The FAT Elvis-ification of America- and the World!

Remember the OLD Elvis?  The one we all loved??  If you're old enough, like me, you sure do!

Elvis was the personification of what was really great about America- innovative, cutting edge, above all else real and authentic!


It was great- he was...Paleo Elvis!

What happened??


Elvis was of old, Yankee, "hillbilly" stock- he ate homegrown food, just real food, food that people had eaten for thousands of years- in his younger days.  I'm sure his parents bought local hogs, butchered nearby, traditional grass fed cattle, and ate a traditional type of diet in the 30's, 40's and 50's... the Elvis we think of in his prime was the result!

But Elvis made it big- really BIG!  

What did he want after his big score?  Well, he lived in a time (the 60's mainly) when the governmental mantra was "better living through chemistry".

This is the era we all find ourselves in now!  Natural, high fat foods are bad!  Stay away from red meat- ALL MEAT!!  Coconut oil and butter are HORRIBLE- Eat Industrial Seed Oils!!

Really?

Let's see what it did to Elvis...

One thing is, it made him big- really BIG!!

This is a total travesty- he was taking pharmaceutical drugs- he was convinced that since they were legitimate pharmaceutical, real drugs!, that they were beneficial!

Most Americans today feel the same- if their Medical Doctor thinks these drugs are fine (the Medical Doctor has been schooled by a Pharmaceutical Company that assures him they are wonderful!), well, then they should take those prescribed drugs- FOR LIFE!


The thing I know is this:

Eating a good, natural, real foods diet- similar to what our grandparents, great grandparents, and great-great grandparents ate... with no modern pharmaceuticals thrown in!!- 

WILL MAKE US MORE LIKE THE YOUNG ELVIS, not the sad travesty that modern pharmaceutical drugs and processed modern foods turned him into.

Elvis was a victim. The "Canary in the Coal mine"- signaling that disaster is ahead!  One of the early victims of the low-fat, high carb, high pharma intervention lifestyles...

But, he is the tip of the wave.

Diabesity is taking over-

Soon- just caring for our OBESE POPULATION WILL BANKRUPT THE U.S.!!

And, given our propensity for "spreading the word" -  This will spread Worldwide!!

I hate to "beat the same drum", but hey- we really need to get back to basics here!

EAT REAL FOOD!  

Just like our ancestors did:

Grass fed beef
Pastured chickens and eggs
Pastured butter and raw dairy
Cultured dairy
Full fat cream and raw milk
Non-GMO vegetables
Coconut oil and no industrial seed oils aka: Crisco, corn oils, peanut oils, canola oils, margarine, COOL WHIP aka "white salve"...

NON-GMO GRAINS!  (Almost unavailable- SO NO GRAINS AT ALL IS BEST!!!)


I think you get it now:  

Everything the FDA, the US Dept of Agriculture, and the Food Pyramid has recommended in the past, oh, 50 years or so...

is Wrong.  

It started out as an honest mistake...

But like most mistakes, it became, over time, an outright LIE!

The science is there. 

These agencies know that they are misleading you, and leading you into an Elvis End:

Visualized Resistance Exercise- How To!

Ok, today I show you a simple little video that you can easily replicate, and add into your daily routine!

This is the high reach, and is really good at both rehabbing shoulders, including the oft injured rotator cuff.  The key is to slowly move through the motion, feeling each part of the exercise by consciously tensing the musculature throughout- the back, the shoulders, the arms- all are gently yet very thoroughly exercised in this way.

The exciting part of this type of exercise, besides it being very convenient is that it is extremely safe.  You are always in control of the resistance, since you are supplying it yourself!  You can do this in front of the TV in your living room, outside in the sunlight and fresh air- virtually anywhere- and there is zero compression of your spine and other tissues.  It's just a really good way to go, with no downside; something you can't say about almost any other form of exercise!  It's free, it's easy to get started, it is very effective, and it leaves you feeling rejuvenated rather than drained!

