Paleo Diet is Dead- Long Live the Paleo Diet! podcast

 

Ok- the paleo diet was ground breaking in every way!  It was actually started by a man named Walter Voegtlin, who was a gastroenterologist.  He called it the ‘Stone Age Diet’, a diet that eliminated most all foods that came after the agricultural revolution approximately 10,000 years ago.


After him, Loren Cordain is the one who revived it around 2005.  This is when I discovered it, and even wrote to Cordain about a health problem of my wife, and he graciously responded.  We adopted his diet, and her health problem resolved completely, and quickly!  That is when PaleoJay was born…


Other Paleo gurus emerged, all of which had a lot to offer in different ways.  As in most other things, the approach evolved as more was discovered.  Trial and error, along with lots of research, caused the theory to evolve.  The one thing that remained constant was the ever-present knowledge, revealed by archeological records, that health and overall wellness had been far better for ancient humans when they consumed an evolutionarily correct diet: only sourdough and otherwise processed grains allowed, if consumed at all, in minimal amounts.  The same with sweeteners like sugar, which were largely unknown to our ancestors.


My health, and that of my family, improved dramatically from around 2005 to today.  My body fat dropped quickly, which revealed my long-exercising body that was buried beneath it.  My migraine headaches went away quickly and completely,    and I largely stopped cardio or ‘aerobic’ types of training for long periods, going only for sprints or ‘heavy hands’ walking while swinging dumbbells energetically.    I worked way more on flexibility, and began running and walking barefoot- voila- my feet problems also disappeared!


Robb Wolf, Loren Cordain’s student, emerged as a guru, and led lots of folks on the evolving path of paleo.  Chris Kresser was a voice of reason throughout, as were Beverly Meyer and Mark Sisson.  I took ideas from each one, tested them in my own life, and either kept or discarded them as I learned and experienced more.  Jimmy Moore was a voice of cheerful reason, and his many, many guests kept me informed and enlightened over the years, primarily about proper nutrition.


But my ideas about exercise also continually kept evolving, with the lifting of really heavy weights being revealed as problematic, and unnecessary, just as had aerobics and cardio earlier on.  The importance of sleep kept rearing its head, as did ancillary practices like forest bathing and the importance of sunlight  and then true darkness to maintain our circadian rhythm.


A couple of years ago or so, the term Paleo itself kind of disappeared!  Now, magazines at the supermarket checkout and the new bestseller books were all about KETO.  It was very similar to paleo, but instead of being about a totality of lifestyle being reached through diet and other practices- now it was just consume lots and lots of fat!  This, coupled with zero carbs, resulted in fast fat loss; and it appears that, overall: this is basically all the majority of people care about.


Keto is, therefore, very one dimensional; focussing on fat loss almost entirely.  It is really more, to me, of a therapeutic, short term view of how to live.  If you force your body to live off of ketones, of basically FAT, you become, as Mark Sisson puts it: a fat burner.  So, your body is running off of the cleanest fuel it can.  This way, it can avoid seizures in epileptics, for instance, which has been known about for a very long time.


CARNIVORE is the latest form of evolutionary nutritional diets.  Shawn Baker, Paul Saladino, and a host of others now tout this living only on animal products, mostly meat and organs.  I think this is an excellent reduction of human needs, and points out that we have gotten evolutionarily far off track!  Think about it: during the Ice Age approximately 20,000 years ago, what else could our ancestors have eaten?  Meat was it: and we thrived on it, growing brain mass and the ability to cope with our environment as a byproduct.  


We even learned to hunt the huge mastodons of those days, making dwellings of their bones and skins, and evolving into Cro-Magnon man, the epitome of modern man.  In Nietche’s words: ‘what did not kill us, made us stronger’.  So did the Ice Age make us strong, healthy problem solvers with tight knit nuclear families and tribes.


If you have intractable health problems, like any autoimmune disease, I would not go Keto as so many do today.  I would skip over that oversimplification, and go full carnivore.  Like Jordan Peterson and his daughter have done, internet truth-tellers both.  A carnivore diet is the purest diet you can have, with no complicating side effects like those that come from consuming any plant material.  


By definition, it is ketogenic, containing no carbs whatsoever, but is animal based, meaning it has no chemical compounds devised by plants to poison mammals that might consume them!  For rest assured, all plants, (which are far more ancient than animals like us), have spent eons evolving chemical compounds to injure and/or kill us and other animals as a form of self-protection.  They had to- they cannot run away, or fight back in any other way.


