Shakeology or Paleo Smoothie?

Or even (gasp) Real Food??!!  Is that even an option?

You bet it is!

I recently read about this Shakeology guy in a business magazine.  It appears that this young, model-type of guy, Darin Olien, is the spokesmodel for this multi-level marketing powdered shake mix, that is affiliated with the much-hyped on TV P90X exercise DVD outfit.

I was curious, since it was a "shake" or smoothie type of deal... so I checked it all out online.

Bottom line?

Darin travels the globe, looking for rare, and probably magical fruits, tubers, nuts, whatever, and then cutting deals with the locals to provide them for his dehydrated Shakeology drinks!  This enables you, the consumer, to purchase these powdered shake-things to mix up in your blender, and replace meals with!  (Sounds eerily like the Paleo Quick Start Smoothie, right?)  Just mix it up with water, almond milk, or extra-sugary juice (it doesn't really matter, does it?) and voila- Shakeology!

I include the ingredient list below; nothing in it is really bad.  Wheat grass, Barley grass, Kamut grass- not so great.  Whey protein, hey, OK.  But at $120.00 for 30 servings... YIKES!!

Here is my own Paleo Smoothie ingredient list, replete with nutrition, that you can easily make yourself.  The nutrition levels are about as good as it gets:

Quick Paleo Smoothie ingredients list:
My current recipe- variations are not only possible, but encouraged! But the base outlined here is very representative of a transformative replacement meal/ultimate real food supplement in one tasty drink!
Here is part one of the Paleo Quick Start Smoothie:

Coconut Milk- 1 can
Coconut oil and/or red Palm oil- 2 Tablespoons
Carlson’s or Nordic Naturals Cod liver oil- 1 Tablespoon
Powdered kelp- 1 teaspoon
Unsweetened kefir- 1/4 cup
Organic, unsweetened lemon juice- 1 teaspoon
Apple cider vinegar- 1 teaspoon
1-2 cups of green tea
cinnamon- 1 tsp- also great on coffee and whipped cream! (Fresh ground is best-
I use a coffee grinder)
Frozen spinach- approximately 1 cup
Frozen mixed “California Mix” vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots), ~1 cup
Frozen mixed berries- blueberries, raspberries, strawberries- 1 cup
1/2 banana (I freeze mine so they don’t over-ripen)
1 peeled orange
2 raw, organic free range eggs (optional)

Since publishing my ebook, I have begun adding the dried, powdered varieties of:
turmeric 1 tsp
ginger 1 tsp
Both are strong anti-inflammatory agents, among many other benefits.
I have also started substituting dried coconut milk powder for the canned coconut milk..
This is optional, but is cheaper, and more convenient as well!

Part 2-
That’s it! You can also “mix and match” with fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables you have on hand- cranberries are a favorite of mine, as is liquid vitamin D in the Winter months!

Part 3-

The beauty of this drink, besides its being economical, real food, is that it has everything that your body and mind need to thrive!!  Nothing exotic, but really, exotic is really not necessary...it just makes good marketing.

Save your money!

It's a multi-level marketing scheme, and I believe P90X is right in the same ballpark- home grown versions of exercise (see www.transformetrics.com) are even more effective, and do-able long term.

With all the money you save by avoiding these bogus fitness schemes, you can buy a real fitness tool- a Vitamix Blender, to make your own Paleo Smoothies!!

And, you can also get a Weber Grill and a slow cooker to make...  real food!!  (What a concept!)

You may have enough money left over to buy a chin-up bar, a set of perfect pushup devices, and make your own kettlebell- now you have all you will ever need for fitness AND nutrition!!

Forget the multilevel marketing versions of health- Do it yourself!
Try Perfectly Paleo Exercise, which also has a LARGE section on nutrition.

Go AGAINST THE GRAIN!

This is a great interview of Mark Sisson by Sean Croxton!

The final takeaway is this:  DITCH GRAINS!