Statin Nation- the Movie!

Do you take Statins?  

Nowadays, about 25% of people over the age of 45 now do!  Why do you think?

By 2003, atorvastatin(the statin mainstay) became the best-selling pharmaceutical in history, with Pfizer reporting sales of US$12.4 billion in 2008.

It's even more now!

Statins, i.e. Lipitor, Crestor, Torvast- the list goes on and on...


Statin drugs are a HUGE moneymaker for the drug companies!



But, what about YOU??


I disagree with the "limit red meat" part, as long as the meat is grass fed... also, the exercise portion of the info graphic recommends "walking and cardio"- perfectly Paleo types of strength training exercises are far superior on this front!

Civilized Cavemen and Women- Welcome!

What I really like about this guy, George, aged 27, is that he is a normal guy, who decided to totally revamp his life and health, Paleo-style!  And he did!

He went from 235 pounds to 170 pounds, reclaimed his health and vitality, and, incidentally, learned how to cook and blog!  This last is most important for all of us... aside from him also learning how to take cool photos of his creations and share them!

I use this oil in cooking, (it's great for frying eggs in!), and often add a Tablespoon or so to my daily Paleo Smoothie, along with the coconut milk and many other ingredients I include in my daily concoction...

How else do I use it?  

This may seem a little strange, but each day, before my morning shower, I spoon out a teaspoon or so from the bottle I keep in the bathroom, and put it in my mouth!  I swish it around as I shower, performing what is known as oil pulling, since I'm kind of "pulling" it around in my mouth!  Anyway, I think that aside from a Paleo template sort of diet that includes real, God-made foods and avoids processed, man-made modern foods like wheat and sugar, this is one great thing to add to your daily "routine".

Then, after showering, I spoon out some more coconut oil, and rub it over my body- it is the very best moisturizer there is!  (It's also the best hair conditioner)!  Then, I rub it on my face, and, using my trusty 1960 Gillette razor, I get the smoothest shave I have ever gotten before switching to coconut oil!  Really!  Try this too!

An important thing to realize is that your skin is like another mouth- whatever you put on your skin is absorbed into your body- so only put high-grade things like coconut oil on your body- avoid the petroleum based lotions and potions nowadays sold as moisturizers and conditioners. Yuck!

Paleo diet and the importance of SLEEP!


Here is a brief info-graphic I found at Paleoliving.com; the accompanying article is quite long, and will tell you in detail just why sleep is so important, and how we have so disrupted our necessary and primeval patterns of sleep and rejuvenation.

But, the diagram above really puts it all together succinctly!

What you really need to know and to incorporate into your life is that sleep is not something that's optional- chronic skimping on sleep, meaning less than 7 1/2 -8 hours per night, minimum, will quite literally KILL you!

The rejuvenating effects of good, restful sleep are completely necessary for mental and physical health.  Lack of sleep is extremely stressful- your body cannot take it- we were made to require sleep.  Just as we require good, high quality Paleo foods, and brief yet intense exertion, we require good, high quality sleep!  It is really that important to our health.

If you are already having trouble getting a good night's sleep, here are some things that might help:

Black out your bedroom!  If there are bright lights outside, get heavy curtains that really block that light.  Don't watch TV or use a computer in your bedroom.  Try to make it the "sleep cave".

Don't stay up late!  This is crucial- we are meant to go to bed with the onset of darkness, and awaken with the dawn.  Try to replicate this cycle as much as possible!

Don't eat late in the evening!  Digestion is a big chore/stresser on your body, and will make it harder for you to sleep.

Above all, don't be a "Hero"!  Don't be someone who prides himself on "only needing 4 hours of sleep a night!", implying that you are so tough you don't waste time on something as nonproductive as sleep!  This is nonsense, and you are only fooling yourself- just as you could "get by" eating the most non-nutritious diet; i.e. fast food and soda for awhile, we all know that eventually this will literally destroy you!  Same result with cheating on SLEEP!

