PaleoJay's Smoothie Cafe #85 Be a Paleo Redneck!



If you think about it, paleo folks are kind of old school rednecks- they tend to hunt and fish their food, are outdoors almost all the time (hence the “red neck”), tend to be rural dwellers... kind of like hillbillies used to be before welfare and Walmart.  Kind of like Jed Clampett and Jethro, or Little Abner from the old newspaper comic - quite fit and self reliant, since he provided for his own simple needs and that of his family and community all by himself!



There is a lot in small town and rural America that is the very best that this country and its civilization has to offer.  Our major cities are amazing in their size and structures, but at what cost?  They are increasingly unsafe and crime-ridden, bankrupt, and absorb most of the revenues of the country and each individual state they are in... large areas of our major cities are actual, living nightmares of smog, crime, bad chemicalized water and air, and hugely overcrowded.

Elvis is a good metaphor for what has happened to America.  The young Elvis Presley was a paleo redneck- a good kid from a rural, small town upbringing- slim and fit very good looking... and, of course, with a great ear and voice!

Then, just as all of the US started doing in those years after World War 2-

He got too much, too fast, and way too long!

I mean too much of everything he thought he wanted.  And, he simultaneously lost what was really valuable to him- his privacy, his ability to walk around unnoticed, the quiet of the rural nature he was accustomed to, small town life, real friends that liked him for himself... he lost everything by gaining too much that was just glitzy and fake.

So did all of us, just to a lesser extreme.

We all take for granted in the western world now that we have enough to eat; too much actually. Too little movement, too much sitting, too much money even!  I mean, most would disagree, but think about it: in the 1960’s, families only had one car.  All meals were prepared and eaten at home.  One black and white television, and an AM radio in the car (with Elvis on it).

Now little kids have smart phones, computers, iPads, and big screen TV’s- and this includes welfare kids!  Cars are common to be owned by 16 year olds, and MOST meals are purchased at fast food and other convenience outlets.  And now, the husband AND the wife are expected to work full time, and much of the salary of the second income goes to taxes, which mainly go to support failing big cities...

And now most of us, just as Elvis did, have become fat, sick, addicted to all kinds of prescription and non prescription drugs, are depressed and feel like we have no time, so we stay up late to “have a life” and watch our big screen TVs, leaving us not enough time for quality sleep...

So hey- the future is in our past!  We know what we need to to, and it is already just beginning to start to happen. The move OUT of the big metropolitan areas, back to smaller communities.  Small local farms and ranches, smaller churches, local credit unions and banks, local government over big government, state over federal, county over state...

It worked wonderfully before, and it will again!  It won’t be exactly the same, but it will be quite similar, just with different and better technologies, but we will be restored and rejuvenated as- PALEO REDNECKS!

I know, we all have too MUCH stress in our lives...

Stress in our jobs, our relationships, our family life, finances- the list goes on and on- but you know, we evolved to be able to handle stress!  And when that stress is missing: our bodies really can’t adapt- for certain types of physical stress, at least, we really require it to be truly healthy.


Eustress is the term for a positive stress: Eustress, or positive stress, has the following characteristics:
Motivates, focuses energy
Is short-term
Is perceived as within our coping abilities
Feels exciting
Improves performance

In contrast, Distress, or negative stress, has the following characteristics:
Causes anxiety or concern
Can be short- or long-term
Is perceived as outside of our coping abilities
Feels unpleasant
Decreases performance
Can lead to mental and physical problems

And so, with that is mind, let’s concentrate on the type of stress we need: Eustress:

We need the stress of gravity bearing down on us!  Our bodies actually require it, and are adapted to it, to be healthy.  When the astronauts went into space, all kinds of problems developed- muscle wasting, bone atrophy- we need the stress of gravity bearing down upon us, day and night!

What other stress do we need?

We need the occasional stress of exerting our muscles at a high level! Walking a lot is expected by our bodies, as are occasional bursts of high intensity exertion (as when escaping from a sabre tooth tiger, or sprinting to spear a wooly mammoth)!

Without this occasional stress (that can be duplicated by Perfectly Paleo Exercise), our bodies deteriorate, and basically “save precious calories” by getting rid of muscle, and bone mass that appear to be unneeded!