There is no upside to bread, wraps, chips, tacos, buns, cereal... you get my drift!

If you only do one thing for your health-

DON'T EAT GRAINS!!

I can't be any clearer than that.  Grains will irritate your gut lining, and make you prone to all of the diseases of modern civilization like diabetes, cancer, heart disease, obesity, depression- the list goes on and on...

Eliminating them is really not that hard, especially if you start your day with a Paleo Smoothie, so you are completely replete with nutrition from hour ONE, and then just eat meat, nuts, seeds, fermented dairy like cheese and Greek yogurt, vegetables slathered with butter, and fruit.

So, as a memory device just remember to GO AGAINST THE GRAIN!

Literally, that is one half (at least) of the battle for your health, right there.

Train like a Tiger!

MovNat- the workout that the world forgot!

I will let this video by Erwan Le Corre speak for itself:

So, what is the BEST way to train?  Once again, let's here what Erwan has to say:

"What is the best fitness regimen for a tiger? The case for authentic human movement.
What is the best way to exercise?  How do you become fit?  What is the most effective method for optimal physical development?  Nowadays, there are hundreds, if not thousands of fitness concepts offered, all promising to get you in shape in no time, often presenting themselves as “revolutionary” or being the outcome of “cutting-edge science”.  The fitness industry is providing such a plethora and variety of offers that it has become quite confusing for the average person in search of an exercise solution.  Body-building, “functional fitness”, cardio- training, Bootcamp, Pilates, yoga, Tae Bo, Zumba, P90X, Insanity or others.  Which one to choose?
Now I have a very simple, yet powerfully thought-provoking question for you:
What is the best fitness regimen for a tiger (or a tigress)?

Does the question make you smile?  Does it sound irrelevant or stupid?  And, most importantly, what’s the answer?  How would you train a wild tiger so it can be fit?  Would you train it by doing weight lifting and cardio training on the side?  Could you imagine a tiger running on a treadmill while checking its pulse rate, without cracking up?  Or could it be that it doesn’t need to exercise at all, being genetically, i.e. naturally fit?
Here’s the right answer: in order to become and stay optimally fit, a tiger needs to move the way tigers move in their natural biome.  It is that simple.  Tigers will move naturally when they’re free to live the natural life every tiger should live; as will all other wild animals.
Throughout their entire life and without discontinuity, wild animals will move the way nature and evolution intends them to, simply because in nature, moving naturally and staying fit is essentially a matter of survival.  If you can’t move, you’re inexorably condemned to an imminent death.  Every newborn animal will start developing his or her species-specific movement aptitudes very early for this very reason.
Bird doing a "wing muscles workout"?
Dolphin "functional fitness" exercise?
Squirrel burning calories through agility drills?
Snake engaging the "core"?
Young human being moving naturally even in unnatural environments
The young “human animal” possesses the exact same drive to move.  He wants to move naturally all the time, even in artificial, man-made environments.  Call them “hyperactive” or “ADD” as much as you want, but kids know what’s important and priority, and moving is important and priority to them.  It is a “built-in” program, a fundamental part of their genetic agenda, just like in any other young animal.  Can you expect children to become healthy and fit if you deprive them of their evolutionary birthright to natural motion?  Should you wait until they are in their teenage years to expose them to “real” fitness and give them video games to play in the meantime?  Lastly, why should such an evolutionarily natural movement activity be reserved to and practiced by only children?
More questions:
If wild animals can become extremely fit this natural way, why on Earth should it be any different for humans?  Because they’re animals and we’re not?  Because we are smart and they’re not?  Because we are more advanced and evolved today?  Or…
Because we know better?
There are fundamental questions that need to be addressed in my opinion: can we reinvent ourselves?  And, if yes, to what extent?  Can we discard our “true nature”, i.e. our universal, biological nature, which includes our human species-specific movement aptitudes?
While humans today are being presented with thousands of alternatives to keep in shape, how many of them are relevant to our own essential human species-specific movement needs and potential?
pastedGraphic_7.pdf
Serious fitness?
I believe, and can actually observe, that an overwhelming majority of the modern fitness industry has completely lost sight of our original physical aptitudes.  It provides methods that are significantly divorced from our original movement modes.  The muscle isolation approach does not work.  The body does not work in isolation, but through and thanks to movement.
There is more to building a body that just growing muscles.  And there is more to building a being that just building their body.  Lastly, people get bored!  Why would you stick to doing anything that doesn’t feel natural to you?  Isn’t there a way we can physically and optimally develop ourselves, while staying faithful to our evolutionarily natural heritage?
You see, in our modern world, all fitness regimens are accessory and optional.  It is up to each and every individual to decide if they want to exercise or not, and how.  Even walking has already become an option.  But like it or not, moving naturally still is, and always will be a biological necessity.  When you are not respecting the needs of your true biological nature, you become a “zoo-human” and the price to pay is physical, mental, and even spiritual suffering.
So isn’t it high time for a healthy and meaningful paradigm shift in the way society and the fitness industry approaches fitness?  In the way you are personally approaching exercising?  Aren’t you thirsty for authentic human movement?"
Erwan Le Corre
Founder of MovNat and Master Instructor