I think I'll go take a nap...

High blood pressure: HI-Biscus TEA!


We’ve long known that almost all benefit from treating severe hypertension comes with lowering BP [blood pressure] just a little. On the other hand, efforts to lower BP to ‘normal,’ typically requiring multiple drugs, are not only usually unsuccessful but produce more harm than good, since adverse effects of intensive treatment outweigh the minimal marginal benefit of a little more BP ‘control.’ Drug treatment of mild hypertension….may be of great value to drug makers, but it was almost predictable that it would provide little or no benefit for patients.

Hey- do we have a problem here?  It appears that standard approaches to high blood pressure are misguided.

Suprise, suprise, suprise!!


The bottom line here is this:

MILD hypertension is best treated by natural means.  

As my friend Chris Kresser says:


"Treating mild high blood pressure with drugs is ineffective. Try potassium-rich foods, hibiscus tea, acupuncture and exercise instead."

How simple is that??

It doesn't generate a lot of revenue for the medical establishment, or the pharmaceutical companies...  

but it sure as HECK does work!

I would suggest, in light of the double blind research studies about Hibiscus Tea, that you ADD IT to you daily Paleo Smoothie if you have any high blood pressure issues!

What could be easier?

You substitute green or white tea (both excellent choices in and of themselves, by the way!), with Hibiscus Tea- available almost anywhere, readily!  (And delicious, as well!)

Of course, if you are already drinking the Paleo Smoothie!, you are already becoming super healthy just on the merits of this superdrink/food!

But, if you have a particular issue with high blood pressure-

It would behoove you to drink 

Hibiscus tea- either just replace the green/white tea in your smoothie, or add it into your beverage rotation!

It sure beats taking a DRUG!

Easy "Bulletproof" Paleo Coffee- On the Cheap!

I know, it's not the best picture, but it is still worth 1,000 words!  Every morning, I make a cup of this wonderful coffee, inspired by the impressive of Dave Asprey of the Bulletproof Executive.  I have a little different "take" on the way I do this, but Dave inspired me to start making my coffee "bulletproof", so hats off to him...

The Bulletproof version starts with coffee (Dave sells his own no toxin coffee, at a price- Bulletproof Coffee natch)!  Then, he adds pastured butter, coconut or MCT oil, and blends it with a hand-held blender... I've tried it, and it's pretty good!

The butter is a nice, healthy touch, but I prefer my butter in my Paleo Smoothie, which I'm already blending up in my Vitamix- I add the coconut oil, (or MCT oil if you have some handy), and top with real whipped cream, cinnamon and cloves!  It is really, really good, and loaded with healthy fats and beneficial spices as well.


My secret "weapon" is the Aeropress!

The Aeropress is a deceptively simple little item that, easily and quickly, (and with instant cleanup), takes any sort of coffee and make a wonderful tasting cup!  Most "micro-toxins" in coffee, I believe, are exacerbated by "steeping" the coffee in your standard drip coffee maker... this makes the coffee bitter, and concentrates the toxins in the cup as it ever-so-slowly drips out.

With the Aeropress, (which sells for a princely $26.00 or so!), hot water is added, the plunger is pressed down, and voila- the best coffee you've ever tasted!  REALLY!  Here's how it works:

Honestly, it really is that simple!

So, save the wonderful Kerrygold or other grass fed butter for the Smoothie- it really adds creaminess there, in addition to the coconut milk and coconut oil...

But do add the coconut oil, whipped cream, cinnamon and cloves to your coffee!

Paleo Coffee and a Paleo Smoothie!  Does life get any better?

Paleo Smoothie SUPER INGREDIENTS!

Butter gets a very bad rap!  "High saturated fat- artery clogging and fattening!"

B.S.- Butter satisfies! Butter is loaded with nutrients you need and want, things like Vitamins A, D, and K...  Butter, particularly grass fed, or pastured butter such as the Kerrygold shown above, will up your satiety level, so you do not feel hungry at all- that's because you have satisfied your body's nutritional needs so well by eating it!  Here is some really cool info about butter from Dave Asprey, his Bulletproof Butter info-graphic!