We also need the stress of working- figuring out hard mental and physical problems to remain fully human.  Just HOW do we dig that pit to entrap that mammoth, and then how do we transport it back to the tribe?

And, speaking of the tribe: we also need the stress of dealing with that tribe- How do we deal with Yag, who is challenging our leadership role in the tribe? (translate this to the office at work)...
And how about your mate, who has always been wonderful, but is now not dealing well at all with Jag-Kotha, your brother’s spouse?

You see, it has always been complicated!

And, these interpersonal things are necessary for our health, and the health of all the human tribe.

We are social animals- we are not meant to be alone and isolated.  Ever...

So-
We need the stress of physical exertion, occasionally- usually very mild, and sometimes quite demanding, to be healthy and happy, both mentally AND physically.

We need the stress of a natural environment, whether savannah, desert, woodland, or northland cold- we need to exist in nature. This means birdsong, many varieties of plant life, animal species different from human- we NEED this variety of Nature that God provided to us!

AND, it appears we need the stress of natural anti-toxins in plants, like anti-oxidants to keep us healthy as well.  The latest research tends to show that anti-oxidants are not really healthy, in and of themselves- they stimulate our own bodies to respond to the stress of them to overcompensate; much as exercise makes our muscles stronger- to to secrete the hormones necessary to overcompensate, and make us stronger in reaction to them.

This might seem like a fine point- but it is the main point I am making here: Our response to stress is what makes us strong. It’s in our DNA.  WE NEED STRESS- EUSTRESS, BUT STRESS IN THE RIGHT, NATURAL WAY.

Exercise naturally, in a natural environment, barefoot and without eyeglasses and other crutches like weights to overcompensate and ultimately injure our natural response to the eustress of overcompensation of effort- Perfectly Paleo Exercise!

We NEED nature herself: in whatever form she takes, we NEED it- we need to forest bathe, savannah bathe, just BE in Nature in whatever form, since we are PART of nature, and cannot exist apart from it.  As much as we pretend we are special and unique, WE also are just a part of Nature.  Outside of it, we might as well be in a straight-jacket, in an air-conditioned room, with only white noise for entertainment and company... Perfectly safe, comfortable- we should be perfectly happy!

Natural FOOD and WATER- we need the stress of those natural foods- the hunting, or at least the procuring from a local source- animals that are part of nature, grass fed in the case of ruminants- eating the food that they were intended to eat, not GMO grains that rupture their intestines and make them fat and sick, not chemical laden processed foods, loaded with corn syrup and other sugar, gluten from modified grains... Water that is NOT loaded with chlorine and fluoride and other chemicals to make it BETTER than natural, real water- Just Plain Water!!

Well, I guess I’ve kind of wandered into DISTRESS territory, the area you want to AVOID.

So, here you go: avoid the kinds of distresses like:

Processed foods
chemical water (Big City Water)
Weight Training=UNNatural Training
Living in a Big City if you can! (Far from Nature)
Especially Urban Violent Ghetto types of areas- as FAR from actual nature as you can get! No real nature, paving everywhere, humans the only species, no plant life, no good food- this is the worst of the worst scenario!
Working on a Night Shift!  (Slow suicide- really really UNnatural and unhealthy!) AND late night TV watching- really messes up your natural circadian rhytmns!!
Toxic family relationships- constant fights, drug use, late night TV and bar visits, conflict and criticisms

And so, there it is:

Stress is really good, and integral to our health and well-being- but only it is natural and short term and to be expected in our genome.

AND SO- only avoid negative stress, distress, that are UNnatural, and will destroy what you are meant to be- Man Made Stressors.

Accept and thrive on God Made Stressors, like:

Forest Bathing- just walking through a pine forest, letting the testosterone-laden pollen from the pines detox you from our plastics-estrogenic environmental poisons

Perfectly Paleo Exercise- Naturally exercising you body in the way that God Himself intended- using your own muscles as the resistance!

Anti-Oxidants- DO NOT take anti-oxidant pills, or powders or whatever potion- eat lots of natural, God made veggies!  My gosh, it’s all so simple if you think of it- eat like your Grandma did!

Sleep a LOT- at LEAST 8 hours per night!  Actually, this is an ANTI stressor-but it is that important that I put it here- SLEEP!!

