I have been listening, via a great podcast superhuman radio on my iPhone to Dr. Thomas Levy.  The good doctor, who is not any longer in lock-step with his professional colleagues, has had great success in treating many modern diseases with Vitamin C!  (Remember Linus Pauling?  He was castigated, similarly to Robert Atkins of the low carb diet fame, by the medical establishment).

It turns out that vitamin C, which is produced by virtually ALL other animals, is NOT produced by humans.  Common knowledge, really, but the implications to health are very important:  The RDA for vitamin C might prevent scurvy; but it is far too low to prevent "scurvy of the heart", or "scurvy of the bones", or other bodily systems.

The bottom line is that Vitamin C is FAR more important for us than the current medical system believes, or is willing to recommend.  The implications for heart disease, and cancer, to name only two, are more important than we might ever believe- not to mention simply optimizing our health.


So, what is the bottom line?

I don't think it is necessary, or even optimal to take massive amounts of supplements. After all, that is why they are called supplements!


"But Jay, but Jay!" I hear you saying.  "Supplements are so expensive!"


Yes, indeed they are, and many (most!) are totally synthetic, and not really good for human consumption...

So I say MAKE YOUR OWN SUPPLEMENTS!


Just start with a Vitamix blender...

Actually, many variations are possible- and are to be encouraged!  Go heavy on the vitamin C- and don't think only citrus- did you know that red peppers are much higher in vitamin C than oranges??






So, my point, again is this: MAKE YOUR OWN SUPPLEMENTS!  It's way easier to take a Vitamix, and blend together real foods, and drink them throughout your day1  I mean, cooking foods is great, cooking real foods like veggies and meats and fruits and spices and seafood!

Nothing better!  EXCEPT, perhaps:

Blending them up, RAW, along with every single thing your body needs in one, easily assimilable "package" that is not only easy to transport and consume, but that gives your body (and mind!) everything they need to thrive and gain optimum health!!

I don't know about you, but I would do all I could to avoid "scurvies"- in other words modern, sub-standard food deficiencies that will render me (and you too of course) sickly, be-deviled with "mind fog", and prone to all of the diseases of modern civilization- cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, the list goes on and on....

Just choose health!  It's easy, too- actually even easier than the fast foods that are leading the bulk of us to our sick, weak, pain-filled future-

Making a daily smoothie is about as easy as it gets, one we "get it" and make the transition!

If you have bad teeth, skin, or hair...

THIS IS THE "INDICATOR LIGHT" OF YOUR BODY:

This means that your body is "breaking down"!    If you don't address the cause; i.e. your sub-standard diet that is not providing your body enough nutrients, you are setting yourself up for all of the diseases of modern civilization:  ( listed above, but only partially...)

If your car was flashing "check oil" you would jump on it!!

Your body's indicator lights are SO much MORE important!

Do NOT ignore them!

Start making your own supplements!!

Paleo Quick Tip of the Day- What I WISH I had known about Diet and Exercise in my Teens!

Now, I am 62 years of age, and FINALLY think I have figured out a lot about proper diet, lifestyle, and exercise... but, how valuable would that have been when I was about 16??
INVALUABLE!

Unfortunately, back then, there was virtually nothing taught about it, and all that WAS given in the way of guidance was quite worthless.  And so, in my day, nothing was taught, and that was WAY BETTER than what is taught as almost a religion TODAY!

The American Medical Association, the FDA, American Dept. of Agriculture:

ALL of these hugely funded and highly regarded organizations teach LIES.

I don’t know how to say it any stronger!  They are all in the pocket of processed food and pharmaceutical drug companies- they are just advertisers, apologists, or SHILLS of those companies- they do not know, nor do they care about what can help you to be healthy, fit, strong, and lean-

They exist to sell processed, bad foods guaranteed to make you sick, fat, and unhealthy!

They exist to sell drugs to treat the SYMPTOMS (JUST the symptoms- not the root cause) of what ails you- sell you these drugs FOREVER!

THEY EXIST TO MAKE LOTS AND LOTS OF MONEY... AT YOUR EXPENSE!