I agree wholeheartedly with Erwan's ideas!

But, I do have some insights that will ADD to what he has to offer, I think in a very productive, and under-utilized vein of physical culture.  Too much for today, I will make it the focus of my next post.

Is Paleo "Barbarian"?

Are we, as followers of the paleo diet,  more like this dying Gaul below than the civilized Romans?
Let me throw some ideas your way:

From what I've been able to glean, the Gauls were primarily meat and dairy eaters.  They also raised grain, and used a good bit of it to make beer- a beverage that the wine drinking Greeks and Romans found disgusting.  They did also have bread, and porridge made from grains and lentils, but from all indications this was kind of "back burner" food- the preference of these tribal barbarians was for meat, cheese, and butter, of which they had quantities available; both from the widely available hunting, and the herds they kept. They also had vegetable gardens, but of course the white potato was unknown.  The northlands they dwelt in had not been overgrazed, which was the case around the Mediterranean, the erstwhile "Fertile Crescent", which had been overgrazed for centuries since the dawn of civilization there, and was beginning to gradually turn to desert.

The Romans were a largely predatory civilization, and had become rather puny physically over time compared to the barbarian Gauls... they were victorious over the Gauls and others not from physical superiority, but through a specialization of warfare technique that made each soldier function as a cog in a giant machine of disciplined warfare, rather than using individual initiative.

Here is a good description of the diet of the Romans around the time, 2nd Century BC, that our gladiator friend above lived (and died) in:

"The lower class Romans (plebeians) might have a dinner of porridge made of vegetables, or, when they could afford it, fish, bread, olives, and wine, and meat on occasion.

Since many of the lower class were citizens, the ancient Romans had a program to help them, somewhat like a welfare program. The welfare program was called the annona.

There was also a separate WIC-type or school-lunch program (the alimenta), just for kids, which was instituted, or at least greatly developed in early 2c CE.

In the regular food welfare system, people were issued welfare stamps, which were little tokens, called tesserae. How these were issued (remember there was no open public postal system), and how Romans identified themselves to the authorities in the first place, we (the authors of this article) do not know. You showed up with your tokens (tesserae) and containers, at large government warehouses. You got wheat flour -- or bread already baked from government bakeries, and other foodstuffs. Meat was distributed on special occasions with special tokens."

This is interesting, not only in the rather Paleo type diet of the Gauls, and the modern, civilized, grain based diet of the Romans, but in the social governmental control being used by the Roman government in its "dole", or Welfare system.

Perhaps it is an inevitable development of civilization to use low quality food as a means to control their populations?