Throw away your glasses, throw away your shoes!

Well I know that’s not realistic- but you should at least MINIMALIZE their use.  The LESS you wear your glasses or contacts, the better your eyes will be.

The LESS you wear your shoes, the healthier your feet, knees, back, and posture will be!!

Have a good tribe, GOOD family/people that you get along with and who support one another.

This last is incredibly important, and so often overlooked!
If you do not have a happy, vital tribal connection with a group of people that you see on a really regular basis...

YOU will not be happy, or healthy!

We are tribal, family peoples.  Without that connection, we are LOST.

No exceptions. Sorry- we are at bottom PALEO PEOPLE.

UNCHANGED.

Without our tribe, we are not only doomed to a slow death...

WE ARE NOTHING- WE DON’T EVEN EXIST!

What i’m going to say here will seem very controversial to some of you: BIG, Top-down sorts of solutions to things...

NEVER WORK OUT!

I really mean it- NEVER!

Ever since the original colonials in the US rebelled from the BIG, top down, high taxing, literally big wigs in England (and powdered wigs at that!), the wholesome, forward thinking self-determination of the individual citizen has been paramount!  The smallholder, the citizen farmer or tradesman, was empowered to self determination- no royalty telling him how to act!  No big government telling him (or her) how to behave... as long as they followed the law, which was determined collectively by the citizens at large, and refereed by the government.

Mostly, by the LOCAL GOVERNMENT.

Once things become decided by big, impersonal, largely politically swayed and controlled entities, everything goes against the wishes of the actual, working citizen.

What does this have to do with the Paleo Smoothie Cafe?
What does this have to do with Health, Fitness, and Nutrition??

Everything.

It is BIG GOVERNMENT that has come out with the worthless FOOD PYRAMID, via the Dept. of Agriculture...

It is BIG GOVERNMENT via the FDA that tells us we can’t consume raw milk, and pour Amish milk and cream on the ground, by sending out armed SWAT teams to do so...

It is BIG FOOD corporations and Grain Cartels, that have the Big Government in their pockets that mandate the mantra, via their paid scientists, that “grains are good, meat and fat is bad”, that runs counter to all recent science...

It is BIG PHARMA that still allows advertising of DRUGS on TV, and that funds our medical schools, INDOCTRINATING medical doctors and dieticians in an utterly outdated scientific stance, telling us all, from the top down to “EAT PROCESSED, LOW FAT FOODS AND GRAINS- DON’T EAT REAL FOODS LIKE MEATS, DAIRY, AND VEGETABLES”!

Really, when you hear it put that way- isn’t it just obvious that Big is definitely... NOT better?

Virtually everything is better on the small, personal scale!
YOU can do an experiment of ONE on yourself:  what makes you feel better- eating real foods, real, Paleo, God made foods like pastured meats and dairy, wild caught seafoods, real fats like olive and coconut oil and butter and tallow, and naturally raised vegetables and fruits?

Or processed GMO grains, in the form of all sorts of snack foods, breads cakes and pastries, chips fries and breading, mostly fried in a slathering of industrial seed oils ala margarine, corn/cottonseed/peanut/safflower/canola/crisco-whatever crap trans-oil they can squeeze through chemical extraction out of virtually anything!!??

Try out both versions for a month or so...

You will know, beyond a doubt, within a couple of weeks which is best.  Common sense...

Yes, remember Common Sense by Thomas Paine, that helped to ignite our oh so productive Revolution from BIG Government?

Society, according to Paine, is everything constructive and good that people join together to accomplish. Government, on the other hand, is an institution whose sole purpose is to protect us from our own vices. Government has its origins in the evil of man and is therefore a necessary evil at best. Paine says that government's sole purpose is to protect life, liberty and property, and that a government should be judged solely on the basis of the extent to which it accomplishes this goal.

Wonderfully stated, both back in 1776, and just as well stated NOW.

Our government should be dominated by the SMALL governments: local, community governments!  THEY would not presume to tell us what to eat- we all know that they don’t have a clue- we do!  We eat ancestrally- what our grandparents ate, and theirs, and back forever- that’s what to eat- not what some sanctioned bureaucrat decides, after being bribed by industry or Big Government itself to ram down our throats for their own benefit.

