Don't Take Statins- Eat Sardines Instead!

I know, that sounds a bit strange, to say the least- give up an incredibly popular and overprescribed drug  and eat a small fish instead- what??

My point is this: the modern, 1970’s based medical establishment, which is totally drug based, has been enlisted to force feed us all lots of statins and other drugs, and for what?  PROFIT.  That is the bottom line!

Profits from statin drugs are approaching 1 TRILLION dollars.  It is the most profitable of all drugs sold, and so is being pushed beyond belief by their salesmen and women: doctors and the profit driven clinics they work for!

Just like high blood pressure guidelines, which were recently lowered to a point where virtually everyone, including healthy teenagers are now diagnosed with “high blood pressure”, (and so need to be prescribed medications sold by the big drug companies and the doctors)- so too cholesterol guidelines have also recently been lowered!  What a surprise: now everyone needs statin drugs as well!  Including teenagers, but especially anyone older than, oh, 30 or so….

What a load of crap!  No one would accept this obvious used-car salesmanship technique, unless you’ve been brainwashed into believing that anyone who is a medical doctor is kind of close to godhood, and knows such arcane knowledge unattainable to all of the rest of us that he knows we need these drugs!

The ones he has for sale.  Or else you will be irresponsible, and die…

Not one word about changing your diet and lifestyle, about getting out into nature and destressing on a daily basis- about eating a grain free, paleo diet with loads of vegetables and severely limiting sugars.  About daily exercise, Perfectly Paleo natural exercise, along with walking barefoot and stretching.  Nope- DRUGS are the ANSWER!!

Just ask Elvis.  Drugs- ‘better living through chemistry’- sure worked out well for him!  He died at 42, and he had a profound respect for M.D.’s and their knowledge and prescriptions.  His own personal doctor, kept on staff for him, was Dr. Nick. When Elvis died at age 42, he was on a strict regimen of pharmaceutical drugs prescribed by his doctor!  Very responsible, however: the drugs he was prescribed were the cause of his dying at the age of 42.

Elvis followed the medical advice of his day.  This was 1977, probably the year when most of your current doctors got their diplomas… They were only following the science of their time, and the same ‘science’ that most doctors go by today.  Lots of drugs, diet doesn’t matter, just avoid fat and eat lots of carbs…

This is the lifestyle that killed Elvis Presley at the age of 42!  Do you really want to continue with that failed advice, here 41 years into the future, a future that had rediscovered the ancestral, or Paleo diet, and the wisdom and Weston Price?  The far more current science that supports this ancestral knowledge, and that would recommend eating a real foods diet, complete with wild caught, head-to-tail seafood like sardines, rather than popping statin pills that enrich the medical clinics, but leave you sicker and in pain?  Really, is that what you want, Elvis the second??

I love Elvis Presley’s music, mostly the early stuff when he was young, undrugged, and living a blue collar, healthy lifestyle of physical exertion.  That was his heritage, but he gave it up by listening to the medical doctors.

Don’t you be the same!  Treat yourself: eat sardines instead of statins.  Throw their prescriptions out the window, and consume real, healthy foods instead of drugs!  Go in the sunshine, don’t use sunscreen, and exercise naturally- not endless cardio for hundreds of miles, but doing pushups and self-resisted movements; things that build real muscle along with healthy flexibility!

Concentrate on building your gut microbiome, those gut bugs that make us healthy and that are killed by drugs and horrible herbicides like Roundup!  Avoid grains, and keep your carbs low overall, and make an effort to get fermented foods like Kefir and yogurt with viable cultures into your diet- naturally fermented pickles and sauerkraut!  It’s really not that complicated, you just need to ask your grandmother or grandfather.

But, if they are no longer available to you- well, just ask me: PaleoJay-  I can be your 66 year old virtual grandfather!!

Do NOT Eat Vegetable Oils!

One place that folks who strive to eat healthy fall down at is in their consumption of vegetable oils- corn, soy, canola- the list goes on, and they are all basically really bad.  The big one I notice is margarine, which is actually worse than just the fake oil it is made from, since the hydrogenation process it undergoes to make it solid loads it up with trans-fats, which are the worst fake fat of all!

Outdated fake science from decades ago assured us that vegetable oils, such as Crisco, which is made of cottonseed oil, for God’s sake!- is really healthy for us, because it wasn’t loaded with cholesterol.  Well, it’s not healthy for us, not at all!  Vegetable oils of all sorts are now eaten in huge amounts, mainly because (drumroll!) they are cheap.  So all makers of crappy processed foods like cakes and pies and other really junky foods load them up with these fake fats.

But what do vegetable oils, or as I more accurately like to call them- industrial seed oils- do to your body?

These fake, unstable fats replace real, healthy fats in your body.  Fats that used to come to us in the form of butter, coconut oil, beef tallow and the like- animal fats and oils from nuts or seeds that were edible, like olive oil, avocado oil, macadamia nut oil- all of these are fantastic sources of nutrients like vitamin A, and tend to be very anti-inflammatory and even preventive of both heart disease and cancer!  (That’s right, just the opposite of what we were all told in the 1970’s that it was real FAT that caused heart disease, despite the scientific facts that actually tell the opposite story)!

