perfectly Paleo Exercise by Jay Bowers are all wonderful to get and read!
But there is something very visceral about listening to someones actual voice as they tell you what they’ve discovered- it’s like talking to a friend, and you can really internalize just what they are trying to impart to you.  Also, you can listen easily while you are doing something else- no setting aside additional time!

Driving is the main way people listen- we all drive somewhere, pretty much, every day- instead of mindless radio, just... play a podcast!  You can pause when you get there, and then resume- you don’t miss a word.  Or walking, or washing dishes, or cleaning your house...

HOW TO LISTEN?

You can just use your phone!  I have an iPhone, and it is drop dead easy on that- just use the podcast app... but, truth be told, I actually use an app called DOWNCAST.  It’s a simply wonderful app, and effortless to use...  STITCHER is another, and a FREE app, that you can use to gather your podcasts into playlists.  I like Stitcher, but it does “redo” the audio so it has a lower audio quality... but, more importantly, WHAT should you LISTEN TO????

PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe, of course!  Rate us on iTunes- we want more cafe patrons! And SUBSCRIBE- then, each and every episode will magically APPEAR when it comes out! WOW!

The Livin La Vida Low Carb Show with Jimmy Moore- Maybe this podcast should be number 1, even ahead of my own- Jimmy is a legend in this area- he has literally a thousand podcasts or more.  He started Atkins Low Carb, but has evolved into a Paleo convert, and knows EVERYONE that is an expert in the field, and interviews them on a regular basis.  He’s funny, smart, a great interviewer; and he walks the walk, having once been 410 pounds, and now a fit and healthy NORMAL weight! Don’t miss Jimmy!

Relentless Roger and the Caveman Doctor- These two are great sources of paleo ideas: Listen to them play off of one another, and I guarantee you will learn lots!  I like it that they are NOT an interview show- most shows are!  Not mine, though... and not theirs!

Chris Kresser and Revolution Health Radio:  I can’t believe I haven’t put him up top- Chris is THE most knowledgable guy
in Paleo, and if I was sick, HE is the one I’d want to be my doctor- really!  Just gone in for a weekly, shorter podcast- and only 30 minutes instead of LONG- Don’t miss Chris!

Paleo Magazine Radio:  This is another great one- lots of subjects, covered concisely in an entertaining and easily accessed manner!

Not Just Paleoo:  This is a very eclectic podcast- you never know just WHAT the young host, Evan Brand will cover next!  He goes into all sorts of stuff, and however strange it gets... it’s always interesting!  Recommended!


There are others, but this is the cream of the crop!  Put them all in your playlist, Downcast Stitcher, or Podcasts app, and listen on a regular basis- make this your “go-to” car driving entertainment.  CHANGE YOUR LIFE!  REGRAINWASH YOURSELF!!

PaleoJay Podcast #46- Get on Board with a Paleo Lifestyle Before You Go Broke and Die!

I don’t mean to over-sensationalize it, but the future of health care looks that extreme- you will be part of one of two groups.  The first is that of a state run health care system, where all problems will be “medicated”, that is treated with a pill, or a drug.  We know how Big Government does things, don’t we?  One canned answer for every disease or problem...  No time to assess lifestyle.  Nutrition doesn’t matter- just look at our governmental My Plate, that recommends grains and vegetable oils as the mainstay of a healthy diet!

With the health care system of the future now pretty much set in place, this state run system will be running huge deficits by default, right from the start.  But, there will be alternatives- so called boutique or concierge styles of medical practice.  This is where you contract with one group of doctors and a clinic on a yearly or monthly basis, paying a fee upfront to be one of the patients of this private clinic.  Then, this clinic has the financial incentive to keep you healthy!  The healthier they keep you, the less the plan costs, and the more profit they make- this puts all the incentives in the right place.

Robb Wolf, of Robbwolf.com has an elegant answer to this type of system in his
www.specialtyhealth.com.  This is just this type of a boutique style of clinic that I spoke of before, that is based around keeping you, the patient healthy, rather than just using crisis management as it’s program, as standard medicine does today- you know, just waiting until the person is really sick and broken, like with a heart attack or full blown diabetes, and then finally doing something like surgery and drug prescriptions loaded with side effects; all at a huge cost, and vastly reducing the patient’s quality of life.

 This is the way to prevent health care/prevention- empower the patient, i.e. YOU through conveying simple knowledge that is based on the most recent scientific facts- not medical knowledge as it existed 25-60 years ago, as is done in standard medicine today!