So, there we are today in evolutionary based diet and lifestyle.  I have spent the past 17 years or so watching my friends and acquaintances fall prey to disease and illness, all of which I knew how to fix!  But of course, no one wants to hear advice from someone they know, especially when that person has no qualifications… nothing like St. Fauci, who has all kinds of qualifications, but has led us into a quagmire of ill health and bad advice…


But enough of that- it is becoming increasingly obvious that the Covid scare is a politically motivated bunch of authoritarian nonsense, but let us stick with paleo for now:


If you are sick and fat and nearly dead- or just on that long road- I would go carnivore for an emergency reset!  OR I would just go true paleo diet and lifestyle, circa 2022.


Go lower carbs (much lower than the US average of 300 grams per day, perhaps about 80 or so).  Medical pros will say now ‘you need at least 130 grams per day’, but that is nonsense.  You don’t.


Eat vegetables, but not those with high oxalates, which are a potent plant poison which is loaded into so-called wonderful foods like kale, spinach, and beets.  They are not healthy foods, not at all.  For many, tomatoes and peppers are also harmful, and should be avoided for the most part.


Be “carnivorish” as termed by Paul Saladino the carnivore doctor.  Don’t only eat animal products; but make them the centerpiece of your diet!  Be like every generation from before about 1900 or so.  They knew!

Ben Patrick.  He can tell you how to avoid the scourge of our age- hip and knee replacement surgery- by doing simple exercises like walking backwards, pulling a weighted sled, and more!  Total fitness for life, with simple prophylactic exercises that deny medical professional tons of dollar-generating gruesome surgeries.  

Just do it.


In other words: Go Paleo!  Real foods from nature, no processed crap foods, natural exercise that makes you stronger from your ligaments and tendons to your joints, and doesn’t damage you like sports training does.  Eat some nuts, some vegetables, but do your research.  Seek to nourish your body, not just entertain your brain with raising your blood sugar.  And above all?


Get out of major cities!  Western cities have become magnets for criminal parasites from around our nation, and now the world.  The only solution is to avoid them, as suicidal altruism in now the norm in the Western World, and our own systems are poisoned against us, the originators of civilization itself.  To live in these places is the most dangerous thing you can do, and the most toxic by far.

Live in small communities, with people like yourself as much as possible.  Rural is ideal, and the Midwest is best.  North beats south; it best mimics our northern european heritage and climate.  Live from whence you evolved.

Oxalates and Migrants: a Metaphor podcast


 As illegal, unwanted migrants swarm across our borders, we can compare what happens to our country and civilization with what happens within our own bodies by bad interlopers.  Just as our country has been being invaded for decades by demographically dissimilar to us peoples, destroying and overcrowding our systems of schooling, policing, health care, housing, and every other facet of our political system- so too has your body been invaded for many years by a bad chemical chiefly produced by plants- oxalates!  


We have been brainwashed into thinking that, like Popeye- “We’re strong to the finish if we eats our spinach!”  Unfortunately, this is not true, not true at all!  Spinach has been pointed out of ages as being loaded with iron, numerous vitamins like vitamin A and K, and is low carb and loaded with fiber and Vitamin C!  What’s not to like?


Well, plenty!  Almost all of the nutrients found in spinach (and in all vegetation, actually) are not bioavailable to us.  They are ‘frozen’ as it were, unassimilable by animals such as us.  And they come packaged with a huge amount of oxalates, which are a compound that steals the very nutrients we are hoping to get from the vegetable (like spinach) that we are consuming, and actually takes these same nutrients from out body and other foods, giving us a net loss of nutrients.  


But the oxalates are even worse than that, in that they build up in the body, in joints, organs (like the kidneys that try to neutralize them) and can wind up causing incredible damage over time- stiff joints, leaky gut, all kinds of nutrient deficiencies, and a marked inability to heal in soft tissue injuries, causing seemingly lifelong aches and pains.  In fact, I have come to believe that most of the aches and pains, poor digestion and many other problems that are normally attributed to simple old age and wear-and-tear are actually caused in actuality by this long-term build up of oxalates!  They are that harmful.


Ironically, we get these harmful compounds by eating foods (like spinach) that we have been told are ‘healthy and virtuous’, and so inadvertently slowly poison ourselves with the best of intentions!  But really: should we be surprised?  These recommendations from organizations like the US government, that advocates eating mostly whole grains (which are also loaded with oxalates), and to eat sparingly of things like red meat and eggs. (Both of which are probably the very healthiest foods we can consume).


And, of course, they also tell us to eat plenty of vegetables, most of which are also loaded with oxalates, and other plant chemicals that are in actuality anti-nutrients.  Meaning compounds that harm us, not help us.  The various government agencies, you should know by now, are not in place to help the average citizen any longer- they have become a part of the Government Swamp as Trump so accurately puts it.  They function to help big agriculture to sell more subsidized grains, and to mislead us into thinking certain things are bad for us that aren’t, and also to help continue the profits of big Pharmaceuticals (who only benefit when we get sick by selling us more drugs), and big Medicine, which is their middleman by way of expensive health care for largely preventable diseases and maladies.  