The fats in vegetable oils are all Omega 6 fats that are highly inflammatory.  In addition, when you eat vegetable oils instead of fats, that is what your body uses to rebuild your cells.  In a recent mouse study, when mice were fed vegetable oils, they incorporated these fats when rebuilding their skin cells.  The result was rampant skin cancer, while a control group of mice who were fed real fats were fine.  When the diets were reversed for each group of mice, the control group developed skin cancers, while the original group began to heal.

The point to take home is that we are natural beings that evolved to consume natural foods made by God, that supplies all that our bodies have been created to use in maintaining our health.  Cheap man made, fake fats in factories do not supply what our bodies need!  This should really come as no surprise, if you just think it through.

Here is the bottom line, not just in this fat controversy, but in anything that comes up in terms of health:  we should only eat things that occur in nature, as close to their original source as possible!  Things like grass fed dairy and beef (cows evolved to eat grass, not grains!), wild caught seafood (not farmed, where fish are fed unhealthy grains just as are ruminants on land).    Simple fats, processed without need of noxious chemicals and huge machinery; fats like coconut oil, butter, olive oil and ghee.

God made fats, and all other foods as well- natural and not over processed!  Nutrition and health are much simpler than they are usually made out to be, and really are pretty much common sense.  Real foods are pretty much all good, I mean even ancient varieties of grains are far healthier and less damaging than modern, GMO and irradiated varieties of wheat and other grains.

My one rule of thumb is this: the more a food has been processed, engineered, and just plain messed with- well, you can be sure that it is not fit to eat.

Get Healthy and Strong by NOT going to the Gym!

For many, many years I went to gyms.  I lifted weights at the YMCA, and ran on the streets.  I also did some stretching, but it was kind of hit and miss.  Those were my younger days…

Now, I am in my 66th year, and I have learned a lot since I started seriously working out in my 20’s!  In the beginning, I followed the bodybuilding advice of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Frank Zane.  Actually, Frank Zane still had what I consider the ideal physique- not huge, buy very symmetrical.  Even today, in his 70’s, he looks great!  Arnold, well, not so much…

Frank now works out in his own home gym, which is what I have done for the past 30 some years or so.  I found that my workouts were much more intense when done on my own, in my basement- there were no distractions, and I could do them before work in the early AM.  But my physique, while quite strong, had some shortcomings that just got more and more evident over time:

My butt and gut, from heavy squatting, got big- too big!  Sure, my thighs got bigger too, but they were overshadowed by my butt.  And, despite endless leg raises from a bar, along with other resisted ab exercises, my gut stuck out.  In addition, heavy benching actually made my chest too prominent.  I switched to incline presses, which helped that a lot, but my shoulders hurt most of the time, and so did my knees (from the squatting).  Also, the running took a toll on my body as well, with knees, feet, and hips taking a pounding on a regular basis.

I gradually started to transition in my 50’s to what I practice today, and now have learned how to exercise in what I have found to be a very productive, satisfying, and above all a completely home-based manner!  I read about body weight exercise, both calisthenics and self-resisted types of exercises, and started to substitute them in more and more.  And I read on a web page called www.transformetrics.com by a fellow named John Peterson about what he called the ‘Tiger Moves’, which I prefer to call Virtual Resistance Exercise, since the resistance is generated from within the muscle itself, as it moves through a full range of motion.  This last was the key to mastering the bodily physique and to maximize health in an efficient, and very safe manner.

Not only that, but I can do the majority of the work in my living room, with a minimum of equipment, while I watch television!

Think about that: instead of going downstairs to my dingy basement, which while it has a power rack and lots of equipment and weights, is still- a dingy, concrete and part dirt floor basement!  Now, I watch Netflix programs while I methodically work through my whole body.  And, while I certainly push hard, doing high volumes of leg-elevated pushups and straight-backed sit ups on my yoga mat on the floor, I never hurt my joints at all!

I come down first thing in the morning (that time works the best for almost everyone), and while the sun is peeking up over the horizon through my living room window,  I start into taxing my musculature.  I know exactly my routine, since it covers every muscle in my body, including my neck, wrists, and even fingers in a time-efficient and very satisfying manner.

After doing the Virtual Resistance exercises over my whole body, from shoulders and arms, legs and chest down to the biceps, I go to the floor and do a series of stretches, mixed with mobility for my ankles and wrists, and even foot massage.  Then, I go to isometrics.  For whatever reason, this type of exercise has become so maligned over the years that it is pretty much dismissed by most.  That is very sad, for isometrics are the single most efficient means of building raw strength throughout the body with a very minimal expense of time!

I use a nylon strap, a moving strap actually, that will resist thousands of pounds of pressure.  The expense is very minimal; actually, I already had mine when I started, so the expense was zero- perhaps you have a towing strap lying around.  If not, they are quite inexpensive- a strap of about 25 feet is perfect.

Set it on the floor, stepping in the middle with both feet.  Then, you can do military presses, upright rows, curls, shoulder extensions, bent rows and squats, one right after another!  I like to do say the military press at shoulder height with both hands, pressing nearly as hard as I can for about 6 seconds, then after a pause to rest 7 seconds, and finally for 8 seconds or longer.  I repeat this at the midpoint of the ‘lift’, and then at the endpoint  And that is it for the shoulder press!  Total time spent, maybe couple of minutes…

Then, I go to curls, using the same protocol, then shoulder extensions, bent over row, upright row, and squats.  I finish up with the ‘bench press’ by holding the strap behind my back, and pressing out first close to my chest, then half-way out, and then near complete extension.  Same protocol as before, making my isometric portion of the workout complete at maybe 10 minutes or so, tops.  And my strength musculature is maxed out!