Pretty much sums it up- that's why I include pastured butter in the Paleo Smoothie! Use a healthy Tablespoon or so- don't skimp on this nutrient powerhouse.   Nothing against Dave's "Bulletproof Coffee"- I think it is just great; I'd just rather have the butter in the resultingly creamy smoothie, and add coconut oil and whipped cream to my coffee, thanks... same end result!

Beets- I personally love beets!  But, to get them in my diet, since I am the only one in the PaleoJay Cave that appreciates them- aye, there's the rub!

The thing about beets is that they are so good for you, particularly good for your cardiovascular health.  They can lower high blood pressure as well, and are particularly high in vitamin C, as well as other nutrients- and so, I have begun adding dried beet powder to the Paleo Smoothie!

Beet it- Beet it! oh well, enough of that....

KEFIR- 





Here is some of my home made Kefir!  I strongly recommend you take up this new "hobby" of kefir making- not only is kefir simple to make, it has become a mainstay of the Paleo Smoothie- I use about a cup per day!  That is a cup of very potent probiotics, each and every day- needless to say, my gut is now very happy indeed!

"But Jay, but Jay!" I hear you plaintively cry.

"I don't know HOW to make kefir!!"  Sob.

It's really, really simple- first, you need some kefir grains.

Never fear- just go here- cultures for health.

Buy the milk culture grains- they will last you for the rest of your life, and you can give some away every week for the rest of your life as well!  Be a hero- order some Kefir grains!

You can buy the grains elsewhere as well, I bought mine off of Ebay, and they are great!  But whatever, get some grains!

Then, put them in a mason jar (that works the best, but almost any glass jar with a lid will work fine), add raw milk if you can, but it you can't (Thanks FDA!), use goat's milk, or coconut milk!  I have been using a mix of about 1/2 coconut milk, and 1/2 goat's milk, and I just love it!  These grains will culture just about any high fat type of product...All are good to use!

I put the (2 at a time) mason jars on top of my fridge with the jars loosely screwed on, overnight.  Usually, that is all the time you need- it's done!  The first time you do it you might want to wait a couple of days, and then just put the jars in the fridge- ready to pour into your Paleo Smoothie each morning!  Simple!  

When you get to the bottom of the jar, and only have about 1/4 cup left, add more milk and repeat the process.  You don't need to wash anything out, or "wash the grains" as some say, or anything at all- just add more milk, and age overnight!  

Your grains will thank you, your GUT will thank you, and your overall bodily health and vitality will thank you, since you are doing a great thing for the wonderful microbes in your body that actually digest and process the foods you eat for you.


GINGER, and Turmeric- the two most potent cancer fighters you can find!

Both of these "spices" or herbs are readily available, and are potent anti-inflammatory agents right off the bat!  Ginger appears to be particularly effective in fighting cancer as well, (as does Turmeric as well!), and anything that combats inflammation will be a potent ally to you in your search for health.  Powdered varieties are fine- just add a teaspoon or so each day to your smoothie, for maximum effect!


Just so you know, if all of the above seems overwhelming- YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO IT ALL!

Updated Paleo Smoothie Recipe- HIGH nutrient density!

Packed and ready to blend on the road!
I promised I would reveal my ultra-secret Paleo Smoothie recipe today, Labor Day 2012!!

And so, you have here revealed to you the Rosetta Stone of easy Paleo-style nutrition- 


JUST ADD A VITAMIX!

Blend well...