Once again, we are back to the metaphor of endless migrants coming to our shores, and making all of our systems less efficient until finally the point of total failure.  Islamic migrants?  A people that is sworn to our destruction, and our government has been welcoming them within our cities and states?  And to what benefit?  Just like human oxalates, they are dedicated to our destruction, and we are told to welcome them regardless!  

“Eat your spinach!  Welcome Muslims!!  It’s all good!!”


It’s not, none of it.  We should not eat spinach, or beets or beet greens, or rhubarb, or whole grains, or sweet potatoes, or white potatoes, fries and chips.  At least not much..  At the very least, we will get kidney stones which are very painful, and that is just an indication of the worse problems to follow if we don’t stop!


Similarly, by opening our borders to Muslims and other peoples who are very unlike the majority of us, we are setting up our very society, country, and civilization itself for future pain, destruction, and long-term ruination.  


So- close the border on Oxalates!  Start tracking how much you take in- go to SallyKNorton.com and see her tables of oxalates in various foodstuffs.  Start being mindful, and slowly cut back on these harmful foods loaded with oxalates.  


And similarly, close our nation’s borders!  Keep harmful people OUT.  Vote for Trump this election- that alone should be obvious.  In fact, vote ALL Republican- the party that ended slavery!  Take back control of our government by the people themselves, not the Big Government that also gives us the Food Pyramid, and Big Agriculture and Big Pharma and Big Medicine!!  


In our government, just as in our health- we should be assuming control over our own health and well-being.  Do not assign such weighty matters to BIG ANYTHING- do it yourself.  Remember- government should be small, and it should be made up of people just like ourselves.

Paleo Quick Tip of the Day #93 The NEW Paleo Miracle Drug!





It is often said that there is “nothing new under the sun”.  And this is no exception- the “new paleo miracle drug” is actually as old as fire- but it is a miracle drug nonetheless!

This paleolithic elixir is bone broth.  Not just soup stock, which is when you boil bones and ideally the marrow and connective tissues as well, but bone broth, where you simmer the bones to extract the very essence of human nutrition and healing; and you extract them for at least 12 hours, and as long as 48 hours or more!

This is the key for maximum health benefits, and what separates bone broth from the mere flavoring agent of simple beef or chicken stock.

Not only will bone broth give you all of the nutrients needed to heal problems with your joints and bones (it really works miracles in that department), bone broth also heals your gut, which is so very important.  Listen- all of us have damaged, or “leaky” guts, where bad cells can slip through our digestive tracts and right into our bloodstream. 

This is where all autoimmune diseases have their start!  And these are the diseases that are killing, and hurting all of us so badly.  Name the scariest diseases you know- they are all autoimmune, in which the body starts attacking itself.  Cancer, arthritis, alzheimer’s, chron’s disease, diverticulitis, type 1 diabetes, and even heart disease is initially a form of autoimmune disease. 

And ever since we started eating massive amounts of gluten from genetically altered wheat, and adding tons of chemicals to our environment in the form of pesticides, herbicides, fluoride and chlorine, along with antibiotics in our meats and more chemicals in our toxic cleaning products... well, back when I was young, in the 1950’s, Cancer was quite rare!  As were most diseases- I never even heard of diabetes until I was grown, and it only struck old people.  Now, autism, diabetes, cancer- almost everyone winds up with one or several of these horrible diseases. 

Not to be a PollyAnna, which would be to take the name of my little sister, Polly Ann in vain, but simply taking in bone broth on a near daily basis would counter most of this insult.  Bone broth heals your gut lining- better than anything else!  Along with eating LOTS of green veggies, ideally in the form of a green smoothie, and grass fed meats and pastured dairy, bone broth will heal you, and make you immune to most of our modern enemies:

I guarantee, if you get out your slow cooker, put in some soup bones (my favorite is a Marrow Bone!), a chicken carcass, or a combination of bones from healthy animals, add a little sea salt and apple cider vinegar (just a splash, to help get the minerals out), and let it simmer for a couple of days, and then drink a cup- you are on the road to health my friend!

Healthy skin (this first is actually quick, and quite remarkable, since the skin is the mirror of the gut)- clear and healthy. 

Healthy weight- proper digestion ensures satiety, and you will not desire junk foods like sweets and pastries

Above all- a healthy gut!  This is important for the whole human body- Hippocrates himself said that all health comes from the gut!