Finally, I will do rebounding, meaning bouncing on a rebounder as I do the first Virtual Resistance portions through two more cycles, starting at the midpoint, and for the final cycle of exercises at the endpoint.  This covers every fact of training, from cardio to bodybuilding to one-shot strength- all in a modest investment of time, say 30 to 45 minutes total.

The main point is that this is not onerous exercise, meaning something brutal, that you only want to get through to get it done- not at all!  This way of exercising is like moving meditation- kind of relaxing, despite being strenuous in a not overwhelming way.  When you are done, you don’t feel like falling down or puking; no- you feel great!  Like you’ve been scrubbed and massaged inside and out, and are maxed out in all fitness parameters, all right in your living room.  And, you’ve just seen a (hopefully) great show simultaneously!

Now, sometimes I substitute pushups instead of the rebounding, along with sit ups and hindu squats.  And sometimes I do them all- it depends on how I feel, and my available time.  Often, I will go heavy hands walking through the woods, barefoot this time of year, swinging the tiny weight (5 pounds seems ideal) for 15 minutes later in the day.

Or, I will go into my dingy basement, and do sets of pushups on my gymnastic rings suspended from the rafters!  This also goes very easily, since the rings make pushups completely comfortable, and infinitely gradable, from legs upraised pushups to flies standing almost upright.  I will finish up with rows from the rings, along with L-sits on them, along with some pistol squats (the rings make it easy to keep your balance and not harm your knee joints since you can lean well back), and even some isometric grip and reverse curl exercises in the power rack.

And this is how I exercise today.  I wish I had known this when I was 26, but at least I do know it now!  As do you.  Workouts not only do not need to be grueling, they are actually more productive if they are briefer, and less taxing of your body’s central nervous system!  Remember- workout hard, but with knowledge and care.

As in proper medicine so it is in exercise: above all, do not do harm.

Save your Teeth! (and don't get sick as well) on Paleo Quick tip of the Day

I have been experimenting with Xylitol for a while now, and while this low calorie sweetener is almost exactly like sugar when substituted for it, the results of it on the body are amazingly different!

For one: sugar is deadly to oral health!  Sugar in your mouth is tantamount to oral suicide, since sugar feeds the bad bacteria that causes tooth decay, and also results long term into periodontal disease, destroying your gums, which are the literal foundation that secures your teeth.  Xylitol actually increases the health of your teeth, since it ‘fools’ the bad bacteria into thinking that- “hey- here is wonderful sugar- let’s eat!”; but, when these bad bacteria consume this xylitol, they then suddenly realize that there is no sustenance here- it is a fake out!  And so, they starve and die, leaving your oral cavity undamaged!!

The same thing happens in the nasal cavity, it turns out!  I have been experimenting with xylitol recently, and have bought a product called Xclear, which is simply saline solution mixed with Xylitol.  At the first sign of a cold coming on, I have sprayed it into my nostrils, and waited…

Two times, when I thought a cold was coming on I used it- and in both situations, that cold was averted!  Easy Peasey.

But, yesterday, I had already come down with a cold- you know what it’s like: my head was so stuffed up I could barely speak, and I was miserable!  And I was scheduled to sing the next morning in church!

I sprayed the Xylitol solution into my nostrils, for two times, and went (early) to bed.  When I awoke the next morning- I was almost normal!  I sprayed one more time, took a shower, and sang- I was 100%; well, maybe 98%- but so much better.required
Church went amazingly this morning.  More importantly, I felt so well, that I cut down and moved two trees this afternoon!  I mean, how exciting is it that when, you think you are going to be bed-ridden for days- and you suddenly are perfectly all right!!??

And I also know that, when you bake anything, xylitol is pretty much a one on one substitute for sugar.  And the price is not much different as well, as long as you can find it.  (Online it is always available).

In Finland, I have read, Xylitol is a required candy or gum after meals, to ensure oral health!!  And so, it seems to be a total non-brainer, right?

Well, it is as far as it goes… but overall, I would relegate sweeteners to the “Sweet Bye and Bye”, overall.  (Which is a song we ran over today after church for later performance!)

ALL sweeteners are suspect!  They lead us into the “rat’s nest” of sugar sugar sugar, which is our nemesis as humans.

Use Xylitol as an herb- use it medicinally to treat incipient type 2 diabetes, or an addiction to sugars and carbs.  Use it to treat your oral cavity to save your teeth and gums!  But overall?

Cut sweeteners and their twins (carbs and breads) to the bone!

This alone will stop most health problems in this our modern era.  Eat real foods, sans grains and sugars, and when you do use sweeteners- use natural ones, like local honey, and maple syrup!

It really is that simple, for health both local and national: go local, and natural.

How to Live an Ancestral Life

All of us here are aspiring or existing Paleo People- or at least we should be!  We want to get in touch with nature, and live our lives in harmony with the natural world of health and wellness, eating real foods that are healthy and nutritious, and eliminating fake food like substances pushed upon us by the mainstream, like grains, sugars, and processed foods and sugary crap.