I guess the bottom line is this: figure out health, nutrition, and fitness by yourself. Just as you figure out, by yourself how to live your life, make a living, put a roof over your head, choose a spouse, start a family, buy a car-

No one can, or should, tell you what to do- YOU do!

Thank God- we are all experiments of ONE!  WE can choose how to eat, where to live, how to raise our children, where and how to worship, how to exercise- when Big Government, Big Medicine, or big ANYTHING tries to butt in and intercede- tell them to Butt Out.

Real, Vital, Life-enhancing HEALTH is actually quite easy to achieve-

1.Just eat REAL FOODS. Foods made by God and Nature!
Your appetite will tell you how much.
Exercise NATURALLY.  No machines. No weights!  Bodyweight, and virtual resistance- using the muscle against itself, like a cat, ala Perfectly Paleo Exercise.

You can use pushups, you can use gymnastic rings, you can use pullup bars and dip bars, p-bars and other “tools” to make you think into, and vitally flex and strengthen your muscles, tendons, and ligaments- but the ultimate tool is
your mind!

You have to flex each movement as intensively as possible, and then your results will be
AMAZING!

And none of it comes from outside of yourself.

You can do it all with only your own body, and mind- like a cat can, and does- with NO Big Cat Government telling them how to do it.

It’s really not that hard to do- you don’t need any BIG HEALTH organization like the Bodybuilder magazines, or fitness gurus, or P90X, Zumba, or any of the plethora of exercise gizmos and whatsits on the market like Crossfit, or exercise made up machines that fill the infomercial airwaves like myriads of locusts-

You can do it YOURSELF!

That is the beginning of Perfectly Paleo Exercise, in a nutshell, thanks to John Peterson, who is the modern day version of Charles Atlas.

And now, you are off and running- NO reliance on BIG authority telling you to ruin your joints with weight lifting or long, slow jogging...

No BIG authority telling you to do WOD’s or multiple sets to failure- (don’t ever exercise to failure, by the way!!)...

No Bigwig telling you what to eat- because- you just can NOT LISTEN!! (And tell others not to, as well!)

NO Big Pharma or Big Medicine telling you to TAKE DRUGS!!  JUST SAY NO!  LEGAL, OR ILLEGAL!!
The irony is, I don’t know which is worse!!

And so, there you go- in a long-winded (for me) sort of way, since I try to keep these podcasts short and sweet, I have endeavored to implore you to:

Ignore big government, as much as possible.  Go local, as much as you can in these troubled times-

Buy food locally. Know your farmer or rancher. Grow or raise as much of your own as you can!

Exercise at home, with your own body as the only resistance, mostly.( there are a few tools that can help you focus your bodily resistance effectively)- www.paleojay.com will keep you informed- more to follow!

Pay attention to your own health- OWN it!  NO ONE knows your body like you do- if eating a certain way works well for your health- how you feel and perform- keep doing it!!  Lab tests are... by and large, far inferior indicators, and  fall into the realm of “scientism”, or 19th century science.
Most of modern nutritional advice falls into this category.

Stay away from exercise “classes”- most are really, really bad!  You need to figure out your own way, your own “class” by yourself.  It really is NOT rocket science- every wild ANIMAL on earth has it figured out!

Crazy PaleoJay bottom line?
DON’T listen to big government- think for yourself!
LISTEN to your OWN BODY!  If it feel healthy, productive and natural to you, it probably IS! (no matter what someone else says)
Your Doctor knows nothing about nutrition!  He has no training- his training is drug based.
Nutrition claims on food packages are propaganda- LIES to fool you, via your friends in Big Government, Big Ag, Big FDA, and Big Advertising.
EAT REAL, GOD MADE FOOD- THAT’S ALL YOU NEED TO BE HEALTHY.
Ignore exercise gurus.  YOU are your own exercise guru- better by far than any other!! Even if you’ve never exercised before- your BODY and your mind will combine to be the perfect teacher, once you understand the basic principles.


And so, just remember that King George is long gone- small, local government should be the rule of the day in the USA...

It’s not, but it certainly SHOULD be- and, with your self-actualized help, it will be in the future-

Once again- Back to the future- back to Small, Local Government and all other referrees of our lives...

