Buy your Paleo food Locally Part 2

OK, I was all excited: I went to the processor of many of the eatwild.com farms that had grass fed beef here in my area of Southwestern Wisconsin!  I thought-

"This is so cool!  ALL of these family farms, who have their grass fed, wholesome beef and other meats processed in this one facility will now be available to me!  One stop shopping!!"

I asked the counterman about grass fed beef...

"No- we do process a lot of family farms that do that, but here we only sell
HIGH GRADE, GRAIN FED BEEF!"

This was a nice meat market, but wouldn't you think the guy would think about all the grass fed beef they were processing, and think that there might be a market for it in his own store?

Disappointing, but it pointed out one thing to me: 

You really need to connect with a FARMER who does things the way you want!

The convenient, modern, one-stop-shopping route that was the be-all-end-all of the 1960's better living through chemistry and industrialization has FAILED!  And, by it's very nature, it will continue to fail; we need to get back to buying local produce, in particular meats that we know that the farmer or rancher involved is trustworthy and honest.  Strong ETHICS are important in ALL endeavors!

We did check out a really nice GOLF COURSE in Winona, Minnesota, just up the river from us, The Bridges, that has a restaurant: Signatures that features local meats, and free range chicken dishes- excellent- if you are traveling the "River Road", and are in Winona, check this place out!

Paleo approved!

 But then, on the way home we spied this BUS next to us on the highway:

But check out the dilapidated bus, and the broken window!
This looks like a hippie dream gone wrong!  Kind of scary, really...

Here is another view of the Winona golf course- very Paleo-esque, easy to imagine Indian/paleolithic peoples running around in this environment, (sans chairs), they would just do the Asian squat-



And so, I thought I would leave you with a Utopian vision of what a nice golf course and Eden-like landscaping can do-

Food for the Paleo-nativist soul- Ideal landscape, sunshine, healthy activity (golf) - with real foods!

I hope you have days such as this, for a long time to come!  Life is really simple, if you think about it.

Paleo Smoothie- the undeniable benefits!

Many are resistant to the idea of a Paleo Smoothie. ..

It's "too much work", "I don't have a Vitamix and they are too expensive", and "I need to chew!"  Yup, I've heard that last one as well!

But let's talk about the positive benefits:

A smoothie is fast. You throw together the ingredients in a few minutes, just putting them in the canister of your blender.  Frozen is fine, and very cheap and convenient- fresh is also fine if you have it- even woody, past-their-prime veggies from the garden, including stalks and stems are fine in a Vitamix blender- they are completely liquified!

So, there is the basic recipe for the Paleo Quick Start Smoothie!  Simple, fast, and very satisfying; but the main point is this- it is all the nutrition you need for optimal health, ready for you!

The other advantages?  A smoothie is bioavailable.  The cell walls are all broken down, rendering the nutrition locked inside readily available for digestion.  The nutrients you put in the smoothie are ready to absorb!

A smoothie is transportable.  I drink a glass of  about 8 ounces or so each morning along with breakfast; sometimes it is my breakfast... (did I say fast and easy?)  Then, I carry along two 8 oz. canning jars full in my insulated lunch box, which I drink spaced throughout the day...  this not only keeps me in complete nutrient heaven, but keeps me completely hydrated throughout the day.  

The smoothie is ALL IN ONE.  If you want, all you need, all day long, is in that simple drink!  Nothing else is necessary; I like to think of everything else I consume as "recreational eating", with the exception of seafood and organ meats, which don't need to be "every day" meals.

There is no waste, and it is really quite cheap: You get a huge "bang for your buck" with a Paleo smoothie, since every tiny BIT is consumed- if there is any left over, you can either drink it the next day, or freeze it!  

The smoothie fills you up totally- you will not be hungry at all, all day.  This benefit is huge; the good fats, protein and everything else your body needs satisfies your body so that it doesn't constantly cry out for more more more!  You will not even be tempted by your co-worker's donuts!

And lastly, the smoothie tastes good, but not "too good"!
That may sound strange, but we are currently surrounded by engineered foods that taste so good that we cannot resist them. (Especially if we are lacking in nutrients from a normal American SAD diet, and our bodies are constantly hungry)  They are really hungry for nutrition, but all our bodies can say is eat eat eat!  When you drink enough of your smoothie, you don't want any more.  You are satisfied!

So there you go- no excuses- this is the easiest way to adopt the Paleo Diet that there is!  