That is all a given.  We also want to spend time daily in a natural setting, sleep in a totally dark and relatively noise-free setting (like with crickets chirping, and only the moon and stars faintly visible overhead), and we want to vigorously yet naturally exercise on a daily basis.  We want relatively stress free jobs, and a community of like-minded folks that we enjoy seeing often around the streets and area in which we live.  Even to have people who look at the spiritual side of life is very important to us, since all of life is seamless, really, and everything should mesh if we hope to raise our family successfully, and to bond and mingle with our neighbors (and other tribespeople about us), in harmony.

And so what am I saying here?  How should we live; really, that is the bottom line- and where should we live??

I think that is the real crux of the matter- the where.  Europe nowadays is failing in a huge way, as they let in more, and more, and more migrants from what really are hostile tribes into their civilized, homogenous countries.  Western Europeans have lost religion largely, and so have no unifying principles anymore- nothing, at least, that they would die for.  Sweden, Britain, France and other western socialized democracies have no other rallying cry nowadays than to just “be nice”- and that is a recipe for disaster!

So, if you are in those countries under current really bad leadership, overall, I would say to protest vigorously!  In fact, with socialist liberal Trudeau in power in Canada, I’m afraid you are now in the same boat- protest!!  To live an ancestral, paleo type of life requires that you live amongst people in a tribe that are similar to you in values, lifestyle, and above all in IQ!!

I’m sure I lost half of my listeners there, but I stand by it- we are meant to live amongst those like us; anything else is madness and delusion.

So, if you don’t already, plan to move to a homogenous tribal community, where your neighbors are of your own race, especially if you have children.  They will need schooling, and that should be amongst others of their own kind, and intelligence- this is crucial, not only for them and you, but for Western Civilization.

If you are Asian, or black, I also recommend that you live in the most western, civilized area you can find!  REALLY!  If you are intelligent enough to recognize it, your best bet is to live in an area where most people have a high IQ.  Even if you are not as smart, you benefit by being in the proximity of those who produce, and just plain create a complex, western-type of civilization.    This is not even debatable- smart societies create wonderful, productive places with very low crime, and wonderful living conditions.  Other societies do not.

So, in the US, I would recommend RED states, states that voted in Trump.  Lower taxes, less government intrusion, and above all traditional western civilization is still prioritized.  At least for now!

Get in the most rural area you can, where you can still get a job!  (Jobs are very important- just make sure yours is real.  Not a fake managerial, affirmative action type of job- that way lies delusions of grandeur.  And I’m sorry, but most western medical jobs now fall into that category).    Get a real job, where you accomplish real, physical things preferably! Thinking jobs count, but they are even better when done “off the clock”, as a labor of love.  Like music is best done as a “hobby”, and visual art as well.

Spend most of your free time with your family.  Outside, in nature, with campfires and working your land.  Garden, and get a good tractor!  A small, compact, diesel tractor is the arguably most paleo implement of all time, since with it you can mow, till, rake, snowplow, and otherwise work your land as if you had a team of draft horses, only better!

And as you use this amazing engine, just remember that Rudolph Diesel is a fellow tribesman of Western Civilization!  His discovery has enhanced your own tribe, and so you should embrace it with pride.

Blood Pressure BS

Blood pressure, most importantly the notion of high blood pressure, is a long-running pool of misinformation and bad treatment.  The measurement of taking the blood pressure originated in 1905, and has not changed since then!  It was actually discovered in the 1880’s, but the final measuring system was finalized in 1905-

Hardly cutting edge science and medicine!

But the medical system has stuck with it all this time, and only tries to mask the symptoms of the high blood pressure with drugs, never trying to cure the underlying cause or causes.  The thought is that the high blood pressure is what is doing damage to arteries and the heart, when it is actually when there are abnormalities within the heart, arteries or kidneys that the body compensates- by increasing the blood pressure to better serve the circulatory system!

High or Low blood pressure is not in and of itself inherently bad or good: it is just a snapshot in time of how your blood pressure is at that moment of the day.  If you lift heavy weights, or run, of course your blood pressure goes up- a LOT!  This is just the body doing what it does to keep you flexible and alive as you go about on this planet.  Completely natural.

If you take drugs to artificially lower your blood pressure, you are doing absolutely nothing to correct the underlying cause of your high blood pressure (If indeed you even have it), you are merely making the blood pressure stay low.  So low, that it cannot help compensate for any problem in your circulatory system that makes a higher pressure healthy and necessary for you.

It’s as if a fireman is spraying water at a high rate at a fire in your body to keep it down.  Enter modern medicine- and a blood pressure drug will throttle back the fire hose (your blood pressure), and your body cannot do what it needs to.  It’s a case of blaming the fireman for the fire he is trying to put out and control!

You need to let the blood pressure do its therapeutic thing, and try to heal your body from the inside out by eating a wonderful, nutrient dense diet of vegetable smoothies, while eliminating sugars and grains.  By exercising and getting good sleep, meditating and getting out into nature!  By cultivating your tribe of friends and family.  And by stretching your body methodically each day, invigorating your spine and nervous system!