I know, for now we all need to have a basic insurance that covers us in the case of catastrophic injury or illness- but really, the point is hopefully that you never have to use it.  The only way this will happen, for now, is for you to educate yourself, and apply the principles of an ancestral type of diet and lifestyle, starting by eating real, natural, God-made foods exclusively, getting rid of all the crap man-made processed sugar bombs, sleeping well and amply, exercising briefly and intensely, and walking and stretching regularly.  Oh, and by ignoring any advice given by our standard medical clinics and the Government- this is key!  Go to any standard medical clinic, and you will by default be given drugs- this is what they have become- drug pushers!

By doing all of the just mentioned items, and thus caring for ourselves as people have done since time immemorial, we will exclude ourselves from governmental interference in our health and well being, and put our health care back where it belongs- in our own hands!

So, I hope you becoming convinced that it is indeed up to you to take care of your health, and that of your families!  When these “boutique” style medical practices are up and running nationwide, and you have one in your area, that will of course make it easier, since your physician and clinicians will actually help you on your paleo way through information, encouragement, and various medical tests that will show if your are indeed on the right road, or are veering off into diabesity....

But for now, we just have to do it ourselves- but then, it really is always up to us ourselves, isn’t it?  It’s just that now, we need to be Paleo Pioneers- driving our barbaric covered paleolithic wagons into the future, their square wheels kind of skidding along since we haven’t figured that out yet, but still knowing much better than those drug dependent sick people that live in the big, gleaming, yet tenement-ridden cities just how to eat, live, and enjoy life naturally!

How to “go Paleo” - Easily!


Think of “going Paleo” as returning to your roots- because you are!

The so-called Paleo diet is NOT just that of our primeval ancestors, chasing wooly mammoths with spears and flint knives (although it is that as well!) ... it is the diet of our great grandparents, Pa and Ma Ingalls Wilder in the little house in the big woods.  It’s the diet of the cowboys, and the American colonials who revolted from King George in England and set up this great nation.  It’s the diet of EVERYONE in our past- the Knights of the Middle ages, the Romans, the Greeks, the Sumerians- it goes ALL THE WAY BACK!  

They all ate REAL FOOD!  We are the FIRST few generations in HISTORY that have eaten... LARGELY PURE UNADULTERATED CRAP! 

Sorry to be so graphic, but the processed stuff we ingest today is hardly worth being called food!  

Things were not that horribly bad even 40 years ago... by the 1980’s and 1990’s, processed fake food like substances from factories and labs and fast food “engineers” and food flavor chemical “scientists” had reached the point that, through marketing and political lobbying- they got increasingly huge subsidies for modified GRAINS that were not even natural foods anymore!  AND the government and the FDA and the ridiculous Food Pyramid and now My Plate all followed in lockstep, telling us all to _

“Just Eat Lots of this Crap!  Real food is dangerous!  Eat heart healthy GMO grains and plastic margarine, put chemically extracted oils on everything, and drink lots of skimmed (nutritionally barren sugar water) milk- ALL WILL BE WELL!

Well, we’ve by and large followed this rotten advice for 50- 60 years, progressively getting more and more behind the whole idea, reinforced by the AMA and the ADA actually BACKING it...

And, as a nation, and increasingly as a WORLD-

WE ARE GETTING FATTER, SICKER, MORE RIDDLED WITH TOTALLY PREVENTABLE DISEASES LIKE DIABETES, DEPRESSION, HEART DISEASE, AND CANCER, THAT  HARDLY EXISTED 100 YEARS AGO!!

What should we do?

“Go Paleo, young man! (or Woman)!

It may seem overwhelming to overturn a lifetime of brainwashing.

But never fear!  PaleoJay is here!!

The best thing to do is to go to www.paleojay.com  I will always try to steer you right, my friend...

But, to my mind, PODCASTS are the single best way to “reconfigure your marketing/manipulated brain” back into reality!  Think of them as a way, whilst you are driving, walking, working around the yard or walking, to GET YOUR MIND BACK IN SYNC WITH YOUR ANCESTORS!   Also, to get up to date with the real RESEARCH that is out there, since the powers-that-be only try to hush all of that up- 

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE!

I will give you here a list of podcasts (and they all have accompanying blogs, as well!), that will give you ample information to REFORMAT YOU MIND from the BIG BROTHER SWILL you have been fed since birth, by the government, Big Ag, Big Pharma, and Big Advertising...