At the expense of your health, and at the expense of your wealth.

I know, this seems very cynical, but it is very true I’m afraid...

And so, here is what I offer you- whatever your age, but especially if you are young, in your teens or twenties:

You can have a long, happy life- living in a lean, healthy, lithe and sculpted body, to a very great age- without medicines, without acne, without being fat or weak, just by following a few basic principles that are time-tested (since caveman days!), and not at all hard to grasp or follow, once you understand them.

Don’t eat junk foods!  This is #1 for a reason- if you do nothing else, this one thing will put you light years ahead of your friends- DON’T eat processed, fake, man made crap food!  This means Doritos, cheetos, twinkies, Mcdonalds, ALL fast foods, packaged cereals, skim milk, velveeta (fake) cheese, Taco Bell (fake meat)- you get the idea!  Just REAL FOOD!  Meat, eggs, whole milk, cream, butter, all the vegetables you can get, fruit!
Don’t drink soda pop of “energy drinks”- Coke, Mt. Dew, Dr. Pepper Red Bull and suchlike- these are all probably some of the worst things you can put in your body!
I actually don’t know which is worse- sugar or corn syrup sweetened ones, or chemical sweetened ones.  They really suck!  As bad as cigarettes!!

For exercise, stick to bodyweight exercise, like (I hope) you were taught in grade school.  The pushup is #1- do this one exercise, and you will be light years ahead of your friends who start lifting weights or who do nothing but video games.
The weight lifters will eventually injure themselves, quit working out and become fat, and the video gamers will just gradually become fat (but without lifelong injuries)...  Neither is a good outcome!

Just do pushups, in front of the tv, and straight legged situps along with body weight squats (meaning squats with no resistance) for high reps.  Believe it or not, but you can build quite a body by doing this routine for about 30 minutes, a few times a week-
First thing in the morning is by far the best way- get up before everyone else!!

And I mean both boys (or men) and girls (or women)!!

Just do modified pushups or negative situps if you need them- build up as best you can.

There is tons of information on exercise at www.paleojay.com as you progress...  but just make sure to do 1,2,and 3 above on a regular basis.

One more thing:  Get at LEAST 8 hours of sleep per night!

Sleep is what truly makes you what you are- it is JUST as important as good, God made food!!  Do NOT miss out on SLEEP!

If you want to participate in high school sports, go ahead!  But, if you don’t, rest assured that you can become even MORE FIT by doing what I just told you- by yourself-
and this is fitness that will last, and grow, and actually become amazing to others-


FOR A LIFETIME

That is what I wish that I had known.  Do the above, and you will be clear-skinned, energetic, happy, healthy, lean and fit- guaranteed.  It really is that simple!

PaleoJay's Smoothie Cafe and Birthday Today on Podcast #74- 62 years, and a barefoot huarache, accompanied by a Homo Sapien Diet make me HAPPY!

Today, my friends, is my 62nd birthday!!

And so, as an advance birthday present to myself, I bought myself two wonderful things: A new Stihl chainsaw!  The ranch boss with an 18 inch bar, which I have been using, and will use for many years to come… AND, a pair of Xero shoes- truly these are barefoot shoes, that are nothing but a thin piece of rubber and a couple of elastic cords to hold them to your feet!  Huaraches, is what they are called by the Tarahumara Indians- they weigh a few ounces at best, and are total freedom for your feet- better than barefoot!

I have been using them for my basement workouts, each Sunday, for a few months now- I gave myself my birthday gifts for Christmas!  Walking, running, or just plain knocking about with bare feet is so liberating- it gets your feet out of the little COFFINS they have been confined in since you were a little tyke, and gets them to stabilizing and working with all the tendons and ligaments and tiny muscles working in syncronicity like they were always meant to… the problem with shoes is that our feet become so weak, that we start to compensate for our feet being so incompetent in balancing and helping us to walk and move that we start to strain and injure our backs, knees, hips, and our soft little out-of-shape feet as well!!

All they really need to do is to start working!

And to work, all they need to do is to get outside of shoes!  Then, they will naturally do the work they are created to do!