Did you know that to accurately even take a blood pressure reading, you are supposed to sit quietly for at least 10 minutes in a darkened room first?  And that this should be repeated several times throughout the day to gain an accurate reading, which should be an average of all of those very relaxed, very quiet moments??

Is that how your blood pressure is taken?  That’s right- NO.  You come in, sit down (often after having driven over in a rush, and maybe even jogged into the clinic so as not to be late.  (I know I did that once, when I was giving blood).

The nurse slapped that cuff around my wrist (I had actually jogged up two flights of stairs to the appointment), and started in immediately.  I mentioned I had run up the stairs.  “Sure you did,” she said.

You know what?  My blood pressure was a little high that time.  But that was many years ago, when I didn’t know about blood pressure BS.

You probably heard that the AHA and other soothsayers of modern medicine recently lowered the blood pressure guidelines from 140 over 90, where it had been for many decades to… 120 over 80!  This means that roughly 1/2 of all adults in the US should be on blood pressure medications, according to these same soothsayers and necromancers.  Once again, BS.  Methinks that the Pharmaceutical companies are drumming up more business for these drugs, and that is that!

Just as in cholesterol measurement and statin drug treatments, modern medicine is proving once again that it is not currently based on the latest research and science, far from it.  They still recommend low fat diets, and vegetable oils for health, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, among many other antiquated notions from the 1970’s and 80’s.

Don’t fall for it!  Live an ancestral lifestyle, eat a paleo type of diet full of nutrient dense pastured meats and dairy, along with wild caught seafood.  Have a green, paleo smoothie each day, and exercise ala Perfectly Paleo Exercise.  Pretend you live long, long before 1905, long before alchemists and sorcerers came up with magical measurements that don’t really predict anything other than their own bank accounts getting bigger!

Go natural, clean, and ancestral- go Paleo!

Make Every Day Perfect!

Now I know- all you hear about lately is Keto this and Keto that; not nearly as much paleo as was the case a few years ago!  That’s typical- people are rather faddish, all following the latest trend, and abandoning something else- even if it was working wonderfully for them!

But, far more commonly, they jump on the next bandwagon, before ever really committing to, and following the last one they were planning to adopt!  But, just to be on the record, for most folks The Paleo Diet, (often with slight adaptations like adding in pastured dairy, some legumes and potatoes) is the way to go.  I believe the ketogenic diet has huge potential for some folks- primarily those who already have autoimmune disease, and/or are otherwise severely damaged, health wise.  For them, keto living can be very therapeutic.  But, for the rest of us, an ongoing commitment to a paleo lifestyle, eschewing bread and grains, severely limiting sugar, and keeping the carbs on the low end overall is the way to go.  It is the way to achieve a great, healthy life!

And that is what I’d like to talk about today- making each and every day in your life a Perfectly Paleo Day!  No day can be absolutely perfect, but if you plan, and have a template that you use regularly to outline your days, well most days turn out pretty darn good!

The first thing to do is to make sure to get to bed early the night before!  It seems too obvious to say, but most folks nowadays do not get to bed early- ever!  It is just too tempting to stay up, watch tv, go on the computer and otherwise have your eyes blasted with blue light, throwing off your circadian rhythms until after awhile, your body doesn’t know day from night, and sleep eludes you!  This is bad, and probably worse than you think:

Sleep is not only important to your health, it is crucial!  Sleep is also majorly determinant in how you feel.  If you do not get adequate sleep, and by that I mean at LEAST 8 hours per night, each and every night, you are not going to feel good, vibrant and healthy!  And believe me: that is how we are designed to feel.  We are supposed to feel great the vast majority of our lives, and it is tragic that so many almost never do.  So, be sure to take care of the sleep quotient first, in your quest for wonderful, happy daily living.

Make sure you have things that you enjoy doing- hobbies or interests that you find interesting and compelling.  It really doesn’t matter what they are, as long as they are not harmful to you.  Exercise is one, but actually is not a hobby per se- exercise is a necessity, just like sleeping.  Just make sure that it is natural, as outlined in my ebook Perfectly Paleo Exercise, and also on my blog at www.paleojay.com.   It shouldn’t really be a chore- it should just be how you wake up each day!  Pleasant, working out the kinks.  In front of the TV is best for most, on a mat, methodically improving each limb of your body, and your core, by flexing them throughout their full range of motion (virtual resistance exercise, or Mc Sweeny’s Tiger Moves is another name).  Then, get on the floor and stretch, limbering your whole body.  This only gets more and more important as you age!  STRETCH DAILY!

You can start at 15 minutes, and over time work up to 45 minutes to an hour- each and every day that you can.  The key is getting to bed early!  After a good 8 hours of sleep, getting up is no chore, and neither is exercise- for me, it is MY time, the high point of my day!  I am immersed in a movie usually, and with Netflix and Amazon Prime videos, there is always something that you will want to watch.  Keep your watching restricted to when you exercise- tie them together, not watching when you aren’t exercising!  (Avoid “binge watching”- it’s stupid and counterproductive if you desire Perfect Days.)

My hobbies run towards music, reading, outdoor work on my land like gardening, mowing, clearing paths, and maintaining my woods.  I love anything outdoors, and I believe this is an ancestral thing that can be very valuable for anyone.  I also have old vehicles, and enjoy working on them as well.  For you,  it really doesn’t matter what you love- art, photography, painting, sewing, quilting, flower arranging and growing- I mean, the list of interests are endless, and all are equally valuable- just immerse yourself in what you love, and you are fulfilling your purpose.  You will become your self-determined, autonomous self!