Here is a quote from the seminal science fiction author Philip K. Dick:
"We live in a society in which spurious realities are manufactured by the media, by governments, by big corporations, by religious groups, political groups. I ask, in my writing, What is real? Because unceasingly we are bombarded with pseudorealities manufactured by very sophisticated people using very sophisticated electronic mechanisms. I do not distrust their motives. I distrust their power. It is an astonishing power: that of creating whole universes, universes of the mind. I ought to know. I do the same thing."

To me, this sounds like a description of the current state of affairs between Big Government, Big Pharma, and the Big Processed Food manufacturers- manipulating us with sophisticated marketing, selling us fake, non- nutritional foods that
  1. Keep us misinformed
  2. Keep us sick
  3. keep us addicted to the foods they sell that make us sick
  4. Keep us reliant on expensive drugs that they sell
I've always revered and loved the glory that was Greece and Rome.  But now, I'm starting to think rather often of a quote from the author Robert E. Howard, from his most popular hero Conan the Barbarian-

"Barbarism is the natural state of mankind. Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph."

What do you think?  Am I a little paranoid here, or not?

Coconut! Does it do EVERYTHING??

Coconut!

Coconut oil...

And now- Coconut Charcoal!!

Is there any end to the miracles this nut/fruit supplies??!!
The OIL has been shown to be beneficial to eat: it is anti-bacterial, and can actually help you to lose weight.  When I first started adding a can of coconut milk per day to my Paleo Smoothie, I was shocked to lose 4-5 pounds in a week- and I didn't even try, or even think I needed to lose weight!
I believe it was visceral fat; fat around my organs that I wasn't even aware of, but is the most unhealthy body fat of all.

I have always used canned coconut milk; which is always a good choice.  But lately, I have gotten...

Dry coconut milk powder!

I was able to buy it in bulk, from a wholesale provider, so it is quite economical.  Also, it is quite convenient, as you can just scoop out a few scoops of the powder to add to your paleo smoothie.  No opening of and disposing of a can, and the water weight of the canned milk is not added- leaving you with more room for even more nutrient dense foods in your drink!

The Smoothie becomes a bit smaller, with even more nutrients per cup.  And there is more room in the smoothie for kefir, green tea, whatever!  It is a sensible addition to your Paleo quick start strategy.

And coconut oil?

Each morning, before showering, I take a teaspoonful in my mouth, and just.. rinse it around my mouth while I shower!  So, maybe 10 minutes of this "oil pulling", and my mouth is de-acidified, all bacteria are flushed out, and I'm ready to:

Take some more coconut oil, and, after warming it in my hands (it is Winter!), I rub it over my body, and especially on my face for shaving.  This is the best thing ever you could shave with!  Very close, smooth shave... and amazingly, your blade will last almost forever!  (It's lubricated constantly, and so doesn't really rust of degrade).

So, after adding coconut oil and dried coconut milk to my morning paleo smoothie, how else do I use the coconut

After I come home from work, I fire up the grill with:  coconut charcoal!

Really, this is a big one!  The charcoal burns hotter than other charcoals, even hotter than natural, "Cowboy" types of charcoal.  It is made from coconut shells, and natural coconut by-products- no petroleum adjuncts ala "Kingsford" types of charcoal.  This means that, not only is the heat really HOT and even, but the ash production and smoke are substantially LESS.

This really is a case of "Once you try it, you won't go back!"

So, spend your day with coconut products.  That's what our ancestors did!

Ok, done that?  Good- let's talk leptin!
Bottom line:  A high fat, low carb, low sugar diet will keep your leptin happy.  When your leptin is "happy" it will keep your appetite perfectly regulated, and keep you healthy and happy as well!

"Your brain is a servant of your fat, your brain is what fat uses to do its bidding, and your fat’s bidding will determine your lifespan.