I don’t really like the 5 fingers types of shoes, or all the other trendy, expensive, over-built supposedly NON-shoe shoes… they are still SHOES!!

These huaraches are… barefoot- but with protection on the bottom!  And that is all you really need, a little protection from modern interference with the surface we walk on- things like glass, sharp rocks and sticks, whatever- nowadays, we need to protect the bottoms of our feet- but we still need to walk as natural, paleo humans walked- in a barefoot gait, and unsupported by the “casts” of arch supports, hot boxes of foot-encasing leather, canvas and plastic!

And so, get a pair!  Join the Cafe tribe in being barefoot… but NOT!  When you are working out (I have a concrete and dirt floored basement- these things are great for  swinging my kettlebell and pulling myself around on my gymnastic rings down there!)  I always work out barefoot in the living room, each morning, but that’s on carpet…  This Spring and Summer and Fall, I plan to wear them constantly; around the yard, hiking, sprinting, biking, driving the tractor, driving into town to the store, to the hardware store… you get the idea- everywhere!

Think how strong the complex interconnections of all the tendons and ligaments in the suspension bridge that makes up my feet will be, just from doing that!  They’re already pretty strong just from basement workouts once per week…

So, strong feet are wonderful!  But to be strong ALL OVER- eat a

                                              Homo Sapien Diet!!
What a concept!

Every other animal has a specific diet, that is known and studied, categorized and understood.  A cat needs a carnivorous diet of animal carcasses… no discussion needed- anything else, and the cat will sicken, and become diseased and unhealthy.

A cow needs GRASS!  (The USDA may argue, but they are WRONG!)  Grains are  poison to cows, just as they are to us- cows are ruminants, meaning that they eat grass… but, no one likes to say just what HUMANS should eat!  We may be the highest animal (sometimes I wonder), but we still, are God’s ANIMAL!

And, like any other animal, a specific diet is ideal for us, and it’s quite simple and specific, just like any other creature on God’s earth!

We need to eat the fatted calf!  We need the vegetables and fruits of the earth, that are here for us, in their natural, NON GMO perverted form!!  We need butter, and cream, and full-fat, raw dairy, especially in fermented versions.  We need lemons, and pineapple, and green bananas, and rice and sweet potatoes- and, we can tolerate on occasion real, ANCIENT grain varieties- but we need to realize that, even in ancient days, bread and other grain products were known to be what they really are:

POOR FOODS- meaning foods to eat if times were really tight, and there was nothing else, like fish or vegetables or meat to keep body and soul together!  THEN bread and grains were ok- if that’s all there was!!

So, concentrate on the food that is the best for you, the HUMAN animal!

1. Vegetables- the more brightly colored the better!
2. Meats- organ meats preferred; then some muscle meat!  Seafood, if wild caught it is also incredibly nutritious!
3.Good fat- coconut oil, pastured butter, pastured dairy that is fermented into kefir, cream or cheese, olive oil, other real nut oils, fat from pastured animals like hogs and beef!
4. Nuts and seeds- Not a lot, but almonds are fine in small amounts, as are other tree nuts.  Cashews are fine in moderation, as are beans, if properly prepared. They help to feed your “gut microbes” which in turn help to feed YOU!
5. Fruit- best in moderation- Berries and citrus are great- put them in your Green Paleo Smoothie!  Emphasis is always, though, on the GREEN!!
6. Coffee, Chocolate, Alcohol- yes… dark chocolate, coffee, and alcohol, ALL in moderation, are wonderful  additions to the homo sapiens diet, and should be enjoyed and actually encouraged since,  not only do they add enjoyment to life, the actually enhance our health!!

And so, what is NOT the human, homo sapien natural, real diet??

Any diet that has you eating boxes of processed “food”, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, ANY diet that tells you to eat NON real foods like skimmed milk, margarine, low fat yogurt, =or actually low fat anything!

These are non-human foods!!    That way lies disease, and madness…

So, in a nutshell, what is the Homo Sapiens Diet?

Just eat real foods.  Foods that your great, great, great, great, great grandparents would recognize as food!  It really is that simple.