Do it!!  And make enough for the whole family- that's easy too, with a Paleo Smoothie.

A Vitamix is a chewing machine!

OK- here I am with a Green Drink from my Vitamix-  Paleo Smoothie!  I would be hard-pressed to eat this many vegetables in a day, much less chew them enough to ensure adequate digestion!  With a Vitamix doing the "chewing" for me, this is not a problem!

Lots of us are not that enamored of eating lots and lots of vegetables... understandable!

But, just add them to the Vitamix canister, along with some natural berries and other fruits, coconut milk, and- well, here is the blog with the recipe list included: paleo smoothie recipe

It's part of a blog about "Shakeology", but it's there...  and it works!  Way more detail in my 1st eBook,
Paleo Quick Start, but you can just take the recipe and go!  And variations are not only acceptable, but encouraged.  More veggies- more variety- more health!  Your garden (or your Farmer's Market!) is your  Palette- draw from it- add to your health.


I know from experience that most folks resist buying a Vitamix:
  1. Too expensive
  2. Too big of a change of lifestyle (versus pouring cereal and milk into a bowl...)
  3. Seems "weird"- putting veggies and "strange" liquids (kefir, raw eggs, pastured butter, coconut milk, green tea) into a blender....
Trust me, have you priced a diagnosis of cancer or diabetes lately?

WAY more than a Vitamix.  

If things in our health care system made sense, then our health insurance would cover a Vitamix, cod liver oil, perfect pushup devices, pull-up bars, and such like...

but our health care system makes no sense whatsoever, which is why it (and we) are going broke!

But you don't have to go down this self-destructive path-  

Take the conservative approach- don't rely on Government!  Provide for your own health!

Eat good, real, natural, God-made foods!  
Do natural, non-machine, real body exercise!!
SLEEP a LOT!
Have good personal connections- a "Tribe" or "Family" with which you connect...

Do all of the above, and you will be a healthy, happy, spiritually fulfilled, and FIT cave person!

Get ready for Summer- darken your skin with a Paleo Smoothie!


I know- it's a picture used before, but it helps illustrates what I'm saying here:

Eat a paleo diet heavy with veggies and fruit, throw in everything else in the Paleo Smoothie, and you will actually darken your skin, naturally!


This may dismay light colored people, but by eating/drinking lots of carrots and tomatoes, your actual skin tone will darken!  It is kind of like a "permanent tan", and is actually just a glow of health!  People really don't know how to react to it: they will ask you if you have been on vacation, or if your are using a tanning bed...

But the true answer is you are just really healthy, and replete with the vitamins and minerals that the rest of the pasty, semi-sick, Standard American Diet-ers are sadly lacking.


It really has reached the point where average folks don't even recognize health!  Health has become an aberration- most modern Americans have never really seen a truly healthy person!!


So, they don't really understand why you seem "different".  Understandable, really...

You eat vegetables and fruits, they eat donuts and pizza.  You eat grass-fed beef, they eat chicken nuggets that are "quasi-meat".  You have pastured eggs for breakfast, and they have cereal with skim milk...

They are sick, and you are well!

It is sad, but very, very true that most people in the modern day Western World are...SICK!  The diets they consume are such that their intestines are inflamed, letting contaminants migrate into their bodies, and the nutrients they do consume are incredibly inadequate, and so they are sick, but in such a marginal way that our current drug-based medical system doesn't even recognize the problem.

High blood sugar?  Take insulin!
High Cholesterol?  Take statins!

The list of maladies and their supposed "cures" goes on and on...


Wouldn't you like to address and cure the CAUSE??

I know I would.  

Don't just put a "band-aid" on your problems, as the conventional medical establishment would have you do...

CURE THE PROBLEM!  

Eat a Paleo, "real foods" diet!

Eliminate grains and other "fake foods" like LOW FAT garbage and margarine!

Eat good fats like pastured butter, coconut oil, and pastured/Kerrygold types of butter!

Get sugar and other processed foods out of your life!!

These steps will have the additional benefit of getting those aforementioned drugs out of your life!!!!!!!

You really, really, really do NOT want those drugs in your life, or in your body!  Trust me:  I am

PaleoJay!
 And my skin is quite dark, for a White Man!

Hungry For Change!

Spirulina powder- the latest super-food addition to the Paleo Smoothie!