Here’s a very brief review. Leptin was discovered about ten years ago. Produced by fat. It’s supposed to tell your hypothalamus how much fat you’ve got and whether to produce more fat. And whether you should keep eating to produce more fat or get rid of some excess. In our evolutionary history, it was good to store some fat. All of our ancestors encountered a famine. You needed to have a good energy source. Fat’s a good, efficient energy source, but it wasn’t good to be too fat, because if you were too fat, you were going to end up as a meal for another organism. Because if you are running from a lion in a group of people, which one is it going to catch? If you got too fat, the lion catches you, because you can’t run up a tree. And those genes would have been eliminated from the gene pool. Leptin tells the brain how much fat there is, and whether you should get more fat or you shouldn’t..
Which means, leptin controls whether or not you’re hungry."

Ron Rosedale

It really is amazing how powerful the role of leptin is in the human body.  Leptin, if kept at natural, low levels by eating a Paleo type of diet, with no grains (which turn to sugar in the mouth!), and of course very little sugar itself, and moderate protein and high levels of good, natural fat.  (Think of avocados, coconut oil, full fat butter, etc.)

Did you know that it is quite possible, and actually rather common to be "skinny fat", or "metabolically obese"?   There are plenty of non-overweight people who are afflicted with "fat people" diseases:
Diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and a host of others...

Their fat is stored "viscerally", meaning it is around and within the organs themselves.  It doesn't show up much on the outside, but it sure raises the leptin levels that destroy them from the inside out!

"How can one hormone make a difference in all these different things? It has to do with leptin’s ability to control the rate of aging. Aging, or the lack of it, is determined by proper communication. When that communication goes awry, all kinds of things go wrong."  Ron Rosedale
In other words, if you allow your leptin levels to rise, by eating the Standard American Diet or high carbs, high sugar, and low fat, you are setting yourself up for bad signals from the master hormone, leptin:

  1. Metabolic syndrome, or Syndrome X
  2. Increasing fat, which results in even higher leptin levels
  3. ALL of the modern diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular problems, acid reflux, etc.
  4. Vastly increased rate of aging

So, it is in your best interests in every aspect to follow a High Fat Low Carb diet!  HFLC, or in other words a Paleo type of diet!

Sleep!

What could be more natural and important than sleep?

The answer is: almost nothing is!

Sleep is so important, that it is one of the most potent bio-markers of health itself.  If you sleep well, and long (at least 7 & 1/2 hours per night minimum), this shows that you are a basically healthy and happy animal!

If you have trouble sleeping... uh oh!  This is a strong indicator, in and of itself, that something is wrong:

Too much stress?  Bad diet?  Not enough, or too much exercise? (Probably too much cardio type)
Soft drinks and other crap in your diet?

All of the above can mess up your sleep, which messes up your attitude, which messes up your health and your life!

Really, in a Paleo concept, how important is sleep?

1. Good, nutrient dense nutrition.  The maximum nutrients in every morsel of food you eat.
2. Sleep!
3. Sun exposure, clean water, good family and extended family (i.e. "Tribe") relations and life.
4. Minimal toxins in environment and food and air.
5. Exercise  (brief, intense, invigorating, and throughout a complete range of motion, including stretching and all forms of exercise short of going to failure!)

So there you have it!  Sleep only comes after your nutrition.  Without good nutrition, good sleep is impossible.  And without good, quality sleep, your "tribal" or personal relations in life are hugely compromised, to the point where you are so stressed out that you don't even care about crucial things like good water, sun on your skin, or minimizing the toxins in your environment!

And if you don't have all of the above, exercise will only add more cortisol, the stress hormone to the mix, and spiral you further down the hole!

So sleep!  Make it a priority. Sleep is more important than exercise.

Much more important!  (and a heck of a lot easier too!)

Especially this Winter time of year, it is natural for us all in Northern climes to be more sedentary and reflective, to "hunker down" in the "cave" with our "tribe", and just chill out.

Not only natural, but beneficial!