Eat food made by GOD.   Avoid at all costs food manipulated, and twisted, by

                      MAN!!

It really is that easy.

This seems to be such a blatantly obvious statement, but just think about it-

USUALLY it is ignored!

Most of the population of the Western world at least, and increasingly the whole world, subsists more and more on.... fake, processed, and fast foods!  Large quantities of refined grains and sugars; both made from genetically modified - MAN MADE- sources- GMO wheat and GMO sugar beets, primarily.  Throw in a lot of high fructose corn syrup and processed industrial seed oils, both of which are also MAN MADE, sprinkle on some chemical sweeteners and flavorings and colorings for good measure...

And you have a man made nightmare of NON-NUTRITION!!

It is really, really, really necessary, not just optional, to get back to eating real, GOD MADE foods if we want to regain or enhance our health, and that of our families.

The only viable way to do this, really, is to start cooking and eating at HOME, most of the time, for most people!  If you have an unlimited budget, and LOTS of free time, AND you live in an area where the Paleo diet has caught on in a big way, and meals are offered in restaurants that are made of real, Paleo, God made foods, well then this is an option for you- congratulations!  You have just freed up more time and energy for optimizing your God made exercise, and getting more sleep and meditation built into your life.  But for most us- we don’t live where nearly ANYONE even has heard of the Paleo diet, much less supports it!  And, most of us do NOT have an unlimited budget, and unlimited time!  Surprise surprise surprise!!

So, we eat and cook at home- and, if you are like me, that is what you prefer, anyway!  I love to grill at home; that’s what I plan to do after I work out this frigid Sunday afternoon- grass fed steak and sweet potato fries in coconut and olive oil on the grill!  Wowzer!!

The crock pot is great as well- I just made a BIG pot of turkey soup last week, with the broth from my last grilled chicken carcass as the stock, and plenty of veggies, garlic, and turkey meat.  Cook in quantity, and you are set for the week- you can easily freeze smaller portions- heck, around here we can just set the containers outside on the porch and store them frozen there!  

Make a plate of eggs in the AM, and get some pastured bacon for your frying pan, and cook the eggs in the good fat from that!  Or, get a soft boiled egg maker- I have one, it was about $20 years ago- a little electric machine that makes 6 perfect hard or soft boiled eggs at a time, in just a few minutes- I really have become addicted to soft boiled eggs!  I also recommend a Rosle soft boiled egg cutter to easily remove the top of the egg mess free, and some little egg cups and tiny spoons... sounds elaborate, but for a very small investment, you can begin incorporating some top-notch God made nutrition into your family’s life- it’s like a little, fun ritual, opening those little gold-centered nuggets of nutrition and scooping them out!

A big salad with pastured meat or fish at lunch, and grilled meat at supper with veggies slathered in grass fed butter- it really is that easy!  Have some wine with that!!

Of course, you know that I also use as a foundation of God made food my Paleo Smoothie, detailed here at length on my site at www.paleojay.com, and in my eBooks.
All you need is a Vitamix blender, and you can be like me, and whip up the healthiest beverage on the planet each and every day!  Although now I find, since I have added in the avocado, I can usually only get through a canister of my smoothie every two, or even three days- it is that filling and nutritious.

So, let’s say you have the nutrition all figured out, and God is providing... you are MORE than half way to ideal health!  NOW, you just need to add in 

GOD MADE EXERCISE!

Here is where I really veer off from the standard Paleolithic crowd!  The standard recommendations would be to join a good Crossfit gym, do power lifting, like squats, bench presses and deadlifts, and also incorporated Olympic lifts into your routine!

My gosh, if you are new to this, I’ll bet you want to quit right now... but don’t- not only are all of these heavy weight moves NOT necessary, they are actually counterproductive, long term!  The heavy weights will compress your spine, particularly in the squat and deadlift, and the bench press will destroy your shoulders and elbows, long term.  And, you can accomplish all you need to, and would want to, without any danger of injury, using your OWN BODY AS GOD INTENDED!  