So- for a Perfect Day, you want to aim to include a slice of all of your interests into each and every day, if you can!  So, you can, before work, exercise.  After showering, prepare your breakfast for the family, and your own lunch(es) to take to work with you.  (Bringing your own lunch is almost mandatory- fast food is like a nightmare in most cases, and eating your own healthy, paleo fare is key to being happy and healthy).  And now, there are even crock pots and lunch boxes that cook your food as you go!  Really- you just put in, say, a chicken breast, a bit of rice and a vegetable- all raw- and they are cooked either in your vehicle via the electric connection there, or at your place of work, in time for lunch!  You just need to plan ahead, just like going to bed early…

So- you go off to work, well fortified with a great breakfast, a paleo breakfast like eggs and bacon and maybe a salad- and you have a nutritious lunch in your lunch box to look forward to as well.  You are exercised, and feel like you are glowing with health; relaxed and happy.  This is going to be a happy, productive day!

Your work day will go well, trust me.  When you are feeling great, you are at your most personable and relaxed, which will make your work go very well indeed.  People love to be around, and do business with, those who are confident, healthy, relaxed and fit.  It’s instinctual.  Think about it: would you want to interact with someone who is obviously unhealthy, with a pallor instead of glow of health?  Someone who is yawning, and appears to be on the verge of getting sick, and in a continual bad mood?  No…

And you have after work to look forward to!  When you are done with work, you can do what you want to!

I have already eliminated watching TV- you did that this morning, remember?  AS you exercised!  NOW, you need to get outside- get out into nature, my friend!  I like to go swinging ‘Heavyhands’ weights in my woods, for 10 - 15 minutes is really all you need- it is a great mini-workout that gets the whole body going- PLUS, you are outside in nature. (This is crucial for health, we all need to have a dose of nature on a daily, or at least near-daily basis.)

After that, you may want to grill your supper for the family on your Weber charcoal grill, as I do.  This is an enjoyable, paleo-type of task that is a time for contemplation as well.  Again, something to look forward to!

After supper, you are FREE!  No TV to watch, you can indulge in your hobbies and interests.  I like to include most of my hobbies on a daily basis, at least usually.   Garden awhile, or read a book.  Go to www.paleojay.com to research exercise techniques, or elsewhere to look into subjects that interest you.  The computer is really great for research on medical, political, and really any subject- just keep it on real subjects, not facebook nonsense or that type of thing- those, along with TV, are just big Time Sucks.  BAD.

So, be like me if so inclined- play guitar and sing!  Write!  (tonight I am writing this).  Call your mother on Facetime.  Sit outside on the porch and wave at the neighbors walking by!  (I hope you live in such a rural, small town sort of community- this too is something to strive for.  Big Cities and even suburbs tend to be Anti Paleo these days, with crime and just plain too many people!)

And so, you get the idea: Live a Good Life!  That is the takeaway, really.  By doing what is best, by ignoring what is a waste- most television, staying up late to watch it, and concentrating on what is good and necessary, you will improve your own life to the maximum, along with that of your family, your neighborhood, and ultimately all of society!

It has reached a point in the West, which is the ‘fount of all good things of civilization’, that the LEFT has veered off sharply, into revealing themselves as what they truly are: The USEFUL IDIOTS OF Marxism, and socialism/communism.  If you lead perfect, ancestral days, immersing yourself in the good, you will be immune to this toxic anti-thought form.

And so, as some of your interests, you can watch YouTubes of Jordan Peterson, Stefan Molyneaux, and others, and so educate yourself as to what is really happening in society, and what works and doesn’t in political thought.  So, after you’ve indulged your other interests, watch a couple of their videos.  Think about it, and discuss it with your spouse…

And then, go to bed.  Early!  Tomorrow is another perfect day.

Black Nights Matter!

This is the true iteration of this endless plea, and is one that actually makes sense!  Black Lives Matter means very little indeed.  But Black Nights Matter- well, this is important stuff.

If you are sleeping in a room with windows that let light into your bedroom, you probably have no idea that this is one of the most pernicious things that you can do to your health.  For hundreds of millions of years, our ancestors have had light only within the window provided by nature- from dawn til dusk!

But now, mostly within the past few decades, and increasingly since we started staring at screens, computer, phone, and tablet- all emitting tons of blue light- with is the light that is supposed to jar us awake in the morning- we are subjected to this stimulus not only in what is supposed to be waking hours- but late into the night as well!

Many people have taken this still further, setting their TV’s on timers, so they fall asleep to the blue light emitter that is tv, as their body is attempting to fall asleep.  Talk about upsetting the circadian rhythms!!  Just imagine how upsetting, how confusing this is to our inner ‘clock’, something that has been inviolate since before the time of Christ.  Our health, overall, can only suffer in a huge way.