Coconut Milk- 1 can
Coconut oil and/or red Palm oil- 2 Tablespoons
Carlson’s or Nordic Naturals Cod liver oil- 1 Tablespoon
Powdered kelp- 1 teaspoon
Spirulina- 1 tsp
Vitamin D3 liquid- a few drops
J.Crowe's Lugol solution of iodine- a few drops
Unsweetened kefir- 1/4 cup
Organic, unsweetened lemon juice- 1 teaspoon
Apple cider vinegar- 1 teaspoon
1-2 cups of green tea
cinnamon- 1 tsp- also great on coffee and whipped cream! (Fresh ground is best-
I use a coffee grinder)
Frozen spinach or kale or other leafy green- approximately 1 cup
Frozen mixed “California Mix” vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots), ~1 cup
Frozen mixed berries- blueberries, raspberries, strawberries- 1 cup
1/2 banana (I freeze mine so they don’t over-ripen)-optional
1 peeled orange
2 raw, organic free range eggs (optional) or more!  I often use 4 eggs; the yolks are the best part, nutritionally speaking!  Who needs fake protein powders?  
Greek yogurt also a good protein source
Also, 1 Tablespoon Kerrygold pastured butter
1 can coconut milk OR coconut milk powder


Since publishing my ebook, I have begun adding the dried, powdered varieties of:
turmeric 1 tsp
ginger 1 tsp
kelp 1 tsp
spirulina 1 tsp
red beet powder 1 tsp
These are strong anti-inflammatory agents, among many other benefits.
And NOW:
4 Tablespoons Bob's Potato Starch!  This is key for feeding your gut microbes!!


Another tip: Bulk Foods if a great place to order your dried coconut milk powder from!  

They are a food wholesaler; so you get top notch stuff at rock bottom prices- they ship fast, and are a great source for all kinds of very healthy, and also very unhealthy foods- it's your choice!

Whenever I order some dried coconut powder, I also order some nuts, dark Lindt chocolate bars, spices and other healthy things like kelp and spirulina.  I have no affiliation with Bulk Foods whatever, but they are a great resource in your Paleo lifestyle! 
 (Just don't order the gummy bears in bulk...)


Quite frankly- if you start making a daily smoothie similar to the above daily, you will be doing more to improve and salvage your health than anything else I can think of!  We are all suffering from years of substandard nutrition, since we are all suffering from many years of misinformation and propagandizing about long, slow exercise and low-fat nutritional lies.  We have to be pro-active in rebuilding our sadly lacking health through adding in all the nutrient density we can!

This Smoothie will do that- restore your health- give you glowing skin, healthy, vital teeth and hair, and a restored immune system from the "inside out", as the beneficial bacteria are restored in your intestinal tract that digest many foods for you.

To complete your nutritional rebirth, after starting in with the above, get going with a Weber Grill, making a cornucopia of foods weekly that will last you through the week!  

Just reheat later, and you'll easily have a week's worth of lunches and dinners after an enjoyable "grill outing" in your yard on a Sunday afternoon!

The other thing I would recommend?  

Get a crock pot!

You can throw together a great Paleolithic meal in the morning, just after you make your Paleo smoothie, and before you do your Paleo Exercises!  

Trust me, after you get into it, this early morning stuff will become the highlight of your day- especially the EXERCISE!

This stuff really is not all that hard!  It just requires... change... but this change is so worth it! 
It means health, and vitality, and mental health (our crappy modern diet is just as bad for our mental health as our physical health)!

Paleo Diet in a Nutshell!

There is so much to learn about the Paleo diet and lifestyle; what is the best Paleo exercise, what types of foods should I eat, what should I avoid...

I've immersed myself in this stuff for quite some time now, and I learn new "wrinkles" all the time!

Research is ongoing, and the movement is still in its infancy in terms of popular acceptance, despite the fact that this is the long term diet of humans for many, many thousands of years.  The real "dietary experiment" is the low-fat, highly processed, refined flour/sugar diet of the past 50 years!  This, my friends, is the fad diet of all time, albeit one that has been foisted upon us by our own government, and the medical establishment.

However, I think I can tell you how to become Paleo, and why, in a condensed version: (In order of importance)

Cut out grains!  This is the first rule, and the hardest for most.  I mean, almost all of our modern foods are made of grains.  Our foods are cooked in vegetable/grain seed oils (soy and corn oils), and almost everything has become a sandwich!  