Have you ever seen a cat use weights to build its incredibly lithe, sculpted, and functional physique?  Or any animal?  NO, they know how to maintain their perfect health and musculature- the do the animal equivalent of Perfectly Paleo Exercise!

They use their own body to supply the resistance needed to perfectly develop and sculpt the muscle- this is really all that you need.  And, it will develop your body in an aesthetically pleasing way, since although muscle size and shape will be the result, just as in heavy weight training- it will come without unnecessary BULK, and injury.

And for Heaven’t sake, don’t get me started on long distance running and injury and muscle loss- it’s even worse...

For women, in particular, this Perfectly Paleo form of exercise is especially good, since it makes for a lean, lithe look, not the look of an OX, as in Arnold Shwarzenegger or other bodybuilers... for men, it can result in the look of a gymnast, or the physique of Frank Zane in his prime, or Steve Reeves, just a little smaller, and healthier.  And you will fit perfectly into standard clothing, with small waisted slacks and large or extra large shirts...  it really is a win win!

God Made exercise also builds up the tendons along with the muscles, and the small, stabilizing core muscles of the neck, back, abs and even the wrists and hands- even the jaw is not ignored!  You exercise, methodically and pleasurably, almost like a kind of moving meditation, each part of your body.  You can do it anywhere, I usually am in front of the TV in my living room with a good Netflix movie on, early in the morning, but that’s just me- today I’ll do my basement workout on my rings hanging in the basement, but that’s just because I LIKE to- it’s not really necessary for health and fitness.  

I think things like gymnatics, while challenging and fun, are like what weight lifting was really intended to be about- not to CREATE health and strength, but to DEMONSTRATE IT.  This is what weight lifting was in the old days- a circus strongman kind of thing to amaze- not the actual process used to GET STRONG!

And heck, do you really want to be a circus freak?  A bearded lady, or whatever?  Or do you want to be a strong, flexible, aesthetically appealing super healthy person?  If so, all you need is your own body, bodyweight exercise and self resisted exercise, with the foundation of all a regimen of virtual resistance, generated within your own body!

So, really think about what I’m telling you- you have within you the power to be perfectly fit and healthy, as God intended you to be!  Just use His tools:

Back to the Future 2- a New Paleo You!


Last week we started you on your journey back to the future, by making you a more paleolithic self, starting with DIET alone.  Now, we will continue our 4 week total Paleo self reinvention- I hope you have done well for the first 7 days!  If you have made it intact through that first week, know that you have done the hardest part by far!  The first few days, especially, are the most difficult, as you retrain yourself to eat correctly for you species, which of course is the homo sapien species, not the grain and sugar eating  Bird species of diet which is the current misguided approach...

Even if you slipped up once or twice, it’s no big deal at all- the point is to gradually and systematically keep moving in the right direction- passing on grains and grain based products, fast “fake” foods, and boatloads of sugar and/or artificial sweeteners (which are basically the same thing- BAD!).  If you slip and fall, just get back on the horse and get going in the right direction!  

This week, although it is still early for really beginning to exercise, I want you to start- Walking!  Not really for exercise, or for burning calories, but just because it’s what humans do.  We move, not like we’re being pushed with a cattle prod, but at a natural, pleasant pace, for a good portion of our day.  For now, park at the back of the lot at the store, at work, and walk the extra 2 or 3 minutes it will take you to get inside.  Make it a habit- my 93 year old father has done this his whole life, and still does it!  Take stairs, not elevators.  Just live like people did 100 years ago, and you are pretty much on track with being paleo!  Real foods, prepared at home, when eating grains they had the non-GMO ancient varieties, and fast food didn’t exist.  LOTS of good, natural fat like pastured butter (Haven’t you enjoyed that this past week??  Instead of vegetable oils and margarine fake fats??)  OH- note this: margarine was originally invented to lubricate machinery!  So, it’s kind of like spraying WD 40 down your throat...

Anyway, now you are walking, lubricating your joints, and just plain keeping the machinery of your body working!  What a concept; somehow we have forgotten just how important it is to simply MOVE.  That’s how most folks end up in nursing homes- they have just stopped moving, and before long they cannot move.  So keep moving, son!
Turn Around!!! Back to the future!