You can either keep the slow cooker simmering away for days and days, or you can do like I do:  I simmer a couple of days, then ladle into canning jars, leaving the sick little depleted bones behind.  Put the canning jars into the fridge, and heat up whenever- I try to have a cup or so per day.  You can even whisk an egg into the cup you have heated in the microwave, and “instant egg drop soup”!  Tastes great, too...

Or, you can use them as a soup base, as I did with my PaleoJay’s chili earlier this week.  OR, you can take one 16 oz jar of bone broth, and add some new potatoes, carrots, grass fed stew meat and onions- slow cook them for about 2 and 1/2 hours- and then do like I am going to do right now:

The more I look into the benefits of grass fed beef as opposed to it’s Confined Animal Feededing Operation  (CAFO) counterpart, the better the grass fed, traditional model looks:

Far better for the consumer’s health- leaner, perfect balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats.  Modern diet is woefully inadequate in Omega 3 fats, which leads to all kinds of problems.

Loaded with conjugated linoleic acid, of CLA (love these acronyms!), which have been found to strongly inhibit cancer growth

Also, I find grass fed beef to be far more filling per serving; cooks faster, and tastes better!

Interestingly, the CAFO operations feed corn to cattle to quickly fatten them up.  So why do we think corn flakes and popcorn are diet foods??  They marble us with fat just as they do cattle.

Also, if you have not yet found a source of good grass fed beef, try US Wellness meats at http://www.grasslandbeef.com/  The best option is to get your meat locally from a farmer you know and trust, but if you don’t have that option- this is a good bet!  They charge $7.50 for handling however large the order, and shipping is included- so, you need to order a lot to make this option work!  Get together with friends and family, or invest in a large freezer.  
You have to make sure your beef is “grass finished” not just grass fed, since much beef is fed on grass, and then “finished” on corn to fatten it up- this undoes most of the grass feeding health benefits!  Make sure your meat is grass fed from start to finish!

 There are many, many benefits to walking- and I don’t mean the quasi-racewalking you see groups of mainly women do around town, and at the mall.  Humans are meant to walk, or hike, not in a manic, burn-tons-of-calories sense, but just... moving around,at a slow, steady pace, for much of our day!  So... DO park fat away at the store, and walk up to the door... do walk for pleasure, but NOT to “burn calories” (exercise of any sort is really pretty USELESS at weight control), but just to enjoy the movement, and the many benefits it provides to your joints & muscle maintenance.  
If you do want to include walking as a true exercise, try “intentional” walking- just “think into” the muscles as you walk, making the movement as hard as you can just by visualizing the resistance as you go- pretend you’re walking through a heavy liquid, and it’s difficult!  This really works the leg muscles, and is a big help in muscle definition.
You incorporate this into your daily life, for short sessions of your walking.

And if you exercise by moving, sprint! Jogging will do nothing but wear you our, damage your joints, teach your body to move slowly and be good at storing fat, and addict you to the endorphins that make you do it more and more and more.  Sprinting a few fast intervals for 10 or 15 minutes max will do FAR more for your health and body composition than run/jogging for HOURS will.

You really can avoid most disease and other physical and mental problems by getting as healthy as possible!  We all have cancer, and diabetes, and a host of other diseases lying latent within us- we can avoid them by eating and living as if we knew we had cancer and the rest already.  If you had cancer, you would do anything to rid yourself of it- you’d eat perfectly if you knew how, rest appropriately, and move appropriately to heal yourself... well, guess what- you do know how!  Eating in a Paleo fashion, sleeping well, connecting with friends and family, exercising as in Perfectly Paleo Exercise, drinking a green, Paleo Smoothie each day as in Perfectly Paleo Exercise (both available at www.paleojay.com) - eat as if you are sick, and then YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO BECOME SICK FOR REAL!

And, if you already have and autoimmune disease such as diabetes, or multiple sclerosis, or alzheimer’s, or any disease ending in “itis”, these are all diseases where the body is attacking itself, due to a “leaky gut”, primarily caused by long term consumption of bad foods such as wheat and other grains, industrial vegetable seed oils, that allow food particles to migrate into the bloodstream and confuse the body into attacking it’s own tissues.  If you are in this boat, you need an more extreme version of the Paleo Diet- eliminating or at least sharply curtailing nightshades, ie.  tomatoes, bell peppers, chili powders and also eggs.  Try eliminating them all, and then reintroduce one by one to see which causes you problems.  This is tough, because if you don’t have  and autoimmune disease or a native sensitivity, these are very nutritious and healthy foods, so again, as in the above- if you are not already sick, then eat as if you are, and then you never will be!