Just when you thought you'd seen everything that could be crammed into a Vitamix blender, well... you haven't!  Trust me, I don't make "changes for the sake of change". Only when I find something that is a real improvement to the Paleo Smoothie, (which I think is a lynchpin in the foundation of a truly Paleo-esque, nutrition packed lifestyle); only then to I change the "formula"!

Here is the latest addition to the Paleo Smoothie- about 1 Tablespoon per canister of spirulina powder.

You will be too; just read a bit: spirulina super food (a Blog devoted entirely to... spirulina.

Suffice it to say, this blue/green algae called spirulina is not the same ingredient we use called Kelp.  Both are great additions; but kelp is a seaweed, and while loaded with micro-nutrients, it is a significant source of iodine.  A strict paleo diet can sometimes be lacking here, so I think including kelp is an excellent strategy!

Spirulina is, again, an algae, and has a different nutrient profile than kelp.  Both are great, but spirulina has the advantage of being a big helper in weight loss, and is also a super protein supplement- it is a complete protein, (like eggs or meat) which is very unusual in a plant source.

In other words, spirulina somehow manages to be "plant-animal-fresh-water seafood", all in one!

Here is an interesting tidbit:

Some scientists speculate that the "manna" of the wandering Israelites, which appeared miraculously on rocks following a devastating dry spell and was described as tasting "like wafers made with hone " may have been a form of dried, dormant Spirulina.

So, if it could keep the Israelites alive in their wanderings, just think what Spirulina can do for you!

Paleo Golf!

Actually, golfing is a wonderful, paleo-esque activity!  Really!

Think about it: long, leisurely hikes (like through the savannah), similar to tracking game...  lots of "slow-twitch" muscle fiber actions (chipping and putting), and just a few drives-(fast twitch power moves- like throwing a spear!)

A few interactions with hostile tribesmen (Judge Smails aka Ted Knight),


 and also a lot of interactions with characters such as Rodney Dangerfield (aka Al Czervik),

 and witch- doctor Ty Webb (Chevy Chase)... you get the idea!  Bushwood Country Club is a Paleo landscape!

Carl (Bill Murray) is a caveman, right on the country club scene!

And then, after a long, arduous (sort of) game of golf, you go to the clubhouse for  a big feast of prime rib or it's equivalent!

Talk about hunt-effort-reward!

So, why is there no mention of golf in Paleo discussions??

I think it is because Paleo/Primal folks are so strength training dominant.  Not that there is anything, per se wrong with that at all- training for strength is key in body composition and overall health, but there is also a huge role for the long, slow movement, punctuated by sudden bursts of high intensity effort that typified the lives of our primeval ancestors!  And, plaid pants and white belts aside:


Golf is IDEAL for this!!


I almost feel a bit like Martin Luther, saying this to the Catholic church hierarchy... but, it's true:

Golf is Paleo!!

There, I said it.  But, before you imagine me playing loud "Caddyshack" music from my golf bag, ala Rodney Dangerfield, and buying a plethora of "Naked Lady tee's", let me stress that I have some definite golf training ideas that Rodney, not to mention Judge Smails would not agree with!!

OK, you have a normal golf "swing", right?  

Well, you also need a "left" golf swing (if you are right handed!)

The normal, "Transformetric" "Visualized resistance", Maxalding or "Dynamic tension"; whatever you call it-these exercises will dramatically increase your strength... and your overall golf game!!

Getting stronger, NATURALLY, will not only help your health, but will REVITALIZE your GOLF GAME!!

But for now, let me tell you one, invaluable golf tip:

Just swing from the other side!

Yup, if you are right-handed, practice swinging from the left side!

And, left-handed: do the reverse.  Right side swinging...


BUT, do it slowly, VISUALIZED, with resistance being generated from within, TENSING the muscles of the swing as you go!

Do it maybe 10 times, slowly...

Then, do it the right way, using your dominant (either right or left side depending), and also use the visualized resistance; making it hard, and flexing the working muscles intentionally.

This self resistance is going to build strength a lot, and doing it in reverse will balance out your development, and save your spine.  (The curse of golfers from swinging from one side forever!)

This exercise will only take you a few minutes per day...

But will turn you from a Judge Smails wannabe to..

A Ty Webb(Chevy Chase) golfing guru!!

Even Carl will be impressed!!

Perfectly Paleo Exercise as Play, with Visualized Resistance!