I touched on sleep last week, but I want to reiterate its importance here again, and want you to get 8 to 9 hours of sleep all this entire week!  Most people get far less than that, and have no idea how good you can feel when you just sleep enough!  Black out your bedroom if there are lights outside at night, get the tv out of the bedroom as well- the bedroom is not a recreation place- it is a sacred sleeping spot, where you will spend a good, restful, restorative 1/3 of your life; getting into that all-important dream state where our minds resolve most of our issues in life, if we only give our subconscious the time and sleep state that it needs.  Mental problems are inevitable for sleep deprivation, just as physical problems like diabesity, cancer and heart problems are inevitable for nutrient deprivation, which is another name for the S.A.D. Standard American Diet!
So, this week especially, concentrate on walking and sleeping, along with your upgraded Ancestral diet.

There is one other thing I would suggest you begin this week as well, on your Paleo Journey back to the future part 2- do light stretching and mobility work immediately upon  waking in the morning.  I don’t mean stretch and hold static stretching- I mean just reaching up as high as you can with either arm, stretching out first thing!  Then, roll your head on your neck, several times 360 degrees in each direction, then work your way through each joint of your body- after your neck, rotate your wrists and elbows each direction, then arm circles with outstretched palms for the shoulder joints, again both ways.  The point is not to WORK so much as it is to gradually lubricate and awaken your body and limbs, slowly and methodically... Next, twist at the waist to facing left, then right several times, do a 1/4 of the way down squat several times.  Stand next on one foot, and spin your other foot at the ankle both ways.  This is the most natural, best way to wake up in the world!  Just this little bit of morning “constitutional” will do so much to prepare your body for the day, and it just plain feels really, really good!

Watch any other animal waking up, especially a cat, and you will realize the modern human practice of just stumbling up out of bed and getting going with no preparation is crazy wrong!  Trust me, start doing this each morning, for just a couple of minutes, and you will be doing more for your bodily health than running a 10K, by far!

After all, you want to be a Paleo Marty McFly, don’t you?  Agilely leaping on your skateboard like a cat, while bulky, stiff Biff, who never did his agility exercises, runs into the back of a manure truck?  

Of course you do!

Coconut oil and/or red Palm oil- 2 Tablespoons
Carlson’s or Nordic Naturals Cod liver oil- 1 Tablespoon
Powdered kelp- 1 teaspoon
Spirulina- 1 tsp
Vitamin D3 liquid- a few drops
J.Crowe's Lugol solution of iodine- a few drops
Unsweetened kefir- 1/4 cup
Organic, unsweetened lemon juice- 1 teaspoon
Apple cider vinegar- 1 teaspoon
1-2 cups of green tea
cinnamon- 1 tsp- also great on coffee and whipped cream! (Fresh ground is best-
I use a coffee grinder)
Frozen spinach or kale or other leafy green- approximately 1 cup
Frozen mixed “California Mix” vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots), ~1 cup
Frozen mixed berries- blueberries, raspberries, strawberries- 1 cup
1/2 banana (I freeze mine so they don’t over-ripen)-optional
1 peeled orange
2 raw, organic free range eggs (optional) or more!  I often use 4 eggs; the yolks are the best part, nutritionally speaking!  Who needs fake protein powders?  
Greek yogurt also a good protein source
Also, 1 Tablespoon Kerrygold pastured butter
1 can coconut milk OR coconut milk powder


Since publishing my ebook, I have begun adding the dried, powdered varieties of:
turmeric 1 tsp
ginger 1 tsp
kelp 1 tsp
spirulina 1 tsp
red beet powder 1 tsp
These are strong anti-inflammatory agents, among many other benefits.
And NOW:
4 Tablespoons Bob's Potato Starch!  This is key for feeding your gut microbes!!


Another tip: Bulk Foods if a great place to order your dried coconut milk powder from!  

They are a food wholesaler; so you get top notch stuff at rock bottom prices- they ship fast, and are a great source for all kinds of very healthy, and also very unhealthy foods- it's your choice!