Because that is all that they really are, or should be:

Paleo...... or NOT!
It really is YOUR CHOICE!!

I know, you have probably never heard of sugar encouraging cancer, but this is real, up-to-date science now, nut just conjecture.  Here is a link to a brief explanation of how it works, in case you are scientifically driven-

This breakthrough was released just this past September, so if you go onto many web sites and old research they insist there is not a real connection... they are just out of date!  There IS a connection between sugar and cancer, and to deprive your body of sugars is one surefire way to hamper the growth of cancer cells.Cutting edge cancer treatment and research now uses this as part of cancer therapy- to starve the cancer.

How can this help healthy little old you or me?

Well, I always think that, if you don’t want to get a disease, say Cancer, heart disease, or diabetes, eat as if you have it already- low sugar, high real, good fats, and plenty of God made foods.  Don’t eat man made, processed crap food, and then you will never get those diseases!  Even if you have a genetic predisposition to one or another disease or condition, it’s like having a gun pointed at your head...

BUT IF YOU NEVER LOAD IT, OR PULL THE TRIGGER, YOU ARE STILL SAFE!!

And remember: bread, pasta, all kinds of cereal and more immediately turns to sugar, RIGHT IN YOUR MOUTH!!  So they count as sugar too... get your carbs from the veggies and fruits you eat, and that you put in your daily green Paleo Smoothie.  Perhaps a sweet potato, some white rice in small amounts... that’s all you need!
Did you know that your body can make carbs out of protein?  It can, and will if it really needs more.  So don’t worry about not eating enough carbs- there is no requirement in your daily diet for any carbs at all!  They are optional.

And, the best way to maintain a good, God made foods diet is to avoid grazing.  This is the way most people eat nowadays: not just 3 meals, but LOTS of little meals and snacks, all day long.  It’s so much healthier, and more satisfying to eat a really BIG meal, with plenty of good FATS in it, like, say: pastured bacon and a 4 egg omelette, along with coffee with coconut oil melted in it, and topped with real whipped cream!  That way, you will be replete with nutrition, and able to go about your day without even thinking about food, much less craving it, for HOURS on end!  Usually, on most days, I have a big glass of Paleo Smoothie along WITH my breakfast, and then a big, late lunch around 1:30 or so, and sip another glass of smoothie around 2:30 or so... and that’s it!  I don’t usually eat until the next morning, and this is my daily IF, or intermittent fast, which leaves me feeling energized and ready for my next mornings perfectly Paleo workout, before breakfast!  There are pronounced benefits to training in a fasted state, like accelerated fat burning, and it leaves you with a real appetite after you have showered and dressed.


The other point I want to make is this: if you think that

“Oh, this Paleo thing is strange- I just want to eat what I always have; I’m sure it’s fine to eat butter and margarine, but I don’t think toast and pancakes are any problem either”.

Really, lots of folks think like this!

I’ll tell you what, though- this type of thinking and rationalization puts you in the worst of all possible worlds, health wise.

If you’re going to eat bad, fake fats (like margarine); insist on keeping grains in your diet (but also love a big steak), and eat sugar whenever you want to...

Well, you’d better just plan on going to the Doctor on a regular basis, expect major (and minor) diseases on a regular basis as you get older, and have a really good medical insurance plan (which will become increasingly problematic as Obamacare continues to kick in)!  Because, my friend, you are going to be needing all those prescription drugs: the insulin, the statins, the hypertensive medications, the extensive dental procedures, and the list goes on and on...

If you don’t Go Paleo, you WILL break, in many ways, and just kind of rust away from the inside out.  Unless, of course, you die quickly from one of your many diseases.

Our modern, S.A.D. Standard American Diet is the perfect storm that destroys our health.  Add to that high stress, poor sleep, and the lack of or else the overdoing of bad, destructive exercise like endless cardio and/or heavy weight lifting...

You are self-destructing yourself!  I don’t mean to be negative, but sometimes we need to hear the truth told, as a plain dose of reality.  It’s all too easy to rationalize, and to procrastinate, and argue against doing something you really don’t feel like doing.

Change is hard, but once begun is half done!  So begin!  One meal, and one habit at a time- it’s incremental, and it gets easier and easier as you go!