Here is a photo of Maxick- a strongman from early in the last century.  He trained almost exclusively with muscle control exercises, which is another form of saying visualized resistance.  He lifted weights, not to develop his muscles, but to exhibit the strength he had developed!
This is an extreme example of Visualized Resistance Training, "muscle control", or "Dynamic Tension"-whatever you choose to call it!
In the photo above, taken for a beer company ad, he pressed the heavyweight boxing champion of England over his head with one arm...16 times, without spilling a drop of the glass of beer held in his other hand!  The English champion weighed 205, Maxick a mere 147 pounds!  Real world strength indeed!    His system of training was called 'Maxalding"... more later.  Let's get training!



Paleo workouts as “play”!
It may seem strange to think of workouts, which we have come to think of as something grueling, something to dread... as “PLAY”!  And yet, that is exactly how I’d like for you to start thinking of your training- play time!  
How can this be?   
Well, when I first awaken in the morning (quite early, I might add!), the first thing I do is to do a little sequence of awakening exercises.  This little sequence literally takes less that two minutes, and is not taxing at all- but, taking your joints and limbs into just such an untaxing warmup and “lubrication” before anything else, and it sets the tone mentally for your entire day!  Not to mention, it gently wakes you up in a natural and pleasant way:

Simple as that looks, it is critical for your physical well-being to begin your day in such a manner!


After I’ve made my Paleo Quick Start Smoothie for the day, and a thermos of green or white tea along with a cup of coffee for later, I go from kitchen to living room, carrying a mug of steaming tea...I feel great; warmed up physically and mentally, fully awake, well rested (I always try to get at least 8 hours of good, quality sleep in a totally lightless bedroom).  
I am ready to train- but, this doesn’t mean I’m not ready to also have some fun!  So, I turn on my television, and usually turn on streaming NETFLIX as well, since using Netflix I can “pick up where I left off” in whatever movie I was watching, just as if I was marking the place in a book with a bookmark... but, watch what you will, or don’t if you please.  Just get ready to have some fun!  Because gradually and naturally exploring your own musculature, and gently testing your limits, is actually a rejuvenating and renewing process- one that just plain feels good!  That’s why animals do it, and that’s why we should do it too!

All of the exercises you need to fully develop your physique naturally, safely, and aesthetically are here- really!  You can add other physical training, and you probably will as your vastly improved, nutrient dense, Paleo or Ancestral Diet begins remaking the cells in your body into healthy ones!  Soon, your body will start to divest itself of inflammation, that endless state of chronic stress put into our modern bodies by the vast amounts of genetically altered grains, industrial seed oils, and vast amounts of sugar in all it’s various forms- corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, low fat dairy- all of those things that spike our insulin levels and irritate our gut linings...
This double whammy puts us into stress, elevating our cortisol (stress hormone), while at the same time starving us of the very nutrients our bodies need to fight off this stress, along with the further stress of “anti-nutrients” invading our damaged gut linings, and setting us up for a vast array of autoimmune diseases!    So, the moral of the story is this:
FIRST get your diet in order!  Paleo Diet, with a big green morning smoothie is the easiest, most effective way to do this!
SLEEP!  Lots!

Maxalding was the name of the Visualized Exercise system sold by Maxick for decades..

Just so you know that this form of training has a long, very repectable tradition behind it-
But, like the long tradition behind our Ancestral Diets, that information has been largely forgotten in our new, low-fat, high carb, S.A.D. Standard American Diet of the past 50 years.  
It is time to relearn BOTH traditions!

Barney Fife- PALEO MAN!

How much we have forgotten!  Back in 1964, almost 50 years ago, common knowledge was that carbohydrates; i.e. sugar and it's near-twin- BREAD, were really harmful, both for controlling weight, and for preserving overall health!

Even Barney Fife knew it!!  Aunt Bea surely did, but just didn't have the will power to resist her own cooking...   I'll bet even Gomer and OTIS knew it!!  There's not an episode to prove it, but there surely could have been one where Otis, hungover in jail after another binge, refuses Aunt Bea's dessert offering on the grounds that it might "damage his health and physique".

So, take this brief message to heart!  Every time someone offers you "Carbohydrates and Glucose"-

Just say no!

I will thank you, your body will thank you, Andy will thank you, and Aunt Bea might even switch over to a stevia/wild honey sweetened filling  and coconut flour piecrust!! (What would Clara say?)

And you know that Barney will thank you!

Carbohydrates and glucose are dangerous- Andy made Barney keep them in his pocket... like his dangerous, evil bullet.

You should too!

Vitamix for baby food, toddlers, and children of ALL ages!