Whenever I order some dried coconut powder, I also order some nuts, dark Lindt chocolate bars, spices and other healthy things like kelp and spirulina.  I have no affiliation with Bulk Foods whatever, but they are a great resource in your Paleo lifestyle! 
 (Just don't order the gummy bears in bulk...)


Quite frankly- if you start making a daily smoothie similar to the above daily, you will be doing more to improve and salvage your health than anything else I can think of!  We are all suffering from years of substandard nutrition, since we are all suffering from many years of misinformation and propagandizing about long, slow exercise and low-fat nutritional lies.  We have to be pro-active in rebuilding our sadly lacking health through adding in all the nutrient density we can!

This Smoothie will do that- restore your health- give you glowing skin, healthy, vital teeth and hair, and a restored immune system from the "inside out", as the beneficial bacteria are restored in your intestinal tract that digest many foods for you.

To complete your nutritional rebirth, after starting in with the above, get going with a Weber Grill, making a cornucopia of foods weekly that will last you through the week!  

Just reheat later, and you'll easily have a week's worth of lunches and dinners after an enjoyable "grill outing" in your yard on a Sunday afternoon!

The other thing I would recommend?  

Get a crock pot!

You can throw together a great Paleolithic meal in the morning, just after you make your Paleo smoothie, and before you do your Paleo Exercises!  

Trust me, after you get into it, this early morning stuff will become the highlight of your day- especially the EXERCISE!

This stuff really is not all that hard!  It just requires... change... but this change is so worth it! 
It means health, and vitality, and mental health (our crappy modern diet is just as bad for our mental health as our physical health)!

Easy Crock Pot Bone Broth, or "Perpetual Soup"



Ok, so I have NOT gotten around to making bone broth yet, at least on a regular basis.  My bad!
Then, I ran across this article by Jenny McGruther of the Nourished Kitchen blog- simple, endless, steaming quantities of bone broth are now mine! But, I prefer the term Perpetual Soup...

In a nutshell, I have 1/2 of a chicken in the crockpot, topped with a bunch of vegetables, some bay leaf seasoning, and some cracked pepper.  I can pull out some cooked chicken whenever I'd like this week, and can strain out the broth from a ladle through a coffee filter... a week from today, after a solid week of perpetual soup steaming away on low in the crockpot, I will take what is left, along with the mushy bones that still have good nutrition left in them, and throw them in the Vitamix to grind them up, and make additional, freezable soup stock- perhaps this will become an additional ingredient in the daily Paleo Smoothie- we will have to see how this experiment works out, but it seems both promising and likely!

Liquid Breakfast, Paleo style!

OK- here is my breakfast today: A paleo smoothie, coffee (actually espresso) topped with real organic whipped cream (THANKS Kitchenaid Mixer!),  and hot chocolate, a wonderful beverage made with Hershey's special dark cocoa, two Truvia packets,  hot water and MORE whipped cream...

The HOT beverages are then sprinkled liberally with cinnamon and cloves!

I mean, this is the lap of luxury!  In the ancient world, these ingredients would be enough to signify incredible wealth, if not the meal of royalty.  But we, in the western world, can have these, daily, easily and cheaply...

WHY THEN DON'T WE??


I really mean this!  Since we can have incredibly satisfying, nutritious foodstuffs  virtually whenever we so desire, why do most of us choose cheap, processed, unsatisfying, non-nutritious CRAP???


Two words:  Marketing and Laziness

We have been "marketed" to from our births.  The ability of marketers is incredible: they can make us desire things that we have never even considered, to the point where we will do almost anything to acquire those things that they are... pushing!
In the immortal words of the rock band Steppenwolf- "God Damn- the pusher man!"The Pusher Man!

Actually, that is somewhat harsh- they are just doing their job- convincing us to buy their "stuff".  But, they do intentionally mislead us, when they tout the benefits of "whole grains" and "vitamin fortified" to get us to buy their Count Chocula and Captain Crunch types of crappy nightmare breakfast cereals.

They really are the "pusher man", come to think of it!