Back to the Future 2- a New Paleo You!


Last week we started you on your journey back to the future, by making you a more paleolithic self, starting with DIET alone.  Now, we will continue our 4 week total Paleo self reinvention- I hope you have done well for the first 7 days!  If you have made it intact through that first week, know that you have done the hardest part by far!  The first few days, especially, are the most difficult, as you retrain yourself to eat correctly for you species, which of course is the homo sapien species, not the grain and sugar eating  Bird species of diet which is the current misguided approach...

Even if you slipped up once or twice, it’s no big deal at all- the point is to gradually and systematically keep moving in the right direction- passing on grains and grain based products, fast “fake” foods, and boatloads of sugar and/or artificial sweeteners (which are basically the same thing- BAD!).  If you slip and fall, just get back on the horse and get going in the right direction!  

This week, although it is still early for really beginning to exercise, I want you to start- Walking!  Not really for exercise, or for burning calories, but just because it’s what humans do.  We move, not like we’re being pushed with a cattle prod, but at a natural, pleasant pace, for a good portion of our day.  For now, park at the back of the lot at the store, at work, and walk the extra 2 or 3 minutes it will take you to get inside.  Make it a habit- my 93 year old father has done this his whole life, and still does it!  Take stairs, not elevators.  Just live like people did 100 years ago, and you are pretty much on track with being paleo!  Real foods, prepared at home, when eating grains they had the non-GMO ancient varieties, and fast food didn’t exist.  LOTS of good, natural fat like pastured butter (Haven’t you enjoyed that this past week??  Instead of vegetable oils and margarine fake fats??)  OH- note this: margarine was originally invented to lubricate machinery!  So, it’s kind of like spraying WD 40 down your throat...

Anyway, now you are walking, lubricating your joints, and just plain keeping the machinery of your body working!  What a concept; somehow we have forgotten just how important it is to simply MOVE.  That’s how most folks end up in nursing homes- they have just stopped moving, and before long they cannot move.  So keep moving, son!
Turn Around!!! Back to the future!

I touched on sleep last week, but I want to reiterate its importance here again, and want you to get 8 to 9 hours of sleep all this entire week!  Most people get far less than that, and have no idea how good you can feel when you just sleep enough!  Black out your bedroom if there are lights outside at night, get the tv out of the bedroom as well- the bedroom is not a recreation place- it is a sacred sleeping spot, where you will spend a good, restful, restorative 1/3 of your life; getting into that all-important dream state where our minds resolve most of our issues in life, if we only give our subconscious the time and sleep state that it needs.  Mental problems are inevitable for sleep deprivation, just as physical problems like diabesity, cancer and heart problems are inevitable for nutrient deprivation, which is another name for the S.A.D. Standard American Diet!
So, this week especially, concentrate on walking and sleeping, along with your upgraded Ancestral diet.

There is one other thing I would suggest you begin this week as well, on your Paleo Journey back to the future part 2- do light stretching and mobility work immediately upon  waking in the morning.  I don’t mean stretch and hold static stretching- I mean just reaching up as high as you can with either arm, stretching out first thing!  Then, roll your head on your neck, several times 360 degrees in each direction, then work your way through each joint of your body- after your neck, rotate your wrists and elbows each direction, then arm circles with outstretched palms for the shoulder joints, again both ways.  The point is not to WORK so much as it is to gradually lubricate and awaken your body and limbs, slowly and methodically... Next, twist at the waist to facing left, then right several times, do a 1/4 of the way down squat several times.  Stand next on one foot, and spin your other foot at the ankle both ways.  This is the most natural, best way to wake up in the world!  Just this little bit of morning “constitutional” will do so much to prepare your body for the day, and it just plain feels really, really good!

Watch any other animal waking up, especially a cat, and you will realize the modern human practice of just stumbling up out of bed and getting going with no preparation is crazy wrong!  Trust me, start doing this each morning, for just a couple of minutes, and you will be doing more for your bodily health than running a 10K, by far!

After all, you want to be a Paleo Marty McFly, don’t you?  Agilely leaping on your skateboard like a cat, while bulky, stiff Biff, who never did his agility exercises, runs into the back of a manure truck?  

Of course you do!