Some of the most serious potential problems associated with chronic sleep deprivation are high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure or stroke. ... Chronic sleep deprivation can even affect your appearance. Over time, it can lead to premature wrinkling and dark circles under the eyes.   If sleep deprivation goes on long enough, for perhaps a couple of weeks: the result is death.  After only 48 hours your body goes into ‘micro-sleeps’, where it sleeps despite your best efforts, even while you try to remain awake.  (You’re not, really, for stretches where you might appear to be).

The bottom line is this: if you are staying up late at night, watching TV or your computer or phone, you probably are feeling virtuous- “Hey- I’m getting all of this work done!”

You’re not.  You are screwing yourself out of health, just as much as if you skipped exercise or eating well!  More, actually!  Sleep is crucial to health and wellness- not to mention fitness.  You need a regular schedule of good nights of sleep, as much as scheduled exercise, or good daily nutrition!

I hope you realize at this point that the whole point of ‘Black Lives Matter’ is a political stunt- nothing to pay any attention to at all, if you are a thinking, rational person- it is pure propaganda of the basest source.  It just made a good headline!  And probably, if those fake ‘leaders’ who so espoused this ‘movement’ would get enough good sleep, they would realize how nonsensical their points really were.

But my own point is nonetheless perfectly valid and important:

Get good sleep!  Every night- black out your windows with curtains, get to bed early, and try to maintain this, day after day- get to bed early, get up early!

So much of the Paleo Prescription is just good-old grandmotherly advice: get up early- exercise every morning, eat a big breakfast, a big lunch and a light supper.  Spend time with your family in the evenings, ala ‘Little House on the Prairie’- play fiddle or other music, sing and dance, and otherwise connect with your family and tribe!   Pretend you live in the wonderfully successful Small Town Americana that has been so unfortunately discarded and denigrated by the Left.

Paleo Life was enshrined in Small Town Living of the early 20th century.  It was ancestral in so many ways, and when that lifestyle was discarded in favor of ‘modernism’, America lost her heart and soul!  Norman Rockwell was thrown on the trash heap as outdated, and racist…

This was the discarding- orchestrated by the evil, socialist, Marxist LEFT: a planned outcome, one that not only cast aside the proven ideals and ethics of Conservatism- but also threw aside the proven maxims of tribal living, like:

Monogamy
Two Parent Families
Self- Sufficiency
Tribal (Local) Government, not BIG Government
Health and Wellness done within the FAMILY, not in Big Medicine environments

I  could go on, and on, for a long, long time.  But for that, you need to listen to all of my podcasts!

Just remember now that, you need to sleep 8 hours each night!  After that, diet and lifestyle matter- but not until you understand that :

Black Nights Matter!!

Keto is NOT the Ultimate Goal

I am getting a little confused by the paleo community all seemingly running like lemmings into the land of Ketosis!  As if, all of a sudden, the goal of ancestral living is to just get to ketosis, stay in ketosis, and glory in ketosis…

Getting into a ketogenic state is important- it is one tool in our paleo health toolbox.  I don’t deny this.  But to go on and on and on about KETO, and never mention the other essential parts of healthy ancestral living, well, it’s like cutting off your nose to spite your face.  It’s like when, early on, all that was talked about seemed to be crossfit.  Just like the Keto craze, this made Crossfit the centerpiece of paleo exercise (it never was for me), and the extremes people started to take it became dangerous.  It just became a form of organized overtraining, and a sure way to get injured, and burn out ultimately.

Ketosis is a therapeutic tool, primarily, and should be used sometimes, but that is all.  Some may need to use it more extensively, since they are more damaged than most- but ideally we want to get to a point where we dip in and out of ketosis, not just stay there since it’s ‘better’.  It’s not, it’s just one form of fuel we need to be able to use if we want to be healthy and happy.

Just as important to my mind as going into ketosis is to consume enough healthy superfoods!  Greens, veggies of many sorts, sardines and other wild caught seafood, good pastured fats- it’s actually hard to get enough of many highly nutrient dense foodstuffs when eating in such a manner as to keep us keto.  Some carbs are good for our precious gut biome, (remember that)?- and it is a good thing to be able to metabolize things like some beans and tubers on occasion.

Also, thinking endlessly of Keto, it is easy to become obsessed with it (just like Crossfit), and to become literally afraid of foods!  “Oh no- if I eat that apple it will take me out of ketosis!”  That sort of thinking.  And this way lies madness.

I think it’s time to go back to the old Paleo description, with all of the attendant things that go along with that paradigm.  Wild caught seafood, pastured meats, eggs and high fat dairy.  Vegetables, some fruits, and nuts in moderation.  Checking blood levels for sugar and insulin levels can become crazy obsessive really quickly, and concentrating on fats to the exclusion of most other sorts of good, healthy foods can leave us under nutrified.  (I just invented a word!)

Besides- it everything goes Keto, I would have to change my moniker from PaleoJay to KetoJay, and I don’t see that happening.  Same with CrossfitJay, especially since I kind of hate Crossfit, and what it has become.  In fact, every time something becomes a fad- it’s time to step back and reassess.

Oh gosh- I have to go now- l just got an alarm on my iphone that it’s time to take my keto esters -gotta go!

Natural Hobbies for Natural Health

Let’s say you want to be healthy- a healthy, paleo type of a person!  You clean up your diet, substituting good fats and pastured proteins for your processed carbs and sugary stuff.  You start to exercise, and use body weight movements instead of machines and weights, and start walking and sprinting barefoot instead of jogging long, slow distances in heavily cushioned running shoes.