 I only wish I had had a Vitamix to make fruit-and-veggie, coconut milk and kefir, egg and full-fat cream concotions for my daughter when she was really young!  (She's still young, and really healthy since her diet was revamped once I knew what was what and she was still around 20...)

But still!  The earlier, by far the better!  


Eliminate the grains- half the battle!

Introduce all the ultra-healthy foods to displace those bad ones-  the other half!


Imagine, growing up with not grain induced gut irritation, no "leaky gut" letting toxins into the child's bloodstream...  No hyper, nervous, ADD kids, just calm healthiness, wanting to learn and play!


All of these things are not only possible, but very available, given the proper knowledge and tools.  


I believe the major tool for raising healthy children would be a...

  1. "Start healthy habits in the high chair."

    Babies who start out eating healthful foods grow up into adults with a good dietary foundation. Many pediatricians recommend parents make their own baby food, rather than feed infants commercially prepared foods that are often full of water, starch, sugar or meat fillers. Homemade baby food can provide better nutrition at a fraction of the cost.

    Preparing baby food is easy. Simply steam or gently cook the healthful ingredients of your choice, from carrots and peas to sweet potatoes, apples or pears, then puree them. For optimum health benefits, puree cooked foods with a little water in a powerful blender like the Vitamix Super 5000. There you go: how to raise much healthier kids!  It really is that easy.  And believe it or not- much cheaper and more convenient to boot.

If you've decided to prepare your own food for baby, congratulations! By doing so, you're serving up two of life's greatest gifts - good health and delicious food.
When you use your Vitamix machine to make your own baby food, you'll know what's going into your baby's diet and what's not -- like preservatives, fillers, extra sodium and sugar!

My family Vitamix history over a bowl of pumpkin soup!


I love my Vitamix!  Tonight I made a pumpkin soup from the cookbook included with all new Vitamixes called "Whole Food Recipes".  It's quite a nice cookbook!

As I assembled the ingredients together, I thought back over the past......amazingly, my Grandmother Mary Manthey, from South Dakota bought one of the first models back in the 1930's!  I never knew this until my own mother, Carolyn, told me after I had bought my first Vitamix!  Mine was an old 1980's model from eBay, and I got it for about $70.00. It had a stainless steel canister and base- you can see me holding it on my eBook cover to the right...  I still have it; it has transformed both my family's and my own health dramatically!
I used it for several years, and just recently upgraded to the new Vitamix 5200.  Here it is, loaded with the pumpkin, seeded apple, onion, nutmeg, white pepper and sea salt.  I ran it for 7 minutes, added a little cream and...WOW!  Your Vitamix is just as valuable in the evening for soups as it is vital in the mornings for your Paleo Quick Start Smoothie!

My Grandmother Mary, who lived almost to 100, was an active, healthy woman her entire life.  She continued to volunteer at the nursing home right up to the end, helping out folks younger than herself.  Here she is in an old video made for Cable TV with her daughters (Paula, Janey and Carolyn) and my father Phil from 1989.  She was 94!  



She still had years left before her of vitality and good living- I credit it partly to her lifelong Vitamix usage!
Can you imagine the general public's deterioration of nutrition she witnessed during her long life!

Has your food changed over the past 100 years?


According to a recent study at the University of Colorado the nutrient density of food has declined significantly over the past 100 years. In fact nutrient density has declined approximately 40-60% over the past 100 years. That means that our food today typically has 50% fewer nutrients compared to the food that our grandparents ate. Nutrients such as the vitally important vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and phytochemicals are the foundation of healthy cells and a strong body. Today if you ate the same amount of vegetables that your grandparents ate you would only receive half the nutrients. Also your grandparent consumed on average 131 pounds of homegrown vegetables every year compared to 11 pounds today. And a recent study showed that only 11% of Americans eat 2 fruits and 3 vegetables every day. This unhealthy combination of nutrient poor foods and reduced intake is an open door for disease especially if it is applied over a lifetime. You can begin to reverse this trend today by simply making a conscious effort to include fresh, organic if possible, vegetables and fruit to every meal. A simple reminder with each is meal is to ask your self this question, “Is the majority of my food naturally produced and processed by God or has it been processed by man? I want to encourage you to brighten up your plate today with the colorful and nutritious foods that our Lord created for us.

The vested interests are in selling subsidized grain, highly profitable processed foods, and in keeping alive the myth that All Fat is BAD- EAT MORE GRAINS!