Laziness: That's the other side of the coin.  We ALL want things to be "easy".  Why not??

And so, the pusher man latches on to that fact, and tells us how easy it is to just eat a big bowl of "healthy" cereal, with nutrient "heart healthy" pasteurized skimmed milk, and then to eat a Big Mac super sized meal (you deserve a break today!), and then have a hearty, heart-healthy bowl of pasta and low fat breadsticks for supper, since you are concerned about your health!

If it was up to you, in the "wild", with not pusher man around, what would you choose?

I'll tell you what: you'd choose the most nutrient-dense food you could find!  Eggs, vegetables, seafood, tubers, fruits- whatever you could get your hands on!!


Fruity Pebbles would not even be on your radar...

And you'd be the better for it!!

Our bodies crave nutrient dense foods.  If we deny it, our bodies will demand that we eat more!
And more!
AND MORE!


Until we satisfy their need for vital nutrients!


And, if we keep eating "pusher-man crap"?  i.e. Mc Donald's, breakfast cereals, donuts, pop...


Our bodies will tell us to just KEEP ON EATING!!
"WE NEED NUTRIENTS!!"  


But if we keep eating "junk/pusher-man marketer mainstream low-fat crap"...

Our bodies will continue to scream: "EAT MORE!!" ad infinitum...

Paleo is achievable, anywhere!

Here I am, in Columbus Ohio- I am visiting the North Market, which is a wonderful collection of independent restaurateurs, grocers, and butchers in one neat old building!  I'd never been to Columbus (or even Ohio!), but I was very impressed with the town, the people, and the culinary opportunities...

Most major, and even middle-sized communities are now like this: they have Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or some such marketer that supplies REAL FOOD in lieu of the processed crap that has become, lamentably, mainstream in the past few decades.  If YOU live in a major metropolis, you don't need to lament- real food is available now in metro areas easily- fresh, or frozen fruits and vegetables, meats, even grass-fed are readily available prepared and ready to eat! The only variable??

YOU!

You just need to choose REAL FOODS!  No boxes of "helpers", no "Ultra pasteurized", or "radiated" need to be chosen- vote with your dollars!  Real, Raw, minimally processed foods are ALL that we should eat.  This will get the attention of the food providers better than any proselytizing we could ever do- if the providers really believe that we only want REAL food- they will, finally, and reluctantly, move in that direction.

Processed, nutrition-less foods are much more profitable, and so they are reluctant to leave them behind...  there will be a backlash from the mainstream big-food grain cartels, Pharmaceutical companies and the American Medical Association that they support...

A BIG BACKLASH!!  Get ready!!

Lots of misinformation will be coming our way in the next decade or so!

Stick to your guns:

Real food.
Real exercise.
Real sleep.
Real relaxation and community with family and friends.

Medicine and medical professionals, i.e. Doctors, Dentists, Optometrists should be kept to a BARE MINIMUM!!

Go Old Westerns: you only see the old "sawbones" when you are shot, broke a limb, or you need a tooth extracted.  Otherwise, you STAYED AWAY and took care of yourself!!

SO, STICK TO YOUR GUNS!

"Beware the barrenness of a busy life"- Socrates

Obviously, this cat is not suffering from "busyness"!

Most of us are; oftentimes, me included.

We are not meant to be "busy", but are meant to be USEFUL.
Deliberate, practical steps are required of us-

Planning and cooking our meals
Planning and doing our workouts
Planning on getting enough sleep and relaxation to function optimally

Being "busy" makes these important steps hard to achieve.

Mindfulness is the point.  Live in the moment.  Savor what you have, and are.

You are not cold, starving, or enslaved.  You are free!

And so, you can take steps to make sure you are fulfilled as a person.

Eat the best you can!  No junk- meat, good fats, vegetables and fruits.
Train briefly, and intensely.
Sleep well, interact with others, be positive.
Meditate, and PLAY!  Whatever you like: golf, music, sports (NOT spectator sports!!), frisbee; whatever!)  Just meditate on your own, and play with others.

And now, rejoice!  Your life is not "busy"!

It is FULL!