I suggest you just, even if you are now doubtful, just LISTEN to what they all have to say.  Over time, I think you will gradually be convinced, because the SCIENCE all backs up what they say, and your own common sense will evaluate, and realize TRUTH when you hear it.  SO, here are your Podcasts to listen to:   This can be your new “commuting hobby!” (Or other task-oriented activity wherein your mind was previously wasted...)

Pie-leoJay- Pies are now Paleo!

Yes, friends- it turns out that I've been wrong- wrong about PIES! 

It seems as if, in paleo circles, pies have been the "bad guys"- high in sugar, flour, gluten, starch, and every other paleo/primal boogie man you can think of!  But, the recent studies at the prestigious Pie Council institute prove that pie, all kinds of pies,  are the new SUPERFOOD!  Yes, it appears that, even though pies such as apple, pecan, cream pie fruity peanut butter, and even coconut cream mint fluff pie have been demonized for years, they make up for their horrid content by making us really happy!  

Yes, the endorphins created in the body by really tasty, high carbohydrate, loaded-with-sugar pies are so powerful- that they literally make us thin, strong and healthy!

Jimmy Moor- "A pie a day keeps the fat at bay!"

In light of this information, I ran a little experiment with my wife at a local restaurant:



Wow!  A great time was had by all!!  So, take it from me, PaleoJay, and all your other Paleo friends listed above:

PIE IS PALEO!


Well, I hope you've figured it out, but this is April Fool's in October!  

Pie is not even faintly paleo, is a horrible dietary choice, and should be avoided! Really!!

I'm just having a bit of fun, since we stopped at a place that had this whirling pie display case...


Here is what I really had; honest!  And it was great, and totally filling!!


I'm just having a bit of fun here!  The message is the same, from both me, and the (above-mentioned-somewhat-mis-spelled paleo luminaries):  

Grains are poison!
Sugar is too!!
So are "seed oils", margarine, crisco, cool whip, etc.

Paleo Continuing Education- the BEST Paleo Podcasts!


It is really important that you continue on your Paleo journey for your whole life!

Continuing to educate yourself is crucial to "keep on keeping on"!  

Even though you think you understand and have assimilated all of the paleo diet and way of life, trust me:

There is never enough learning!  Ever!  Not in any field of endeavor...

So...  listen to podcasts!  Here are some of the very best:
  1. The paleo solution  Robb Wolf is the best!  You can also just go to iTunes, and type in: The Paleo Solution
  2. The Livin' La Vida Low Carb podcast with Jimmy Moore- Jimmy's blog with umpteen links!

You can also, as above, just type in the name Jimmy Moore in iTunes- subscribe to ALL of his podcasts- there are more and more each day!!

      3. Latest in Paleo!  Angelo Copolla does a great job of digesting, and then broadcasting virtually ALL that has happened in Paleo in the past week.  NOT to be missed!

      4. Transform Your Health with Dr. Josh Axe  Dr. Axe is a great resource- though not strictly Paleo, he is at least 90%... and he has such an upbeat, engaging way that he is great to "reinforce" your paleo education long-term!

      5. Chris Kresser  You really don't want to miss this guy!
Probably the brightest guy around, Paleo nutrition-wise!  He makes you THINK! 
Not one to go "with the flow"...

     6. Underground Wellness  Sean Croxton is a great resource- "YOOHH"- quite the personality- but great info and depth as well!  Listen up!

He makes a convincing case for not including gluten even in paleo "cheats." At his seminar he said to "cheat" with a gluten-free beer or a corn tortilla and not to wreck your immune system with bread. Because that's exactly what wheat does. Lectins in wheat are generally considered by researchers to be the most dangerous because of how they can disrupt the gut lining. In good digestion the gut cells have healthy microvilli (the brush thingys) rich in enzymes that help break things down in order to usher usable proteins into the bloodstream.

Lectins in gluten assault the microvilli, potentially leading to poorer absorption of nutrients and increased gut permeability, which can allow poorly broken down proteins into the bloodstream. This can activate the immune system, leading to autoimmunity and inflammation.

Sound complicated? The Achilles heel of Robb's book is that it might not appeal to people who are intimidated by science. If you like watching NOVA and enjoyed biology class, this book is for you.
If the very thought of omega-3 fatty acids gives you a massive headache...maybe you need some fish oil and frankly you can skip the science-y chapters, because they make up only half of the book. The other half is practical implementation: how to get nutrients, when to supplement, how to exercise, and how to plan meals. One of the take home messages is that almost everyone has the ability to do paleo. If you can make scrambled eggs and saute chicken breast, you can do paleo.