If you are doing these things, I guarantee you are now far more fit and healthy than before- congratulations!  If you also meditate or pray on a daily basis, and drink a paleo green smoothie as well; why, you are not only healthy, you are (or are becoming) one of the most healthy and fit people on the planet!  Congratulations!!

Now, you can just watch televisions endlessly in your free time, or perhaps crochet and start concentrating on your collection of Hummel figurines…

Well, NO.  Your total lifestyle needs to be in sync; that is, to be a lifestyle that makes sense, a way of living that embodies the real values of a person grounded in the reality of the paleolithic, or at least in the real values of necessary and desirable things, not just trivialities.

What brought this to mind it the time of year: tomorrow, I will start my maple sap collecting, and then boiling down into syrup!  Each phase of life should be centered around what is truly important, and necessary for life.  This week, the snow is almost gone, and though the wet mud is still all to prevalent, it must be braved!  For the maple trees are ready- they cannot wait.  When it is still below freezing at night, and gets into the high 30’s and 40’s in the daytime; why, that is when the syrup runs.  And so, it means I need to run as well, through the mud and back again, drilling small holes into my trees, putting in the spiles, connecting the tubing, and otherwise setting the stage for the sap to run into collection buckets.

After a bit, I’ll need to start a wood fire, upon which I place a big pot or two of sap, which I keep filled as it boils down, lower and lower as the water vapor boils away, and the sap gradually thickens more and more into the dark, potent brew we call maple syrup.  A sweetener, like raw honey, that is far from just a sugar- it is a sweetener with many other compounds within it that benefit our health.  For instance- did you realize that maple syrup has an anti-oxidant cocktail of beneficial compounds: it has some that are found in tea, and some that are found in flaxseed?  For a sweetener, it is very healthy indeed.

For me, maple tapping not only gets me out into the early sunlight of spring (at last!), and into building a big fire to keep going all day long; it also gets me out into the woods, back in touch with nature!  For, although I walk in the woods all winter long, even when ski poles are the only thing that help me to stay upright on the ice, when I’m out in the spring I hear the awakening sounds of nature all about me.  Birds, small animals, deer, and even carnivores are stirring all around, reminding me that I am but a part of all of them.

Often, I will find myself automatically feeding sticks and logs beneath my fire, while replenishing the sap in the cook pot- but my main attention is on the woods and environment around me.  The tending of the roaring fire, and the continual pouring of sap and then replacement of the buckets is automatic.  A background activity that keeps me in place in the woods.  It makes me a part of nature itself.

Before I know it, it will be time for lunch, and I will go up to the house to eat.  But all too soon, I will know the drip buckets are full, and the fire is getting low- so I will add more sap to the cook pot, and add more logs to the fire.  The process is not too arduous- it is all just about right- enough to keep me working and busy, but not so much that I can’t stop often to appreciate all that is about me.  This will go on all day…

And for the next few days, probably all week.  And I realize now, as I write this, that although it takes up my days at this time of year, that I look forward to it all winter long!  The first sign of spring!  A moment when I can get outside without being burdened by heavy clothing, when I can smell the vegetation once again in the mud, as the soil reawakens once again with LIFE.  When life once again becomes infused with something fecund, something sweet, not just the endless sterility of winter.

Just as gardening is rejuvenative later on; maple sapping gives me a jump start!  These natural hobbies are as important to me, and my sense of place in the world, as my very health.  And, quite honestly: without them- I would have no true health- not at all!  I would be cut off from nature, purposeless, like a nursing home resident confined to a bed, or an office worker who only watched TV after work and ate TV dinners.

Thank God for the work of tapping trees outside tomorrow!

Reverse Osteoporosis with Dried Plums

That’s prunes- that of course is what a dried plum is!  And recent studies have shown that prunes have amazing health benefits, and also taste really good.

But the big news is that you can actually reverse osteoporosis within your bones by consuming prunes.  It has been thought that once the bones lose minerals, they cannot be regained.  Thus, people as they age, in particular women, but in men was well, gradually lose bone structure.  This sets you up for weak, easily breakable bones, and steadily weakening teeth as well.  Lose mineral structure in your spine, and you are looking at a lot of pain and disability- fall and break a hip; why many people never recover from that and become bedridden as a result.

The prune (it has been rebranded as a ‘dried plum’ for marketing purposes), has a unique chemical property that can actually reverse this bone loss, so you body can lay down bone minerals that have already been lost!  This is huge, and alone makes including prunes in your diet on a regular basis a very smart practice.

But, there is more- prunes, or dried plums as I’m sure you’ll call them from now on, also have the most antioxidants of any fruit!  And how important are antioxidants?  Antioxidants – defend our body against the damaging effects of free radicals.  It is now known that free radicals are associated with as many as 60 different diseases including heart disease, many forms for cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, arthritis, stroke, allergies, chronic fatigue and aging in general.

So, save and strengthen your bones, while at the same time defending yourself against a plethora of diseases.  Eat prunes- if you’re like me, you love the taste, but you kind of forget about these dried little fruits when shopping by being distracted by the sexier types- the pineapples, the mangos, grapes, figs- whatever.  But now you know-

Don’t be dumb, choose a dried plum!