Why cut them out?  Grains are genetically modified, and loaded with anti-nutrients.  These anti-nutrients will literally punch holes in your intestines, letting undigested food and pathogens free access to your bloodstream.  Can you say "autoimmune disease"?

Grains also turn directly into sugar- this is the second thing we need to cut way back on...

Cut way back on Sugar! What's so bad about sugar?  Back in the time of George Washington, the average American ate 3 pounds of sugar per year, now it's up around 260 pounds per person, and steadily rising! When you consume sugar, you blood insulin rises to help bring your blood sugar back down to normal.  It's actually a life-threatening condition; and emergency your body is trying to save you from!  It causes rapid aging, rapid fat storage in the body from the sugar itself, and is desplaces healthy, nutrient dense foods that would actually do good for your body.

So, in a "nutshell", Grains and Sugars cause rapid aging, nutrient depletion, obesity, and along with it most of the diseases of modern times. 


Eat High Fat Dairy only!  Sounds crazy, right?  Trust me- pastured, grass fed butter is loaded with fat soluble vitamins and compounds that we desperately need; Vitamin K and A, among many others. By the way, margarine/Crisco and their ilk are GRAINS! (See above- don't touch them!) 
 If you can get the raw, unpasteurized version of dairy- go for it!  As in all things, the less tampering with God's products, the better.  Fermented dairy, as in full fat yogurt (Greek yogurt), Kefir, and cheese is better that the liquid kind- it's already partly digested for you by the fermenting bacteria!

Eat LOTS of GOOD FATS!  Yes, I am deprogramming you here from the cult of low-fat, high grain consumption you've been fed your whole life!  Fat does not make you fat!  Repeat to yourself over and over...  Grains and sugar make you fat!  Repeat....

Coconut oil is a standout in this category!  A medium chain triglyceride that will fill you up, satisfy your appetite, lubricate and make your skin more youthful, turn your body back to it's natural alkaline state and away from the modern acidity that comes with grain and sugar consumption- coconut oil does all that and more!  Put it in your Paleo Smoothie!  Dissolve it in your morning coffee!  If there is a miracle food, this is it!

Get out in the Sun!  Yup- more deprogramming! Far from causing skin cancer, it turns out that Vitamin D deficiency is the main cause... we get Vitamin D from the sun!  Again, when we get "in the way " of God, and say that the sun itself, the source of all life on earth is BAD and we try to escape from it by slathering chemicals on our skin to ward off it's benefits...
Well, we get what we deserve!  And don't hesitate to put some Vitamin D drops in your daily Smoothie- I do!

Move around, slowly and leisurely a LOT every day!  I know, this also sounds "counterintuitive"- aren't we all supposed to run/jog, go on exercise machines for an hour a day, life weights to "failure"??!  In a single Paleo word: NO.  Paleo folks, hunter gatherers all, would move around a LOT, but they would be very concerned with conserving their energy for when they really needed it, i.e. chasing down and spearing an animal at the end of a long, slow, stalking type of hunt.  This is how we are wired- think a long 18 holes of golf- just don't use the stupid cart! 


And then, in addition, include a couple of sessions a week (at least) of something hard but brief.  Intense, but not exhausting- body weight exercise, chins, pushups, virtual resistance exercise (the best of all, in my opinion!), some stretching...

Make sure you eat lots of REAL FOODS: Grass fed beef (preferably), free range eggs, seafood, nuts (except peanuts- they're a legume), lots of veggies; some fruits!  The easiest, simplest, and most effective way to achieve this last is with a Paleo Smoothie... This takes care of just about ALL of your nutritional needs, simply, easily, and very, very effectively!  I am continually refining my daily "tonic", and plan to post the updated recipe for the Paleo Smoothie tomorrow!  Yes yes yes- Stay tuned!