So, just do it- go to bed early- really early!  Enjoy it!  Get up early too!  Enjoy the feeling of getting up early, and feeling fully rested, because you went to bed early enough.  Do your stretches, make your Paleo Quick Start Smoothie, do your Transformetrics exercises (No strain- no pain- just enjoy the feeling!)---

And then, start your day:

Invigorated, happy, loaded with nutrition, and, above all, completely rested!

I know it may sound trite, but this is truly the first day of the rest of your (Paleo) life!

Wind energy is a huge mistake!

I went to Illinois recently, back to my old college area in downstate Illinois.

I was horrified to see the seemingly endless rows of wind turbines, huge and ugly, defacing the flat croplands I had loved in the old days of the early 1970's...

Everywhere you go now, in central Illinois, there are huge, noisy, ugly, red-lighted (at night) monstrosities
everywhere you look!  It looks as if "War of the Worlds" has taken place, and the aliens won!!

Truly sick...   Only through government edict and tax-funded subsidies could such a negative, non-effective, and hideous "solution" to energy problems be even considered.

Did you know that currently, about 1/2 of 1% of our energy needs are met by "wind power"?

The "goal" is to...  double that!

Really?  Kill off our raptors and bats, deface our landscape, ruin small town American (and other country's) towns appearance and health, and gain...another 1/2% to reach 1% of our nations power??

On a windy day???

"A hundred plus years ago wind energy was recognized as an antiquated, unreliable and expensive source of energy, and now (after hundreds of billions of wasted dollars) we find that (surprise!) it still is an unreliable and expensive source of energy. This is what happens when science is relegated to a back-of-the-bus status."
What does this have to do with the Paleo Diet?

Well, I have come to think that Paleo Diet, and it's ramifications, affect nearly ALL of our modern, largely misguides, off-the-rails, and largely decadent way of life!

Sorry to be so blunt.

Just like Rome, and other previous civilizations, we are at a crossroads.  We are fixated on money, and power (it's twin) beyond a point where it even makes sense anymore.

Our food supply is fast becoming poison.   (All grains, industrial oils, and sugar with "fake" salt laced in)

We are becoming a nation of obese, sickly, diabetics and cancer/heart disease patients ready to happen, and all we can do is say:

Full speed ahead!  More money, more wind turbines, more drugs will save us!!
Who cares about old people who imagine progress makes them sick??

I have often thought that the Paleo Diet should really be called "the Barbarian Diet".  Think of a Germanic or Celtic barbarian, wandering into and seeing the Roman empire at it's decline...

If the technology had been there, trust me, there would have been:

  1. Wind farms that defaced the landscape with no appreciable gains in real power
  2. genetically modified grains
  3. industrial seed oils
  4. Sugar and "fake" salt laced into everything
  5. professional sports/circuses that sedentary folks avidly followed rather than physically participating in
The Barbarian, wandering into, and observing this madness, would have thought to himself:

"Here are a decadent folk, ripe for the picking!"
"I shall join their legions, pretend to follow their stupid ideas...

and the rest is history.

SO,
Be a barbarian!

TILT at (worthless) Windmills!  Be Don Quijote!!

EAT a joint of beef! Be Conan!!

And recognize the late Romans, and their counterparts, the 21st century American liberal elite as what they are:

Decadent, self-serving elites  that are set on certain, self-destructive ideas that will eventually destroy their own landscape (the fertile crescent of antiquity is now a desert!), but consequently also destroy the lives of the real people who want nothing to do with the decadence of their "rulers".

Forget your perceived rulers- Be A Barbarian-

BE CONAN!!

I love this illustration!
Just imagine that the APE man is-

  1. Wheat
  2. Wind turbines
  3. Industrial seed oils
  4. Sugar and "fake" salt
  5. (your choice here!!)
Isn't that cathartic??

I don't know about you, but I feel as if I had just killed Nero!  Yes!!!

J
